LIBERTY: the Senate phone system crashed yesterday

—————————————————————–
Subject: Victory!

The immigration bill is dead. It fell short by 14 votes. Better yet, the whole issue has become so controversial, in so many different ways, that no further action on immigration is expected any time soon.

Fox News has reported that the Senate phone system crashed yesterday, from so many calls coming in.

We call this overwhelming, inescapable, resistance numbing pressure!

But the media, as usual, is getting the story wrong. The professional reporting class seems unable to contain more than one idea or fact in their heads at any given time, so they’re all reporting that the bill’s defeat was due to its supposed amnesty provisions.

It is to laugh.

The truth is that nearly everyone, on all sides of the issue, opposed this bill, for every reason imaginable.

The truth is that hundreds of groups like DownsizeDC.org were organizing opposition to this legislation for many different reasons. And one of the biggest objections was the REAL ID provisions.

Congratulations to you for the role you played in killing this horrible bill. Now, we have a prediction to make . . .

THIS IS THE FUTURE.

Increasingly, this is how the United States is going to be governed. Congress will propose, but the people will dispose, by exerting overwhelming, inescapable, resistance numbing pressure.

The Internet has made this possible, just as printing made the Reformation and the Enlightenment possible, and TV enabled the civil rights movement.

This Big Change will mostly mean that Congress will do less, because there will usually be vast interlocking groups of opposition ready to fight, often for conflicting reasons, but usually with the same result — to say and impose a giant NO on Congressional schemes.

The pressure of the people will become the ultimate check and balance on state expansionism.

This is the future.

And we have another prediction to make . . .

The era of partisan politics and over-sized political personalities is coming to an end. Parties and personalities will matter less and less, while public opinion on individual issues and bills will matter more and more.

Many people will continue to have partisan loyalties, and many more will root for one candidate or another, for the same reason people love sports. But this contest of labels and names will matter less and less. It will increasingly become a “sound and fury signifying nothing.”

Groups like DownsizeDC,org are the future. Our strategy is the main chance.

Do you want to win? Then this is the way to do it. And frankly, we see zero evidence that there is any other way to do it.

But there’s something else involved here. If you look deeply at the public opinion polls on various issues you will see that most people want smaller government on most issues most of the time. We call this the Great Downsize DC Consensus. But . . .

You wouldn’t know about this Consensus from watching the news, because the journalistic obsession with the sports reporting of partisan politics ignores this point.

Likewise, the rigged partisan division into two Big Government parties, and two Big Government philosophical groupings, leaves the small government consensus disenfranchised, un-represented, and completely invisible.

Partisan politics isn’t the solution. Partisan politics is the problem!

DownsizeDC.org isn’t a political party. It’s a way to recruit and organize the Downsize DC Consensus free from the barriers of primitive partisan tribalism. It can also be, as our recruiting and organizing gains critical mass, a way to make the smaller government consensus VISIBLE for the first time.

We don’t think it is a matter of “if this will happen,” we think it is a matter of “when?”

After all, DownsizeDC.org is the future.

Yet part of the answer to the “when” question is up to you.

June has been one of our best months so far. We’ve recruited more than 800 new Downsizers, and sent more than 40,000 messages to Congress, plus countless phone calls. Now all we have to do is pay for it. Please help us make budget for June. We are very close.

A generous anonymous donor has pledged $1,500 for this purpose. But in order to get that $1,500 we must raise another $1,500 from other donors. We are oh so close. If you can contribute today your contribution will be WORTH TWICE AS MUCH. Plus . . .

We’ll mail a “9/11: Press for Truth” DVD to your home. Here’s how . . .

If you’re an existing monthly credit card pledger in good standing as of June 15, 2007, all you have to do is increase your monthly pledge by at least $1, and we’ll send one to you.

If you’re NOT an EXISTING monthly credit card pledger then you can start a monthly credit card pledge of at least $6, or make a one-time credit card donation of $35 or more, and we’ll send you the DVD. (Sorry, for technical reasons we cannot make this offer for PayPal pledges or donations).

Please help us make budget. You can make your contribution here.

Thank you for being a DC Downsizer.

>Nice job on the blog, by the way!
>And thanks for capturing the screenshot for us…

Vincent,

Thanks for the kind words. But, my blog is more of a whine. :-) Sort of like “Do Not Go Gently Into … ” as performed by Rodney Dangerfield. :-) I’m “raging”.

On a technical note about the screen capture, windoze users are often frustrated by capturing screen shots. As was I, until I found a free utility that makes it trivial. Gadwin Systems Print Screen 4.0 at http://www.gadwin.com/download/ is my “silver bullet”. (It’s free, so I’m not getting out of this message other than the satisfaction of helping my fellow human. And the acclaim at being a big fat old but TRICKY turkey.) So I use the PrintScreen button to trigger the GSPS software, edit the resultant JPEG with MSPAINT (i.e., cut the appropriate part, drop the old file, get a new file open, paste the good stuff in, and save it). From there getting the JPEG onto the BLOG is trivial. It’s then accessible to the millions of MLPF readers. If anyone needs further help, feel free to contact me on or off list and I’ll try to create a better explanation. Usually just knowing that there is a solution is enough for people to try to find that solution, their own solution, or a better solution. That is, if you think something is impossible, it is (AKA learned helplessness?).

I’m sure there are faster, better, easier, but I doubt cheaper solutions.

With being around you (i.e., VW creates the MLPF and genre), there’s no doubt that this is a very minor contribution to the whizdum wars. But we all do what we can to spread light.

Again thanks for the kind words,

QUESTION

Asked by “btenderlisa2”

Where is the best place to advertise on the internet for free?

We are a small business with a very low advertising budget. We want to get our name out there but are unsure what’s the best way to advertise with little or no cost upfront.

ANSWER

Dear “btenderlisa2”:

With a near zero budget, you have to be tricky. You didn’t say what you business does. That might make it a little hard to answer. If you’re selling pencils, then you’ll need a different strategy than if you are remarketing one of the various enlargement crèmes my dearest friends from Nigeria are always telling me about.

Let assume that that your business offers a legal product or service that just needs a little “voice” in the crowded marketplace. How do you get that “voice” at a price you can afford?

I’m going to refer back to one of my Yahoo Best Answers that I gave to the “party purse” lady who had a similar question.

https://reinkefaceslife.com/?s=%22party+purse%22

http://tinyurl.com/36f486

You can create a blog as your website and talk about your business.

In a nutshell, you find an available domain that aligns to your business, go to the wordpressdotcom free blog site, get a free blog, for 15$US you upgrade to your own domain, and you start to write about your business. I’d suggest that you write both about your products and or services, as well as the “behind the scenes” tales about your business. What problems you face, how you solve them, the successes, AND the failures. You have to be “authentic” to develop an audience. Once you have an audience, you get a conversation going. Then come sales and buzz.

All for some sweat and 15$US.

Hope this helps. I’m interested how it works out for you. Drop me a note sometime. My blog may have helpful “stuff”.

MONEY: Zimbabwe Today; USA tomorrow

Saturday, June 30, 2007

http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/?storyID=7501

A non-currency country
Zimbabwe Today
It’s a daily struggle trying to survive in
a society where money is worthless

***Begin Quote***

I popped out for a Z$25,000 loaf of bread last Friday. It had gone up to Z$30,000 dollars. I ran home for the extra, ran back to the shop – and the price of my loaf had risen to Z$44,000.

That’s life in Zimbabwe today – or at least it was, until this week when our government took bold and decisive action to reduce the inflatory spiral, and predictably everything got even worse straight away.

***End Quote***

I love when the Universe provides us a “labratory demonstration” when the meme we call gooferment falls afoul of economic law. Not content with shaving a few coins, the gooferment in Zimbabwe can’t print paper money fast enough. (Sounds a little like “helicopter ben” at his Senate confirmation hearings!)

When humans are infected with a mental virus, or meme, we can become irrational. Look at the “pet rock” which was pretty harmless. Look at the tulip craze in Holland’s history, the German hyper-inflation, our Great Depression, or any of the “monetary disasters” of the last century. They are all characterized by a failure in our own thinking.

Gold coins anyone?

If you were traveling to Zimbabwe, then I bet they’d hold their value!

The question is how does the human population of Zimbabwe throw off their “mental virus”? If you are in that society, how do you survive? How does it unwind?

Sadly, I think it involves a lot of pain and suffering and even deaths.

My secret is staying on whine! Having no “brand”, I just try to not be too annoying.

On a more serious note, has anyone done any “studying” about the concept of “freshness”? In my monologging career (as opposed to blogging), I noticed that most of my posting is done at night after dinner. I can usually find 5 to 10 things worth commenting on. imho

OK, whine about!

Like the state employee speeding to work, bullying the serfs just trying to go to work, out of the way by tailgating. Or, why yet another POS (piece of software) has let me down.

In looking at the time stamps, it struck me. Perhaps my blog would be “popular” (i.e., read by other than my relatives who I quiz any time I see them — only the offline Luddites are safe.), if I had content posted on a regular basis over the time span. If I have 6 posts, then, instead of dumping them all in between six and eleven pm, I could use the time stamp to have “fresh” content every four hours.

For the RSS types and the email readers, it wouldn’t make any diff.

But the real-time readers, thirsty for new content at 4AM, could find something. Find me. And, be so enamored of my great wit and wizzdumb, become life long fans. (No huh?) I’d get possibly a slug on the the free, and unequaled, wordpressdotcom dashboard overnight? That might get an eye ball. Bleary but it could convert to a reader.

If the blog – o – sphere is an open air market of ideas, does the din die down (I like that alliteration) at certain time? Can a pipsqueak be heard during that time? In the end, we all dead. But in the short run, to attract an audience, does timing matter? I think I have a firm grasp on the eyeballs of six relatives and three friends. Should I just be content with that? Or does fame and fortune await, if I could just be “discovered”? Or, am I doomed to “obscurity” as a blogger? Maybe I should focus on my spelling?

Timing of posting may be of greater import and impact to the “brand”, and other more serious, blogs.

Sigh, just a thought,

EMAIL TO COMMENTER THAT SEEMS TO BE WRONG:

Dear Ms. X:

Please pardon the intrusion.

While I appreciate, “publish”, and cherish all comments on my blog, I do try to ensure that they are not spam, spim, sphishing, or whatever the latest “sp” word is. Your comment was flagged as possible spam. No idea why?

I went to your blog, but since I’m from the USA, (that means I only speak one language) (Well courtesy of the USAF in the Seventies I do “speak” Thai, but I don’t count that since most Thais speak better English than I do), so I could ascertain anything. Other than a cute pix. But, on the net, no one knows you’re a dog.

Any way, your comment references “Leo”; that’s not me. So I wanted to confirm that you intended the comment for me. Once I release it, it’s hard to get it back. There’s no “retract” button on the internet. And, if this email bounces, then I can be even more circumspect.

With respect to your comment, I’m not sure that from a job seekers perspective that you would want an “interactive resume”. IMHO the resume’s only purpose is to provoke a conversation. A resume that give up too much info, too little, or the “wrong” info (i.e., pointing to the wrong image you wish to display) is “bad”. It would seem a business diary could also be a bad thing.

I’m still confused by the difference between a blog and website. I know at they are (I have lots of each) and how they are different. It’s just in the philosophy of their relation. Is a blog nothing more than an easily updated website? Should we view a blog as a freshening agent to drive traffic to the “store”?

Any way thanks for the comment, if you meant to leave it. And, either way, please let me know if it should be “published”?

thanks,
fjohn

MONEY: How transition to a metal backed currency

Friday, June 29, 2007

FROM AN EMAIL TO ECONOMIST WRITER

Dear X:

As an injineer, I’m not a social scientist. Some say I am not even social. As a “gold bug”, I am adding to supply of that relic. My question is one of philosophy, history, and practicality.

I first became aware of inflation (i.e., monetary fiat inflation as opposed to all the other distractions that are called inflation) when in Manhattan College in some course or another, vonMises was an assigned collateral reading. I had a prof, who I can’t remember, was always on Crusoe’s Island. I got a D, so I didn’t take much away from the course. My next brush with education about it was a visit to the Smithsonian where I saw the incredible shrinking French franc. The original French Franc of Louis I was a gold coin that looked more like a small hockey puck than a coin. The last French Franc of the monarchy Louis XVI was a tissue paper thin button. That is what governments do. They debase the currency. They redefine money to give themselves more and the people less. Paper money is even easier to inflate. No coins to shave! I then experienced the Carter inflation of the 70’s with 18% interest rates. And the WIN (Whip Inflation Now) absurd buttons. Lately I’ve read about the Liberty Dollar, silverization of the Mexican peso, and the golden dinar. I’m also remotely aware of Say’s Law which I will paraphrase as “if you had some gold and some paper, which would you spend first?”. I think is a fair translation.

So with that context, how do the people of say New Hampshire, with all those willing Free State Project members, transition from Federal Reserve Banknotes (that I sarcastically called FRBies) to a metal backed currency (i.e., the Liberty Dollar, gold or silver bullion coins, something else)?

I’ve posed this question to Walter Williams, Lew Rockwell, and anyone else who I thought might have an answer. Never had a good answer. Care to take a stab at it?

Does it take a TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It) scenario to get rid of the Federal Reserve? With all the fighting and bloodshed to get to peace and economic honesty? Or is there a peaceful path to end “counterfeiting”? With all the “stuff” that the Federal Gooferment could sell off, it would seem possible to make good on all the promises. Sell off land in Nevada and Alaska to pay for Social Security? I can’t see how anything good will come out of our current direction. Nothing likely except more inflation.

Care to share your thoughts about this topic?

Save the house?

QUESTION

Asked by “miss_spunderella”

Can someone PLEASE help us come up with ways to earn $15,000 so our house doesn’t get auctioned off?

We fell behind in our payments and our house is going up for forclosure in August. We are a family of six now and are happy in our home. with the struggles of school, work and availability for a babysitter, things have been more than we could manage. plus no male to help with the burden. We can work with someone on a private auto loan, or any kind of possible opportunities you can suggest. We are now employed and have a live in babysitter to help, so the loan will be re-paid promptly. PLEASE help with ideas, and possibilities so we are able to keep our home.

ANSWER

Dear “miss_spunderella”:

Well, losing one’s home is no joke. Coming to Yahoo Answers means you’ll have to take ALL advice, especially mine, with a large grain of NaCl.

As, I understand the gist, you’re behind in your mortgage payments and are at risk of foreclosure. Did you get a foreclosure notice from the lender? You need an attorney, a cpa, and a counselor to help you get thru this.

Assuming, a big assumption, that you hit a temporary bump in the road, and can NOW afford your payments. Your lawyer can help you get straight with the lender. No lender WANTS to foreclose. You may have legal rights to slow the process down and make it attractive to the lender to “cooperate”. Your accountant can help you understand what goes in, what goes out, and get you organized to avoid this in the future. A counselor can help you with the emotional roller coaster thru the processes. Your local social service agency may be able to help you with a grant or loan to keep you from getting throw out on the street and being homeless.

Assuming, again big assumption, that you just need some interim financing, say to overcome some unemployment, I’d aim you at your local bank, a credit union (the website to find a local one is below), and the PROSPER website (i.e., they mediate people to people loans; website below).

Hope this helps. I’m interested how it works out for you. Drop me a note sometime. My blog may have helpful “stuff”.

SUBMITTED TO RISKS

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0483726/

Man of the Year
with Robin Williams
as President Elect Tom Dobbs

*** begin quote ***

Tom Dobbs, comedic host of a political talk show – a la Bill Maher and Jon Stewart – runs for President of the US as an independent candidate who, after an issues-oriented campaign and an explosive performance in the final debate, gets just enough votes to win. Trouble is he owes his victory to a computer glitch in the national touch-screen voting system marketed by Delacroy, a private company with a rising stock price. To protect their fortune, Delacroy executives want to keep the glitch a secret, but one programmer, Eleanor Green, wants Dobbs to know the truth. Can she get to him? Written by jhailey.

*** end quote ***

Correct me if I am wrong, but did this movie just put a stake thru the heart of the vampire known as “electronic voting”?

Systems provided by Delacroy … err I mean Diebold … could manipulate the results of an election. Based on the movie, I’ve just emailed Ron Paul to change his name to Ron Paaul. (SPOILER: In the movie, the buggy computer program elects the candidate with the “best” double letter.) So if anyone wants to debate about paperless electronic internet voting and tell you how good it will be yada yada yada, just rent them this movie. That should finish up the discussion!

They say many a true word is said in jest.

Some times concepts can get thru via humor. My non-techie spouse said after watching this that it would now never be approved here. Hope she’s right.

This film IMHO says it all about that topic. And, says it in way that comes across to the average person.

fjohn

p.s.: The movie did have one other great line. Tom Dobbs says “Politicians are a lot like diapers. They should be changed frequently, and for the same reasons.” If you gather I’m no fan of politicians, you’re correct. They are like diapers!

INTERESTING: The Paris Hilton Ad

Re: The Paris Hilton Ad

Dear Mister Benson,

I know in your ads you go for “yucks”, and I particularly like when you skewer the politicians. Maybe you could offer the Guv a set of free seat belts?

Now about the “Paris Hilton” ad where you asked for appropriate punishments for Ms. Hilton — like cleaning your stable; again I know you are going for yucks, but in this case, I think we should go for a punishment that benefits everyone. So here goes.

Paris was supposedly jailed for basically drunk driving parole violation. I think “drunk driving” is one of the big “sins” for a driver.

(I thought it should have been Number #1 on the Pope’s list. When I go out and hoist even one, I won’t drive for fear of harming my fellow human. Good thing my old lady is a teetotaler!)

Notice I said drunk; not drinking. I think that if you have an accident and have been drinking, then you were drunk. Real simple. No roadside stops. No random checks. Cop sees you swerving or asleep at the traffic light, you go to jail for endangering your fellow drivers and their passengers. You kill someone, we throw away the key.

Anyway Paris is a celebrity. Politicians love celebrities. The media loves celebrities. AND I think the billboards that put a face on drunk driving fatalities are moving. So let’s use the “Paris Hilton” spotlight to some good.

So here’s my suggestion for Paris’ punishment. It’s not cleaning a stable but it might have a better result.

For EVERY county in California, let’s have Paris and the local California “legislators” visit the family home of a drunk driving fatality. Paris has to stand outside and ask for a picture of the victim. If the family wishes to tell the story, she has to listen. Then she has to turn to the camera and show that picture. Every day for THIRTY days.

Maybe, she’ll take away a lesson. Maybe, the “legislators” will take away a lesson. Maybe, the media will report the lesson. Maybe, we can all learn the lesson.

Maybe, the People will put a face on a human tragedy. And everyone will get serious about “drunk driving”.

How’s that for punishment? Now you know why I’ll never be a judge. Thanks for listening.

So much for US justice: juries get the verdict wrong in one out of six criminal cases and judges don’t do much better, a new study has found.

And when they make those mistakes, both judges and juries are far more likely to send an innocent person to jail than to let a guilty person go free, according to an upcoming study out of Northwestern University.

Finding a solution will be much harder to do than quantifying the problem, Heinz warned.

Sigh, gooferments can’t repeal the Law of Supply and Demand.

Price floors are a hidden tax. Price subsidies are a hidden tax.

Markets are peaceful “elections” where competing needs for the same good are award to the one whose “need” is the greatest. In a complex calculus, the market determines who gets what. It’s truly amazing. Rarely is everyone happy or satisfied, but the market peacefully allows us all to cooperate and get along.

When the heavy hand of gooferment comes along, it mucks stuff up. Causes friction and violence. It reinforces the zero-sum scarcity mentality.

The market on the other hand ensure that there is “plenty for everybody”. Higher prices have several simultaneous effects.

  • Everyone conserves. Three buck a gallon gas is used much more wisely that one buck a gallon.
  • High prices award products to those who “need” them the most (i.e., willing to pay more). Those whose need is less (i.e., won’t pay the high price) wait until the price comes down.
  • Producers ship more of a product to where the return on investment is higher. Plywood in NOLA after Katrina was earning more than in your local home depot.
  • Supply reduced locally encourages conservation and / or delayed gratification.

In short the market is our benefactor. Actually all of those fellow human beings represented in the market are working to satisfy our needs. Not out of self-sacrifice. But, out of a desire to get our “certificate of appreciation” (i.e., money). They can then use those to satisfy their own needs. In a giant calculus designed to make us all live happily together as one big happy family. (Move your elbow!) OK, maybe not happy, but not killing each other either.

Gooferment bad. (Any gooferment!) Markets peaceful and good.

LIBERTY: Skoolz learn them student to be victims

Reverse the Public School Brainwashing and Keep Your Kids Safe
by Captain Dave

***Begin Quote***

This politically correct emphasis on non-violence is really a drive to non-confrontation that teaches kids to be victims at an early age. Violence not only still exists in our schools, it is worse than ever because the system does not allow kids to counter force with force. This means that kids cannot fight back when they are harassed on the school bus, spit on in the lunch room, assaulted in the hallway, or beaten in the locker room. Teachers routinely do not intervene in bullying or one-way assaults. This bullying behavior is allowed until the target decides to fight back, at which point school rules treat both the attacker and defender the same way. I am afraid that these days, the only place bullies and their victims really meet after school to settle their differences is on television or in the movies.

Gooferment skoolz are my pet peeve. Here’s another reason NOT to like them! The unintended consequences of them are just bad to all the poor children imprisoned in them.

City program to help small businesses

QUESTION

Asked by ” ”

What could be some consequences and alternative actions…..?

Robert is a managing partner of an Accounting firm that has 15 employees. One day, Robert learns that New York City has started a program to help small businesses. The program provides tax breaks and other benefits for Manhattan-based businesses that have fewer than 15 full-time employees. Since Accountants LLC has 15 full-time employees, it would be ineligible for the program. Robert fires Michael, the most junior accountant at the firm, which now makes the firm eligible for the program.

1.What do you see as the issues raised by the facts in the scenario? Describe as many as you see.

ANSWER

Dear ” “:

Invisible? Why? Are we doing your take home? Sorry but it may not be to good.

The problem chasing gooferment programs is that it takes your eye off the ball. Either you’re in the Accounting Biz or your are a Sam Donnelson sheep farmer. It might be possible to suck off the taxpayers a little but it’s a distraction.

I sit down and have a hard think about your ethics and what business you really want to be in.

Hope this helps. I’m interested how it works out for you. Drop me a note sometime. My blog may have helpful “stuff”.

MONEY: Save for a rainy day

Save for a rainy day. Your financial adviser and grandpa were right … you should have a healthy cushion of savings set aside in case of emergencies. This is the hardest advice for me to follow, but it is very, very wise. Set up an automatic monthly deposit to an account that is NOT tied to your regular personal or business checking account. I heard someone suggest that it be a bank or financial institution that is inconvenient to get to and has few ATMs.

***End Quote***

I learned this lesson sort of by chance.

In my first transition from AT&T to Wall Street, I got a golden handshake to leave. Thru dumb luck, the protection that the Universe extend to the totally clueless sometimes, I was able to get back “in” in eleven days. Mostly that was waiting for the gooferment SEC and the blood test about drugs. In my new job, I had access to a salary deferral plan that allowed my to defer paying taxes on the handshake. Since I hate taxes, the money was “saved”. Fast forward to my transition out of Merrill Lynch, where I decided to become a consultant. I was seeing big gobs of money being paid to consultants in those go go days. Frau’s fears were minimal, and so were mine, beneath the bravado, since I still had that year’s pay with interest “salted away”. Always nice to fall flat on one’s face when you have a nice cash cushion to “fall into”. My consulting was a wild success. But it could have just as easily been a dismal flop. When I consult with My Turkeys (i.e., the FOWGs who are out of work) who “land”, I always try to drive home the need for building up a “rainy day fund”.

Sigh. Some even listen.

LIBERTY: Social Security is an odd type of Ponzi scheme

What If Social Security Were Completely Scrapped?
By D.W. MacKenzie
Posted on 6/18/2007

***Begin Quote***

Social Security transfers income between generations. It does nothing to promote capital accumulation through saving, because it does not involve saving. It is true that some American, especially the earliest recipients of benefits, have gained a low positive rate of return on Social Security. However, this is only possible because other Americans, especially those presently under 30, can expect a negative rate of return. In other words, Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, contrary to what its defenders claim.

Yet Social Security is an odd type of Ponzi scheme. In the original Ponzi scheme, those who got in early enough made a high rate of return.

***End Quote***

Where no one wins!

It is supposed to protect the poor, yet it’s well documented that it discriminates against the poor. It transfers wealth from poor black men to rich white women.

But, worst of all, it robs wealth from all of us.

Only the gooferment, the politicians, and its workers gain.

Sigh, how stupid are we?

RANT: Just don’t buy anything with an EULA

Arbitrary Sneakwrap Takes Some Hits
Ed Foster

*** begin quote ***

In the end, the main thing these two cases really have in common is the recognition by the judges that sneakwrap licenses in general and mandatory arbitration clauses specifically give the vendor too much power over the customer. We’d all like to think the free market can keep customers from being abused, but it can’t if the only recourse abused customers have is to engage in long, expensive, and secret arbitration procedures. I don’t know if Bragg or Sheehan deserve to win their cases, but I do know that they deserve their day in court.

Time for some “rough justice” a la the The People’s Court.

I won’t buy anything with an EULA. That’s going to put a dent in their pockets.

A deceptively simple game of logic, Sudoku is puzzling players all over world. Whether you’re new to this fun and addictive game or you’re already hooked, Sudoku.com has everything you need to get started playing today! Sudoku is easy to learn but a challenge to master.

***End Quote***

Here’s an interesting challenge. What can you learn from Sudoku?

(1) You can learn how to solve them. There is some feeling that, like doing the daily crossword, it can delay old age in your brain.

(2) You can learn how different manual methods are used to solve them. Scanning, Cross-hatching, Counting, “contingencies”, Marking up, Dotting, Anti-dotting, subscripting and finally guessing.

(3) Playing on the AARP site with the cheats turned on demonstrates that dotting, anti-doting, or “erasing” can solve almost any puzzle.

Finally, you’ll learn how to waste some time learning that the computer is a better clerk than you’ll ever be.

Jigsaw

Jigsaw was founded, like many businesses, on the firm belief that there had to be a better way. Specifically, the idea for Jigsaw came in 2003 when I was VP of Sales at a public company in the Silicon Valley. Sick and tired of getting worn out lists of incorrect data from traditional data companies, I was struck by the idea that the only way to solve the problem was to somehow motivate a whole bunch of people to each provide a few pieces of the data puzzle. I figured that, due to dynamic nature of corporations and their employees, the only way to keep up with this rapid rate of change was to create an open and collaborative system. The analogies drawn were as follows:

Social Networking: A Beginner’s Guide To Facebook
Robin Good
Edited by: Luigi Canali De Rossi

***Begin Quote***

However you feel about Facebook there is no denying that it has managed to make a huge impact. This is in no small way down to opening up of the platform to external developers – in many ways an industry first.

As a consequence Facebook has managed to go from being a well-put-together online social networking tool to becoming a socially powered content aggregation hub. By allowing you to bring together the vast majority of your favorite tools and services from around the web, and aggregate them in a single easy-to-navigate destination, Facebook has achieved something totally new.

***End Quote***

Robin Good is an excellent source of direction about new media. I’m a dilatant.

FACEBOOK interests me because of a huge population of young fellow alums that I’d like reading and contributing to Jasper Jottings.

Other than that, who needs another “time hole”. No RSS. No efficiencies.
