Heat Up Your Job Searching Skills: Networking 101 and 102

POSTED IN JUNE 18TH, 2010

*** begin quote ***

He had prepared an 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper laid out in a grid. He had printed every company he was interested in, the contact person’s name, number, email address, linked in name, and issues now confronting that company (his own analysis). My new friend left me his sheet and simply asked if I knew anyone from these companies or who might know these people.

*** end quote ***

“Guess which one I helped more?”

May I humbly suggest that you should have written: “Guess which one I was able to give more help?”

(I’m sure that Number One’s failings would not annoy you enough to deliberately NOT help. Number One just didn’t set up the framework for you to maximize your effectiveness. Never mind efficiency. Number One was much further along on the “dikw (i.e., data, information, knowledge, wisdom) curve”. Number One is asking for data, (e.g., who’s hiring me); some names. Number Two is asking for and sharing wisdom (i.e., different way of presenting the knowledge of targets and helping you fit your knowledge into a shared model).

Excellent wisdom presented, imho. (That means I’ll steal this and make it my own. With appropriate credit, of course.)

RANT: Messaging on Facebook about “worst”

Mort Zuckerman: World Sees Obama as Incompetent and Amateur
The president is well-intentioned but can’t walk the walk on the world stage
By Mortimer B. Zuckerman
Posted June 18, 2010

*** begin quote ***

The reviews of Obama’s performance have been disappointing. He has seemed uncomfortable in the role of leading other nations, and often seems to suggest there is nothing special about America’s role in the world. The global community was puzzled over the pictures of Obama bowing to some of the world’s leaders and surprised by his gratuitous criticisms of and apologies for America’s foreign policy under the previous administration of George W. Bush. One Middle East authority, Fouad Ajami, pointed out that Obama seems unaware that it is bad form and even a great moral lapse to speak ill of one’s own tribe while in the lands of others.

*** end quote ***

AND I COMMENTED ON FACEBOOK:

Sad to say, but BHO44 IS this generation’s version of Jimmy Carter. But without the redeeming values of honesty and humility. Too bad; the nation invested a lot of hope in his “change”. Unfortunately he’s not up to the challenge. Something we should have anticipated from his lack of accomplishments. Never mind the lack of a birth certificate. What a joke…

WHICH DREW THIS RESPONSE:

wow

everyones got an opinion

how long has the guy even been in office anyway?

isn’t Bush Jr probably gonna remembered as the worst president of all time, what with getting the US involved in a needless war? apologies for him SHOULD BE MADE

AND I REPLIED:

BHO44 has been in long enough to have his lack of any real experience to expose that he’s just not Presidential material. (imho) He’s just a corrupt Chicago politician with a Socialist agenda. Hopefully, we can recover from his deliberate actions and his mistakes.

Well, I think the liberal media has hung the label “needless war” on Shrub. BTW imho, there’s no doubt that the elusive “weapons of mass destruction” went to Syria. They had six months notice to move them adn clean up. All the politicians and bureaucrats, here and around the world, believed Iraq had them and said so. There are some reports that the USA sold Iraq some of the less lethal ones that he used to gas the Kurdish minority. So, imho “needless” is probably not appropriate.

It is FAIR to critique him for: (1) being biased to hit Iraq because of the supposed assassination of Daddy Bush; (2) clearly being unprepared to win (i.e., you break it you own it); (3) falling into IRAN’s trap by taking out their counterweight in the region. So, there’s enough blame to go around, but not for THAT particular reason.

As far as worst, he ain’t even close. Lincoln is far and away worst. And, again imho, Wilson, FDR, and Truman are the next three in line, with little difference between them.

Hope that this comes across in the spirit I intend. I’m just a “blind man” looking for wisdom. :-)

The Robert Kennedy Assassination

*** begin quote ***

Sirhan Sirhan was in the pantry firing a gun that night at Robert Kennedy, with intent to kill. But the autopsy report, coupled with dozens of eyewitnesses to the scene, cast grave doubt on the otherwise obvious conclusion that Sirhan actually fired the shots that hit RFK. Furthermore, the evidence is strong that Sirhan was stalking Kennedy in the company of a young blond girl and another male companion.

Here’s an excellent summary of the unanswered questions. Why do you think the LA police covered up the evidence?

But then there’s one variable a driver sadly can’t do much to change and that’s geography. Here are the ten states in which it’s most expensive to insure a motor vehicle (Criteria was identical across all states):

District of Columbia – Perhaps due to its #2 spot on the list of worst traffic gridlocks, residents of our nation’s capital can expect to pay an average of $1,140 in insurance premiums each year.

New Jersey – In the Garden State, an annual premium of $1,104 is typical.

RANT: Obama wants 7$ a gallon gas?

$7-a-gallon gas?
The folly of O’s oil-spill ‘fix’
By BEN LIEBERMAN
Last Updated: 2:49 PM, June 18, 2010
Posted: 12:02 AM, June 18, 2010

*** begin quote ***

So what does global-warming legislation have to do with the oil spill?

Good question, because such measures wouldn’t do a thing to clean up the oil or fix the problems that led to the leak.

The answer can be found in Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s now-famous words, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste — and what I mean by that is it’s an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before.”

*** and ***

The logic linking cap-and-trade to the spill in the Gulf should frighten anyone who owns a car or truck. Such measures force up the price at the pump — Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs thinks it “may require gas prices greater than $7 a gallon by 2020” to meet Obama’s stated goal of reducing emissions 14 percent from the transportation sector.

*** and ***

Emanuel was wrong. The administration shouldn’t view each crisis — including the oil spill — as an opportunity to be exploited, but as a problem to be addressed. And America can’t afford $7-a-gallon gas.

*** end quote ***

I think the should pass the cap ‘n’ tax bill.

ASAP!

And, when the economy tanks, and And, folks pay a Cnote for a fill up. And, they can’t afford to go to work.

There will be the revolution that these bozos want. And, like some French aristocrats found out the hard way, they may be the ones removed from the gene pool.

At least their crazy Socialist ideas will get a proper send off.

American will collapse under 7$ per gallon gas. The economy is build on cheap energy.

Will this be the event that collapses us, like the Roman Empire, and all the empires of human civilization?

JOBSEARCH: Gather all your contacts on GMAIL

The Complete Guide to Creating a Consolidated, Master Contact List

*** begin quote ***

The most important part of the process is to pick an easy contact management solution that will incorporate information easily while still being able to export to a variety of formats (Outlook and others) and sync to your smartphone.

Google Contacts fits the bill nicely in a variety of ways. It supports CSV (comma-separated value) files from other Google accounts and Outlook. (CSV is a common export format, but the fields vary slightly between Google-exported CSVs and Outlook-exported CSVs; Google Contacts can handle either); it can also import the vCard format, which is supported by Apple Address Book.

*** end quote ***

Plaxo has size limits and its “clients” cause problems.

Cardscan is now limited to those who buy their card scanner.

Google’s Contacts does NOT do periodic verification with contacts, consolidate the results, and replicate updates out. And it has quotas!

Outlook and Apple Mail have “address book” functions that are limited.

LinkedIn locks you in.

Too many dead ends and islands of data.

The Good, the Fad and the Ugly

*** begin quote ***

Elizabeth Hasselbeck is ridiculous. Her unprofessionalism on The View today was crossing a line. I never really get upset about her comments, even when she’s babbling on about the GOP, but to yawn and say rude comments to a guest is a little much in my opinion. Okay, you don’t like Kathy Griffin, she said some stuff about you, which I think a lot of peeps agree with in one or or another, but aren’t you supposed to do a job without bias? (I love that I’m asking her a question, like she reads this blog. I mean she should, duh). In no way, shape or form is Elizabeth a journalist, but she is still supposed to act accordingly and treat all guests equally when interviewing them.

*** end quote ***

I though Elizabeth was rude. And, she does shill for the R’s. (Just as Joy shills for the D’s.) Clearly they need Whoopi, who seems like a straight shooter (i.e., during Obamacare debate, said: “I want what you got”. And her usual exclamation “What the hell!”)

E, J, or any of them in this venue are NOT “journalists”. Barbara Wawa is the closest they have to one. (And, you’ll notice she stays well back from the partisan line. Except we KNOW she’s a liberal. And, throws liberals “softballs. But she tries to be a “journalist”.)

You must realize that the hosts of the views are like Glenn Beck, Rush, and Bill O’R are commentators. Not new people. There’s a diff between opinion, comment, and news.

POLITICAL: I’d prefer USP, UL, Consumers Reports, doctors, and WalMart over the FDA

Catholic businessman battles ALS, prepares for eternity

By Spencer S. Busby

*** begin quote ***

San Diego, Calif., Jun 6, 2010 / 01:19 pm (CNA).- Three years ago, Shane FitzMaurice was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The rare neurological disorder is typically fatal within five years of diagnosis.

*** and ***

Initially, the diagnosis felt like a death sentence. “At first, I was in denial,” FitzMaurice said, “feeling all doom and gloom and ‘why me’?”

But then he decided to fight back. Last August, he traveled with his wife to Monterrey, Mexico, to undergo an experimental procedure that implanted his own body’s stem cells into his brain. While FitzMaurice was pleased that he took action by undergoing the procedure, he admits that it has resulted in only limited improvement.

Still, FitzMaurice believes such therapies should be more freely available in the United States. “People with a terminal diagnosis should be able to sign a waiver with FDA to be guinea pigs, because we do not have the time to wait.”

*** end quote ***

We know so little about our own bodies.

And it’s a terrible disease.

That being said, the man has a great point. Why should the FDA keep interfering? Are they protecting him from something worse? What could that be?

TIme to nuke the FDA!

They are just a bunch of bureaucrats captured by Big Pharma.

What’s the worst that could happen?

Thalidomide? That happened with the FDA. And they used it to slow the process and make it more expensive. It’s not like we don’t have drug disasters anyway. And, what good drugs have they prevented by making it too slow and too costly.

I’ll take faster and cheaper. USP, UL, Consumers Reports, doctors, and WalMart will do a much better job of keeping us safe.

Argh!

My Life in Key West
THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 2010

*** begin quote ***

Actions speak louder than words!

Yesterday I said I was disappointed with the President’s speech. Today I must say I am impressed with what he accomplished yesterday. I refer to the $20 billion committment plus he obtained from BP.

Perhaps Obama is a differnet type leader. He seems much like Teddy Rooseveelt. Speak softly and carry a large stick.

Credit must be given where credit is due. Good job, Mr. President!

*** end quote ***

>I said I was disappointed with the President’s speech

As well you should be. Like all Americans, we expect our Presidents to DO something. Other than point fingers.

>Today I must say I am impressed with what he accomplished yesterday.

In a twenty minute meeting? It was more likely just some posturing and a general collapse of BP in front of the Boy King.

>I refer to the $20 billion commitment plus he obtained from BP.

Commitment? I’d call it extortion. So when does the litigation start. The stockholders, the dividend recipients, the British pensioners (from whence they get 20% of their pension), and to a lesser extent the workers were extorted to the tune of 20B$. If their liability was capped at 75M$, where does the BP CEO and team get off giving away the assets of the company? And to a political slush fund? The 911 fund was a disaster that we have only partially seen the facts. More money to be “expensed” by the politically connected.

As a lawyer, would you care to opine on under what principle of law he can extract such a “commitment”? If you were counsel to the BP CEO, would you advise him to pay off like a slot machine? If you were advising the stockholders, wouldn’t you sue?

>Perhaps Obama is a different type leader.

Leader? Sorry, but I haven’t seen ANY leadership out of him. Even on his “signature” items — porkulous and socialist health, he was like a disinterested third party. Lobbyists and backroom aides wrote the bills.

> He seems much like Teddy Rooseveelt.

He’s not “in the Arena”. He’s in campaign mode; still running for the job. Or reelection. Although, he is, like TR, killing folks. He’s expanded Bush’s Predator Drone program. Killing even American citizens!

> Speak softly and carry a large stick.

No speak and no stick. He’s just another corrupt Chicago politician. BP is his biggest contributor and long time benefactor of his Chief Of Staff Rahm. His background tells you a lot about him.

>

If he was a true leader, he’d have reached out to Sarah Palin for her expertise in regulating Oil Companies. She’d have told him that they “understate the truth”. If he was a real leader, he’d have installed Biden in Texas and asked the Bushes to assist him in “solving the problem”. If he was a real leader, he’d have engaged on Day One.

Sorry, but the only thing that needs to be kicked, is him. Out!

Not that McCain is a saint either. But Sarah would have been an asset to have in place. Not that she’s Joan of Arc either. I dislike BOTH political parties.

But when the Nation is in trouble, EVERYONE needs to be used. There’s no shame in not having all the answers. There’s plenty in not asking the right questions.

He’s yet another “empty suit”.

You were more correct yesterday!

Seattle Police Guild Defends Officer’s Punch

Published June 16, 2010 | Associated Press

*** begin quote ***

Seattle Police Officers Guild President Rich O’Neil says an officer was justified in punching a young woman who shoved him in a dispute over jaywalking.

*** end quote ***

I had a conversation about this incident.

Over jaywalking? And, how old are the two girls?

FRIEND: It was the fact that the officer was surrounded by urban yutes, and the woman pushed him. They are trained how to handle themselves in situations like this….as they commented later, there have been many instances where police officers were brutually attacked when they took a passive stance. His aggressive action may have prevented something much worse. I need to get you a new pair of glasses, or contact lenses! :-)

No. (no new glasses needed)

I’ve seen the video. Couple of points:

(1) Jaywalking? It’s like the Gooferment is using its force to pick a fight with the folks.

(2) The girls were clearly out of control and were inciting trouble.

(3) The “citizens” didn’t not help “their” police diffuse the situation, calm the the agitated woman who got punched, or assist in protecting “their” officer. (imho citizens have an affirmative duty to enforce the laws made in their name).

(4) The police officer MAY have over reacted. But alone, and facing multiple opponents, and a potential mob, I’m not going to criticize him. (I ain’t walked in those moccasins.) Faced with that situation, if he truly felt threatened he’d have been justified imho in drawing his weapon. I think that he was foolish to get in close combat with “crazy people” who might have had a knife or other “blade”. When they resisted, I’d have stepped back, drawn my weapon, and directed them to step back and lie down on the ground. I’d support that.

The punch in an attempt to detain may have been an over reaction.

And, how old are these girls anyway?

But unlike the current “Nato” weapons, where a hit is not necessarily a “stopper”, nothing would be going after getting hit with this. Wonder if they make a AP cartridge for it? Be perfect for the next American Revolution!

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: BP is little people!

Bullied into a £13bn cave-in: Obama forces BP to set up huge compensation fund for U.S. oil spill victims – and British pensioners will pick up the bill

The news sent BP shares plunging to a 14-year low of £3.37, and is a major blow for Britain’s pension funds, which rely on BP’s dividend income to provide £1 in every £6 they receive each year

*** and ***

BP has cancelled the first-quarter payment that was due on June 21. Mr Svanberg said the second and third quarter dividends would be suspended – a major blow for Britain’s pension funds.

The move will also hit American investors. While 40 per cent of BP’s major shareholders are in Britain, Americans have a 39 per cent stake in the multi-national company.

BP also reportedly has twice as many American as British employees.

You have to laugh at the economic illiteracy of the liberals, the Administration, and the left-leaning media. Who did they think owned BP? Like the boycotts of BP gas stations, only the little guy who operates the station gets hurt.

Argh!

Like the GM bond holders, the BP stockholders are going to get screwed by the Socialist in the White House!

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: Fannie-Freddie Fix — nuke them!

Fannie-Freddie Fix at $160 Billion With $1 Trillion Worst Case
By Lorraine Woellert and John Gittelsohn

*** begin quote ***

Fannie and Freddie, now 80 percent owned by U.S. taxpayers, already have drawn $145 billion from an unlimited line of government credit granted to ensure that home buyers can get loans while the private housing-finance industry is moribund. That surpasses the amount spent on rescues of American International Group Inc., General Motors Co. or Citigroup Inc., which have begun repaying their debts.

*** end quote ***

You have to be kidding me. When will we cut our losses on this disaster?

Surly even the politicians can see what a disaster this is. And, who are the other 20%? Politically connected friends? Argh!

Repaying. Yeah, this article repeats the “big lie” about repayment.

Got to buy some more gold and silver. It the shumer hits the fan, we’re screwed.

We’ll be the golden horde in the camps.

What will it take to bring on the revolution?

Can it be avoided?

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: Automatic DUI check for all accidents?

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

http://www.suntimes.com/2354708,thanksgiving-day-crash-charges-dropped-060410.article

*** begin quote ***

Prosecutors made two attempts to prove that Ardelean did. After the two-vehicle fatal crash Nov. 22 in Roscoe Village, Ardelean was charged with misdemeanor DUI — later upgraded to a felony. But those charges were dismissed when Cook County Judge Don Panarese ruled there was “no indication” Ardelean, who was off-duty at the time, was drunk. Prosecutors reinstated charges after saying they had a lengthy surveillance videotape showing Ardelean drinking five shots and other drinks at a North Side bar shortly before the crash.

Prosecutors also suggested in pretrial hearings that police the night of the crash turned a blind eye to Ardelean’s intoxication. Among other things, he wasn’t arrested or given a Breathalyzer until seven hours after the crash. But Gainer ruled in April that the supervising officer who ultimately made the arrest didn’t have strong enough evidence to do so. Gainer’s ruling also suppressed key blood-alcohol evidence.

You’d think that ANY police involved accident would have an immediate blood test. Or, they are fired! Caesar’s wife must be above reproach. Ditto for ANY politician or bureaucrat!

OBAMA WATCH CENTRAL

Proposal in Congress puts feds in middle of catastrophe claims

“The ‘Homeowners’ Defense Act,’ H.R. 2555, dubbed the ‘Beach House Bailout,’ requires taxpayers across the country, and in your district, to subsidize insurance for wealthy homeowners along the Florida coastline,” the letter to members of Congress said. “The bill is structured to assist the state of Florida (and to a much smaller extent, California) through federal assistance.”

*** end quote ***

Never mind take over, who wants to subsidize rich people on the Florida coast in mansions?

Let Donald, Rush, and whomever fund their own risks!

As a matter of fact, why is the gooferment involved in “insuring” floods any way?

Can you spell ‘moral hazard’?

POLITICAL: OBH44 has chuptzah about Kenyan Constitution

Barack Obama Praises Kenya’s Draft Constitution Allowing Unlimited Abortions
by Steven Ertelt LifeNews.com Editor

Nairobi, Kenya (LifeNews.com) — President Barack Obama has come under fire from pro-life members of Congress for his administration potentially illegally spending as much as $10 million promoting the new pro-abortion constitution in Kenya. Now, in a new interview, Obama himself carefully urged Kenya residents to support it.

Obama officials were thought to have spent $2 million but Rep. Chris Smith says that figure could exceed $10 million.

A new interview conducted Tuesday with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) has Obama actively promoting the constitution, which would have the effect of overturning the nation’s pro-life laws that prohibit most abortions.

*** end quote ***

Are you kidding me? This is a joke. Right!

Two or ten matters not. Why is Taxpayers’ Money being spent on this?

As a Pro-life Pro-choice fat old white guy injineer, I don’t want to pay for this immoral activity. Abortion is a horrible event. To have the Gooferment involved in it is abhorrent. It’s a terrible choice that a woman has to make. In a perfect world, we’d have lots of resources to make it unnecessary. (That’s the pro-life part of me!) In that perfect world, the Gooferment would have an interest in preserving the life of a future citizen. But we are far from perfect. The Gooferment should butt out because it can’t even find it’s own ass in dark closet! Best leave it to the woman and those she chooses to involve. (That’s the pro-choice part of me!)

Us, little L libertarians, are pro-choice on everything.

(1) Doesn’t OBH44 have enough to do here in this country?

(2) Why are we meddling in Kenya’s affairs?

(3) If he wants to run Kenya, he should grab his birth certificate and run for office there!

(4) As a pro-life, I object to using my tax dollars on something so morally offensive.

(5) As a pro-choicer, we in the USA should MYOB!

Argh!

Obama Administration to Spend $125M to Defend Pro-Abortion Health Care Law
by Steven Ertelt LifeNews.com Editor
June 7, 2010

*** begin quote ***

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — The Obama administration is unveiling a new $125 million publicity campaign over the next five years to promote the pro-abortion health care law. Obama officials are relying on a pro-abortion former senator and a former official of a top pro-abortion group to make the case for the law.

*** end quote ***

Argh!

Where does the gooferment get off using tax money to propagandize the electorate to convince them they are wrong!

It’s immoral.

RECOMMENDED: PAYTRUST

The Rewards of Routine Maintenance

*** begin quote ***

I used to make fun of my cousin, Nick, for this. Nick has tens of thousands of dollars in the bank, yet he’s always getting late fees for things like the electric bill. “What the heck?” I asked him once. “How can this be possible?” He shrugged. “I don’t know,” he said. “I get the bills in the mail, put them on the table, and then I forget about them. They get buried under other mail. It’s only three or four months later that I find them again.” This used to baffle me, but now I understand.

*** end quote ***

May I make an unusual suggestion? (It’s unusual for me. Not that I’m making a suggestion. I am after all a “know it all” and never leave a suggestion unexpressed. — “That’s supposed to be a joke, son.” Yosemite Sam — I try ONLY to suggest things that are free. This ain’t free.)

PAYRUST

It costs about 15$/month. For this, they will receive your bills by USMAIL or over the net and put it in your “inbox”. It can automatically “action” your bills; paying them in full or in part. And, it emails you weekly summaries, reminders, and such. You pay them on their site and they send the checks or e-payments.

All very organized.

I recommend it highly. Especially if you’re disorganized, travel a lot, or have psych issues with bills in the mail.

It’s a great service.

At the end of the year, they will send you a CD of your stuff for 20$. It’s all very useful.

And, I recommend it. Highly.

INTERESTING: Write your own obit

Monday, June 14, 2010

One thing that I have learned form reading all the old Jaspers’ obits is that you should write your own.

You should have your own “doomsday book”. It will come eventually to all of us. The financial writer all advocate having all your details in one place for your executor to access. Passwords as well.

I’ll have to start working on mine.

What color should it be?

Black? Nah, too somber. Inside I was a barrel of fun.

White? Nah, too pure. I certainly wasn’t that.

Pink? Nah, too gay. Not me.

Blue? Nah, too stodgy. That’s not the fun loving guy I was.

Paisley? Nah, too frivolous for a serious topic. I was always serious.

Guess it will be a recycled Green. For Jaspers. And, cheap. I was never cheap except in my old age.

Now where did I put my “treasure chest”. All I need is the eye patch to match my scar.

Argh!
