Sympathetically, especially with us older “turkeys”, geography lashes us to the deck of the Titanic as the band plays sadly “Nearer My God To Thee”. Commitments are the tiny threads that continually add to bind us to our geographic comfort zone. The Youth just out of school don’t even consider it; the Old “turkey” has no choice but to. Old parents, children, and supportive friends are the “ball and chain” of our thinking.

Sad to say, I understand not being able to flit around the countryside, hither and yon, pursung the gold that’s in “them thar hills”. When you have responsibilities, you have to be responsible.

Hopefully, one can blend all the “requirements” and be open to the opportunities that the Universe giving you. It’s always what you need; not necessarily what you want. If you can recognize it. Sometimes it’s a wake up call to face facts. An old stuck-in-the-jobsearch-mud “turkey” is just that. Stuck in the mud. Being sucked down, hardening, and fixating that poor bird to a spot where one has to take what’s offered. Even if it’s just the greeter at WalMart.

Beware callow youth where you take your first job. It just might be that first thread that ties you down. For sixty or seventy years! Be sure you like that dirt under your feet. You my be there a long long time.

LIBERTY: Glenn Beck began calling himself a “libertarian”

Monday, February 16, 2009

http://www.glennbeck.com/

BTW, Glenn recently stopped calling himself a “conservative” and began calling himself a “libertarian”. (Change of network. Change of time slot. Change of label?) As a little Llibertarian, I’ll wait to hear more before I agree with the label. Just like Bob Barr (the recent big L libertarian presidential candidate, it takes more than a miracle on the proverbial road to Damascus to make one a real libertarian. Zero Aggression Principle? MYOB? Make peace; not war. (That’s not pacifism; just don’t start trouble.) Ignore people’s private decisions. Yes, it’s a LONG way from so called “conservatism” to “libertarianism”. Well, we’ll see about Glenn’s relabeling.

Globalism vs. Ethno-nationalism
by Patrick J. Buchanan
01/30/2009

*** begin quote ***

Standing before the Siegessaule, the Victory Column that commemorates Prussia’s triumphs over Denmark, Austria and France in the wars that birthed the Second Reich, Barack Obama declared himself a “citizen of the world” and spoke of “a world that stands as one.”

Globalists rejoiced. And the election of this son of a white teenager from Kansas and a black academic from Kenya is said to have ushered us into the new “post-racial” age.

Are we deluding ourselves? Worldwide, the mightiest force of the 20th century, ethnonationalism — that creator and destroyer of nations and empires; that enduring drive of peoples for a nation-state where their faith and culture is dominant and their race or tribe is supreme — seems more manifest than ever.

*** end quote ***

It does seem that the USA is bucking history. Fighting against a tide of religious zealotry. Seeking to maintain freedom in an ever increasing climate of tyranny.

We need to launch a new effort for “political freedom”, just like we have “religious freedom” here. With calm civility. Tolerance.

But we must stand firm that “all men are created equal”.

Unfortunately, e seem to also be swept into intolerance of any idea that doesn’t match our own.

Freedom for everyone!

MONEY: TLOCM “the land of critical mass” is 10M$!

Sunday, February 15, 2009

Bob Brinker talks about “the land of critical mass”. This is the place in your life where money is no longer a concern and you are able to live the lifestyle of your desire.

5 year @ 12 month ladder = 60 units

100k per year = 5% of 2,000,000

5 year CDs @ 5% is 10 M$ = 60 monthly 5 year CDs @ 166, 666$ for each CD

So the “land of critical mass” is about 10M$.

Wow.

JOBSEARCH: Layoffs are the American “Way of Life”

Sunday, February 15, 2009

Layoffs are the new American “Way of Life”.

For “salarymen” like us, it’s “early retirement”.

As a nation, I’m not sure we can afford it. It would seem that we need an ERISA-like law to protect the older workers. 40 plus!

Perhaps, instead of employment at will, it becomes a “default employment contract”. At 40, you have to get 12 months warning that your contract will not be renewed.

Figure retirement age for Social Security is 66. Society has some obligation to ensure you can work to that age.

At 60, it’s a six year contract?

F(40 years of age) = 12 F(60) = 72

x1-x2 = 60 – 40 = 20

y1-y2 = 72 – 12 = 60

3 months extension for every year of age.

45 = 1 year + 15 months. 50 = 42 months. 55 = 57 60 = 62 months

Not exactly sure how that would be formulated. Like pension vesting?

Clearly, only government workers have pensions. So industry got round that restriction. And, got back to being able to “nuke” people without a care in the world.

I’m also reformulating the advice I give turkeys in the 20 to 40 range. They need their own form of “unemployment insurance”. Try to convince them of it.

POLITICAL: Abortion is genocide

The George Bailey Effect
Posted: January 31, 2009
1:00 am Eastern
By Larry Burkett

Editor’s note: The late Larry Burkett, popular Christian financial counselor and author, penned this article in 1998. It is a compelling “response” to Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent statement that the economy benefits from “family planning.” Joseph Slife contributed to this column.

*** begin quote ***

As the preceding evidence demonstrates, abortion is not simply a matter of private conscience, but of public concern. Abortion-on-demand has effects that are rippling throughout our society and could even threaten our future liberties.

This is why abortion, even if all moral arguments are totally discounted, cannot be ignored in framing public policy. Simply writing off abortion as a “moral” or a “religious” issue is a short-sighted approach that fails to reckon its economic and demographic consequences.

We can’t undo the past, of course. We can’t undo the fact that we have had 35 million George Baileys, people never born, people whose lives were never allowed to touch other lives. Indeed they have left an “awful hole.” But for the sake of our nation’s economic future and national security, as well as its moral character, we must resolve to promote from this time forward an ethic that is pro-family and pro-children. Only then can America continue to have a wonderful life.

*** end quote ***

When Pelosi and the Obama Democrat “liberals” advnace the pro-abortion agenda, everyone has to think of the “George Bailey” effect.

Have we aborted the future of America?

Like a self-imposed genocide.

GAMBLING: One way to cheat at roulette

Feds Bust Ring of Alleged Casino Cheaters By Kevin Poulsen February 11, 2009 | 6:36:30 PM

Federal prosecutors in Tacoma, Washington are charging four alleged members of a cheating ring that hit roulette tables at three Indian casinos before being arrested last November.

The men are accused of pulling a simple scam that takes advantage of the variably-colored “non-value chips” issued at roulette tables to identify different gamers’ bets. Every player at the table is assigned one of eight colors. The chips have a default value of $1 each, but a high roller who wants to bet more on each spin can ask the croupier to count his chips at a higher value, such as $25.

Here’s one way to win at roulette. One wonders at what level of theft it could be detected? Could it be done on a “retail” level?

MONEY: How does burdening future generations help us?

Friday, February 13, 2009

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/01/republicans_won.html

In the House Republicans’ meeting with Obama on January 27th, Maryland’s sole Republican Congressman, Roscoe Bartlett, said it best:

“Mr. President, I probably come at this from a slightly different perspective. I remember when FDR beat Hoover in 1932. So I remember the Great Depression very well. I don’t remember any of the many government programs affecting the course of the Depression. Government programs didn’t work then; I don’t know why we think they would work now. Mr. President, I think our obsessive borrowing has fully mortgaged my kids and my grandkids. Now we’re working on mortgaging my two great-grandkids. Mr. President, I think it’s more than a little bit selfish to try to solve our economic problems which we created by burdening future generations yet to be born.”

SURPRISE! Dems Break Promise: Stimulus Bill to Floor Friday
by Connie Hair
02/12/2009

*** begin quote ***

In a press conference Thursday, the House Republican leadership spoke candidly about being kept out of the House-Senate conference on the Obama-Pelosi-Reid so-called “economic stimulus” bill. They confirmed they had not yet seen the text of the bill as of 4 p.m.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he was unsure how many Democrats would vote with Republicans again on this bill but that he thought Republicans “may get a few” Democrats to side with them. The fact that the Demos have now broken their promise to have the public able to see the bill for 48 hours may drive more Dems into the Republican camp.

“[I] don’t know, ‘cause they haven’t seen the bill either,” Boehner said.

TECHNOLOGY: The risks of cloud computing

Thursday, February 12, 2009

Vista News (email newsletter)
Vol. 2, # 56 – Jan 29, 2009 – Issue # 65
Venturing into the Cloud – A Little Bit at a Time
Editor’s Corner

*** begin quote ***

One frequently expressed suspicion of the cloud computing concept is that the companies offering these services are a little like schoolyard drug dealers. The first ones are free, but once they get you hooked (that is, once the cloud replaces desktop applications completely), then they’ll start charging you for the service and you’ll have to keep paying and paying and paying to use your computer productively.

Folks don’t like that idea. They know that technically, they don’t “own” the software they buy in a box or download from a vendor’s web site, but they feel comfortable in the knowledge that after they pay a one-time licensing fee, they can use that program for as long as they want without paying more – at least until they change operating systems or hardware. The notable exception is antivirus and other anti-malware programs, but the rationale there is that you aren’t paying a subscription fee for use of the program itself, but for the new definitions that it has to download on a regular basis.

Most of the individual computer users I’ve talked to about this say that even if the overall cost turns out to be lower, they want to pay for their software up front instead of via a monthly or annual subscription. They absolutely hate the idea that if they stop paying, their applications will stop working (or in the case of storage services, they might be locked out of their data). It’s similar to the way most people would prefer to buy a car rather than leasing it; they like that feeling that it’s theirs until they decide to get rid of it, that someone can’t just take it away from them (although I guess in the case of most car buyers today, that’s just an illusion because the vast majority of folks finance their vehicles rather than paying for them in full).

*** end quote ***

That’s the essential concern. Switch from free to pay?

No, I think the concern is that the “service” — free or pay — just goes away taking your data with it. Kodak pictures is the ONLY one that I’ve adopted and I have been EXTREMELY carefull to keep a complete backup. But it’s still a concern.

And, what do you do when you can’t get a network connect at a price you can afford?

INTERESTING: Should economists be held accountable for their forecasts

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

“How much should economists be held accountable for their forecasts?  Should we view them the same as TV weather forecasters, where the public acknowledges that the science of forecasting can be highly unpredictable and therefore all predictions should be taken with a grain of salt? Or should economists be held to a higher standard? For instance, their forecasts often dictate how a state spends, or saves, its money. At what point should they face some kind of penalty for incorrectly predicting economic changes?”

What’s next? Holding politician’s accountable? Don’t make me laff!

The joke in college was that “you could lay all the economists end to end from here to the moon and never reach a conclusion”!

Sort of like the archeologist’s theory about a dead civilization. Or, a scientist’s assumption how the world began. Who cares? But the question of economics is really important to our life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Economics is the dismal science. It tells us that there is NOT enough to go around. We have to share scarce resources. Make smart decisions. That there is no goose laying golden eggs.

So we have to have good economics. Good forecasts. Great ideas.

We have to hold them accountable. And, not just with the media driving it’s agenda.

Maybe we need “certified” forecasts. Where the economist bets a paycheck on that. Get it wrong and he has to become the WalMart greeter!

Same for politicians.

Barney Frank for his FannieMay and FreddieMac predictions, WalMart!

Argh!

RANT: Medical treatments will be tracked electronically by a federal system {Breaking News}

Ruin Your Health With the Obama Stimulus Plan
Commentary by Betsy McCaughey
reported on Bloomberg

*** begin quote ***

Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) — Republican Senators are questioning whether President Barack Obama’s stimulus bill contains the right mix of tax breaks and cash infusions to jump-start the economy.

Tragically, no one from either party is objecting to the health provisions slipped in without discussion. These provisions reflect the handiwork of Tom Daschle, until recently the nominee to head the Health and Human Services Department.

Senators should read these provisions and vote against them because they are dangerous to your health. (Page numbers refer to H.R. 1 EH, pdf version).

The bill’s health rules will affect “every individual in the United States” (445, 454, 479). Your medical treatments will be tracked electronically by a federal system. Having electronic medical records at your fingertips, easily transferred to a hospital, is beneficial. It will help avoid duplicate tests and errors.

But the bill goes further. One new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will monitor treatments to make sure your doctor is doing what the federal government deems appropriate and cost effective. The goal is to reduce costs and “guide” your doctor’s decisions (442, 446). These provisions in the stimulus bill are virtually identical to what Daschle prescribed in his 2008 book, “Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis.” According to Daschle, doctors have to give up autonomy and “learn to operate less like solo practitioners.”

*** end quote ***

Surprise, surprise, surprise.

We’re like the Jim Neighbor’s character, the village idiot, and we’ll be “suprised” that this “stimulus bill” has a lot of “interesting ideas” in it.

DownSizeDC is right: Read The Bills (make the congresscritters read what they are voting on), One Subject At A Time (No mash ups), and all their other suggestions. (www.downsizedc.org)

This is a disaster. It has NO —- none, zero, nada —- redeeming value.

It’s going to send us down the road to debt and a ultimately societal collapse. Not in the next thirty minutes. Thankfully, I won’t have to pick up the pieces, but a terrible legacy to leave behind.

I wonder if the citizens of the Roman Empire saw it coming as well? Debt, Inflation, Circuses, collapse.

Privacy and security down the tubes. There are no computer break ins or leaks. The gooferment can’t secure its prisons, but your medical records will be just fine. Ask ARod how it feels to have private medical records discussed by the President on National TV!

MONEY: Insurance and employment considering the meltdown

Monday, February 9, 2009

Unfortunately, most people get their health and life insurance via their employer.

That presents a problem when you get nuked (i.e., fired, laid off, or quit).

Health insurance is expensive. Hospital bills are catastrophic.

If you have the opportunity, it may be worthwhile to pick up a catastrophic health insurance policy on your own or through a group. Fraternal organizations have such; as do groups such as Independent Consulting organizations.

Money well spent.

Also life insurance. But that is much cheaper and easier.

Now, with respect to life insurance, it’s always better to have one policy than two. The setup fee is wasted. But, I’m going to suggest that you rethink that strategy. ESPECIALLY if life insurance is very important to your family. (Two earner family with children or One earner family with children.)

You may wish to have TWO life insurance policies with DIFFERENT insurers, despite the added cost.

We haven’t seen the current subprime creditmeltdown financial mess hit the Insurance Companies. … … Yet?

By having two policies, you’ll have two ticket in that sweepstakes.

Life insurance is cheap. (Minimal gooferment regulation!)

Health insurance isn’t. (Lot’s of gooferment “help” there!) But, going “naked” is potentially disastrous.

Suggest an insurance review NOW!

# – # – #

Remember the news reports that 9 out of 10 financial professionals at Cantor Fitzgerald had no life insurance? And, 9/11 happened. I remember my grandparents saying: “A family man, who dies without life insurance, doesn’t die, he absconds.” Big word for them “absconds”. But they were surprising folks. It’s a true then as it is now.
