Wells Fargo fires a dozen employees for pretending to work – here’s how they tried to get away with it

Dozens of Wells Fargo employees were fired after the bank investigated claims that they were pretending to work.

The workers, who were all employed in the firm’s wealth and investment management unit, were let go last month after it was discovered they were allegedly involved in ‘simulation of keyboard activity,’ Bloomberg reported Thursday.

According to disclosures filed with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the former employees were ‘creating an impression of active work’ through simulation tools.

Back when I had a life, I supervised big and small groups.  Often, geographically spread across the USA and in one assignment globally.  Early in my career, I hated “evaluations”.  So I turned it into a game.  I’d ask the employee or consultant how they would like to be managed?  Most were in favor of a “low touch; high autonomy” environment.  Me 2!  So, I’d ask them for objective criteria that they could use to demonstrate productivity and thus high ratings.

Later, AT&T came up with “ratings and rankings” to merge groups of employees’ performance across divisions and departments.  That was right up our strong suit.  When you could make statements like: “Joe cleared 95% of his tickets in less than and hour with high end User satisfaction ratings” or “Jane completed over 700 security exceptions with a MTTR of 4 hours and has received 36 positive User feedback emails to the Division Head from his counterpart.”  It was easy to justify that “my” Joe or Jane was “better” than  “their” Sam or Sarah. If “my” people didn’t get that “Outstanding” rating  — which meant more salary or bonus money and promotions  — I could tell them why and they could come up with their own “improvement plans”.  Win for them and win for me.

I got high ratings for employee performance, morale, attendance, safety, and all sort of other stuff.  And, I was always AMAZED that “leadership” never asked me how I did it.  Which was fine with me.  I was happy to keep my “special sauce” secret.

In looking for a “job”, sell your past successes “objectively” and in metrics that focus on creating value for others.

JOBFINDING: Remember your real job is finding your next job

Google has laid off its Python Foundation team (1 minute read)

Google has asked its recently laid-off Python Foundation team to train its replacements, who will be in the Munich office. The company similarly laid off its finance department a few weeks ago, moving positions outside of the country where they are cheaper. The Python Foundation team maintained a stable version of Python within Google, tools to keep thousands of third-party packages constantly updated from their open source versions, highly customized tools, and much more. It also acted as a help desk for Python users at Google. The team performed its duties for years with fewer than 10 people.

JOBSFINDING: Learn from the old brokers — Keep a shadow book

Catherine Herridge Shares Union Statement Condemning CBS News’ Seizure of Her Notes
Kristina Wong
23 Feb 2024 5:12

*** begin quote ***

Veteran investigative journalist Catherine Herridge, whom CBS News laid off last week, shared a statement on Friday that appeared to confirm that the network had seized notes from her office after she had been let go in an unusual and heavy-handed manner that called into question the network’s motives.

Herridge, who reported on the Justice Department and other national security matters, had been reporting on the Hunter Biden laptop scandal for the network and was in the middle of a First Amendment case after refusing to turn over to an Obama-appointed federal judge the name of a source for an investigative piece she wrote for Fox News in 2017.

“Important update via @sagaftra,” Herridge posted on X, along with the union’s statement.

The statement came after an article on Tuesday by The Hill columnist and former CBS News legal analyst Jonathan Turley that said CBS News had seized Herridge’s files — a highly unusual practice when a news employee is laid off. It said:

SAG-AFTRA strongly condemns CBS News’ decision to seize Catherine Herridge’s reporter notes and research from her office, including confidential source information. This action is deeply concerning to the union because it sets a dangerous precedent for all media professionals and threatens the very foundation of the First Amendment.

It is completely inappropriate for an employer to lay off a reporter and take the very unusual step of retaining and searching the reporter’s files, inclusive of confidential source identification and information. From a First Amendment standpoint, a media corporation with a commitment to journalism calling a reporter’s research and confidential source reporting “proprietary information” is both shocking and absurd.

The retention of a media professional’s reporting materials by their former employer is a serious break with traditional practices which supports the immediate return of reporting materials. We urge CBS to return this material to Catherine in support of the most basic of First Amendment principles. We are encouraged by recent outreach by CBS News to SAG-AFTRA on this matter, and we are hopeful that it will be resolved shortly.

I have often blogged about the need to recognize that you are not your job AND your employer is nothing more than cruel heartless soulless monster.  I learned this from being fired four times in my career.  Bit after the first time, I was never again caught unaware.  And in one case, profited from it.

FROM A PAST BLOG POST

On Wall Street, it was “common practice” for brokers (aka “financial consultants”, :”wealth managers”, etc. etc.) to keep a duplicate “shadow book” at home. This would be all their contacts and their information as well as portfolio holdings record. When they were “walked out”, their ”significant others”, who were not covered my NDAs or non-competes, would be on the phone letting “their Customers” know the news. Usually in a day or two, they were hired by a competitor and “their Customers” would be transferring their account to the new firm. Often, before a replacement was found for the departed, the Customer were already gone. That’s called “job security”. Brokerage house were always trying to discourage that “personal relationship” by inserting “assistants” into the process and relationships. But “high net worth” individuals want that “personal high maintenance touch”.

So you must ALWAYS keep an insurance policy that your “resources” never disappear.

In the cited story, not only was this reporter’s material seized but even her twitter handle appears to be inexorably linked to her former employer.

Remember the Company laptop, phone, and even your twitter handle is at risk.

Diversify, duplicate, and back up to your own resources.

For the longest time, personally, I would regularly print ALL emails and, when I got home, scaned them on a high-speed scanner and immediately shredded them.  Never knew what I’d need later in life. And form time to time, they came in handy.  With the advent of better search tools for PDFs, it’s an even better and easier habit to do.

YMMV but just remember what you are dealing with.

JOBFINDING: Your “job” is to “find your NEXT job”

FROM REDDIT

I was fired by my employer today. They wouldn’t let me collect any personal belongings from my desk except my wallet, my keys and my own personal phone. Can they do this and if so how long are they allowed to keep my things?

MY CONTRIBUTION

The lesson I learned was to keep duplicate files offsite and always remember that my “job” was to always be looking for my “next job”. Once, I had an offer in hand and resignation letter written, when I was fired as “surplus” about 2PM on a Friday afternoon. I was prepared to hand it in at 4PM and be “walked out”. Thanks to the timing, I was walked out with a very nice severance check which I wouldn’t have gotten if I’d quit. Started my new job on Monday with a renewed outlook to find my next job.

TL:DR Always be looking for your next job and plan / act accordingly!

Picking up a second language can lead to a salary increase of around 2%. It also opens up a range of new careers and could easily make a difference in a job interview. Apps like Duolingo and Memrise are free, fun, and provide a solid base for picking up an additional language. Admittedly, they can only take you so far. But it is still totally possible to achieve fluency for free if you hop on to something like Reddit’s Language Exchange and find a native speaker to help practice your skills.

When I think of all the time in my life I wasted do Quadrant 4 activities (i.e., not important and not urgent), I have an eternal regret.

If I had learned Chinese or Japanese, then how much easier would it have been to get ANOTHER job on Wall Street?

Don’t waste your time like I did.  You only have so much!

JOBSEARCH: Shadowstats says 20% unemployment rate

Stone Cold Proof That Government Economic Numbers Are Being Highly Manipulated
Michael Snyder
The Economic Collapse
June 26th, 2014

*** begin quote ***

The Federal Reserve would have us believe that the unemployment rate in the U.S. has fallen from a peak of 10.0 percent during the recession all the way down to 6.3 percent now.

But according to shadowstats.com, the broadest measure of unemployment is well over 20 percent and has kept rising since the end of the last recession.

And according to the Federal Reserve’s own numbers, the percentage of working age Americans with a job has barely increased over the past four years…

*** end quote ***

Stunning!

And I have no doubt that’s closer to the truth.

Add all the folks going on disability, “retiring early” wether they want to or not, and the young?

It’s a national disaster and a disgrace.

Argh!

Slash the Gooferment!

USDA, HHS, Homeland “Security” …

Sorry but we are SO broke!
