JOBSEARCH: 10 half day part time jobs

Monday, June 25, 2007

I think you can definitely apply one of my other ideas (i.e., one full time job can equal 10 half day part time jobs in your own business).

If you have your own business, then you could section that ~40 hours in whatever form works. Pile on part-time gooferment positions, teaching, mowing lawns, whatever, and you’ve got it.

One of my old friends is NY real estate lawyer and he has four part-time jobs to supplement his practice. One is as a ref. He treats it all as a biz and keeps careful track of his expenses, earnings, and time. He been doing it happily for a decade. You could too.

>if I should apply for a half-time job in spite of the money,
>possibly while starting a web design consultancy

Well certainly, apply. Assume that it’s morning five days a week. That gives you afternoons to develop other opportunities. If you’re “out” and burning that cash, then at least it slows the crash into broke-ness. I think you have to be flexible.

How about teaching? Are there opportunities for tutoring “students” (i.e., children; elementary schoolers; high schoolers; college students; business people; senior citizens)?

Have your heard of LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project)? It puts Linux local area networks into schools and other places to avoid the Microsoft tax and upgrade treadmill. How about installing and supporting open source packages like Moodle (a quiz type package)? For example, for a teacher, in school or business, who needs to educate and test on the cheap, put up Moodle and load the content for the teacher and support.

I think if you’re going to go the 10 part-time jobs route, then you’re going to have to be on the bleeding edge in terms of identifying, learning, deploying, and implementing “stuff”. I’d be super ALERT for “fall out”, “reuse”, and “spin offs”.

Fall out are ideas that come out of something you do and you capture it and exploit it. Reuse is figuring something out once “at cost” and then “mark it up and profit from it”. Spin off is identifying the pre-cursor, thinning streamline, fattening offering more, or follow on activities for profit.

To pull this off, you’re going to have to be aggressively sensitive measured disciplinarian. Aggressive in seeking any earning opportunity. Sensitive in “feeling” any hint of a paying gig. Measured in all the metrics that you think move cash into your checkbook. And, finally disciplined in not giving away for free what you should be charging for, project overruns or scope creep, or “lazy”.

Some Eastern & Western philosophies believe that it’s the Id that give the great ideas that the SuperEgo scares you into believing that they can’t work. Your fears and decisions got you to where you are now. Satisfied with that? Yes, keep doing what you are doing. No, try something different. “Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.”

LIBERTY: trade and friendly relations with anybody

Goodbye and Good Luck

What the knuckleheads in Washington have created is an empire of delusions and illusions. It’s time for the nation to wake up and adopt a realistic foreign policy, which is trade and friendly relations with anybody who wants it. As for those who don’t, we simply ignore them. We don’t need to be anybody’s enemy.

As for defense, defending our space is easy and cheap. As another mark of imperial stupidity, the rulers of the empire can’t even do that while they fail overseas.

PRODUCTIVITY: Lessons from my week end!

Monday, June 25, 2007

One of my older relatives was driving to a party where they had been before last year. For a variety of reasons, they didn’t have the address or their usual tools. And, got confused and got lost. They drove around looking for my car. After a while they got really confused.

So went to a relative’s house, where a young whippersnapper, looked up the name on the net, mapquested it, and led them over. Great save.

Why they didn’t have my cell phone I forgot to ask. Calling Frau’s cellphone is a waste of effort. She hates it. (Yes, I made her get it.)

Lessons: Put a family phone book in the glove box of every elder driver’s car. That way, when they are in the car, they always have the [hone book with them.

Lesson: Have my cell phone on the public net. So if you know my shore house address. Divide these three numbers by the address and you’ll have my cell. 46,308 10,659 184,875l

FUN: E-voting gets the knife

Saturday, June 23, 2007

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0483726/

Man of the Year
with Robin Williams
as President Elect Tom Dobbs

*** begin quote ***

Tom Dobbs, comedic host of a political talk show – a la Bill Maher and Jon Stewart – runs for President of the US as an independent candidate who, after an issues-oriented campaign and an explosive performance in the final debate, gets just enough votes to win. Trouble is he owes his victory to a computer glitch in the national touch-screen voting system marketed by Delacroy, a private company with a rising stock price. To protect their fortune, Delacroy executives want to keep the glitch a secret, but one programmer, Eleanor Green, wants Dobbs to know the truth. Can she get to him? Written by jhailey.

*** end quote ***

Correct me if I am wrong, but did this movie just put a stake thru the heart of the vampire known as “electronic voting”?

Systems provided by Delacroy … err I mean Diebold … could manipulate the results of an election. Based on the movie, I’ve just emailed Ron Paul to change his name to Ron Paaul. (SPOILER: In the movie, the buggy computer program elects the candidate with the “best” double letter.) So if anyone wants to debate about paperless electronic internet voting and tell you how good it will be yada yada yada, just rent them this movie. That should finish up the discussion!

They say many a true word is said in jest.

Some times concepts can get thru via humor. My non-techie spouse said after watching this that it would now never be approved here. Hope she’s right.

This film IMHO says it all about that topic. And, says it in way that comes across to the average person.

fjohn

p.s.: The movie did have one other great line. Tom Dobbs says “Politicians are a lot like diapers. They should be changed frequently, and for the same reasons.” If you gather I’m no fan of politicians, you’re correct. They are like diapers!

Payoff Credit Card

QUESTION

Asked by “Jessica B”

How do I pay off my credit card? I work full time and just cant get ahead..?

I need to pay off my credit card and I have tried not using them.. paying on time.. etc. etc. I dont want to take out a loan to pay them off bc Im trying to save up for a car. I work full time, and go to school. Should I get another job. It just feels like I can never get ahead.. Any help would be loved! Thanks.

ANSWER

Dear “Jessica B”:

Well the credit cards don’t want you to get “ahead”. They’d like you to keep paying the 18 to 30% interest for the next 30 years. Credit cards are the quicksand of the financial world. If you struggle, you’ve drowned. If you relax and go with the flow, you can swim out of it.

Just so I understand, you have one or more credit cards and you feel like you can never catch up. Well, I’m no Suzzie Orman or Dave Ramsey, but fell into the same trap when I was young a long time ago. So, I got out of it and you can too.

Here’s a suggestion and some thoughts.

Suggestion: Find a credit union. Then drop by and chat. They are very nice people who have a different mission from a bank. They want members; not interest charges.

If you think that you can’t escape, you can’t. The credit card company minimum payments will get you free and clear in forty years.

You need to know EXACTLY what you are spending every penny on. Get a little book at Staples for a few bucks. They have a cheap brown stitched one with a column for figures. AND, record every expense. (You can also transcribe it to a check book program like Ace Money Lite http://www.mechcad.net/products/acemoney/index_lite.shtml (It’s free!) to manage your budget.

Then for every expenditure, ask do I really really really need it? Then, try a do without it. The daily expenditures for coffee and paper add up.

Take a look at the sites in my sources for further thoughts.

You can do it. I have confidence in you. Hope this helps. I’m interested how it works out for you. Drop me a note sometime. My blog has other helpful “stuff”.

But, now the unexplained and silent account suspension has made me concerned.

I’ve been getting “smarter” so I have my own domain and can move. I have my old posts backed up in various forms.

So, I think, and I’m asking for opinions, it might be smart to pick a service provider that others use. Has anyone moved from free to hosted?

Anyone published a check list?

If not, maybe we can use my experience as a “guinea pig” and develop one.

Open for suggestions, as I am looking at what appears to be a very big and very dirty stable. :-(

The problem is that, if your contact has brain freeze and says “don’t know”, then you could accumulate the “five strikes and you’re dead” LinkedIn suspension. You may, or may not, get it lifted. RANT: Excluding Ron Paul!

Thursday, June 21, 2007

FROM MY EMAIL

*** begin quote ***

Dear Mr. Failor and Mr. Sheffler,

I am amazed at this report. I can’t understand why you would exclude the only candidate from either party that will give us true tax relief, allow everyone the Freedom of Religion that we are being deprived of by the encroaching federal gooferment, and in general shake up the national debate by urging a return to constitutional. I am outraged that you would seek to marginalize “my candidate”. Yes, my candidate. For the first time since Ron Regan, I have sent some modest sums to the Ron Paul campaign because I believe he’s the best candidate I’ve seen since Regan. If you parade a bunch of “stuffed suits” that are all big gooferment clones, then you will lose any credibility that you really want “Tax Relief” or “Freedom of Religion”.

I am forwarding this to every networking contact, fellow alumni, and relative in Iowa. I hope they help you understand how important it is for you to invite Ron Paul. Or, if you persist and don’t, that they understand which organization are “phony labels” and which are really trying to live up to their name.

Ron Paul Excluded in Iowa

June 19, 2007

Iowans for Tax Relief and Iowa Christian Alliance will host a presidential candidates forum on Saturday, June 30th in Des Moines. Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Sam Brownback, Jim Gilmore, Mike Huckabee, Tommy Thompson, and Tom Tancredo will participate.

Ron Paul, however, will not participate. Why? Because he wasn’t invited.

We heard about this forum from numerous supporters in Iowa who asked why Dr. Paul was not going to participate. Those supporters assumed that Dr. Paul was invited.

The campaign office had not received an invitation so we called this morning; thinking we might have misplaced the invitation or simply overlooked it. Lew Moore, our campaign manager, called Mr. Edward Failor, an officer of Iowans for Tax Relief, to ask about it. To our shock, Mr. Failor told us Dr. Paul was not invited; he was not going to be invited; and he would not be allowed to participate. And when asked why, Mr. Failor refused to explain. The call ended.

Lew then called Mr. Steve Sheffler, president of the Iowa Christian Alliance, to talk with him. Mr. Sheffler did not answer so Lew left a message. He has yet to respond.

Why are the Iowans for Tax Relief and the Iowa Christian Alliance excluding the one Republican candidate who scored at the top of every online poll taken after the MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN debates? Why are they denying Iowans the opportunity to hear from the Republican presidential candidate whose popularity is growing by the day?

We couldn’t get answers to these questions from Messrs. Failor and Sheffler. Maybe you’ll have better luck. Their contact information is below.

It’s ironic that on the same day we learned the Iowans for Tax Relief and the Iowa Christian Alliance excluded Dr. Paul from their candidates forum, we received a call from ABC News confirming Dr. Paul’s participation in its nationally broadcast August 5th debate to be held in Des Moines.

LIBERTY: Any service at the barrel of a gun … is immoral

The (Postal) Empire Strikes Back

***Begin Quote***

With kudos to Marc Stevens for originally using this metaphor, delivering any service at the barrel of a gun – which is how all government services are delivered – is immoral. (It doesn’t matter if the service is delivered directly by a government agency, or by an agency that operates under government authority and/or heavy regulation.) This issue is morally clear no matter how much anyone likes that service, or how many people ostensibly benefit from that service, or how widespread that service is, or how long that service has existed.

The bottom line is: If your service is so great, you should be willing to deliver it voluntarily, without government protection or legal requirement. Furthermore, the fact that something “good” comes of your initial act of aggression is irrelevant.

Indian Share Investor

QUESTION

Asked by “Rajesh”

My thoughts is correct??? about my future !!!!?

i want to be a investor in indian share market.
it is right or wrong ?
please answer this dear all….

ANSWER

Dear “Rajesh”:

Well, it’s a little hard to tell someone, anyone, that their “thoughts are incorrect”. It’s a little like telling some one that their opinion is wrong. How can an opinion be wrong? If I say my opinion is X, then the only way it can be “wrong” is if my opinion is really Y or Z and I lied, forgot, or had a brain freeze. But, opinions, your thoughts, can rarely be “wrong”. It’s obvious that English isn’t your first language, or your typing leaves something to be desired. And, you don’t tell us you age or country. But permit me to make some observations and give you an opinion.

I’m going to assume that you are young and trying to decide on a career path. I don’t know where in your life you are: under parent’s wing, striking out on you own, plowing your “field”, “harvesting rewards”, or planning your estate. But, assuming you are in stage one or two, I would observe that it’s best to keep your options open. It gives you future flexibility. Clearly if you said doctor, lawyer, or indian chief (n.b., that’s an American joke describing the head of native american indian’s tribe and used as metaphor for jobs you have to be born into), you have to take a certain path. To be an “investor in the indian share market”, which I assume to be a trader in the Indian Stock market), you can do that by aiming your career path in that direction.

My suggestion is that you, take the advice I’ve given in the past: (1) manage your finances carefully and not get into “bad” debts (i.e., student loan for a useful degree or home mortgage is “good” debt; a car loan is “iffy”; credit card and consumer debt is “bad”); (2) get an education for a white collar job; (3) get a blue collar skill (i.e., I have never seen a poor plumber); (4) if you can, have one or more web based businesses; (5) make sure you have and enjoy all the experiences that make life worth living (i.e., party a little); (6) make the world a better place (i.e., be a “good person” how ever you define it).

So, if that means “being an investor”, then go for it. But, I’d urge you to look for things that give you more choices in the future, not less.

Hope this helps. I’m interested how it works out for you. Drop me a note sometime. My blog may have helpful “stuff”.

LIBERTY: no law that does not apply equally

The Law Versus Orders
By Walter E. Williams
Wednesday, June 20, 2007

***Begin Quote***

Twenty-five years ago, during a dinner conversation with Nobel Laureate economist/philosopher Friedrich A. Hayek, I asked him if he could propose one law that would restore, promote and preserve liberty in our country, what would that law be? Hayek answered that the law he’d propose would read: Congress shall enact no law that does not apply equally to all Americans. Hayek’s suggestion for full equality before the law was both simple and profound and would do untold wonders in fostering the liberties envisioned by our Founders. But I’m betting that most Americans would greet Hayek’s proposal with contempt after they realized that it would mean Congress wouldn’t be able enact orders and play favorites with different Americans.

***End Quote***

Well, I’m glad to see Professor Williams resume his winning ways.

He’s now redeemed himself from that last comment that could have implied he supported taxation for education. Since taxes are theft, it appeared that he was advocating something he knew was immoral. Many called him on it. (me2) He responded that one can’t get from gooferment education in one ump. He was proposing a two step. Separate operation from funding. Kill the gooferment operation. Then, kill the gooferment funding. One can legitimately question if even that can be accomplished without bloodshed.

Here, he is citing Hayek, the great economist in the Austrian style of Economics, who wrote the Road to Serfdom. And, pointing out how far the USA has strayed from it’s founding.

Sigh!

More Dirt Shoveled on Second Amendment

***Begin Quote***

On April 24th, we alerted folks to HR 297, the disastrous “Mental Health” bill being pushed through the House ( www.jpfo.org/alert20070424.htm ). With the NRA’s assistance, the bill was modified and introduced for vote last Wednesday as HR 2640. The cowardly parasites in Congress chose to pass it via voice vote, ensuring that no one could be held responsible for their vote by their constituents.

Will there come a time when Americans stand up for their rights?

RANT: Ron Paul is making a splash

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

http://www.lewrockwell.com/ostrowski/ostrowski83.html

Ron Paul Revolution Halftime Report
by James Ostrowski

*** begin quote ***

In terms of his pursuit of the Republican nomination, it’s already halftime for the Ron Paul Revolution. He announced his campaign in January and by February the nomination will likely be decided. It’s true that most of the country is not paying any attention but that misses the point, as do polls showing Ron Paul with just a few points in the national polls. By the time most of the country starts paying attention, the contest for the nomination will be over.

*** end quote ***

It’s interesting how this fellow upsets the political calculation. He sails to the “left” of Hillary and to the “right” of the whole Republican field in the area of the non-internventional wing of the Republican party. He even trumps the fiscal conservatives by being “doctor no” and out liberals the Democrats liberals with his voting record.

If he can stay in for the second half, it should be interesting.

Bloomberg Leaves GOP
Now Unaffiliated, Will He Run For President?
Marcia Kramer
Reporting

*** begin quote ***

(CBS) NEW YORK Mayor Michael Bloomberg is leaving the Republican party and will remain unaffiliated with any political party, CBS 2 HD learned Tuesday night.

*** end quote ***

Sorry, but I see Hillary’s hand in this muppet.

Like Ross Perot, Bloomberg is at his heart a Democrat. A thirty year democrat, and big Democrat contributor! He became a Republican to thumb his nose a the party bosses. By entering, he can split the Republican vote. Who does that help? Madame Hillary.

So, I see the Clintons trying to repeat the winning strategy — get a rich democrat into the republican race.
