INSPIRATIONAL: Another group like the White Rose; where would today’s youths be?

The German Teens Who Rebelled Against Hitler

These adolescents, aged between 12 and 17, hang around late in the evening with musical instruments and young females. Since this riff raff is in large part outside the Hitler Youth and adopts a hostile attitude towards the organization, they represent a danger to other young people. – Nazi Party Report, Dusseldorf, Germany, July 1943

*** begin quote ***

The Pirates and the groups affiliated with them were labeled criminals by the courts of the era. In 2005, German officials officially relabeled them as resistance fighters and honored the surviving five members still in Cologne. The Edelweiss Pirates had fulfilled Hitler’s desire for German youths to be fearless and unwavering in the face of adversity. He just hadn’t anticipated it would be pointed in his direction.

*** end quote ***

I suspect retreating to their “safe spaces”.

We have lost so much of our “national character” by soft living. I think of what my paternal grandmother did and I doubt that I could do it. I’m sure that 99% of today’s youth surely couldn’t. She was married at 12 on the docks in Germany, traveled the Oregon trail to a better life, fighting off indians and outlaws along the way, bore 13 children—many of who didn’t survive, and had her young husband die in his late twenties leaving her penniless when she was pregnant with my father. That was a courageous woman.

I’m hard pressed to see that spirit anywhere around today.

The Hollywood, Sports, and Rap “stars” play at being a bad ass. They are just cheap imitations of the real American spirit.

Sadly.

INTERESTING: Why “we” might have become “risk adverse”?

The Innovation Paradox
By all appearances, we’re in a golden age of innovation. Every month sees new advances in artificial intelligence, gene therapy, robotics and software apps. Research and development as a share of gross domestic product is near an all-time high. But none of this has translated into meaningful advances in Americans’ standard of living. Our “Innovation Paradox” series explores the forces at play, from increased regulatory hurdles to greater risk-aversion. We examine why Silicon Valley giants often stumble in the world beyond software and how Big Pharma has had to re-engineer how it finds treatments. We also report that businesses and governments alike are turning the search for innovative ideas into prize-worthy puzzles. Beijing, meanwhile, is spending billions on moonshot projects. View the complete series and our interviews with pioneers in science, medicine and technology here.

*** end quote ***

IF “we” have become “risk adverse”, THEN I believe it’s due to Gooferment Skrules, the Gooferment, “Secular Progressives”, and the “Everyone gets a trophy” meme.

Why swing for the stars if your accused of hateful behavior? I read and hear stories of smart Americans, who happen to be black, and who achieve, are accused of “betraying their race”, “acting white”, or being an “oreo”. Nerds, other than on “The Big Bang Theory” #TBBT, are ridiculed.

On a personal note, as a Catholic school boy, the Good Nuns and Brothers always DEMANDED nothing less than our best. Sometimes with regrettable physical consequences. (I felt that was a way too much. Guess because I was “encouraged” to often for my tastes.

In my book, “CHURCH 10●19●62”, I wrote: “Catholic school taught them that it was their obligation, and could even be a mortal sin, if you didn’t use all your talents to the greater glory of God.” — “Chapter Fifty — Samaritans going to Jericho / Monday November 5, 1962 – Church Day + 17 (continues)” CHURCH 10●19●62 Volume 1 Page 296

So, that might why “we” might be a little tired and unimmaginative?

RANT: Fixing air travel

Friday, December 9, 2016

From WSJ 10 points 2016-Dec-08:

*** begin quote ***

Into Thin Air Stop focusing on legroom. It’s the headroom that is shrinking on flights, and making us feel really uncomfortable. Seat density has increased significantly the last couple of years. One passenger’s nose may be 3 inches closer to the back of the head in front of her. The skinny seats installed recently largely preserve knee and legroom, but in rows that are compressed, while installing skinny bathrooms and minimizing galleys have let airlines pack more rows in, too. Psychologists say the eye-level squeeze is a big reason travelers are feeling more anxious on densely packed planes. And it’s only going to get tighter in there.

** end quote ***

My answer to this and the TSA is to stop flying. (I did it three times in the last decade because “I had too”. Argh! And I didn’t like it.)

I more folks do it: (a) the airlines will change; and (b) the airlines being the Crony Capitalists they are, will change the Gooferment policies.

Come on folks vote with your wallet.

The ‘Fake News’ Con: A Case Study
By Jack Cashill

*** begin quote ***

Obama began using his 068 number in 1986, the year after he moved to Chicago. Did good neighbor Ayers lend him a Connecticut social security number? To me, this seems a more likely explanation than a typographical error. Lacking the resources to probe further, however, I can only speculate.

The Times has no such excuse. Its editors have the resources. They simply choose not to employ them. From Obama’s first days on the national scene, in fact, the Times has shown itself oddly incurious about his past, his very identity for that matter.

In late October 2007, for instance, the Times ran a telling article headlined, “Obama’s Account of New York Years Often Differs From What Others Say.” Given that he was a candidate for president, the Times expected Obama to welcome the chance to reconcile his account in his 1995 memoir, Dreams from My Father, with the accounts of those who knew him.

“Yet he declined repeated requests to talk about his New York years, release his Columbia transcript or identify even a single fellow student, co-worker, roommate or friend from those years,” reported the Times’ Janny Scott. For reasons unexplained, she and her editors chose to leave this particular hole in Obama’s life unfilled.

Maybe now we can get someone OTHER than Cahill to run down some of these “oddities”?

Surely, someone MUST be, if nothing else, curious!

GUNS: WE, THE PEOPLE are the FIRST RESPONDERS

7 Mass Shootings That Were Stopped By Lawful Gun Owners
Written by: Daniel Jennings  Current Events December 3, 2016

*** begin quote ***

3. An unidentified man saved the lives of several people inside the Farah Barber Shop in West Philadelphia, Pa., by shooting a 40-year-old gunman on March 22, 2015, police told NBC 10. Several people, including children, were inside the shop when the man took out a gun and opened fire. Fortunately, a passer-by pulled out his gun, ran into the shop and shot the gunman before he could kill anyone.

“The person who responded was a legal gun permit carrier,” Philadelphia Police Captain Frank Llewellyn told NBC 10. “He responded and I guess he saved a lot of people in there.”

*** end quote ***

“I guess” is pretty wishy washy. It would seem obvious that he did save a lot of lives.

*** begin quote ***

6. An armed likely prevented a shooting rampage at Bonnie’s Food and Spirits, a bar in Plymouth, Pa., in September 2012. William Allabaugh shot a man in the head after being asked to leave the establishment. Mark Kytor stopped Allabaugh by drawing his gun and shooting him. Kytor may have saved many lives because police found an extra clip of ammunition in Allabaugh’s pants, The Citizens Voice reported.

*** end quote ***

Typically inaccurate reporting. I would assume the shooter had an extra magazine, not a clip. I guess it’s too much to expect the news media to at least be a little familiar with the difference. “This is my rifle. This is my gun. This is for fighting.”

*** begin quote ***

So, yes, guns can save lives and armed citizens can prevent mass shootings.

*** end quote ***

When seconds count, the police are minutes away. WE, THE PEOPLE are the FIRST RESPONDERS.

MEDIA BIAS: Need to Cater to Male ‘Star Wars’ Fans

Lucasfilm President Says She Doesn’t Need to Cater to Male ‘Star Wars’ Fans
By Kyle Foley | 2:51 pm, December 1, 2016

*** begin quote ***

Ever wonder why Star Wars decided to make Mary Sue character Rey their main focus for The Force Awakens? Well, according to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy it’s because male Star Wars fans don’t need to be catered to anymore.

Kennedy was chosen to replace George Lucas, the creator of Lucasfilm and Star Wars, when Disney bought the studio in 2012. Since then she has done a fantastic job running the studio, to the tune of $2 billion in revenue from The Force Awakens and over $3 million in merchandise.

In an interview with the New York Times, Kennedy addressed her decision to cast a female lead in her second movie in charge, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. “I have a responsibility to the company that I work with. I don’t feel that I have a responsibility to cater in some way [to those particular fans],” she said. “I would never just seize on saying, ‘Well, this is a franchise that’s appealed primarily to men for many, many years, and therefore I owe men something.’”

*** end quote ***

So much for building a rapport with your Customers. I’d never be so rude to the folks who give you their “certificated of appreciation”.

So, for a similar reason that I don’t watch Jane Fonda movies, I won’t be seeing this one.

Hope she feels the loss of “Male” dollars at the box office.

FINANCIAL: The federal government’s student-loan debt-relief programs?

Friday, December 2, 2016
I fundamentally oppose any “debt relief” program on the grounds of “moral hazard”. In the future, loans will be taken out with the expectation of forgiveness.

As a little L libertarian, the Gooferment does not have any funds that weren’t forceable taken from Taxpayers. Hence there should NOT be any FEDERAL loan program in the first place.

Further, you can correlate the rising tuition and rising student debt with the increasing Federal student loan involvement.

READER RESPONSE
Responding to yesterday’s question on the federal government’s student-loan debt-relief programs, Bernard Levine of Oregon wrote: “Solve this whole costly mess with one simple reform. Require colleges to co-sign every loan to their own students. Then if a student defaults, the college is on the hook to pay. Which is only fair, since it was the college, not the student, that received the proceeds of the loan. And it was the college that promised, implicitly or explicitly, to make its students employable and prosperous.” Cole Aston of Missouri said: “Forgiving student debt is merely a short-term fix to a long-term problem. Tuition is sky-high because of federal-government backed student loans. Until we get rid of these government loan programs, universities will continue to inflate their tuition cost. We can’t be half-free market and half-socialist; we need to pick one or the other and stick to it.” And Slade Howell of North Carolina commented: “The federal government forgiving student debt is a wonderful idea. It is exciting to think that tax-paying, working Americans can have the opportunity to fund a social interlude for our youth… This may well go down in history as the most ingenious welfare system ever devised to procure votes.”
