We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which Wikipedia articles they love to waste time reading. Here are their recommendations…

1. Unit 731
Suggested by Lurker8.

Unit 731 was a unit of the Japanese Imperial Army that carried out brutal (and, in many cases, lethal) experimentation on human beings during World War II under the guise of chemical and biological research. For the majority of the time it was active, the unit acted under the command of General Shiro Ishii, and was responsible for the deaths of up to 250,000 people. The worst part? Instead of being put on trial for human experimentation, the people involved with the unit were granted immunity by the US government in exchange for the data they had gathered.

While I found the concept of a “Wikihole” fascinating, the first suggestion was shocking!

Once again the US Gooferment does the unthinkable and the unforgivable.

The blood of a ¼ million human beings is on that “data” and amnesty.

Argh!

Pretty scary stuff.

It’s not enhanced computerized graphics. But it is well acted and well written.

Scary stuff!

6 Months In Jail For Selling … Cookies?
Written by: Daniel Jennings  May 4, 2017

*** begin quote ***

A ruling from a judge may be needed to sell homemade baked goods in Wisconsin.

Three home bakers in the state are challenging a state law that can punish people who sell homemade cookies, brownies and other treats with up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Lafayette County Judge Duane Jorgensen will rule on May 31 if Wisconsin’s ban on the sale of homemade baked goods is unconstitutional, the Associated Press reported. The challenge to the home-baking ban was brought by the Institute for Justice.

I read this and just shook my head.

How dumb can the Gooferment be?

INTERESTING: Perdue goes online

FROM THE WSJ

Private Turned Public

Purdue University, a flagship public institution in Indiana, is jumping into online education by buying for-profit Kaplan University with the aim of creating a new, public online university. The highly unusual acquisition will extend Purdue’s reach to more working adults while building an additional revenue stream at a time when state funding is uncertain. Purdue President Mitch Daniels said the school wanted to stay true to its land-grant mission of educating as many people as possible, but he recognized it couldn’t build an online presence alone. The venture highlights the shifting higher-education market as public funding declines, tuitions rise and college students grow older, busier and more indebted. Purdue said it plans to acquire Kaplan University’s 32,000 students, 3,000 employees and 15 bricks-and-mortar campuses and learning centers from Graham Holdings, which will maintain Kaplan’s international, professional and test-prep businesses.

A few years ago, one sage fellow said that in the future there would only be 100 Colleges or Universities in the USA. Everything else would be online or dead.

Sounds like that’s going to be true.

Social Justice is Uncool
Sargon of Akkad

*** begin quote ***

How pompous. Have you ever seen a room full of millionaires applauding themselves because they think they are going to save the world with their <synonym for the act of procreation in real time> acting.

*** end quote ***

Absolutely spot on!

Sigh! Argh!

While he’s a little long and rough language, I can understand the frustration.

I wish there was a transcript because he hits a few gems!

Should the word ‘internet’ be spelled with– a small ‘i’ (internet) or a capital ‘I’ (Internet)…?Internet Exceptionalism or Not– internet (small ‘i’) vs. Internet (Capital ‘I’): To Capitalize or Not… Who Decides?

*** end quote ***

I just spell it “inet”. But then I spell “yesterday” as “yday”. Us fat old white guy injineers ain’t so good on spelling anyway.

Now when it comes to “intranet” (i.e., implying a bounded internet within an organization), unless it is air gapped with private address that are non-routable1, one must assume that they will “leak”. Hence, if you mean “intranet”, spell it out and footnote how you ensure it does NOT leak.

The private address segments (10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255, 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255) are commonly referred to as “non-routable” addresses.
