But the American Optometric Association wants it banned. They say “it poses significant health risks to consumers” because “it relies on new, self-administered tests” rather than “assessment by an eye care professional.”
Is this new eye test dangerous? Or is it a cheap and efficient eye care alternative?

Well, when first I heard of it, I thought about my last eye exam. It was done by an ophthalmologist; not an optometrist. He scanned my retina. Reminded me to stay on my RX for high blood pressure that he’d detected more than a decade ago. As well as, noting that my cataracts had not progressed any further.
So there is a fine point on this. Although I’m not sure what an “assessment by an eye care professional” would mean if that “professional” is an optometrist?
YMMV, I recommend seeing an ophthalmologist for your annual exam. It may cost more but it could save your sight and even your life.

While I am far from “rich”, having real estate in a “blue state”, I’m impacted by SALT.
i object to the entire concept of the “federal income tax”. The Dead Old White Guys must be rolling over when SCOTUS affirms the income tax and all the host of other confiscatory taxes that the central Gooferment levies on the people.
“We, The Sheeple” are just stupid cowards. The Revolution was fought over the King’s taxes which were a fraction of what we pay today. If the Blue States really had their acts togeter, they’d secede from the Union. If the Red States really had their acts togeter, they’d secede from the Union. There is NO reason to allow Washington to run our lives with one size fits all Gooferment policies.
Time has come for everyone to go their separate ways.

Now here’s a good question for a “Conspiracy Theory”. Apparently, there are four good alternatives for what happened. It’s seems to be a well proven “fact” that something did happen. But, since I have not touched the hull or have someone reputable touch it, I can’t know for certain.
The author makes a plausible motivation for why NATO might have done something, but that is not evidence. And, one can’t really expect any reliable dikw (i.e., data, information, knowledge, wisdom) from Russia on the topic.
The whole Ukrainian tale about sneaking cruise missiles in while the crew was distracted by drones seems less likely.
So we just have to wait and see what “leaks” out.

And, I’m sure I’ve mentioned that EVERYONE — regardless of age — needs a will, a durable complete function power of attorney, a medical power of attorney, as well as an advance directive. If an attorney says one size will fit all, get another attorney. If someone says “do it yourself online at http;//… …”, get your legal advice from someone with a valid law license in your state and who specializes in estate law. Don’t fall for the 99$ advertisements either. Doing it correctly will entail at least two visits to a lawyer and a few hundred dollars in legal fees.
P.S., the will should have “self-proving” affidavits. If it doesn’t, find another lawyer.
P.P.S., the lawyer as part of the fee should “vault” your original will for you and just give you copies. One of which is for your executor.
P.P.P.S., Do NOT put these papers in a safe deposit box in YOUR NAME. It’ll be sealed on your death. I paid for my executor to rent a save deposit box in her name and my stuff is in there. Easy cheap work around.
Remember all the famous people who died without paperwork and left a mess to get sorted out in the courts. Wills bring out the worst in nice people.

TECHNOLOGY: Banks should have a better security system on checks

Needless to say, they didn’t even conceive of such happening.
I suggested a few follow ups on what to do.
First and foremost, immediately file a police report.
He’d notified bank and changed accounts Updated on the credit reporting agencies (transunion, experian, equifax, etc).
Then, he’s going to notify all the places he hold accounts.
Argh!
I think IMHO the banks should have the ability for account holders to “pre post” the checks they write with the check number and amount. In effect, “write” it twice — once on paper and once on line. Then if the check gets altered, the bank will no to reject it. Seems simple enough to me and would be a great “value added service”. I’d think it would be real popular with business. After all the bank’s bill pay is almost that already.

Just separate “health insurance” from employment by making health insurance premiums deductible from the top line, just as it is for businesses, and level the playing field.

The Biden Administration understandably rolled back the transparency regulation very quietly. Biden’s Labor Department killed the rule without fanfare on December 30 — the day before the New Year’s Eve holiday, when most union members and the press enjoyed Christmas vacations.
President Biden proclaims himself “the most pro-union President leading the most pro-union administration in history.” He is actually leading the most pro-union boss administration in history. As UAW members can attest, those are not the same thing.

Confessions of a Miles Chaser
I used to be one of those Miles Chasers. I’d spend an hour looking for a way to earn miles so I could get the equivalent of $8 in miles. Somehow, it never registered that I was giving myself a job at $8/hr. The sadder thing is that the work didn’t really benefit anybody or build anything. It was as productive as doomscrolling through Facebook. Unfortunately, Miles Chasing is a hard habit to break because of the scarcity mentality that’s so common to fiat money: You can take the miles from my cold, dead hands.

I was once a “miles chaser”, but I never bought into the credit card offers and other ”extra miles” gimmicks.
I had a job at AT&T where I was doing database trying for a new footprint side roll out. I had to visit an absurd number of cities in — as I remember it — in 8 week window. The United plan had some number of miles and “segments” for a few week in Hawaii including free round trip first class tickets for two people. Getting miles was the “easy part”; segment were much harder. Reading the “rules”, a non-stop counted as one segment, but stops along the route counted as segments. Since I was allowed to chose my flights, I took the roll out schedule and figured out how to do the training and collect the required number of segments. Laugh! (Just tell me the rules and I’ll figure it out.) So I was doing two cities a week Monday / Tuesday in City #1 and then Thursday / Friday in City #2. So Sunday night I went Trenton to Pittsbugh to O’Hare then proceeding to City #1. On Wednesday I’d fly from City #1 to City #2; non-stop unless I needed more segments. And finally on Friday night, inbound to home from City #2 to O’Hare, Pittsburgh, and Trenton. Laugh! No problem. Then Frau Reinke and I went to Hawaii via LA and San Fran with side trips to Las Vegas and Reno.
Made it all worthwhile. Got a great appraisal for doing the training with a raise, bonus, and promotion. No much of a life for those 8 weeks but everything in life was a trade off. I even got kudos for “saving travel money” since the price of direct flights at the time was about triple my connectors.
It was a great “life hack” and I learned to always study the rules.

I never used or collected “miles” after that.

Because governments view airlines as a display of national prestige, there’s a tendency to bail them out of their troubles. The three major U.S. airlines (Delta, American and United) have gone through at least one bankruptcy in the last 20 years. The bankruptcy proceedings usually result in a merger or some new company that’s injected with government funds. Even airlines that might go bankrupt are bailed out by the government such as during the travel shutdowns of the pandemic. The result is that airlines are now zombie companies that repeatedly get revived through government intervention.
Zombie companies typically don’t do that well in the marketplace. It’s no coincidence that air travel times are slower now than in the ‘70s. Planes might be more fuel efficient, but they’re not really faster or more convenient. The way these zombies have survived, besides government intervention, is through the financialization of their miles programs.

One really has to see the link between bailouts and inefficient zombie companies.
Real competition between financially healthy airlines would make air travel faster, more convenient, as well as “cheaper”.
The DHS / TSA “airport security” is “security theater” at best and further allows zombie airlines to shift costs to the public at large.
