A Tribute to Sgt. Henry Gunther
Brian Maher
Posted November 11, 2022

*** begin quote ***

Recall the divisional chieftain who condemned 61 of his men to the grave that morning so that others might bathe — a certain William Mason Wright.

This human gem received promotion to Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff of the Army after war’s end.

He could claim the distinction, after all, of capturing the final American objective of the war.

A less gaudy distinction fell to a young man under this man’s command that morning of Nov. 11, 1918. We refer here to Sgt. Henry Gunther, aged 23 years, of our former city of Baltimore.

This poor fellow was the last allied fatality of that fateful morning — and of the Great War itself. His time of death:

10:59 a.m.

So anytime that a Gooferment politician or bureaucrat expresses concern for the troops, vets, KIA, WIA, or MIA, think of Sgt. Gunther and you’ll know what’s true.

Sadly, true.

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: How about the sneakiness of the Gooferment with our “money”

Friday, November 10, 2023

FROM NEXTDOOR

Ronald P. Society Hill • 2 Nov •

*** begin quote ***

The sneakiness of manufacturers!

One has to be so aware of how manufacturers dupe their customers.

We have been a big fan of Chock Full O’Nuts Coffee for many years. Always liked to wait for when the coffee went on sale for $1.99 per can. The new sale price at ShopRite reducing it from $5.69 a can is now $2.99. We put the coffee in a canister instead of using it out of the can. Suddenly the canister did not get filled. Apparently the amount of coffee that is now in the can is 10.3 ounces instead of 13 ounces! So now the sales price went up 50% and the quantity of coffee went down over 20%.

I have found that manufacturers slip in a new reduced package size when they put the item on sale and customers don’t pay attention to the quantity.

This is not unique to this company but seems to be practiced widely. It is always buyer beware.

*** end quote ***

Let’s not ignore the Gooferment’s role in all of this.

It has inflated the number of dollars in circulation by several trillion.

Don’t you think that has some role in all this?

See my blog rants about penny candy, nickel cigars, and dime comics!

Shrinkflation is the manufactures’ response to a dollar devaluation.

“Dollar stores” are proliferating because that’s what people can afford.

I can’t imagine shopping for food in a dollar store, but I think we are going to see more of this.  Not less.

Time to vote the clowns out and just resist.

I’m not a big fan of movies that don’t make me laugh.

However every once in a while, one comes along that I feel is a “must see”.

I’d make it required watching for every student in the world.

Overcoming obstacles. Exponentiated.

Hard to say enough good things about this movie.

On a personal note, I didn’t recognize Annette Benning until I went to write this post.

I’d put this in my “Rudy” file of “motivational” musts.

Unlike the trash that Hollywood usually produces, there was a tasteful nod to sexual abuse and lesbianism.  But didn’t detract from the message.  If anything, it focuses on the hidden obstacles that one would never know about.

Mega-Jolt: The Costs and Logistics of Plugging In EVs Are About to Become Supercharged
By John Murawski, RealClearInvestigations
October 24, 2023

*** begin quote ***

To curb greenhouse gas emissions, California, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, and other states have outlawed the sale of new gasoline cars starting in 2035, and similar EV mandates have been adopted by nearly 60 countries. The Biden administration is spending $7.5 billion on 500,000 EV charging ports as part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to boost EV sales targets to 50% of all new vehicle purchases by 2030.

I expect that used cars are going to become the new “cars” in 2035.

We’ll probably begin to look like Cuba where cars ended in the 1950’s when the USA embargoed Castro.

Pity to poor and the renters, who won’t have access to a home charger.  And, pity the poor homeowner who needs to retrofit their electrical service.  That’s assuming that the local utility can provide such service.

BTW where is all this power generation capacity going to magically appear from.

In case you forgot, the extra taxes on gas pay for the roads.

DNF that EVs are hard on tires.

A Texas farmer’s fight for justice could have major implications for property rights
By Jon Miltimore  — October 26, 2023 09:44 AM

*** begin quote ***

In the 1930s, Richie DeVillier’s grandfather purchased a farm in Winnie, a little town in eastern Texas named after a railroad contractor who prospered.

For nearly a century, the DeVillier family raised cattle and grew crops on the 900-acre property without incident — until the Texas Department of Transportation started a highway project that had serious implications for DeVillier’s land.

In the early 2000s, the state renovated Interstate 10, elevating and broadening the highway and erecting concrete barriers. The construction trapped the DeVillier property, turning his farm into a lake whenever the region experienced heavy rains, as it did in 2017 during Hurricane Harvey.

“The water started to rise on August 28,” DeVillier recalled . “Our home was completely flooded by August 29.”

When DeVillier says his “home,” he’s not talking about just his house. Video footage shows his entire farm submerged, with cows standing chest-deep in water; fields where the family once grew rice and olives can be seen totally flooded.

*** and ***

In November, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit punted on the matter, arguing that federal courts have no jurisdiction in takings cases against states. (A “taking” isn’t necessarily seizing the property; an action that substantially alters a property is legally defined as a taking in tort law.)

The court didn’t rule against DeVillier. It simply said that Congress never passed a law allowing Americans to sue states for taking their property, so the Fifth Amendment’s property protections do not apply to DeVillier or anyone else.

The court’s reasoning is strange. Not only does the Constitution explicitly state that no person shall be “deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law … [or] without just compensation,” but the high court weighed in on this issue as recently as 2019.

*** and ***

“If there is one basic principle in property law, it’s the Pottery Barn Rule: You break it, you buy it,” said Robert McNamara, an attorney for the Institute for Justice who is representing the family. “The Fifth Circuit’s decision in this case amounts to ‘you pay if you feel like it.’”

*** and ***

That the government, which was created to secure these rights, has become the single greatest transgressor of human rights is a sad irony, one that was not lost on the 19th-century economist Frederic Bastiat, who described it as a “perversion.”

Few know this better than Richie DeVillier, whom the state of Texas is trying to stiff after destroying his farm.

Fortunately, the Supreme Court has a chance to make amends. If it does, it will not just be a win for DeVillier. It will be a win for justice.

*** end quote ***

I like that summation  — the Pottery Barn Rule.  In this case, the Gooferment “robbed this family blind”!

Laughter Is Good Medicine
Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola
October 23, 2023

*** begin quote ***

Story at-a-glance

  •     Anthropological research suggests laughter and humor are genetically built-in, and that humor, historically, has functioned as “a social glue.” The critical laughter trigger for most people is not necessarily a joke or funny movie, but rather another person
  •     Laughter is contagious. The sound of laughter triggers regions in the premotor cortical region of your brain, which is involved in moving your facial muscles to correspond with sound
  •     While children laugh on average 300 times a day, adults laugh only 17 times a day on average. Suggestions for how to get more laughter in your life are included
  •     In one study, even after adjusting for confounding factors, the prevalence of heart diseases among those who rarely or never laughed was 21% higher, and the ratio of stroke 60% higher, than among those who laughed every day
  •     Benefits of laughter have been reported in geriatrics, critical and general patient care, rehabilitation, home care, hospice care, oncology, psychiatry, rheumatology, palliative care and terminal care

*** and ***

  • Observe young children and follow their lead — Find delight and amusement in the ordinary (for an example, see the laughing baby video above; the simple act of ripping paper is a source of seemingly endless delight)
  • Watch comedies, go to comedy clubs and read funny books
  • Spend more time with friends who make you laugh
  • Remind yourself to play and have more fun
  • Spend more time with optimistic, happy people
  • Avoid sources of distress, be it difficult relationships, horror movies or the daily news

*** end quote ***

I resolve to watch laughing babies at least once a day.

EVLYNN: An application caringbridge.org that helps communicte health information with a minimum of “fuss”

Wednesday, November 1, 2023

https://www.caringbridge.org/

Here’s something I used for years to keep family informed while minimizing the effort required.  Here’s how I explained CARINGBRIDGE to our families.

*** begin quote ***

Let me explain. I use CARING BRIDGE to keep my and wife’s family informed about her condition.

She hates to tell them: feeling she’s always got more bad news to relate, a litany of ailments that is just a never ending kvetch, and it makes her focus on the fact that she’s not going to get better. Ever. The docs are not optimistic about this long term. Everyone refuses to give us a five year estimate.

So, it is our unspoken secret that: I let them know, they pretend not to know, and she can tell them “happy stories” about how she’s feeling better. :-) She knows I do it, but pretends I don’t. Women are SO complicated.

I think you might find what I write “cavalier and sometimes upsetting”.  Especially since I write it for a select audience that know how “crotchety” I can be. (When I’m old, I’m going to make some nursing home aide’s life miserable.)

To a certain extent, I agree with Frau Reinke. The Universe does supply what you focus on.  So it is important for her to stay optimistic and positive. I can be the pragmatic realistic fat old white guy injineer!

As her PiA (I call it “patient advocate”; she calls it PIA.), I keep all the notes, do the RXes, and generally fuss over her like a mother hen. (I have a lot invested in training her.) Hope you find it helpful, amusing, and distracting from your own more serious load. We’re at the end of the story; your girl is at the beginning.

*** end quote ***

This was a handy “ruse” to prevent the repetition to every one who is concerned.  For those interested, they control their subscription to the news.  It can come in email or text.  Or you can visit the website and read it when your up to it.

Now I know you may or may not on the same path as her.  Eventually you’ll get it all sorted out.  Medicine is much better than it was for her in the 1980’s.

I have tried to convince others to do CARINGBRIDGE for their loved one, but no one seems to be interested.

You might want someone to do this for you to prevent the “repetition” from getting you down.

You may want to read what I did to get a feel for how to do it.  When my time comes, as it does for all of us, I’ll do my own site.  Laugh!  I am sure that there will be at least one reader  — me.

FWIW YMMV

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was produced by … Taylor Swift and her team. It was also distributed by … Taylor Swift and her team. Swift Inc. froze Hollywood out and went straight to the theater chains. The result has been a box office triumph. In its first weekend, The Eras Tour grossed $93 million domestic and $124 million worldwide. After only three days, Swift already had the highest-grossing concert film in history. Moreover, she enjoyed the second biggest October opening weekend ever. Only Joker (2019) topped her, and…

Hollywood had nothing to do with any of it.

Hollywood did not make one penny off of it.

And…

This so terrifies Hollywood that Hollywood’s palace guards at the far-left Hollywood Reporter spent 1,500 words last week spinning Swift’s box office triumph into a mistake. And what was the mistake? She didn’t distribute The Eras Tour through the same studios that advertise at the far-left Hollywood Reporter.

Hamas Massacres: The New Face of Gun Control
By Hank Vanderbeek

*** begin quote ***

Blizovsky told the Times he believes the atrocities committed by Hamas could have been avoided if more Israeli civilians had firearms.

Never ever give up your guns, because the minute you do you become a helpless victim. You never know when something like an inhumane attack on the homeland will happen. We have open borders through which illegal immigrants pour in from the entire world. We are not just talking about refugees from Central America and Mexico. Deranged Middle Easterners are entering unfettered. What are their plans? Entire terror cells could be walking across the borders.

Don’t believe someone who tells you to give up your guns to make society safe. The Second Amendment allows us to keep and bears arms to keep us safe, not to take our arms to keep us safe.

In the end, Stern said the Israeli government’s restriction on civilian firearms ownership cost hundreds of civilian lives. That grave injustice should never be forgotten.

Sorry, but the Gooferment is the “gang that can’t shoot straight” and can’t protect its citizens.  The police come after the fact and draw chalk lines around the dead victims.

“What the monsters you last interacted with did to you was cruel, inhumane, and heartless.”

The police are not your friends. They were there for an unrelated mater and, for whatever reason, decided to kill the deer.

Remember someone loaded the Jews on the trains to the death camps. The police don’t “protect and serve” us!

Argh!

Interesting that the deer was “rehabilitated” just like the “law” intended.  Probably send the carcass to the dump.

Who or what authorized Officer David Loza to kill the deer?

Argh!

POLITICAL: Universities should be silently neutral in all debates

It so happens that the University of Chicago adopted precisely the correct position all the way back in 1967, in what became known as the Kalven Report.

The answer: the university itself remains neutral, but the professors themselves are free to do and say as they like.

The university, the statement said, had “a great and unique role to play in fostering the development of social and political values in a society,” but that role is one “for the long term.” Day-to-day debates were not matters for solemn and official statements by the university per se.”

“There is no mechanism by which it can reach a collective position without inhibiting that full freedom of dissent on which it thrives. It cannot insist that all of its members favor a given view of social policy; if it takes collective action, therefore, it does so at the price of censuring any minority who do not agree with the view adopted.”

It is the professors themselves who are to carry out the debate. The university is “the home and sponsor of critics; it is not itself the critic.”

This, it seems to me, is the correct approach. No more writing to express your outrage that University X hasn’t yet issued a statement on Issue Y. Its opinion on Issue Y is moronic and worthless anyway. These “statements” by university presidents are better left unwritten. I promise you, dear reader, the world will be a better place without them.

Certainly seems like a good policy for ALL corporations too.
