Eleven Reforms to Extend America’s Energy Advantage
Oren Cass | 07/08/2015

*** begin quote ***

Now may seem an odd time to emphasize the importance of increasing U.S. oil and gas production. Domestic output has reached an all-time high, prices have plummeted, and drilling activity is slowing in response. Job cuts in the industry are approaching 100,000. Headlines announce that the boom has already gone bust.

Yet failing to press America’s current energy advantage would be an enormous mistake. Demand forecasts indicate that any oil and gas glut is temporary. Further, U.S. energy policy, still based on an assumption of resource scarcity, is ill equipped to manage the new abundance. Indeed, America’s private sector has driven an oil and gas revolution in the face of an ambivalent federal policy.

A new report released today presents 11 reforms to help craft a smarter U.S. energy policy. Reforms 1-5 would amplify the boom, by enacting regulatory reforms to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of U.S. energy markets. Reforms 6-11 would extend the boom, by opening federal land and waters to energy development to replicate the extraordinary growth of tight oil.

*** and ***

4. Streamline permitting for natural-gas and crude oil export terminals. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has specifically cited the “number of permits and reviews required by federal and state law” as a cause of delays. Designate these natural-gas and crude oil export terminals in the public interest, without a need for case-by-case review, and enact a single approval process with clear timelines.

5. Exempt new and expanded natural-gas plants, new and expanded refineries, and new drilling sites and export terminals from the Clean Air Act’s and Clean Water Act’s new-source requirement. These heightened standards discourage refineries from retooling or expanding to accommodate new volumes and types of crude, weakening America’s energy advantage. Instead, existing standards should be applied to new energy projects.

*** end quote ***

Like that is ever going to happen.

The Keystone pipeline was entangled in a permitting process that made no sense to me as a Business Process engineer. Unless it was designed to slow, confuse, and frustrate.

How many bureaucrats does it take to say “hell, no”.

Argh!

TINFOILHAT: Is there gold in Fort Knox?

Former US Mint Director Clueless On Gold In Fort Knox
The Curious Case Of Edmund C. Moy

*** begin quote ***

1.3. The Gold In Fort Knox Is Not Yearly Audited

Quote three, “So once a year the US Mint police coordinates with the Treasury Inspector General, and coordinates with the Mint chief financial officer, and they have to audit the gold. When you take a look at these bars, each one is numbered. They have to be taken out, counted, and assayed, to make sure they still have everything in it that they’re supposed to. When it’s all done they’re put back in in the same order as they have been taken out. So when you take a look at these vaults, again I can’t tell you how much is in there and how they’re organized, but there is a lot of bricks in there.”

This is simply not true. The official story from OIG is that 100 % of the gold stored at Fort Knox was audited in between 1974 and 1986, although there is no US government department that has the audit reports – for more information please read my post US Government Lost 7 Fort Knox Gold Audit Reports. To repeat myself, after the gold was audited by the Continuing Audit committee all compartments were placed under Official Joint Seal. Currently, the OIG is said to inspect the seals every year, that’s all they do. Apparently Moy has always been unaware of the audit procedures at the US Mint while he was the Director of this institution and presents himself as an expert. Did Moy have any sight or control over the Deep Storage gold when he was in office?

*** end quote ***

What is there? And, probably, more importantly, who has claims on it?

The essence of having a ‘tin foil hat’ is to ask simple questions for which there is no credible answer. A tin foil hat doesn’t need to have an answer; just the question.

Here’s a great story that takes Edmund C. Moy’s freely made statements and points out the inconsistencies.

Argh!

And, once again, no one in the Elite feels any need to answer any Mundane’s question.

Eventually, “the Truth” comes out, but by then the villains have escaped justice.

Wilson knew that the Lusitania was carrying war contraband but needed an excuse to enter WW1.

FDR knew that the Japanese were going to attack Pearl Harbor but need an excuse to hide his economic failures with the Great Depression and wanted to use WW2 to restart the economy.

Truman knew that the Japanese wanted to surrender but he wanted to use the nukes.

LBJ killed JFK to prevent his peace initiatives and all the warfare / welfare state power elite covered it up.

And, on and on, … …

So before you condemn all the tin foil hats, think a little about the questions that we pose.

AND, more importantly, the implications on your liberty.

Scared yet?

Tear Down That Monument!
A “Progressive” Case for Demolishing the Lincoln Memorial

By Thomas DiLorenzo
July 8, 2015

*** begin quote ***

The totalitarian socialists among us who try to disguise their true beliefs by calling themselves “progressives” are currently in the middle of one of their periodic fits of hyper-PC hysteria. Upon learning that the mentally deranged, drugged-up little monster who murdered all those people in a Charleston church had his picture taken with a Confederate flag, the “progressives” commenced a new crusade to obliterate not only the Confederate flag from American memory, but also the memory of anyone in history whose views on race are not identical to theirs. They have even called for the demolition of the Jefferson Memorial; and the July 4 Daily Caller included an article about a Portland, Oregon teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in that city who has started a campaign to rename the school. The Daily Caller refers to Wilson as “a model progressive Democrat,” which he was, but he was also a racist and a white supremacist.

However racist Woodrow Wilson, the old Princeton University political science professor, might have been, his public utterances on race were nothing compared to those of the real darling and “model” of “progressives” everywhere (and of neocons everywhere as well) – Abraham Lincoln. The following is a sampling of Lincoln’s racist and white supremacist beliefs (“CW” stands for Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, followed by the volume and page numbers):

*** end quote ***

This article confirms my bias that Lincoln was the worst President.

http://wp.me/Pg9z-2ak

On any basis, he was a “war criminal”.

He instructed his generals to make war on the civilians in the south.

No wonder there has been generations of hatred in the south.

In addition to all the other misrepresentations, the War of Northern Aggression was about taxation and tariffs.

Pure and simple.

But, I’m sure old Abe will never come off the FED’s five dollar bill. He made the FED possible with the income tax, debt, and warfare spending.

INTERESTING: Where DID the Lake Titicaca Peru totora reeds come from?

Review of : BEFORE COLUMBUS : The New History of Celtic, Egyptian, Phoenician, Viking, Black African And Asian Contacts and Impacts in the Americas Before 1492 By Dr. Samuel D. Marble
By Jim Leslie
Ancient America
July 8, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Soon after the Christian era started, China became the principal supplier of ceramics and pottery to the east coast of Africa. Marble asks that if these Chinese voyages were possible, why is it not plausible the same mercantile drive could also make crossing the Atlantic possible? Totora reed grows only in the fresh waters of the Nile and Lake Titicaca of Peru. Each is genetically identical to the other and it could not have found its way to the Andes unless carried by hand. Is this evidence of an African presence? Egyptians wearing birdlike hats with beaks wove the reeds to make boats for the Nile, and men wearing similar hats with beaks are shown in ancient artworks of Peru where reed boats were woven with the totora reeds in a pattern almost identical to that of ancient Egypt., Is this an accidental development by different peoples unknown to each other at about the same time and separated by half a world?

*** and ***

This book ranks at the top of the ‘Before Columbus’ entries for its breath of coverage of evidence known at that time. His literature research was extensive and all encompassing, yet he made it readable to the general audience.

I agree when Dr. Marble writes there is no sure way of knowing if the evidence in his book is actually what really happened. No evidence will convince everyone, for there is no way of knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt. It’s almost impossible for a defense attorney to prove the innocence of his client; the best he can do is to cast enough doubt in the minds of a few jurors so they will vote for innocence. Whether the client is guilty or innocent does not matter in the court of law.

Outside of mathematics there are no descriptions of events that work perfectly. Of course truth does exist somewhere in these vents, and Marble sites the newest tools available at the time – dendrochronology, blood type, C14, and ground penetration.

RANT: Attkisson on her FOIA on an epidemic

U.S. Govt. “Routinely Breaks Freedom of Info. Laws”
by sattkisson on July 3, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Federal bureaucrats paid tax dollars to act on our behalf routinely break the law with impunity, treating public material as if it’s confidential, secret information to be controlled by a chosen few. They withhold it from us, its rightful owners, while sharing it with select partners such as corporations or other so-called “stakeholders.”

In October, I filed a FOIA request when the CDC was not forthcoming about the epidemic of Enterovirus EV-D68 possibly linked to the deaths of 14 children and 115 paralyzed children.

In December, long past the supposed 20-day response time, I asked about the status. CDC answered incredibly that officials were just too busy with the Ebola crisis to fulfill my FOIA on EV-D68. Even now with the excuse of the Ebola crisis over, I still haven’t been given any EV-D68 information eight months after I asked.

The Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient!

And, sometimes downright dangerous.

Why should the CDC be any different?

Anyone who expects the Gooferment to protect you will be sadly mistaken.

How do we get it back?

Family Dogs Save Child From Backyard Bear
One canine sustains bite to face, leg after scaring off bruin in Long Valley, NJ.
By JASON KOESTENBLATT (Patch Staff)
July 2, 2015

*** begin quote ***

A pack of family dogs intervened when a bear began approaching a three-year-old in her own backyard Wednesday morning, with one canine sustaining injuries to the face and leg before scaring off the wild animal.

*** and ***

Wagner’s daughter was outside with one of the family dogs, a rescue pup named Chief, when the mom heard her child scream.

“I looked up and the bear was about 15 feet from her and walking right toward her,” she said. “The bear was between us. Chief heard her scream and immediately grabbed the bear’s back leg, at which point the bear turned and bit Chief’s face and leg.”

It was then the other three dogs, all Pit bulls and also rescues, ran to assist Chief while Wagner grabbed her daughter. The bear was chased off, back over the fence and ultimately up a tree in the woods.

*** and ***

After discussions with Washington Township’s Mayor Bill Roehrich, and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, Wagner learned it may take a while before the neighborhood bear is no longer climbing her fence.

“We’re not allowed to kill the bear – not that we want to – and if he injures a dog they give the bear the benefit of the doubt and say it’s in self-defense,” Wagner said. “They won’t trap and relocate the bear, but will shoot it with rubber bullets and then release it back into the area.”

In order for the bear to be taken away and euthanized, it must commit a “category one” offense, where it tries to enter a home or shows aggression like charging or attacking, and even then it’s only if the action is done toward humans, not pets.

*** end quote ***

Seriously, are you kidding me?

Mom needs a 380 and a rifle. Then, “shoot, shovel, and shut up.”

This country has gone INSANE. It’s a dangerous animal.

Sorry, but it’s not “nature”!!! It’s life and death.

MONEY: Unfunded and underfunded liabilities

The Coming Era of Pension Poverty
Assuming “growth” will fund all promised pensions and entitlements is magical thinking.

*** begin quote ***

Promises made in flush times cannot be kept in lean times. Common sense suggests that public employee pension benefits should be tied to the revenues required to pay them and the rate of low-risk returns on pension funds. If common-sense is “union bashing,” then we not only have a pension-funding problem, we have a propaganda problem.

Regardless of what was promised, what can’t be paid won’t be paid. The federal government can print money, but state and local governments cannot print money to pay soaring pension and healthcare costs. Push taxes and junk fees up enough and you will spark a taxpayer rebellion. If you doubt this, check out the origins of Prop 13 limits on property taxes in California.

*** end quote ***

Unfunded and underfunded liabilities about in the Zero Interest Rate Environment set up by the FED.

The estimates are staggering.

And yet the corruption continues. Politicians give Gooferment Unions big ‘benefits’ and Gooferment Unions give politicians big ‘campaign contributions’. And the taxpayer is on the hook.

Gold Shrugs Off Armageddon

By Barry Ritholtz

*** begin quote ***

This was the week Greece inched closest to chaos, as a bank holiday and a technical default caused markets around the world to erupt in turmoil. They recovered somewhat Tuesday, and futures looked stronger Wednesday morning, but on Monday, the NASDAQ Composite Index lost 2.4 percent, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index lost 2.09 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.95 percent. Volatility exploded, as the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index surged 35 percent, its biggest increase in two years, to 18.85.

*** and ***

Regardless, gold seems to going nowhere fast. Feel free to send me an e-mail explaining how wrong and stupid I am. I have an archive of all the messages warning me that gold would teach me a lesson in humility. “You’ll see” these e-mails smugly assure me, “your comeuppance will be here any day now.” My plan was to respond to each on its fifth-year anniversary with a chart showing the performance of gold versus all other asset classes and the details of how much money has been lost.

*** end quote ***

I’d never call anyone names.

And, I’m a gold bug. But most of my money is in the “casino”.

One has to think, that the Greeks stuffing euros under their mattress to avoid confiscation and the Swiss fund managers wanting to take physical possession of their Swiss francs to avoid negative interest rates, there is some merit in keeping small amounts of bullion coins at home as a hedge.

The “prepper” movement always says: “Store water, beans, bandaids, bullets, and bullion. Two is one; one is none.”

When you see the political corruption of Crony Capitalism, the large proportion of folks permanently on the dole, and the expansion of the welfare / warfare state, you must see that the balloon has to pop eventually.

Eventually, like the Little Red Hen in the children’s story, the makers will stop making and what do the takers take then?

I don’t know when the music will stop, but one best have a chair then.

And, I am POSITIVE that there is manipulation in the markets.

That being said, I’m content to average in to gold if they are selling it at a discount. As long as I take delivery.

Ya ain’t gonna Corzine me.

[TIP ‘o’ the HAT to: my Luddite old friend.]

“…if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.” -Churchill, The Second World War, vol. 1, The Gathering Storm (London: Cassell, 1948, 272, on the British guarantee to Poland in Spring 1939.

“America isn’t easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, ’cause it’s gonna put up a fight. It’s gonna say “You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can’t just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. GUNS: Support Constitutional Carry by Gun Owners of America on Independence Day

Saturday, July 4, 2015

2015-Jul-04

*** begin quote ***

Happy Independence Day!

“GOA [has] proven itself as a uniquely effective ‘no-compromise’ national leader in the gun rights advocacy community.” — David Codrea, formerly of The Examiner

Not a GOA member yet? You can join Gun Owners of America today for a mere $20!

Gun owners should take heart because freedom is advancing!

It has been a good year for freedom.

More state legislatures are passing GOA-backed laws, enabling citizens to carry firearms concealed WITHOUT permits — laws that are known as Constitutional Carry.

More states are enacting GOA-backed laws to veto federal restrictions within their borders. The Brady Campaign even lost a case against Kansas last month, when a judge threw out a lawsuit challenging the state’s pro-gun law (from 2013) imposing felony penalties on anyone enforcing gun control. to get more information on these polls.

Finally, more and more people are converting to the pro-gun position. Polls show that the number of people who favor gun rights — and oppose gun control — is dramatically increasing.

Sure, our rights don’t depend on what the majority thinks. But it’s nice when you have the bulk of the American people on your side! Click here to get more information on these polls.

Americans are increasingly pro-gun and are mobilizing

Your involvement with Gun Owners of America is helping make a difference. GOA is educating the public and is mobilizing the grassroots to put the heat on their elected legislators.

Just yesterday, our Facebook page hit one million “likes.” Our email activist list continues to grow dramatically.

Our numbers are increasing, and that means YOUR VOICE is getting louder and louder inside the halls of Congress.

Gun Owners of America wants to thank you for your activism, because we couldn’t do what we do without your support.

No wonder that National Public Radio was able to say, “Gun Owners of America showed with one email alert that it could help flood the phone lines on Capitol Hill days before the Senate vote.” (December 26, 2013)

GOA: Saturating the media

In addition to “flooding” the Congress with grassroots activism, Gun Owners of America is helping to shape the gun rights debate around the nation.

In the two weeks following the tragic shooting in South Carolina, GOA representatives appeared in almost 1,000 different media outlets to defend 2nd Amendment rights. At some points, we were literally communicating with the American people around the clock.

Some of the more notable appearances can be listened to or viewed here:

(1) GOA Director of Communications Erich Pratt goes “mano a mano” with a British TV anchor over the subject of self-defense and gun rights.

(2) Inside the country, GOA representatives appear on CNN and an ABC NewsTalk stations to reject calls for gun control and to demonstrate how law-abiding citizens can (and have) stopped mass shootings.

(3) On both radio and in print, GOA Executive Director Larry Pratt discusses the Pope’s response to the Charleston shooting when he declared that gun makers (and by inference, gun owners) can’t be Christians.

There are a lot more media appearances that we have posted, and you can catch up with these on the GOA website, YouTube and Facebook pages.

GOA: Big wins for gun owners at the Supreme Court

Finally, Gun Owners of America is defending our gun rights in the courts. And this includes lawsuits challenging California’s waiting period and restrictive concealed carry requirements.

Not only that, while the Supreme Court’s major decision from last Friday has dominated the news, there have been several cases before the high Court that have advanced gun owners’ rights.

Gun Owners of America has been involved in all of these cases, and we are happy to report that we have enjoyed a stream of victories and are steadily reclaiming lost ground in the courts. Click here to get more information on these GOA victories at the Supreme Court.

Again, none of this is possible without you.

We know that the media is frequently dominated by “bad news.” But as you commemorate Independence Day this weekend, realize that there are a lot of good things happening that we can celebrate, as well.

Nuetered British Fear Terrorists May Attack With Smuggled Guns
Posted by Bob Owens on June 29, 2015 at 5:21 pm

*** begin quote ***

The British people long ago gave up their natural right to own firearms, and are now fearful that they may stand nearly defenseless against homegrown Muslim terrorists armed with obsolete Cold War-era submachine gun:

Fears of a Tunisian style attack on the streets of Britain have been raised after it emerged that criminal gangs have been smuggling powerful submachine guns into the country.

Security chiefs are concerned that the weapons, capable of firing 1,000 rounds a minute, could fall into the hands of would be jihadists.

A report from the National Crime Agency (NCA) published last week into serious and organised crime in the UK, found evidence of an “increased threat” of Czech made Skorpion submachine guns being imported into the UK by street gangs in London and the south east.

The fear is that these weapons could then find their way into the hands of extremists, intent on carrying out a terror attack.

There isn’t apparently any direct evidence that any terror cells have acquired Skorpions, but more a general fear that if they do acquire some of the weapons criminal gangs are sneaking into the country, that a Mumbai-style attack is possible. In that 2008 attack in similarly disarmed India, ten Islamic terrorists slaughtered at least 164 and wounded hundreds more over the course of a four-day assault.

You are, of course, correct to note that the meanings of words and phrases are often ambiguous and, thus, require interpretation.  And reasonable people can and do frequently disagree about the best interpretations of ambiguous words or phrases in their specific contexts.  Recognition of this reality, however, is no license for a court to give to words and phrases meanings that those words and phrases plainly do not have.

*** and ***

This controversial interpretation of the statute is then challenged in court.  If Chief Justice Richard Epstein accepts – as he surely would – the administration’s claim that a minimum hourly wage of $7.25 harms many of the workers who Congress insists it meant to help, why should he and other like-minded members of the SCOTUS not use the logic of King v. Burwell to uphold the Paul administration’s reasonable argument that, to make the Fair Labor Standards Act work as Congress intended, “$7.25” must be read as meaning “$0.01”?  I certainly now can see no good reason for any such “wooden” and “unrealistic” restraint on the part of the Court.

Sincerely,

POLITICAL: Reaction to SCOTUS on same sex “marriage”

Monday, June 29, 2015

http://survivalblog.com/letter-re-a-dark-day-for-america-by-hjl/

Dear Survival Blog,

Thank you for such a great service as Survival Blog. I am writing to comment on the above captioned article the Blog posted on June 27, 2015.

The problem we have is 501c3 tax exempt status, that is, a tax exempt certification issued by the IRS to the Church in exchange for surrendering certain freedoms. The freedoms surrendered are listed in IRS Publication 1828 on page five. This publication is freely available to anyone with an Internet connection. Everyone should read it and understand it for themselves. The publication title is “Rules for Churches.” Rule five on page five states that the Church cannot “violate fundamental public policy”. After yesterday’s Supreme Court decision, do I need to point out whether homosexual marriage is now a “fundamental public policy” of the United States? Do I need to spell out what the future holds for all “government registered” churches?

So why have very nearly ALL churches in America registered with the IRS (see IRS Pub 78) and surrendered their freedom to preach the Gospel? I can tell you why. It’s to get that last little bit of tax exemption, that last little bit of money, namely the ability of the attendees to deduct their church contributions. That’s it. We gave it ALL away for a little bit more money. The Church itself was never taxed, and can never be taxed so long as the First Amendment of the Constitution still stands.

Let me state it this way; if the Church at large was not registered and therefore beholden to the government, would we be having a vigorous debate in this nation about God’s laws regarding sexual deviancy and the utter corruption of the family through government mandates? I think we would because the Church would be FREE to do so, and in keeping with its duty under the Great Commission, it would do so vigorously. Instead, we have the Supreme Court and politicians for gods.

Okay. So how to fix it? UNREGISTER. Throw off the chains, stand up in freedom, and speak the truth to power. It would cost us though. Standing with the Maker of all things always does.

We need to face this. This is us. We did this, or at least allowed it. We need to get ourselves free again and then fight this evil from a position of strength, not beholden to any government except God’s.

That’s my piece. Thanks for providing your email address, and keep up the good work of the Survival Blog. – D.F.

#####

This is an interesting reaction.

But will the “churches” give up the tax advantage? Will their “parishioners” put their money where their mouths are?

Or will everyone cave to “inertia” and the “cant’ fight city hall” mentality.

Personally, as a little l libertarian, I find Gooferment “licenses” for anything appalling. The fact that you have to seek permission from any group to exercise your fundamental rights is abhorrent.

So how will “We, The Sheeple” react?

What’s on the latest reality show? How is “my” sports collective doing? Is there a shortage of beer and pizza?

THey won’t see the problem sadly until they are being loaded on the trains!

RANT: Texas Gooferment Skrules jump to the leftist tune

TEXAS SCHOOLS JUMP ON BANDWAGON TO DUMP HISTORIC CONFEDERATE TIES

Texas public schools are jumping on the bandwagon to shun symbols and dump historical figures that memorialize the Confederate South in a politicized push around the state that follows the tragic hate crime shooting of nine African-American church parishioners during a Bible study in Charleston, SC.

RANT: Misdirection from Tyranny to Triviality

The Real Reason for the Anti-Confederate Flag Hysteria
By Thomas DiLorenzo
June 27, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Every couple of years the totalitarian socialist Left in America (a.k.a., the Democratic Party and all of its appendages) pretends to be indignant about the existence of the Confederate flag somewhere. The lapdog cultural Marxist media fall in line, treating the siting of the flag in the same way they would treat the siting of an Ebola victim in a large crowd. Americans are reminded once again by the New York/New England/Ivy League-educated presstitute class that they should hate Southerners and all things Southern. As Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart recently whined in faux horror, Southerners “waged war against the United States” government! Waaaaaaaaah!

The anti-Confederate flag hysteria is only one small part of the Left’s general strategy, however. It is part of their overriding strategy of diverting the public’s attention away from all the grotesque failures of leftist interventionism, from the welfare state to the government takeover of education to the war on drugs and beyond. The neocons who run the Republican Party are usually complicit in all of this.

*** end quote ***

When this whole flag flap started, I immediately suspected “misdirection”. Like a magician or a scammer, they seek to divert attention from what they don’t want you to notice to something trivial.

In this case, I suspected the R’s fast tracking the TTP “trade deal”. Another secret — pass it to know what’s in it — deal!

Argh!

Yes, they seek to distract from the huge Gooferment failures, but in this case I suspect it was the TPP and the perfidy of the R’s.

RANT: That Berkeley balcony

Friday, June 26, 2015

http://www.irishcentral.com/news/Rotten-to-the-core-Berkeley-balcony-covered-in-dry-rot-say-report.html?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_term=The%20Best%20of%20IrishCentral&utm_campaign=Best%20of%20IC%20%2F%20Merged%20-%20June%2024

Rotten to the core: Berkeley balcony covered in dry rot says report
Cathy Hayes @irishcentral June 24,2015 01:45 AM

*** begin quote ***

Officials from the City of Berkeley, near San Francisco, have confirmed that the eight wooden beams supporting the fourth-story balcony that collapsed killing six students were massively compromised due to dry rot.

The report, compiled by City of Berkeley engineers, stated, “The deck joist ends protruding from the exterior wall appeared to be severely dry rotted.”

*** and ***

The preliminary ten-page report found that the balcony, in the Library Gardens complex on Kittredge Street, completed in 2007, should have been able to support up to two tonnes. Last Tuesday morning the balcony collapsed under the weight of the Irish and Irish American students and dropped 40 feet to the sidewalk.

A full report on the balcony’s condition will be completed over the coming months.

*** end quote ***

As a fat old white guy injineer, I’m always interested in “engineering failures”. Sounds like everyone was doing everything correctly. Eight years for a wood deck doesn’t sound unreasonable.

BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), this deck appears to have a different design than the others.

That strikes me as unusual.

Now I am sure that the politicians and bureaucrats will huff and puff, but adding more controls, licensing, and permits aka taxes are locking the barn after the horse.

Seems like the engineering and construction “fraternity” have to “solve” this.

People have a great propensity to use stuff beyond its design life and abuse the heck out of stuff in ways never planned for by the designers. (Hence a small deck designed to hold 2 tons!)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiot_proof

*** begin quote ***

Several Murphy’s law adages claim that idiot proof systems cannot be made.

“Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool”

and

“If you make something idiot proof, someone will just make a better idiot.”

Along those lines, Douglas Adams wrote in Mostly Harmless, “a common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.”

So maybe there is nothing more to say about this sad event, other than “stuff happens”.

VETERANS: Monsanto’s Agent Orange; the truth finally

US Government Finally Admits Agent Orange Poisoned Troops
http://www.thedailysheeple.com/us-government-finally-admits-agent-orange-poisoned-troops_062015

*** begin quote ***

Decades after the Vietnam War, the Department of Veterans Affairs acknowledged this week that Monsanto’s Agent Orange—a dangerous herbicide sprayed over 4.5 million acres across Vietnam during the  conflict—is responsible for health ailments in a group of as many as 2,100 veterans. It had previously denied such allegations.

The United States government will pay out $45 million in disability benefits over ten years to compensate Air Force reservists and active-duty forces who were exposed to Agent Orange left over from the Vietnam War. The exposure came from residue on Fairchild C-123 aircraft, which were used to spray millions of gallons of the chemical, and, evidently, affected soldiers in the United States who later handled the planes from 1969-1986. According to ABC, the VA’s decision to compensate the 2,100 veterans follows a January Institute of Medicine study that found “some C-123 reservists stationed in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts had been exposed to Agent Orange residues in the planes and suffered higher risks of health problems as a result.”

Further, “the VA said it subsequently determined that pilots, mechanics and medical personnel who served at seven other locations in the U.S. and abroad also were potentially affected – Florida, Virginia, and Arizona, as well as Taiwan, Panama, South Korea and the Philippines.”

*** end quote ***

The Gooferment only eventually will admit the truth.

POLITICAL: VAT – the end of Rand Paul’s candidacy for me

EXPOSED Rand Paul’s Call for a Value Added Tax (In addition to a Flat Personal Income Tax)

*** begin quote ***

Much focus has been put on Rand Paul’s call yesterday for a 14.5% flat personal income tax. The reporting often stops there, As in: The tax would be 14.5% across the board flat personal income tax, down from as much as 40%, but there is much more to the story,

In addition, to the flat personal income tax, Rand, in his WSJ op-ed that revealed his plan, also called for a value added tax on top of the flat personal tax.

*** end quote ***

That’s the end of Rand Paul’s candidacy for me.

Remember the income tax was originally supposed to replace all tariffs.

And for FOUR years there were no tariffs.

Then BANG! Tariffs were reimposed.

No new taxes. No shell games to give “District of Corruption” more spending money.

FBI Agent: The CIA Could Have Stopped 9/11
BY JEFF STEIN 6/19/15 AT 6:07 AM

*** begin quote ***

Updated | Mark Rossini, a former FBI special agent at the center of an enduring mystery related to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, says he is “appalled” by the newly declassified statements by former CIA Director George Tenet defending the spy agency’s efforts to detect and stop the plot.

Rossini, who was assigned to the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center (CTC) at the time of the attacks, has long maintained that the U.S. government has covered up secret relations between the spy agency and Saudi individuals who may have abetted the plot. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers who flew commercial airliners into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a failed effort to crash into the U.S. Capitol, were Saudis.

*** and ***

Over 30 pages relating to Saudi Arabia in the report were blacked out. The Obama administration has also refused to declassify 28 pages dealing with Saudi connections to the hijackers in a joint congressional probe of the attacks.

As has been previously reported, Rossini and another FBI agent assigned to the CTC, Doug Miller, learned in January 2000 that one of the future hijackers, an Al-Qaeda operative by the name of Khalid al-Mihdhar, had a multi-entry visa to enter the U.S. By mid-summer of 2001, the CIA was repeatedly warning President George W. Bush and other White House officials that an Al-Qaeda attack was imminent. But when Miller and Rossini attempted to warn FBI headquarters that al-Mihdhar could be loose in the U.S., a CIA supervisor ordered them to remain silent.

Rossini says he is “deeply concerned” by how the agency continues to suppress information related to contacts between the CIA and Saudi Arabia, particularly when the spy agency is declassifying other portions of documents to show that it did everything possible to thwart the September 11, 2001 plot.

“There would have not been a 9/11 if Doug’s CIR [Central Intelligence Report] on al-Mihdhar was sent,” he told Newsweek in an email. “Period. End of story.

*** end quote ***

And so the story continues to dribble out. A leak here, a fact there, and retirement loosens tongues!

Why can’t “We, The Sheeple” know “the truth”?

Who’s covering what up and why?

Argh!

Where’s WIKILEAK on those 28 pages?

“Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.” Colonel Jessep in A Few Good Men played by Jack Nicholson

I think we ARE entitled to the truth.
