INSPIRATIONAL: Nikolai Vavilov was.a pioneer that was killed for his efforts

The Botanist Who Defied Stalin

  • His dream of feeding the world died in prison. His dream of a seed bank lives on.

By Lee Alan Dugatkin April 21, 2021

*** begin quote ***

Vavilov, and those who starved at the VIR, could only have dreamed of the technology required to build and maintain a seed vault inside a mountain that sits in the permafrost of Spitsbergen, a remote Norwegian island 1,300 kilometers north of the Arctic circle. But the Svalbard Global Seed Vault is the futuristic version of what Vavilov had begun in 1921. Dubbed the Doomsday Vault, with a proclaimed mission to serve as “a global seed vault to serve as a backup storage facility … to store duplicates (backups) of seed samples from the world’s crop collections,” it opened in 2008, as a repository that would ultimately contain all the world’s crop plant genetic diversity. That vault is capable of storing 4.5 million different varieties of plants within its temperature controlled, -18 degrees Celsius facilities: With an average of 500 seeds per sample, that’s 2.5 billion seeds. Precisely the sort of place that Vavilov had dreamed of.

As of today, 1,074,537 samples from around the globe sit in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Among those samples are 60 boxes from depositor 1739365, the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Plant Industry. In those boxes lay samples from 148 species and 41 genera of domesticated plants collected from 109 countries. Many are the descendants of the seeds Vavilov himself collected.

*** end quote ***

Reading this article, one can only wonder what could have been if he was in a “capitalist” country like at the time England or the USA was.  Hard to imagine what he went thru to collect samples.  Humanity may not know his name, but his genetic “children” live on forever.

So sad to read all these dedicated people dying of basically starvation and political persecution.

Next time someone extolls Communism or Socialism, they should be directed to read this.

“Capitalism” may be “bad” and have “flaws”, but Communism, and Socialism aka Communism “lite”, are horrendously worse.

“The greatest fallacy of democracy is that everyone’s opinion is worth the same.” — Robert A. Heinlein

“Capitalism is a moral system because it offers individual freedom. You choose what you want. You choose your money and where you want it to go. You can be yourself. Socialism is groupthink. Step outside the group straightjacket and freedom ends.” —Stuart Varney

“The answer certainly isn’t socialism. Middle-class voters currently presume that elites already control the government—so why would they want to give the bureaucracy any more power?” — RAHM EMANUEL was the 44th mayor of Chicago

“We all too often have socialism for the rich and rugged free market capitalism for the poor.” — Martin Luther King Jr

This man was an outstanding example of courage and determinatiom.  We should all be like him even in the smallest ways possible.

HEALTH: If pigs and rats will not touch it and it can’t rot … … why should humans?

What pigs and rats taught me about human snack food

  • You are what you eat….

John Klar

As an experiment, I left a rejected pink Snoball on the floor in one of the pigs’ stalls. I would shovel up their manure and bedding daily, but leave the half-round pink dainty to tempt them on the concrete floor. But they wouldn’t bite. (I recall one brave, presumably very hungry pig taking a nibble, no more.)

With all that grain, bread, hay, and sweets stockpiled, we attracted a small population of rats that I would sic my border collies on when we startled them on barn entry. The rats would creep into the pigs’ stalls to scavenge for their leftovers. But they wouldn’t touch that pink Snoball.

Nor would the flies. I left the thing out for weeks, and nothing would eat it. Over time, it remained preserved, as though it had been prehistorically sealed in amber, though it was in the open air. It wouldn’t rot – even the mold and bacteria eschewed the rubbery marshmallow lure.

*** end quote ***

I have a suggestion for RFKjr and the CDC / FDA (aka Big Pharma advocates).  Let’s create a new simple test for foods, additives, and chemicals.  I call it the “Pig, Rat, and Mold” test.

(Remember the Big Mac that was untouched by age?)

A panel of pigs, rats, and molds will be introduced to a proposed food.  If they won’t eat it, or it unfortunately kills, them, then it’s stamped “Unfit For Consumption” and treated like an industrial poison.

No expensive study required.

If BigAg is convinced the pigs are wrong, then they can fund the studies to prove that. Laugh!  I can see the ads now: “9 out of 10 pigs agree, this is inedible.  Be unique and be a early adopter!”

Argh!

SECURITY: OpenTable isn’t just for customers — it shares ALL your data from ALL venues

Your online reservations are telling restaurants all about you

  • OpenTable is sharing your dining habits, both good and bad.

by Dominic Preston

*** begin quote ***

Your Online Reservations Are Telling Restaurants All About You [theverge.com]

If you make reservations through OpenTable, restaurants may be getting more information about you than you realize. Because OpenTable isn’t just for customers…it’s “billed to restaurants as a one-stop shop” that can integrate with restaurants’ payment and order management systems. When you make a new reservation, OpenTable gathers information “based on the orders you’ve made and money you’ve spent at other restaurants in the past” and shows it to restaurants using AI-assisted tags. According to an OpenTable representative, “what [they] share with restaurants is guided by the choices you’ve made in your privacy preferences,” but The Verge found the platform’s privacy policy “actually a little opaque on this.”

Want to opt out of this data sharing? “You can do so by logging into your account, heading to your profile, and then going to the ‘Preferences’ page. You’ll find six options related to the privacy policy, but the one that matters most is the last one: ‘Allow OpenTable to use Point of Sale information.’ Untick that, and your order history should be your own again.”

*** end quote ***

Surprise, surprise.  And, you thought OpenTable was wearing a “white hat”!  Argh!

I remember a Law & Order episode where a Mafia informant was killed when a special cake was delivered to a fancy restaurant in lower Manhattan.  (The Shearson data center was near by and I was familiar with it and the area.). So is OpenTable a security risk.  Maybe is your looking over your shoulder for a hitman, process server, or a jealous ex-lover.

More common reason would be that your treatment at a restaurant may be related to your spending habits (i.e., big spender gets special treatment; poor tipper gets spit in their food).  YMMV!

And like most tracking done by your phone, it may subject you to unexpected intrusions.

Consult the Electronic Freedom Foundation for more horror stories.

New Hampshire cold case is solved half a century after flawed FBI report allowed killer to escape

Despite Gable being identified as a suspect, he could not be properly accused because “the case was severely hindered by a flawed forensic report issued by the FBI in 1975,” Formella said.

“At the time, microscopic hair analysis techniques led to an incorrect conclusion that the suspect could not have contributed the hairs found at the scene,” the report found.

Other evidence contradicted the analysis results, with Gable’s fingerprints being found at the scene and witnesses revealing that Lord had feared him.

During their investigation, detectives discovered Lord had been afraid of both her husband and Gable for some time because of his “persistent and unwanted advances.”

“Judith told her sister she was afraid of both her husband and her African American neighbor next door, indicating Mr. Gable, because he ‘had made remarks to her about wanting to see her nude,’” the attorney general’s report found.

HEALTH: A Missing Link Between Concussion and Alzheimer’s?

A Missing Link Between Concussion and Alzheimer’s
Viruses may play a surprising part
By Katharine Gammon January 27, 2025

*** begin quote ***

Itzhaki says in the future she wants to look into how to interrupt the damaging processes that unfold following traumatic brain injuries, such as those suffered in soccer, boxing, and football. She is aiming to test antivirals and other medications to reduce the inflammation caused by viruses that could be reactivated after a brain injury.

Though they are far from a perfect proxy, brain organoids will help her and others to continue this work.

*** end quote ***

This is interesting to me in that Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that robs people of memories and condemns them to an expensive end of life disaster.

Even football’s NFL, the NFPL, and individual players are recognizing the risk of the “sport”.

Boxing should be restricted because we’ve seen the effect.  Muhammed Ali is the poster child for the damage.  There has to be a more civilized way to have this sport made safer.

Hopefully there will be a cure before too many more are lost.

POLITICAL: Election suck and “special elections” are a boondoggle

Special Election To Replace Mikie Sherrill Set: Here’s What Happens Next

  • New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has set an election date to replace Mikie Sherrill in Congress.

Eric Kiefer, Patch Staff

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has set an election date to replace Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill in Congress.

On Friday, Murphy issued a writ of election to fill a vacancy in the U.S. House of Representatives for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. A special primary election will take place on Feb. 5. A special general election will be held on April 16.

*** end quote ***

Boy, do I HATE elections.

Not only because a minority of those eligible to vote bother —  AND I understand why!  As a “red” voter in a “blue” state, my voting is hopeless —  and with all the fraud and “non-citizens” voting, it is a foregone conclusion who will “win”!

So until we have voter id requirements, we are never going to have an honest election!  AT ANY LEVEL!!!

“If voting made any difference they wouldn’t let us do it.” — Emma Goldman ― often incorrectly attributed to American humorist Mark Twain ― but very very true imho!

“Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other.” – Oscar Ameringer

“It’s not the people who vote that count, it’s the people who count the votes.” — attributed to Joseph Stalin

“As long as I count the Votes, what are you going to do about it. say?” — attributed to William M. “Boss” Tweed in Thomas Nast cartoon, 7 October 1871).

Now onto “Special Elections” and “Ranked Choice Voting”.

Special elections, like here in the Pepuls Republik of Nu Jerzee this year, occurred when a sitting Congress critter was elected Governor.  This could easily be avoided if there was a rule that a sitting legislator is ineligible to run for another office.  And, for death or disability, then let the State’s legislature pick someone (from the phone book, voter rolls, someone who voted, or the unemployment office) to fill out the term.  BINGO!  No need for “special elections”.

Ranked Choice Voting, aka Instant Runoff, is necessary to prevent “spoilers” in the current scheme of “First Across The Finish Line” (aka, winner take all).  In this case, voters would rank their candidates in preferential order.  Then, in tabulation, if no one has a majority, then the lowest ranking candidate is discarded and the votes are recalculated. Voters for that lowest ranking candidate, who expressed a preference, would have their votes added to their preferred candidate. Voters for that lowest ranking candidate, who did NOT express a preference, would have their votes discarded. The recalculation would continue until a candidate has a majority or only one candidate was left; a plurality!

Seems simple enough to enact and add in some “life sentences” for cheaters and we COULD have honest elections.  Note: if we arrest low level cheaters, then, with plea bargains, we can, just like with drug dealers, work our way up the chain of corruption.

Sigh!  Fat chance in hell!

Of course, I’d prefer if voting was restricted to taxpayers, or veterans.

“A veteran is someone who at one point in his life wrote a blank check made payable to the ‘United States of America’ for an amount of ‘up to and including my life.'” -Anonymous

Remember Heinlein’s Starship Troopers’ universe? One does not merely have the right to be a citizen and vote by virtue of what Heinlein called the mere accident of birth; rather, one has to earn this right through Federal Service that tested one’s ability and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good of the polity. Bet not a lot of vets would vote for all the undeclared wars the USA has been in since WW2?

Bitcoin mining hardware exec falls for sophisticated crypto scam to tune of $200k
Joel Khalili – Nov 18, 2025 1:37 PM

*** begin quote ***

As Kent Halliburton stood in a bathroom at the Rosewood Hotel in central Amsterdam, thousands of miles from home, running his fingers through an envelope filled with 10,000 euros in crisp banknotes, he started to wonder what he had gotten himself into.

Halliburton is the cofounder and CEO of Sazmining, a company that operates bitcoin mining hardware on behalf of clients—a model known as “mining-as-a-service.” Halliburton is based in Peru, but Sazmining runs mining hardware out of third-party data centers across Norway, Paraguay, Ethiopia, and the United States.

As Halliburton tells it, he had flown to Amsterdam the previous day, August 5, to meet Even and Maxim, two representatives of a wealthy Monaco-based family. The family office had offered to purchase hundreds of bitcoin mining rigs from Sazmining—around $4 million worth—which the company would install at a facility currently under construction in Ethiopia. Before finalizing the deal, the family office had asked to meet Halliburton in person.

*** end quote ***

Sorry, but NO ONE gets cash filled envelopes in an honest transaction.

That should have been the first clue to a scam.

Then to “prove a capability or a holding” of bitcoin transfer some to a strange wallet?

Just reading the story, my ex-CISO “spydee senses” were on high alert.

And inputing a key “seed phrase” into an unknown software wallet you just downloaded was just the height of stupidity.

Sorry to pile on and beat a “dead horse”, but the warning signs were there.

Who knew if “wealthy Monaco-based family office” was even a real entity.  Or if they even knew what was going on in their name.

PEACE: The UN is unable to prevent the very wars, hate, injustice, and instability it was created to alleviated to prevent

The UN Must Go!
By Moshe Phillips

*** begin quote ***

The world’s democracies, which provide the lion’s share of the UN’s funding — especially the United States — find themselves routinely outvoted by blocs of authoritarian regimes that use their membership not to promote peace or justice, but to shield each other from accountability. The result is an institution that rewards the corrupt, legitimizes the violent, and sidelines the nations that actually uphold the values the UN was meant to defend. And it is American taxpayers who foot the largest share of the bill for this failure. Each year, billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars flow into UN programs and peacekeeping missions that produce little peace and even less accountability.

*** and ***

It is time to admit what has long been obvious: the United Nations is no longer the solution. It is part of the problem. And the UN, like the League before it, belongs in the dustbin of history.

*** end quote ***

And the US can’t afford the luxury of it any more.  As with most Gooferment creations, it too is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy.

Atrocities by UN “peacekeepers”, the WHO that has been captured by liberals and Big Pharma, Ukrainian corruption with US bio labs, the inability to stop or even condemn genocides, the rampant expansion of NATO to threaten Russia, and on and on and on.

“When in a hole, stop digging!” — old Wall Street maxim

It might be a small irritant, but the behavior in NYC of UN “diplomats” denotes an attitude of entitlement as opposed to serious people as guest in another nation.

While clearly “might makes right” with respect to who is seated in the UN, like China versus Taiwan, we don’t have to provide “free parking” for tyrants, dictators, and criminals just because they seize power.

It’s time for the USA to call a halt to the “kabuki theater” that the UN has become and stop paying for its abuses.

The world would be better off if there was no “United Nations” to interfere with peace.

UK Government Wins 2-Year Battle to Withhold Data Linking COVID Vaccines to Excess Deaths

  • Under a ruling last week by the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK Health Security Agency is not required to publicly release data that could link COVID-19 vaccines to excess deaths. The ruling, which ended a two-year battle over the data, has led to accusations of a “cover-up,” according to The Telegraph, which first reported the story.

APPLE: “Family” security doesn’t work

Thursday, November 27, 2025

RECENTLY, my problems with “DOWNTIME” for  youth account have resumed.

It started with:

  • A real child id account with picture
  • A “ghost” child id account without picture
  • An adult id that was duplicated.

Turned on, the child’s account limits and those limits were applied to my iPhone.

Argh!

— more coming —

In attempting to “fix” the problem(s):

  • Had to wipe the iPhone to get rid of the “account limits”.
  • The restore from iCloud backup never would complete and after three tries just wiped the iphone
  • Restarting basically from a blank slate, WALLET didn’t restore or recover my passport or credit cars. Argh!
  • Also, all the apps had to be reinstalled with lost “history”
  • Every setting seemed to need a reset. Argh!

The Primary-Residence Scam: Here’s Why James, Schiff, Cook, and Swalwell’s Mortgage Fraud Cannot Be Tolerated
by Joel Gilbert Nov. 17, 2025 8:00 am

*** begin quote ***

Allowing lies about occupancy hides this elevated risk.

How about down payments? Primary residences may require as little as 3-5% down, while second properties are often 20-25% higher.

When someone misrepresents a second home or investment property as their primary residence, they distort the lender’s assessment of risk.

The bank thinks they are issuing a safer loan than they actually are. In reality, they are being exposed to the elevated risks associated with investment properties including higher vacancy rates, greater likelihood of strategic default, and more volatile cash flows.

If this deception is tolerated, the pricing model for mortgages collapses. The lender cannot correctly measure risk, and without accurate risk assessments, the cost of lending rises for everyone.

Make no mistake, primary-residence fraud is theft. Lying about primary residence constitutes mortgage fraud, a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 1014. Penalties may include federal felony charges, up to 30 years in prison, fines up to $1 million, and civil liability, including treble damages.

*** end quote ***

Sorry, but I feel little sympathy for politicians and bureaucrats who commit mortgage fraud.  As someone, who has had multiple homes and multiple mortgages, I ALWAYS played by the rules.  And, suffered bigger down payments, higher interest rates, and more expensive insurance rates.  I think the legal distinction between: domicile, primary residence, other residences, multiple homes, and “vacation” homes as arbitrary and confusing.  (I also object to paying property taxes on a home where I can not vote how money is spent, but I can sure pay those taxes from which money is spent.)

The politicians and bureaucrats, who are always in the top tier of wealth, should be held to a standard like Caesar’s wife.  And, when they fall afoul of the laws they created, they should be judged and punished harshly.

Equality under the law for everyone; not just us “little people”!

That goes for insider trading too!

Maybe MEMEs are the best way to communicate with “We, The Sheeple”?

It’s hard to get them to focus.

We have concrete examples —  North and South Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, London, Paris, and … …

… … the best of all Poland and Hungary.

So sad that th USA experiment in self-governance lasted for 250 years only to fall to the corrupt “two UNI-party system” that the Dead Old White Guys tried to prevent.

I’m a fat old white guy injineer and I focus on solutions; not idle bitching.

Here’s my formula to claw out of this hole:

  • Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment (Direct election of Senators) and return it to the various State Legislatures.
  • Repeal the Sixteenth Amendment (Income tax) and fund the the Federal Gooferment with a population based assessment on the individual States.
  • Repeal all laws the Federal Gooferment has as they pertain to individual citizens.
  • Return the “immigration function” to the individual States.
  • Enact Buffet’s 3% solution on the House of Representatives (3% deficit makes all sitting member of the House ineligible for reelection).
  • Transition back to a gold back currency.  Transition to End The Fed!
  • Size limits on all “corporations” (No more too big to fail —  too big to fail is too big to exist).
  •  All corporate compensation that exceeds the President’s salary must be in the form of corporate bonds laddered over 25 years (No executive rape and pillage companies into insolvency).

I think that’s a good start to returning to the Dead Old White Guys’ vision of the Federal Republic.

The magic of the world’s rarest blood type
Jasmin Fox-Skelly
<>

*** begin quote ***

Only one in every six million people have the Rh null blood type. Now researchers are trying to grow it in the laboratory in the hope it could save lives.

Blood transfusions have transformed modern medicine. If we are ever unlucky enough to be injured or need serious surgery, blood that has been donated by others can be life-saving.

But not everyone is able to benefit from this remarkable procedure. People with rare blood types struggle to find donated blood that will match their own.

One of the rarest – the Rh null blood type – is found in just 50 known people in the world. Should they ever be in an accident that needs a transfusion, their chances of getting one are slim. Those with Rh null are instead encouraged to freeze their own blood for long-term storage.

Thanks to the USAF, “APOS” might as well be tattooed on my fore head. Laugh!

Seriously, due to my now sainted wife’s terminal illness, I have donated a lot of blood and platelets.

In ingineering skrule, Brother Austin Barry would always give us time off from lab work to donate blood. His rationale was that we were too dumb to do anything useful in the lab and he would not have to worry that we were killing our selves of others in the lab. (He accidentally electrocuted himself in the lab one year, but it didn’t shock him back to sanity.)

The tin foil hat brigade has (imho rightly) pointed out that the RNA covid “vaccine” (that revised the definition of vaccine) has many side effects. They urge the unvaxed to store their own blood and the rest of us should insist on unvaxed blood for transfusions. (IMHO if I need a transfusion, I think the RNA fragments are the least of my worries!)

*** begin quote ***

First, there are currently 47 known blood groups and 366 different antigens, as of October 2024. That means that a person receiving an O negative donation could still have an immune reaction to any of the other antigens present – although some antigens provoke more of an immune response than others.

*** end quote ***

Learning that there are so many blood groups and antigens has alerted me to inquire what my loved one’s blood characteristics are. The article warns that you may not find out that you are one of the “unlucky winners” of an “immune response”. It would seem that everyone should get this information!

This story has a very happy ending. It appears that several groups of companies and scientists are hot on the quest for a universal donor “golden” Rh null blood type artificial blood. That would obviate the need for blood which always seems to be in short or near short supply.

Until that day comes, I urge everyone to donate. I’m too old now and they don’t want “old” blood, but I would if I could. Argh!

RANT: Border Czar Tom Homan Delivers a Perfect Response

WATCH: Border Czar Tom Homan Delivers a Perfect Response After Catholic Bishops Blast Trump Admin for Carrying Out Mass Deportations of Illegal Aliens
by Cullen Linebarger Nov. 15, 2025 7:30 am

*** begin quote ***

As The New York Times reported, the United States’ Conference of Bishops sharply rebuked the Trump Administration over its mass deportation policy of illegals during the bishops’ annual conference in Baltimore.

In a statement, the bishops slammed the Trump Administration for creating “a climate of fear,” vilifying illegals, and not granting lawbreakers access to pastoral care.

*** end quote ***

Funny, I don’t remember them criticizing the Biden Administration for “cages”, or human trafficking.  Or, when Obama deported people.

Perhaps, because there was a financial incentive to the Catholic Church to “resettle” immigrants, their opinion was swayed?

Tom Homan reacts to Catholic Bishops on immigration: “I’m saying it not only as the Border Czar, I’ll say it as a Catholic, I think they need to spend time fixing the Catholic Church.”

Yup, spot on!

VOCABULARY: Mandela effect — A shared false memory.

Despite all that, the emoji never existed. This is the Mandela effect. A shared false memory. The term came from researcher Fiona Broome, who clearly remembered Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s — only to realize Mandela became president and died in 2013. She could even recall the funeral coverage. When she found many others with the same false memory, the term “Mandela effect” was born.

*** end quote ***

I wonder how much of “history” is nothing more than a “shared false memory”.  And, if written “history” is a false memory, then what is oral “history” passed down through generations?

So it sounds like that JoHari window quadrant IV (i.e., what we both can’t see) is suddenly HUGE!

Now with “AI”, whatever that is, with its “hallucinations” and fake video creations, make even more “evidence” unreliable. The legal system has proven that “eyewitness” testimony is very fallible.  And, even forensic “evidence” has to be suspect.

What can we “know” or “believe”?

Why does the Mandela Effect happen?

Arlin Cuncic, a psychologist and author based in Canada, said the Mandela Effect is ‘unreliable and not infallible’.

She points to a memory error called confabulation – where the brain fills in gaps that are missing in your memories to make more sense of them.

Another factor is the information we subsequently learn can change our memory of the original event.

‘This includes event subtle information and helps to explain why eyewitness testimony can be unreliable,’ she said in a piece for Verywell Mind.

Also, the role of the internet in ‘influencing the memories of the masses should not be underestimated’.

‘It’s probably no coincidence that consideration of the Mandela effect has grown in this digital age,’ Cuncic said.

Another theory for the basis for the Mandela effect relates to the idea that rather than one timeline of events, alternate realities or universes may be taking place and mixing with our timeline.

This far-fetched idea continues to gain traction among online Mandela effect communities but is closer to the realm of science fiction.

What FDR Did to Our Money
By: Jacob Hornberger|Published on: Nov 12, 2025

*** begin quote ***

For more than 125 years, the United States had a gold-coin, silver-coin monetary system. No, it was not a paper-money system backed by gold, as so many mainstream commentators have been taught to believe. It was a system in which gold coins and silver coins were the official money of the American people.

Penny candy, Nickel cigars, Dime store comics, and Quarter a gallon gas!

Hopefully, this action by the mint will drive home to “We, The Sheeple” that they have been robbed of their birthright.

Prior to FDR, one could stack gold coins and save for your old age secure in the knowledge that your wealth could nit be silently stolen by the Gooferment via “inflation”.

The Dead Old White Guys knew what we have apparently forgotten as a society.  Having lived thru an era of “not worth a Continental damn”, they knew that papa money was the Devil’s spawn.

I’ve posted many blog posts about “pony candy” and well-remember life was better when money was “honest”.

Perhaps, ₿itcoin will replace the “Federal Reserve Note”?

Save your nickels because they are the next to disappear.

Argh!

POLITICAL: Separation of Gooferment from Aviation

Wednesday, November 19, 2025

FROM 1440 http://join1440.com/

*** begin quote ***

House Shutdown Vote

The House reconvenes today and is expected to vote on a Senate bill to reopen the government. The vote comes on the 43rd day of the US’ longest shutdown.

Seven Democrats and one independent joined 52 Republicans to pass the Senate bill, which would fund much of the government through January. The Agriculture Department—which facilitates SNAP food benefits to 42 million Americans—would be funded through September 2026. The bill does not extend COVID-era healthcare subsidies for 24 million people who purchase plans under the Affordable Care Act. Democratic leaders had sought to make reopening the government conditional on extending those subsidies, due to expire Dec. 31. ACA marketplace premiums are projected to rise up to 30%, from 18%, without an extension. Federal health subsidies cost an estimated $1.8T in 2023, roughly 7% of the US gross domestic product.

Separately, airlines canceled an estimated 6% of flights at 40 of the US’ busiest airports yesterday amid ongoing air traffic controller shortages.

*** end quote ***

Why is the Gooferment regulating and operating “Aviation”?

It should ONLY be regulating as necessary. Clearly a consortium of commercial airlines could do a better job and cheaper. Surely a private entity would not be running on 1950’s hardware and software. Additionally, the Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy. So, there would be efficiencies and cost reductions.

This goes for Air Traffic Control and Airports.

Now there would have to be some role for “private aviation” and “military aviation” in this consortium. But those details can be worked out between the parties involved.

Airports would be just like any other corporate establishment regulated by the state or local Gooferment.

I can see a much better future once we #privatizetheFAA!

RANT:20K mile Colorado pickup truck would need rear brakes

Find it hard to believe that a few year old 20K mile Colorado pickup truck would need rear brakes. Sounds like a manufacture’s defect or a bad design?

Certainly no reflection upon the dealership.

At least the coffee was “free”.

Argh! Argh! Sigh!

HEALTH: The Quiet Rise of a Pharmaceutical Star — at what risk?

Gabapentin Nation: Almost All Aches And Irritations Now Get This Off-Label Pill
2025 Nov 11 at 10:31
by Bill Heid
in Pain-Free Living Off The Grid

*** begin quote ***

The Quiet Rise of a Pharmaceutical Star

It didn’t start out this way. Back in the ’90s, gabapentin was just another seizure med. Then came the sales push. The company behind it sent reps and doctors to fancy dinners and “educational retreats,” where talk quietly turned to off-label uses—headaches, mood swings, ADHD, you name it. Eventually, that little scheme cost them almost half a billion in fines. You’d think that would’ve ended the story.

But then the opioid crisis hit. When OxyContin started wrecking lives and headlines screamed addiction and death, doctors needed something—anything—that wouldn’t destroy their patients or careers.

Gabapentin looked like a safe harbor: cheap, not technically addictive, and tolerated well enough. So, when the pain didn’t fit a neat category, gabapentin became the fallback.

*** end quote ***

Seems like an over prescribed med.  Wonder when we’ll see the ads “if you were hurt by Gabapentin, call 1-800-gab-pent to join our class action suit”.  Of course, like all “class actions”, only the lawyers get rich.

And, like thalidomide, when do the bad effects become visible?

Married to a chronic pain after amputation sufferer, she report that it’s “not very effective and only dulls the pain for an hour”.  If so, why bother?

Wonder when we will see the studies about ill-effects and Big Pharma abuses?
