Utah Unveils ‘Search And Rescue Card’
Buy an annual subscription that covers the costs of non-medical rescue services. It’s like AAA with helicopters.

*** begin quote ***

The Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation announced the Utah Search and Rescue Assistance (USARA) card last week. With it, outdoor enthusiasts are exempt from non-medical costs associated with emergency rescue services, should the need arise.

The purpose of the subscription service is to protect both victims of unexpected worst-case scenarios, and the state and counties in which they occur. Both residents and tourists can purchase the card for single- or five-year coverage to defer fees for helicopter transport and emergency crews.

Meanwhile, proceeds from the USARA card will fund training for search-and-rescue (SAR) volunteers and maintenance costs for emergency vehicles and equipment.

*** end quote ***

Never made sense to me that the Taxpayer has to rescue the unprepared and inept “outdoorsmen”!

Sorry, but if you go in harm’s way, then you should be prepared to pay for the consequences.

If you can’t afford that, then you shouldn’t be “out there”.

On June 13th, 1936, this hero named August Landmesser was working at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in in Hamburg, Germany. When you read his story, you’ll never forget him.

In the 1930s, the fascist mania for Hitler’s regime instituted a law making the infamous “sieg heil” hail victory salute mandatory for Germans.
One German named August Landmesser, seen here in this powerful photo, refused to obey. His incredible story is one of great courage, sacrifice, and horrific loss in the name of love.

INOVATION: Voluntary “taxation” of the “wealthy”

Voluntary taxation: a lesson from the Ancient Greeks

*** begin quote ***

The word liturgy – from the ancient Greek leitourgia – means ‘public service’ or ‘work of the people’. The idea of benefaction was embedded in the ancient Greek psyche, and had roots in mythology.

*** and ***

The beauty of the liturgy system was that public works tended to be funded and managed by people with relevant expertise, rather than by some less accountable state official. The benefit was that both personal wealth and personal expertise were shared through the community, without bureaucratic or government involvement. The job tended to be done well because the liturgist’s reputation was on the line.

In this age of the super-rich, perhaps it’s time to revive liturgy. It worked for the ancient Athenians, and perhaps it could work for us.

*** end quote ***

What a fantastic idea?

Everyone always says that “taxation is the price of civilization”. Obviously, that’s wrong.

Us little L libertarians always say “taxation is theft”. Obviously, that’s correct.

Here’s the ancient Greeks teaching us how it CAN be done.

Can you imagine a US grazillionaire building a bridge with his reputation on it?

Similarly, the progeny in a rich family would be expected to do something other than post on Facebook their  bragging.

Imagine!

RANT: The “opined addiction” suit is about a Gooferment cash grab; not about the victims

Thursday, June 8, 2017

FROM BEHIND THE WSJ PAYWALL

*** begin quote ***

Barry Rose of Nebraska said: “Painkillers are a necessary evil, and the doctors who prescribe them are well aware of their addictive nature. The doctor is responsible to warn their patient, to make sure the opioid isn’t abused and to carefully monitor their patient. If the states were really interested in opioid abuse, they would go back to the doctors and pharmacies that dispensed them, but they aren’t. The pharmaceutical companies are a better target, deep pockets for the cash-starved states to plunder. It’s always about the money. When I see the states paying out that money to victims, then I will think differently.”

*** end quote ***

The Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy.

Here’s a classic example. Sue the Big Drug Companies rather than legalize ALL drugs.

The first tactic puts more money the Gooferment coffers to spend while the second removes it while it “solves” the problem.

Close the excess prisons, courts, and probation and release the excess people to the free market. Transfer the money spent on “punishment” to “rehab”.

VETERANS: Does anyone remember the Sixth of June?

Ronald Reagan - On the 40th Anniversary of D-Day

*** begin quote ***

The men of Normandy had faith that what they were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humanity, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this beachhead or on the next. It was the deep knowledge — and pray God we have not lost it — that there is a profound, moral difference between the use of force for liberation and the use of force for conquest. You were here to liberate, not to conquer, and so you and those others did not doubt your cause. And you were right not to doubt.

You all knew that some things are worth dying for. One’s country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it’s the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man. All of you loved liberty. All of you were willing to fight tyranny, and you knew the people of your countries were behind you.

*** end quote ***

Sigh, like so many of the battles / “victories” of WW2, the first casualty of war maybe truth, but the second is surely the veterans.

As a pro-peace little L libertarian, I want to ensure that all these fine youngsters — girls and boys; never old politicians and bureaucrats — are not “wasted” in “chicken hawk” psuedo-wars where the objectives are unknown, the interests are confused, and the rationale is either based on “spin” aka lies or abject falsehoods.

We can trace the causes of WW2 directly to FDR and back to Wilson. Americans meddling in European affairs ended a long tradition of “Minding Our Own Business”. Wilson signed for the Federal Reserve that ensure the Gooferment would never lack for “money”. The American empire was set in motion by Teddy Roosevelt who encouraged an imperialistic Japan. And, all manner of “big Gooferment” was traceable to Lincoln and the War of Northern Aggression.

So here we sit on our “D-Day”, wondering how do we get out of this mess?

Will we have the courage of the “boys of Point Du Hoc” and confront the villains in the “District of Corruption” and say “no more”!

Let’s bring all the girls, boys, women, and men home now! We have so many politicians and bureaucrats to send in their place if it’s really needed!

That’s the way to honor the dead and maimed of Normandy!

VOCABULARY: “Clean Shares” in Mutual Funds

Monday, June 5, 2017

WSJ Wealth Adviser Briefing: Clean Shares
By Brian Hershberg
May 30, 2017 5:30 am ET

*** begin quote ***

With the fiduciary rule set to take effect June 9, WSJ Wealth Adviser’s Daisy Maxey took a look at a new type of mutual-fund share that stands to gain traction.

These “clean shares” charge only the fee to manage and operate a mutual fund, and don’t include payments to distributors, such as the broker-dealers and retirement-plan platforms that sell the funds. Stripped from clean shares are fees to compensate brokers for providing advice and 12b-1 fees, which pay for marketing, printing and prospectuses and other shareholder services.

As it is today, investors who buy class A shares of a mutual fund through a broker, for example, typically pay a sales charge that may range from 2.25% to 5.75%, according to Morningstar Inc. It’s easy for investors to overlook that payment to the broker because it’s bundled in with cost of the fund’s management, and the fund company passes it onto the distributor.

With clean shares, investors will likely pay 60% to 70% less to buy a fund, says Paul Ellenbogen, head of global regulatory solutions at Morningstar. If they want a broker’s advice, however, they would have to pay for that separately

Seems like a great idea.

It provides evidence of how documents stolen from a prominent journalist and critic of Russia was tampered with and then “leaked” to achieve specific propaganda aims. We name this technique “tainted leaks.” The report illustrates how the twin strategies of phishing and tainted leaks are sometimes used in combination to infiltrate civil society targets, and to seed mistrust and disinformation. It also illustrates how domestic considerations, specifically concerns about regime security, can motivate espionage operations, particularly those targeting civil society.

On June 1st, 1942, seven months after the extermination of prisoners began, the Warsaw underground newspaper, the Liberty Brigade, made the public announcement of the gassing of tens of thousands of Jews at Chelmno, a Nazi-operated death camp in Poland. Suit against Hillary Clinton over Benghazi deaths and emails is dismissed
By JOSH GERSTEIN 05/26/2017 10:58 PM EDT

*** begin quote ***

A federal judge in Washington has dismissed a lawsuit alleging that Hillary Clinton’s lax security surrounding her emails led to the deaths of two of the Americans killed in the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

In a ruling Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson tossed out the wrongful death claims as well as allegations that Clinton essentially slandered the parents of the deceased by contradicting accounts the parents gave of events related to their children’s deaths.

The suit was filed last August by Patricia Smith, the mother of State Department information officer Sean Smith, and Charles Woods, the father of CIA operative Tyrone Woods.

*** and ***

In the days following the September 11, 2012 assault in Benghazi, Clinton and other administration officials linked the attack to protests in various places in the Muslim world over an anti-Islam movie trailer released on the internet. However, U.S. intelligence officials ultimately concluded that the assault using mortars and other weapons was not a spontaneous outpouring of anger but an organized attack.

The current economic realities affecting our quality of life will continue to force local representatives to take action while Congress faces gridlock. Without establishing alternative options for communities across the country, our entire standard of living may fall fully into the hands of the establishment politicians in Washington DC — more so than it already has.

There is a subtle ongoing realization that no matter what the pundits and politicians claim, there is no easy way out of this mess. The public’s confidence in central banking is clearly eroding, and hopefully, it will be enough to allow a new kind of financial freedom that hasn’t been seen in the United States’ economic system for over 100 years.

The ‘lucky ones’
Fifty years after Vietnam’s bloodiest battles, veterans gather for what could be a final reunion
Story by Michael E. Ruane Published on April 29, 2017

*** begin quote ***

1st Lt. Victor David Westphall III , 28, of Albuquerque, killed May 22, 1968, at An Dinh in a battle that claimed 25 Marines, 12 from his company. After his death his parents and brother built a memorial to him in rural Angel Fire, N.M., among the earliest such tributes to the fallen veterans of Vietnam.

*** end quote ***

Read the list of the young men in the sidebar of this story.

Then, tell me how you stand on “war”. Any war!

And, when you get all done, tell the “chicken hawk” politicians and bureaucrats to get us out of the Middle East and turn the Pentagon into a true “Department of Defense”.

I was lucky. I was state-side for my “term of enlistment”. Of my two best friends at Manhattan Prep, one went and came back different and one evaded dying in highway wreck. The saddest part is that I never saw my “evader” buddy and he died a few miles from where I was stationed.

Makes me sad. But I’d never criticize the folks who went or the folks who evaded. I WILL criticize all the phonies — “chicken hawks”, politicians and bureaucrats who will send youngster to die for their vanity, the Military Industrial Complex for profiting on those bodies, and the ersatz astroturf “anti-war” crowd that comes out only when there is an R in the White House. A plague on all your houses.

I reiterate the concept, that I heard best stated by video / podcaster Jason Stapleton https://jasonstapleton.com, “I’m not anti-war; I’m pro-peace”. He describes what war should be and it’s ugly. A lot of people will die. I agree that we should be “pro-peace” up until: our children’s lives or ours are at risk, our liberties are threatened, or there is NO other path to take. Then, if you’re at “war”, then be at “war”. Not this “shadow war” that “We, The Sheeple” don’t care about, want to pay for, and most certainly don’t want to fight in.

“Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.” Colonel Jessep in A Few Good Men played by Jack Nicholson

So too, if you’re so all hot and bothered to go to war, as Jason Stapleton say, “go buy a ticket, grab a gun, and go” and then you can urge — not force — other to go to. Be very lonely out there when you have to stand up and fight for what you believe in. Much easier to have the Gooferment send other people’s children to die in your stead. All so you can be “patriotic” and “though on defense”?

About the worst epithet that I can label someone with is “chicken hawk”.

Argh!

Hillary Clinton Is Furious. And Resigned. And Funny. And Worried.
The surreal post-election life of the woman who would have been president.
By Rebecca Traister

*** begin quote ***

When I walk into the Chappaqua dining room in which Hillary Clinton is spending her days working on her new book, I am greeted by a vision from the past. Wearing no makeup and giant Coke-bottle glasses, dressed in a gray mock-turtleneck and black zip sweatshirt, Hillary looks less Clinton and more Rodham than I have ever seen her outside of college photographs. It’s the glasses, probably, that work to make her face look rounder, or maybe just the bareness of her skin. She looks not like the woman who’s familiar from television, from newspapers, from America of the past 25 years, but like the 69-year-old version of the young woman who came to the national stage with a wackadoodle Wellesley commencement speech in 1969. With no more races to run and no more voters to woo with fancy hair, Clinton appears now as she might have if she’d aged in nature and not in the crucible of American politics. Still, this is not Hillary of the woods. She is reemerging, giving speeches and interviews. It’s clear that she is making an active choice to remain a public figure.

State Dept. Redacts Big Chunks of $22.8 Mil Contract to Resettle Muslim Refugees
MAY 23, 2017

*** begin quote ***

This has become a heated issue for the government which may explain why other agencies aren’t as forthcoming in providing specific figures, thus abusing the (b)(4) exemption. The State Department, for instance, redacted huge portions of records involving contracts with VOLAGs to resettle refugees from mostly Muslim countries. The files illustrate the disparate redaction treatment given by different government agencies to the same types of records. The State Department paid a VOLAG called United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) a ghastly  $22,838,173 in one year to resettle refugees that came mostly from Muslim countries. Unlike HHS, the agency redacted information related to what the USCCB charged the government for things like furniture, personnel, equipment and other costs associated with contracts to resettle refugees. Why did one government agency hand over the same types of records that another agency claims are trade secrets? Judicial Watch is challenging the State Department’s (b)(4) exemption and will provide updates as they become available.

Terror at the Concert

At least 22 people, including children, were killed and 59 wounded by a suicide bomber at a concert hall in Manchester, England, on Monday night. Just after American pop singer Ariana Grande finished a show at the 21,000-seat Manchester Arena, a loud explosion outside sent screaming fans, many of them young girls, fleeing. The blast took place near the box office, the Greater Manchester Police said, and on Tuesday authorities said they believed they knew the identify of the bomber and were seeking to determine whether he had acted alone or was part of a broader terror network. World leaders including President Trump issued condemnations, and national campaigning for Britain’s June 8 general election was suspended. It was the U.K.’s second terror attack this year and deadliest since 2005.

Hard to believe that there’s no inventory of Veterans’ Memorials.

LIBERTY: “All peoples have the right to self-determination”

Sunday, May 21, 2017

FROM A FACEBOOK DISCUSSION WITH A RELATIVE
(who’s both a hard left Democrat and a Gooferment employee)

*** begin quote ***

Aside from the fiscal death cliff of that would destroy the state from within, your guy Scalia threw water on this . “If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede,” wrote Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in 2010.

Other than fringe libertarians there are no legal conversation that supports a states right to secede.

Don’t let states fool you- they depend on the federal government for their existence. All the noise about states being independent of the federal government is a game played by republican governors and legislators.

Well, I’m sure if you look at the USSR documents, their collapse wasn’t covered either.

“Right to secede”? Hmmm, interesting concept.

All peoples have the right to self-determination. … All peoples have the right to self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.

UNPO: Self-determination
http://www.unpo.org/article/4957

The UN says I do.

The question becomes that when NH secedes, will the Federal Gooferment roll tanks on us?

Personally, I don’t care if they do or don’t . If they do, then the fraud of a peaceful benevolent Union is unmasked. If they don’t, we’re free of the tyranny of the “District of Corruption”. Either was, liberty wins.

p.s., The Tenth Amendment to the Constitution reserves all the unstated rights to The States or to The People. Since the “Right to Secede” is UNSTATED, then I must have it.
