Treasury may borrow federal retirement funds in debt emergency

The government could temporarily tap tens of billions of dollars from two federal employee retirement programs if Congress fails to raise the federal debt ceiling next month, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told lawmakers.

The government expects to hit a $14.3 trillion debt ceiling on May 16 or before, Geithner said in a Monday letter.

Geither implored Congress to extend the debt ceiling by that deadline and said that if Congress does not, Treasury will be forced to borrow money from the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund, and the Thrift Savings Plan’s Government Securities Investment Fund, or G Fund, both of which are invested in U.S. Treasury securities. Those two moves could free up $142 billion through early July.

Was it wrong for Wisconsin, expressly citing the Kentucky Resolutions of 1798 and 1799 (which introduced nullification into the American political lexicon), to oppose the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850?

Is the federal war on drugs just A-OK, even though it’s been called the new Jim Crow, just because it happens to be carried out by our wise overlords in Washington rather than by the states?

Would it have been easier or more difficult for the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century to carry out their atrocities against vulnerable minorities (whether Jews or Ukrainian “kulaks” as the case may be) had those countries instead been loose confederations of states?

In other words, although states at all levels are capable of great enormities, why is the moral benefit of the doubt given to the most murderous institution in human history, instead of to those decentralizing forces that seek to limit its predatory behavior?

He now has no arrows left in his quiver.

Having failed to stand firm for just $61 billion in cuts in a budget of $3.7 trillion, how can we expect him to stand firm over the debt limit extension or the 2012 budget?

As I’ve blogged and said before, I am NOT a “birth-er”. Those folks believe that BHO44 was not born in the USA. To me, that’s as irrational to believe that he was born in the USA. Neither belief has ANY evidence to back it up. Hence I am a “proof-er”.

The short form certificate produced by the DNC was an obvious kludge. You couldn’t get a passport, driver license, or such with it.

And, what about all the other “paperwork” that is being suppressed.

At a cost of millions of dollars.

What’s being hidden?

The other night, I couldn’t believe my ears. Two IT execs, both of whom I like and respect, advocated a return to the draft. Each for different reasons, but both advocated for it.

I was speechless.

… but only for a few minutes.

Having been drafted, had my life, and the live of my loved ones, ripped apart by the Viet Nam war — may Presidents IKE, JFK, and LBJ have a special ever lasting reward for their role in it — and seen loved ones inalterably changed by it. I saw a country ripped apart. Families divided. Old friends lost forever. And not just by battlefield deaths. I’ve seen at least one set of sweethearts ripped apart, never to marry, and never to have been what they could have been. Next to Lincoln’s War, what I call the War of Northern Aggression, can I imagine a more “natural disaster” type devastation on the USA. WW2 wasn’t as corrosive to the American spirit.

Any way, snapping back to reality, I took up the opposition.

Point #1 — the draft would stop foreign wars because the American public would have their sons in any war; the all volunteer service means that the poor minorities fight the wars.

This was Charlie Rangel’s idea. The draft didn’t keep us out of Viet Nam. And, the big Gooferment war hawks don’t seem to be kept out of anything in the way of a foreign war. I believe the Dead Old White Guys knew that a standing army was dangerous. Too likely to be used. The Constitution calls for the Army to be around for only two years. How did we let it become an eternal institution? Only the Navy as an ongoing entity is “constitutional”. If you want to prevent wars, and Presidents who think they are above the Constitutional requirement for Congress to declare war, your going to have to impeach one or two to get the message across. And, the voters are going to have to back up that action.

Of course, when women get their act together, they can unilaterally stop offensive wars. “Yes, when we get out of here. We’re going to have to fix that. You know we control something that can get it done. Not the ballot box, but the other box. (A giant sucking sound as pure Miss Marie used that very rude idiom.) Point #2 — the draft and boot camp would be good for the young; teaching them discipline and needed life skills. And, an unspoken “benefit” was to create a common bond that would transcend “culture”. (Omitted because of the racist overtones.)

This is the height of ego. I know what’s good for you young whippersnappers. Why in my day we walked (insert absurd number) to and from school. Uphill both ways.

If in fact, there was NO army, then, and only then, would there be an argument that every yungster might be called on to defend the homeland. Think Israel where every girl and boy does a tour in the Army; they have a Civil Defense problem. Or, Switzerland, where every man gets trained and a military grade rifle and ammo to take home; with follow up drills every so often.

But, to say “You have to go to basic because it’s good for you” is absurdly trivial. To quote a modern clergyman recently in the news: “Who the hell do you think you are?”

You have no right to force me to do anything.

If we had a culture of self-defense, then maybe you might say that as condition of voting, you have to be capable of defending the USA.

And, maybe it’s in the form of a voluntary summer camp for ten weeks the summer after your 16th birthday. And, maybe it’s a one shot opportunity. And, maybe it’s justified. And maybe there are different ones for boys and girls.

And, maybe the whole thing is a bad idea?

RANGEL REINTRODUCES DRAFT BILL

WASHINGTON – Lawmaker Says Volunteer Military May be Overwhelmed by Military Challenges in Iran, North Korea and Syria requiring more troops who will have to be drafted

Congressman Charles Rangel today introduced new legislation to reinstate the military draft that will include draftees up to 42 years of age.

“Every day that the military option is on the table, as declared by the President in his State of the Union address, in Iran, North Korea, and Syria, reinstatement of the military draft is an option that must also be considered, whether we like it or not,” Congressman Rangel said. “If the military is already having trouble getting the recruits they need, what can we do to fill the ranks if the war spreads from Iraq to other countries? We may have no other choice but a draft.”

The bill would mandate military service for men and women between the ages of 18 and 42. Deferments would be allowed only for completion of high school up to the age of 20, and for reasons of health, conscience or religious belief. Recruits not needed by the military in any given year would be required to perform some national civilian service.

Most say the US should establish a “no-fly” zone over Libya, pretending that it is a benign, virtually cost-free action, and the least we could do to assist those trying to oust the Gaddafi regime. Even by the loose standards of the War Powers Resolution, which cedes far too much power to the president, he would have no authority to engage in hostilities because we have not been attacked – not by Gaddafi, and not by the rebels. I would strongly oppose such a measure, but that is the proper way to proceed.

Or, is the real objective to live out out version of morality. To serve public witness that we are following a different vision of what its right and proper and invite other to travel that path with us?

I have blogged about I think it was Arkansas winning the NCAA but their graduation rate was under 10% and they were sued by one of their “graduates” sued for being an illiterate. The NCAA basketball offering is about money. Pure and simple. “Schools”, or organizations purporting to be schools, suck in young poor black men, with the illusion that they can make it to the NBA, supposedly compensate them for their effort with an “education”, create all sorts of “rules” to supposedly keep the game amateur, collect millions operating a meat grinder, all to support the illusion of amateur “Student Athletes”. The only part that’s “amateur” is that the players don’t get paid. And, they said Lincoln freed the slaves. That was an illusion too.

The fact that most of the top sports programs are State funded schools further illustrates the arena that MC is completing against. The deck is stack in sports, and in the economics of free public education. MC will succeed only be being unique and offering that something that I think makes my fellow Jasper “good people”.

Firing a Coach, for not winning, is imho morally wrong. When the NCAA sanctions Schools for “student athletes” being illiterate, then maybe it’s be OK. Till then, have no doubt, it’s about money. Nothing else. To play their game is a mistake.

I apologize to my fellow Jaspers here and on FACEBOOK if this comes off “holier than thou”. Here’s my minority opinion. Like that movie line, “We’re better than that”. … …

… … I think MC is better than that.

In recorded history, what civilization permits femicide — in all sorts of ways.

It’s a path down a dead end street. Like abortion. Like the Shakers. It leads to extinction.

China has a problem because they have socially engineered their way into not having enough women. Good for them. They need a few social problems to work on.

Now, personally, as a little L libertarian, they can do whatever they want in their section of the world. The USA should be like Switzerland. Don’t ask us, we’re neutral. Everyone has to fight for the rights they want to preserve.

Frankly, in the competitive world market, I’m glad when our competition ties half their population in mental bondage. Imagine if all those women were doing their thing we might have to worry. The phrase “if momma ain’t happy, no one is happy” comes to mind.

And, women have the power to change the world for peace if they ever decide to use it.

RANT: A comment about Gooferment Skrules

Despite having no children of my own, I fought about this during the NJ Tax Revolt of the 80’s. This is a multi-part problem. And, it’s not ALL the fault of the Teachers’ Union. The politicians and bureaucrats have created a mess and “We, The People” have allowed it to happen.

First problem is the Parents. Yup, they are part of the problem; probably the most important part. They tolerate this “barbara streisand”. No one has children and wants to see them ruined. Yet, that very decision they make to procreate, I am expected to pay for. Education is the parent’s responsibility. First and foremost. No one else’s. To assume that the Gooferment has a role, any role, in “education” is to cede the very ground that the battle must be fought on.

So now let’s deal with the situation at hand. We can’t wave a magic wand and make it “magically delicious”. People have been trained, like dogs doing tricks, into thinking that this is the best or only way. We have to reverse that over time and allow people to adapt.

Right now, “we” have Gooferment Skrules. The Gooferment “pays” and “operates”. So I would suggest we have to adapt out of it in two steps. Two twenty year plans! (Yeah, I know it sounds like the USSR and its always failing Five Year Plans.) Focus first on operation. Create vouchers equal to 20k and give them to 5% more students each year. At the end of 20 years, parents will have been trained to “buy” their children’s education. Then, for the next 20 years, reduce the voucher by 5%. This will push the bill more and more to the parents. (They decided to have them and they will have to pay to educate them.) Churches, businesses, and a civil society will create new forms of schooling for new subjects and the poor. (Remember Catholic schools were created for the poor.)

I think this would solve the problem. Not quickly but eventually it would. Permanently!

RANT: The Irish bishops are making a severe blunder

Less than a week before elections in the Irish republic, the Irish bishops’ conference has released a statement charging that current public policies violate principles of justice and offend against the common good.

The statement released by the bishops’ committee on justice and peace, entitled From Crisis to Hope: Working to achieve the Common Good, said that the country’s current economic problems can be traced to immoral policies and perspectives. “Greed became dominant, trust was betrayed, and the result was the recession in which we now are,” said Bishop John Kirby of Clonfert, at a press conference in Dublin introducing the statement.

Bishop Raymond Field, a Dublin auxiliary who chairs the justice-and-peace committee, said: “Poverty and social exclusion, experienced by increasing numbers of people in Ireland today, North and South, represent gross violations of human dignity.”

The bishops’ statement called for greater efforts to relieve poverty, both in Ireland and, through foreign aid, in developing countries. The statement suggested that Ireland’s tax rates must be raised to support the necessary social services.

With all due respect to the Irish bishops, they are made a severe blunder. They are not fighting the evil King, defending human freedom, and protecting religious freedom.

They are buying into the meme of a government that does everything. The Nanny State.

A better meme is “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”.

They would be better served by learning from the Good Samaritan. He helped the victim out of his own pocket. He didn’t make others pay for his charity. He took pity on the victim but didn’t call for the Gooferment to fix the problem.

There are many reasons why the bishops are blundering. Two that come to mind right off the top of the head — charity to be effective has to be personal — AND — involving politicians and bureaucrats makes the overhead costs skyrocket.

Poverty can’t be fixed by stealing from some and giving to others.

The USA’s “War on Poverty” is an abject failure. The richest country in the world and in recorded history couldn’t “solve” poverty. Because Gooferment was the meme.

Is it charitable to keep the poor poor?

Gooferment “welfare” isn’t designed for people to prosper. It’s designed to keep the maximum number of voters voting and bureaucrats employed.

Peal away the disincentives to success and train people to stand on their own two feet and help themselves. Tough love. With Churches, Fraternal Organizations, Clubs, Societies, Families, Clans and groups to provide “help”. “Help” that really helps; not ensnares people in despair and multi-generational poverty as “welfare farmers”.

We can do better. And, the bishops should lead; not whine for more Gooferment handouts.

Argh!

I don’t agree with him. Where there’s smoke there is fire.

The Birgitta have raised a plausible and credible claim. Congress held hearings on McCain’s eligibility; why not Obama’s?

Was a deal struck between the D’s and the R’s?

As Judge Judy says about “notarized tongues”, I don’t trust any of them. Maybe Ron Paul, but none of the others.

Last August, _TLE_ ran a piece by our frequent contributor Jim Davidson about the hypocrisy of the federal judiciary. Three federal judges had just authorized a practice in which armed government agents could feel free to trespass on a citizen’s property without a warrant or probable cause, in order to affix a GPS tracker to that citizen’s car.

Our columnist’s natural and logical response was to deprive these judges of privacy the same way they were allowing the privacy of the individuals who pay their salaries (however involuntarily) to be violated. Using only publicly available sources, he published their names, addresses, and other information. Let me state that again, so there can be no mistake: he published their names, addresses, and other such information which he had obtained from purely public sources.

This week — six months later — we have been notified, first by our domain registrar GoDaddy.com, then in an e-mail from the U.S. Marshals’ “service” that we must remove the offending article from _TLE_’s website, in order to assure the safety of the judges and their families. (This, of course, begs the question, why in the hell their information is publicly available if it constitutes a threat to their safety.) GoDaddy.com has refused to answer reasonable questions about this affair — such as precisely what Terms of Service we were in violation of — instead simply repeating the order to remove the material.

We have complied.
