I can’t imagine anything more stupid than going out into the woods unprepared.
To me a scout “leader” should be prepared to defend his troop.
A nice 1911 45 on his hip would have been a LOT more effective than a rock hammer.
And, depending upon the ages of the scouts, they could be packing as well.
What would out pioneering fore fathers say?
Fools and wimps, maybe.
Glad everyone survived.
