You have to be kidding me!

I could understand a lot of the possible answers, but … this one stuns me!

  1. “and 20,288 Jainists, some of whom sweep the floor with a broom made of cotton threads as they walk along so as not to kill any insects”

I’ve always had some sympathy for the Jainists. When I was a kid I started an “Ant Club.” Our mission was not just to study ants, but to save them. We’d block off sections of the sidewalks where ant colonies were thriving and tell adults they weren’t allowed to walk there because they might step on the ants. Seriously. And to this day I still try to deal with the “ant problem” in my kitchen by nonviolently “sweeping” the ants away from the food areas and trying ruses like “painting” a thin smear of dishwashing liquid along the back edges of the kitchen counter to discourage them from their scavenging missions (Seems to work actually! And it’s totally non-toxic!)
