RANT: The most murderous institution in human history; time for a new meme?

Oppose DC? You Must Hate Mankind

Would it have been wrong for the states to try to nullify the internment of the Japanese in the 1940s?

Was it wrong for Wisconsin, expressly citing the Kentucky Resolutions of 1798 and 1799 (which introduced nullification into the American political lexicon), to oppose the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850?

Is the federal war on drugs just A-OK, even though it’s been called the new Jim Crow, just because it happens to be carried out by our wise overlords in Washington rather than by the states?

Would it have been easier or more difficult for the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century to carry out their atrocities against vulnerable minorities (whether Jews or Ukrainian “kulaks” as the case may be) had those countries instead been loose confederations of states?

In other words, although states at all levels are capable of great enormities, why is the moral benefit of the doubt given to the most murderous institution in human history, instead of to those decentralizing forces that seek to limit its predatory behavior?

Why do we tolerate the Gooferment?

RANT: Maybe secession is the only alternative?

IT’S NO DEAL, IT’S A SELLOUT By Dick Morris And Eileen McGann 04.9.2011

*** begin quote ***

John Boehner has just given away the Republican victory of 2010 at the bargaining table. Like the proverbial Uncle Sam who always wins the war but loses the peace, he has unilaterally disarmed the Republican Party by showing that he will not shut down the government and will, instead, willingly give way on even the most modest of cuts in order to avoid it. He now has no arrows left in his quiver.

Having failed to stand firm for just $61 billion in cuts in a budget of $3.7 trillion, how can we expect him to stand firm over the debt limit extension or the 2012 budget?

*** and ***

In short, we have accomplished nothing by our hard work in 2010.

Except we have learned a lesson.

And the lesson is this: We need to purify our party and purge it of the likes of John Boehner and all those Congressmen who vote for the budget sellout. The Tea Party must take the lead in this purifying fire. We must not let the RINOs win!

*** end quote ***

Argh, maybe secession is the only alternative?

MEMORIES: JDRF contributions to honor Our Girl

Saturday, April 9, 2011

Our Girl fought terror. She’d seen diabetes cripple her brother and the side effects rip her family apart. Then, she fell victim to the disease. It ravaged her body, destroyed her plans for children, weighed her down later in life, and eventually killed her kidneys. She contributed to diabetes research when she was alive and had them in her will. It was easy to suggest JDRF in the obit.

The following people generously contributed (in alpha order):

Mr. Vincent Alline

Mr. & Mrs. William Fife

Mrs. Rita Gavin

Ms. Ritanne Greenberger

Ms. Mary E. McGready

Parriott Family Charitable Fund

Ms. Holly Rettig

While it’s too late for Our Girl, maybe we can make a difference in someone else’s “Our Girl”.

I am deeply grateful for these people honoring Our Girl.

SERVICE: Defending against the Epsilon Hack

Epsilon Hack

*** begin quote ***

I have no idea why the Epsilon hack is getting so much press.

Yes, millions of names and e-mail addresses might have been stolen. Yes, other customer information might have been stolen, too. Yes, this personal information could be used to create more personalized and better targeted phishing attacks.

*** end quote ***

You should shift to your own domain. Sorry, but yahoo, gmail, and hotmail make you a sitting duck for this hack.Your own domain just moves you out of the target zone.

Alpha spammers just keep trying every id from AA@yahoo.com to ZZZZZZZZZ@hotmail.com and then they turn around and repeat.

So you get “MYDOMAIN.COM”. (You can even push all the email to GMAIL for free.)

Then you create a spreadsheet or use a tool like LASTPASS, ROBOFORM, or such.

Now you assign email addresses to your correspondents. And, add a magic random string to the name, like, k7sa yk2k3 ggfn a2zq

Best Buy ==> BestBuy_k7sa @ MYDOMAIN.COM
Target ===>  Target_yk2k3  @ MYDOMAIN.COM
Verizon ===> Verizon_ggfn  @ MYDOMAIN.COM
Walgreens ==> Walgreens_a2zq @ MYDOMAIN.COM

You can then write email filters that will quarantine emails that arrive without the proper address.

If Best Buy messages come without the “k7sa”, you know that it’s not the address that you gave them.

If non-Best Buy messages come in with the “k7sa”, you know that it’s a compromised email address.

Go change your address at Best Buy and write a filter to trash any “k7sa” email.

It’s just like having unique passwords for all accounts.

MEMORIES: The Donner Pass versus Dungeness Crabs

Friday, April 8, 2011

http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/03/30/v-lite/1605041/near-record-sierra-snow-good-news.html

201103310623.jpg

This picture triggered a memory from the mid to late Seventies.

I had an AT&T training mission to San Francisco. She took the time to go with me. I planned the flights to give us a long weekend in Reno. She was excited because we’d never been there before. Side trips to Virginia City and Tahoe. Fly back Tuesday afternoon not red eye; in at 1AM. I had work Wednesday.

Go! Flight out, great. San Fran, great. (But too many Dungeness Crabs fmpov!) She had a ball.

Mission complete. Checkout. Pack unlimited mileage Hertz. Up route 80 to Reno. Thru the Donner Pass. Discussion of the Donner Party. Notice the GIGANTIC snow rods on the roadside. Twice the height of the tractor trailers passing them. Automatic signs with the choices: road closed, 4 wheel drive only, chains required – all vehicles, chains required – trucks, chains recommended, caution, and clear. Made an impression on me. Those signs were new since the last time I drove the pass.

We checked into the hotel, played, and had a ball.

On Friday, I was watching the news. Weather forecasted snow starting Saturday at Noon. I make an executive decision: “Evacuate; Saturday morning.”

Needless to say, Our Girl was not pleased.

With her trademarked “prune face”, “Aren’t you over reacting?” I said: “I’ll take the car back down to Frisco. You can come down by bus or plane and I’ll meet you to go home. I can’t lose my job because of a little weather.” Maybe that scared her. Being alone in a strange city. She knew I’d never leave her unless the circumstances were exceptional. We were always joined at the hip. “Fine!!! we’ll go. What time Saturday?” “On the road by noon.” “Fine!!!” (Definitely not fine, but she was a trooper. No passive aggressive subtle sabotage. Decision was made; she saluted and carried on.) But, I don’t think we went to bed that night. As usual, she packed a lot of living into the time available.

But we were on the road about 11AM. Snow flakes were falling. Radio was reporting a bad storm was starting. I may have sped a little down 80. Hit the pass and the road sign was light “caution”. When we exited the pass about 30 minutes later, the sign was “chains required – all vehicles”. We cruised into San Fran, checked into an airport hotel for the Sat-Sun-Mon stay, dropped bags, and went for crabs. She was mollified. We went to a movie.

Returning to the hotel, the radio reported that the Donner Pass was closed for the next few days with more than 4 feet of snow.

She, in one of the few times I ever remember, says: “That was a good call.”

Treasured that. Didn’t happen too often. Those were few and far between. (Probably because there were few times one of us had to make a tough call and override the other. We always talked our way to consensus.)

I think the Gambling versus Dungeness Crabs tradeoff was a pretty even swap.

The Donner Pass reopened the follow Saturday.

Subsequently, whenever we did the “SanFran-Reno” dodge, she always say “Watch the weather.” I did, but we never had to pull the trigger like that.

Funny the stuff you remember.

FUN: Children are … serendipitious

Thursday, April 7, 2011

… funny.

Had dinner with in-laws tonight.

I have no idea how the topic came up, but a very smart 6+ year old male informed me: “Children are free.” When I inquired: “How so?” He continued on: “Well, mommies just drop them out.”

(Good thing I wasn’t drinking or it would have been a “beverage through the nose” moment.)

I would have liked to hear more of his wisdom, but Mommy and Daddy piled on.

“What about diapers?” “What about food and fun?”

He was defending gallantly. “You get diapers free at the hospital.” Followed by: “Parents have to eat and do stuff anyway.”

He was overwhelmed. But it was cute and I thought very astute. The first vestiges of real thought. Plus I really wanted to hear more about how they “just drop out”.

BTW, when I did the USAF emergency air medicine course, a tough old Master Sargent and a young shiny butter bar LT / doc, described how, in the unlikely case of an emergency delivery, we were instructed in the emergencies we could handle. Assuming that “there are NO REAL people available”! (We weren’t considered to be very valuable.) A lot of the course was an emphasis on not screwing things up. For example, in the absence of sterile sheets, we’re to use clean newspaper. For example, in the absence on antiseptic, we were to “scrub up” with anything, but check with the pilot and / or the flight master, some one will have flask. For example, in a breech birth, push the baby back and turn it head first. For example, a tangled cord has to be cut and clamped at both ends and use anything sterile to clamp. The pièce de résistance of the whole day was his description of a normal birth. “Listen morons, if you’re lucky, then all you’ll have to do is stand by and catch the baby as it just drops out“.

Funny to hear the words of a crusty old USAF Sargent repeated by a very smart 6+ year old. Guess you had to be in both places to enjoy the serendipity.

I always wished I got a chance to deliver a baby. Came close twice, but no cigar. Should I put that on my bucket list.

Loophole Lets N.J. Pols Double Dip

PHILADELPHIA – This may not sound new because we’ve been talking about it in Philadelphia in connection with its Deferred Retirement Option Plan, or DROP.

That has cost the pension fund millions and been abused by elected officials.

But now we’re looking at it happening in New Jersey.

Several high-ranking political leaders found a loophole allowing them to retire and then go back to work, collecting a pension and salary at the same time.

TINFOILHAT: Milk is a “chemistry experiment”?

The Truth Behind Milk by M.D. CREEKMORE on THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2011

*** begin quote ***

Doesn’t anyone ever wonder why Europe won’t drink our milk? Or better yet, doesn’t anyone ever wonder why it’s okay for Americans to drink it when it’s banned in most European countries, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand? Apparently it’s because these other countries’ governments are not into lying to their citizens as much as the American government is. The reason Europe won’t drink our milk—or eat our cheese—is because our milk contains rBGH, recombinant bovine growth hormone.

And Monsanto and FDA prevent milk from being labeled.

Judge gives ‘Juror No. 799’ indefinite jury duty after she makes racist remarks on questionnaire

BY JOHN MARZULLI DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

An incensed federal judge sentenced a racist Brooklyn woman to indefinite jury duty on Tuesday after she trashed the NYPD and minorities.

“This is an outrage, and so are you!” Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis told the woman, holding up her bile-filled juror questionnaire.

Juror No. 799, an Asian woman in her 20s who said she works in the garment industry, was up for jury duty in the death penalty trial of Bonanno crime boss Vincent (Vinny Gorgeous) Basciano.
