Argh!

A few decades too late.

I received so many parking tickets in my youth from alternate side of the street parking!

Most of them were written by the same cop. I think his name was Krupick.

I deserved most of them.

But, several were written at 7:01 AM and I called the police station at 6:45 to complain.

It didn’t help. The deck was stacked.

That’s when I became anti-Gooferment!

POLITICAL: Switch all pension plans to defined-contribution!

A Wake-Up Call for Public Pension Systems
Jason Russell | 10/03/2014 |

*** begin quote ***

For decades, public pension systems have been doling out more than they take in. Labor unions have stymied reform efforts, but the latest estimates of the public pension gap may finally serve as a wake-up call.

A new study from Moody’s Investors Service, the bond credit rating business, reports that the level of unfunded liabilities for the 25 largest state and local U.S. public pensions is now more than $2 trillion. The gap is more than three times higher than it was just a decade ago.

*** and ***

No one wants to see pensioners live poorer lives, caused by broken promises and bankrupt pensions. The public pension system’s integrity must be protected with common-sense reforms that acknowledge the reality of the constantly growing pension gap. The ideal reform for struggling pension systems would be a switch from defined-benefit to defined-contribution pension plans.

Best possible outcome for the poor and the taxpayers is that these “disaster zones” go broke. Like Detroit.

Ebola outbreak: Why Obama is allowing Ebolaphobia to spread
By Dr. Keith Ablow

*** begin quote ***

Adults admit to anxiety about whether the illness could strike many more people here, and children have confided to me that they are terrified of Ebola. And what is being said is only the obvious part of the psychological virus (call it “Ebolophobia”) that is spreading; I would venture that millions of people are already unconsciously spending mental energy to suppress their worries that the disease could infect them or those they love.

Part of the preventive health strategy to help contain this psychological virus should be a reliable flow of information and bold policy from the Obama administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But, already, their response lacks the necessary element of steady stewardship. And that’s because of President Obama’s continuing reticence to put America first.

Libertarian Party submits statement in opposition to Oregon “top two”

Vote NO on Oregon Measure 90
Libertarian National Committee Chair Nicholas Sarwark submitted the below statement in opposition to Oregon’s “top two” ballot Measure 90 for inclusion in the state’s voter pamphlet.

The pamphlet is being mailed to each voter household in the state in advance of the November election.

Vote No on Measure 90

Oregon 2014 Statewide Ballot Initiative

Measure 90 takes away your choice.

Imagine a store where you can buy Coke, Pepsi, juice, energy drinks, water, and many other beverages. But you go back to the store in November and can only buy Coke or Pepsi. Or, even worse, only Coke and Diet Coke. You don’t drink soda, but that’s all they have because Coke and Pepsi were the most popular beverages earlier in the year.

You wouldn’t put up with a store that didn’t let you buy juice because it wasn’t one of the top two beverages. Why put up with it when choosing political leaders?

How much choice do you have when the only two candidates on the ballot in November are two Democrats, two Republicans, or one of each?

That’s what happens in California and Washington where only two candidates on Election Day is the law. General elections have only two candidates, often from the same party: two Democrats or two Republicans!

Robber barons in the 1800s passed laws to give themselves an economic monopoly. They used laws to corner the market, raise prices and rake in lucrative profits — without competition getting in their way.

Proponents of Measure 90 want a political monopoly. They want to shield their favored candidates — usually incumbents — from competition. They want to pander to their special-interest pals — without political challengers getting in their way.

Proponents claim Measure 90 will increase voter turnout in primary elections. But after California passed this law, the 2014 primary election had the lowest voter turnout in history.

Measure 90 greases the skids for incumbents and multi-millionaires while practically outlawing grassroots candidates who offer voters fresh choices from new political parties, Democratic and Republican challengers, independents, and write-in candidates.

Many measures could substantially improve voter participation, but Measure 90 will make things worse. It hands elections to incumbents, millionaires, and elites while silencing the voice of everyday workers, taxpayers, and citizens.

Vote No on Measure 90.

Shaneen Allen to Avoid Prison as New Jersey AG Revises Sentencing Guidance for Gun Law Violations

Posted on September 26, 2014

*** begin quote ***

In a stunning outbreak of sanity in the Garden State, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain has reversed his earlier decision to seek prison time for Shaneen Allen, a single mother from Philadelphia who was facing felony prosecution for misunderstanding concealed carry reciprocity rules. The decision came after John Hoffman, acting New Jersey Attorney General, issued statewide guidance to county prosecutors clarifying the application of New Jersey’s mandatory sentencing scheme to certain minor firearm violations. These developments mean that not only will Ms. Allen and her children be spared the ordeal of her facing a felony conviction and lengthy prison term but that other travelers who unwittingly violate New Jersey’s harsh laws gun laws may also avoid a similar nightmare.

*** end quote ***

Could it be that Ray Rice getting a pass to “pre-trial intervention” and the Shaneen Allen facing a 5 year prison term from the same Prosecutor and Judge get enough “heat” placed on Prez candidate Guv Christie to “reverse course”?

There is a long list of compounds that of been isolated from turmeric, and it’s possible that each component in the mixture of curcumin-like compounds plays a distinct role in making it useful against Alzheimer’s disease, and hence a mixture of compounds might better represent turmeric in its medicinal value better than curcumin alone. But why concoct some artificial mixture when Mother Nature already did it for us with turmeric? Because you can’t patent the spice. “Holy Sh*t. I Survived.” Woman Shoots Elusive Stalker Who Tormented Her For Six Months, Then Bares Her Soul OnlinePosted by Bob Owens on September 26, 2014 at 4:33 pm

*** begin quote ***

I Shot My Stalker Tonight

I’m writing this staring at the mess the police left for me, in a bit of a fog. After 6 months of stalking and threats against my life my stalker finally snapped and decided to kick my door in and make good on his promise. Out of fear, the past month I had begun sleeping with a chair propped against my front door, to give myself a few extra precious seconds in case of emergency. I shudder to think how differently things might’ve turned out had I not barricaded the door. I awoke around 115 am to the sound of the door giving way after one kick followed by the sounds of my stalker struggling to dislodge the chair while forcing his way inside. I jumped up and grabbed the gun I’ve learned to do everything even shower with. I stood at the top of my stairs and fired twice. Hitting him in the chest, I hear his scream, his disbelief that I’d stood up for myself.. 0 to 100 in milliseconds. I’ve never been so afraid in my life. I do not know if he is living, but I do know the police have him and that’s what helps the most. For months of him evading the police I began to question whether he was unstoppable. Untraceable. Houdini, he would murder me and get away with it. As of now I’m in a haze of guilt, surprise, relief and disbelief. I shook as the canines drag him out from his hiding place under a bush. I survived, where so many people do not. Holy sh*t, I survived.

*** end quote ***

That solves that problem.

As readers know, I think “restraining orders” should come with a “hunting permit”.

In this case, the “bad guy” was stopped but a “good woman with a gun”.

She should work on her aim.

Varmints — two and four legged — should be put down for good.

We’re witnessing the power that a small, but targeted local petition can have over the war against bike theft. Please join our petition: Demand eBay and Craiglist Require Serial Numbers on Bike Listings.

$400 Million in Bicycles Stolen Annually

That’s a lot of bicycles from owners who, in some cases, invested heavily in their two wheels and depend on them to get around. In the U.S., only 18 percent of bicycle thieves are ever arrested. One reason is that victim and thief rarely know each other. Another reason is that bicycle theft is largely a crime of stealth, one that goes unnoticed or unchallenged. Then there’s the problem of proof of ownership — most owners simply can’t provide enough details to help investigators locate a missing bike. Even if the bike is recovered, detained suspects are often released due to the proof-of-ownership problem. This is why so few recovered bicycles are ever returned to their owners. When thieves steal bikes, they often sell them to get rid of the evidence and cash in on the crime.

How Thieves Sell Stolen Bikes

The Internet has been a huge tool for bicycle thieves. Criminals waste no time putting stolen bikes on online eBay and Craigslist to sell them and rarely get caught or punished. Once a bike’s serial numbers are removed, thieves can unload a stolen bike to an unwitting consumer with very low risk. It’s too difficult to identify a bicycle in an online listing (even with a photo) to prove ownership or to get law enforcement to act. Unlike motor vehicles (where standardized VIN numbers, mandatory licensing and required incident reporting can help locate and ID a stolen car, van or truck), bicycle registration is not widespread, making ownership difficult to establish. There is one crucial thing we can do to help stop bicycle theft: no serial number, no sale.

The mother of ISIS beheading victim James Foley told CNN’s Anderson Cooper, on September 11, that she was “embarrassed and appalled” by the White House’s handling of her son’s kidnapping. On September 8 a spokesman for the family of ISIS victim Steven Sotloff claimed that both families were “bullied and hectored” by the administration.

So how many Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) network stories have been devoted to helping these families tell their shocking stories of a White House that let them down and even intimidated them? Just three (CBS 2, ABC 1, NBC 0).

However, in the summer of 2005 when anti-Iraq war mom Cindy Sheehan camped out in front of George W. Bush’s Crawford, Texas ranch the networks flooded their evening and morning shows with 100 stories (ABC 37, NBC 33, CBS 30) in the first month (August 9 through September 9) of coverage alone.

Exclusive: Angry with Washington, 1 in 4 Americans open to secession
By Scott Malone
BOSTON Fri Sep 19, 2014 7:41am EDT

*** begin quote ***

(Reuters) – The failed Scottish vote to pull out from the United Kingdom stirred secessionist hopes for some in the United States, where almost a quarter of people are open to their states leaving the union, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

Some 23.9 percent of Americans polled from Aug. 23 through Sept. 16 said they strongly supported or tended to support the idea of their state breaking away, while 53.3 percent of the 8,952 respondents strongly opposed or tended to oppose the notion.

The urge to sever ties with Washington cuts across party lines and regions, though Republicans and residents of rural Western states are generally warmer to the idea than Democrats and Northeasterners, according to the poll.

*** end quote ***

Interesting.

Haven’t seen any analysis of why the vote failed.

Just from casual browsing, the “secessionists” didn’t have a plan or reasonable answers.

For example, just what I read and thought of:

* Money

No one addressed what currency they would use. The secessionists could have just said “free market” (e.g., USD$, Euro, UK pound, gold / silver). Imagine the vigor of the market that would evolve. If they adopted an “honest money”, imagine that they could displace the Swiss as the “store of value”.

* Defense

They could have said we’ll be like the Swiss. MYOB. Not much offensive “defense” needed.

* Debt

They could have offered to take a per capita share of the UK debt with them.

Did I miss anything?
