CLOUD: My WSP is getting security happy

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Dear Mr. Reinke,

My team and I are happy to assist you by phone at any time.
The privacy of your data is very important to us. To further increase our
security
standards, we have created a new security feature for your telephone
conversations
with our support team: the 1&1 Support PIN.

What is the 1&1 Support PIN?
Beginning now, when calling our support team your authentication will come
from the 1&1 Support PIN. The Support PIN is a unique number known only by
you.
It can be created or updated easily in your 1&1 Control Panel. For security
reasons,
we recommend changing the Support PIN after every authentication.

Log in to your 1&1 Control Panel now to create your personal Support PIN
under
“My Data” > “User Settings”: https://www.1and1.com/login

What should you consider?
You will need your Support PIN only when you are calling us. It is not
necessary
to change your Support PIN after we have called you.

Do you have any questions?
Additional information on the 1&1 Support PIN is available at:
http://help.1and1.com/article/792369

You can also give us a call – my team and I are happy to assist
– 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:
1-866-991-2631 (free of charge)
Or send an e-mail to: aaron-n@1and1.com

We wish you a lot of success as you continue using your 1&1 product!

Sincerely yours,

Aaron Nye
Head of Operations US
1&1 Internet Inc

I’m not sure it’s needed. I don’t ask for that much support. The last problem I had was years ago.

Now I have yet another pin?

MEMORIES: Our Girl would have appreciated this invention

I know that would have been really a blessing to Our Girl. She had to be poked several times a week during the last 5 years of her life. Always a hard stick, some techs were great; others horrible.

“Animals use streams and rivers as their toilets. And swimmers put germs in the water too—there’s a bit of feces in every butt crack,” Charles Gerba, an environmental microbiologist at the University of Arizona, said.
Chlorine or iodine tablets alone won’t eliminate Cryptosporidium or Giardia parasites. So invest in an MSR Sweet-Water Water Purifier System, which wipes out bacteria, parasites, and viruses and was a top-rated purifier in a U.S. military report. Bonus: It has an activated carbon core to improve taste.

“Keep the inlet and outlet hoses in separate bags to avoid cross contamination,” Gerba added.

When TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It) happens, there will be a lot of casualties.

For all those wannabes, this is a good litany of why they will be casualties too!

GOLD: An EXTRA 4,000 metric tons!

A Huge Gold Prediction… From Reality TV
Matt Insleyby Matt Insley.Posted Aug 30, 2013.

*** begin quote ***

You wouldn’t expect to find gold under Ghana’s tan brown soil.

But it’s there. Lots of it.

Whether it’s a brand new Caterpillar 330b, a piecemeal front end loader or an army of low-paid workers, excavators are moving top soil to unearth the gold-rich gravel. I’ve seen it all.

There’s a frenzied pace in this boom-country… today we’ll take a look. But more importantly we’ll see how Ghana’s gold rush has shed light on the decade’s MOST important gold trend.

*** and ***

In short, the two American yahoos, while trying to secure a mining claim, found thousands of Chinese nationals are overtaking many of the mining concessions in Ghana. It’s illegal, but no one was stopping the brute force of the Chinese. As one local tribesman admitted, the Chinese “have guns” and aren’t easy to move from a claim.

How Do You Say “Claim Jumper” In Chinese?

If you’re watching the reality show looking for a good plot the Chinese claim jumpers make for a good antagonist. But if you’re tuned in to the show as a gold watcher, you know there’s a lot more to this story.

For starters, what the heck are thousands of Chinese nationals crawling around Ghana’s gold fields for?

*** and ***

If we do some back of the envelope math, since the country’s last “official” announcement we’ll quickly see that China could be holding an EXTRA 4,000 metric tons (or more) of gold. That’s enough gold to place them firmly as the world’s second largest gold holder.

But let’s get back to that reality TV bit above. China, the way I see it, isn’t just producing large amounts of gold and legally importing bullion from Hong Kong.

*** end quote ***

Unless you think the Chinese are stupid, why are they pursuing the “barbarous relic”?

Do they suspect that the paper chase will end when the music stops?

And what does the poor Sheeple do?

Debt and “saves” in “dollars” (whatever those are) paying the inflation tax!

Argh!

Ohio State Introduces Massive Open Online Calculus

“Professors at the Ohio State University are embracing MOOCs, with a Massive Open Online Calculus Course — it is completely open source; everything is on github. There is are free videos, free online assessment system, and a free textbook!”

The mooculus textbook

Reading a math textbook is not quite the same as reading a novel—math is even more fun! To read mathematics, you need to bring a bit more than just the textbook to the table: you should also bring

a pen,
plenty of blank paper, and
courage to write everything down.
As you read mathematics, you must work along side of the text itself. You must write down each expression, sketch each graph, and think—always think!—about just what you are doing. You should work examples and fill in the details. Like all great things, this is no easy task.

You can begin reading now by downloading the textbook.

Does this portend the death of the bloated College and University system?

One can certainly see where “Credit by Examination” with supplement or at least minimize “Yack in the Box” meme. Attendence is no longer the proxy for achievement.

“Yes, welcome to Injineering Skrule. We’ve examined your test results and here are the courses you need, examinations you must pass, and projects you must complete to get our diploma that will tell folks you know something.”

Wow. What a change. Paradigm shift. Meme change!

Argh!

Glad I’m old. With that new paradigm / meme, there’d be no time for drinking and girls.

MEMORIES: “Where have all the flowers gone”

Thursday, September 5, 2013

This afternoon, PP&M came on randomly off the IPHONE5 with “Where have all the flowers gone”.

Sadly, the USA didn’t learn from Viet Nam.

I know now that the anti-war movement of the 60’s was astro-turfed by the D’s.

Unfortunately, a lot of good women and men have been hurt by that.

Sad that the Sheeple don’t learn.

Makes me sad.

I think of all the lost, all the suffering, and all the money wasted.

Where HAVE all the flowers gone.

Mary Travers, RIP.

INTERESTING: High Country Bandits; more dumb criminals

How “cell tower dumps” caught the High Country Bandits—and why it matters
Fishing expeditions can pay dividends—but do they need a warrant?
by Nate Anderson – Aug 29 2013, 8:00am EDT

*** begin quote ***

Cell tower dumps don’t provide the precision of GPS tracking, of course, but they can in some cases provide directional and range information from a specific tower at a specific time—close enough to pin people within a few hundred yards. Because warrant applications often remain sealed, however, even judges rarely know how other judges have ruled on them; Owsley was reduced to asking judges he met at conferences whether they had encountered the issue, which is becoming increasingly common.

In the end, Owsley supports the use of tower dumps, so long as agents seek a warrant first and so long as they explain their plan to purge all numbers not germane to the current case. In addition, he argues that those whose records are swept up should be notified after the fact—especially because the records have a bad habit of ending up as evidence in court cases.

*** end quote ***

A civil libertarian, like this little L libertarian, is always concerned when the Gooferment starts “fishing”.

In this particular case, I find no fault with what was done or the process.

Maybe they could work on doing it “faster”.

I have little sympathy for criminals. In this case with the facts given, the police seem to have done it “right”.

I’m not sure I understand the need to notify all the “discarded” numbers. Maybe some one can explain?

CLOUD: Google’s new “Remind Me”

Wednesday, September 4, 2013

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/08/check-out-googles-new-remind-me-feature-for-tv-shows-authors-and-more/

Check out Google’s new “Remind Me” feature for TV shows, authors, and more
Easily follow your favorite media properties in Google Now.
by Ron Amadeo – Aug 30 2013, 5:51pm EDT

*** begin quote ***

The “Remind Me” button works in search results on mobile and desktop, and the cards will show up in the Google search app for Android or iOS. You can view and remove your current reminder subscriptions from the “My Reminders” setting in Google Now or by searching for it again.

A reminders app is always useful, but a cloud-powered reminders app has more potential. Here’s hoping Google adds a bunch more supported categories (like sports teams). App integration would be great, too. Just scan my Play Music library for all favorite artists and add them as reminders. This should be live for everyone by now, so try searching!

*** end quote ***

After the Google Reader fiasco, I am reluctant to get excited about ANY Google “service”.

Plus TV is dependent upon which market and service you’re in at any given time.

And, a “reminder” to watch TV is counter to the whole “turn of the boob tube” meme.

Now a better way to stalk … err, I mean, track Taylor Swift’s << @twsift13 #tswift13 #tswift >> activities. That could be useful to this fat old Swiftie.

INTERESTING: Cold call victim’s revenge

Cold call victim forces telemarketers to pay him by using premium number
“I want cold calls,” says man previously annoyed by telemarketers.
by Jon Brodkin – Aug 29 2013, 11:29am EDT

*** begin quote ***

A British man fed up with cold calls from telemarketers set up a premium phone number in November 2011 and has made £300 by accepting calls and keeping the annoying marketers on the line as long as possible.
Lee Beaumont, who works at home in Leeds, UK, was getting calls at all times of the day. “I thought there must be a way to make money off these phone calls,” he told the BBC. He searched on Google and found a small company that charged him £10 (about $15.50) to set up an 0871 line (equivalent to a 900 line in the US), which forces people who call him to pay 10p per minute. Of that, he receives 7p (about 10.9¢).

*** end quote ***

Now there is one sharp cookie!

How do we set that up in the USA?

If the FCC really cared, they’d make this possible.

Yeah, right!

Woke up last night with an annoying slight spree throat?

Post-nasal drip?

Cold?

Snoring?

Who knows.

Always found that dill pickles relieved the “itch”.

Any basis for this finding?

Another Bank Breaks Into Wrong House, Repossesses Woman’s Belongings – But This Time the Mistake Was Much Worse | Video | TheBlaze.com

Sorry, but this is theft! And, aggression.

I’d pull out the stops.

If I was the prosecutor, I’d indict everyone in the repossession company for not divulging the bank.

I start with asset forfeiture on everyone involved.

I’d get a dozen L3 interns to dream up causes of actions.

Add a zero or two onto the person’s actual losses as punitive.

Sorry, but I have little tolerance for this.
