Donald Trump’s recent address to the joint session of Congress (emphasis on “joint” and “con”), while entertaining at times, offered no real updates on anything of substance. He’s a showman, and it was a show, which the Democrats unwittingly participated in. However, like no-alcohol beer, it was all bubbles and no buzz.
Trump made one quick reference to his administration’s ambitions in space that got the old brain juice flowing. His exact statement was, “We are going to lead humanity into space and plant the American flag on the planet Mars, and even far beyond.”

That’s the first time I’ve see a comprehensive list of the “technical” and “human” problems that need to be overcome.
May not happen in my lifetime, but it will in someone’s.
As an afficiando of Sci Fi, especially Heinlein, I believe it can be done.
I remember JFK promising a man on the moon. Impossible some said.

Teen arrested in random beating of man, 71, as NYPD seeks additional suspect in elderly assault

A 14-year-old boy was busted this week for allegedly slugging an elderly man in an unprovoked attack in Midtown, cops said.
The teen was nabbed at his home Wednesday and charged with assault in connection to the May 6 assault on a 71-year-old man on West 55th Street near Broadway, police said.
The boy approached the septuagenarian from behind just after 9 p.m., punched him in the face and pushed him to the ground, authorities said.
The pint-sized assailant took off, and the senior was taken to Mount Sinai West for medical treatment, cops said.
Days after the attack, police released a photo of the suspect, standing with one clenched fist, in hopes of tracking him down.

Little coward needs to be treated as an “adult”. Sorry but Heinlein had the correct take on “juvenile delinquents”.
“I told you that ‘juvenile delinquent’ is a contradiction in terms. ‘Delinquent’ means ‘failing in duty.’ But duty is an adult virtue—indeed a juvenile becomes an adult when, and only when, he acquires a knowledge of duty and embraces it as dearer than the self-love he was born with. There never was, there cannot be a ‘juvenile delinquent.’ But for every juvenile criminal there are always one or more adult delinquents—people of mature years who either do not know their duty, or who, knowing it, fail.” ― Robert A. Heinlein, Starship Troopers
This 14 year old is a “criminal” and should be treated as such.

“A soldier accepts personal responsibility for the safety of the body politic of which he is a member, defending it, if need be, with his life. The civilian does not.” — Lt. Col. Jean V. Dubois (Ret.) and student, p. 26 Starship Troopers (1959) by Robert A. Heinlein
This resonated with me. As a VietNam era vet, I realized that only vets should vote. I lost friends in the Republic of, had friends and relatives come back “different”, and even lost my best friend who went underground to avoid the draft.
Only vets should vote, because they UNDERSTAND (I’d use the Heinlein word ‘grok’) what it means to send young women and men in “harm’s way”. When politicians and bureaucrats vote for war, I’d hand them a rifle and say “OK, Pops, you go first!”

It’s Time For a City On the Moon by L. Neil Smith lneil@netzero.com
*** begin quote ***
In his wonderful, life-changing novel that he called The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, the late, great science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein (he also wrote Stranger in a Strange Land and The Puppet Masters) demonstrated the vital importance to national security (or just good old-fashioned peace, freedom, and prosperity) of an established American presence on the Moon. In that book, he had a culture of lovable convicts and exiles declare their independence by electrically launching boxcar-sized boulders at Earth, creating purely kinetic impacts that rivaled nuclear explosions in power. I’m not usually one to go looking for international trouble, but for the sake of our health and safety, if nothing else, consider: if those who conceive themselves to be America’s enemies have a monopoly on Lunar colonies, it could be a disaster. Just sing Randy Newman’s “Let’s Drop The Big One Now” to yourself under your breath and substitute Los Angeles and Chicago for London and Paris.
