“A soldier accepts personal responsibility for the safety of the body politic of which he is a member, defending it, if need be, with his life. The civilian does not.” — Lt. Col. Jean V. Dubois (Ret.) and student, p. 26 Starship Troopers (1959) by Robert A. Heinlein
This resonated with me. As a VietNam era vet, I realized that only vets should vote. I lost friends in the Republic of, had friends and relatives come back “different”, and even lost my best friend who went underground to avoid the draft.
Only vets should vote, because they UNDERSTAND (I’d use the Heinlein word ‘grok’) what it means to send young women and men in “harm’s way”. When politicians and bureaucrats vote for war, I’d hand them a rifle and say “OK, Pops, you go first!”
