Gerhard Wisnewski is a German writer of non-fiction books and articles. He writes in the German language and his books are widely read in the German-speaking countries. He has written a number of successful books, many of them dealing with what are popularly termed conspiracy theories. One of his recent books, entitled Das Titanic Attentat (“The Titanic Murder”), is about the sinking of the Titanic in April, 1912. Unlike some of his books, it is not available in English translation but is definitely worth reading if you know German.
According to the conventional version, the mighty but overconfident Titanic accidentally struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage from Europe to New York. The collision tore a hole in the ship’s hull and caused it to sink with a huge loss of life. For a long time, it was difficult to challenge this official version because the best evidence, the sunken ship itself, had permanently settled in one of the deepest areas of the Atlantic Ocean, too deep to be accessible to investigators. (Incidentally, if the Titanic had sunk just a few miles to the west of where it actually sank, it would have wound up in much shallower waters where it would have been possible, even in 1912, to get to the wreckage.) Advancements in technology, however, finally made it possible to reach the Titanic in 1985 and to photograph and otherwise examine the wreckage. The new evidence that has emerged from this and from other sources has prompted Wisnewski to rethink the traditional story and to raise some disturbing questions.

Advancements in deep sea technology are making it possible to probe more and more deeply into this mystery. In recent times, for example, investigators have started to focus their attention on the four-foot-high iron letters on the bow of the ship that spell out “Titanic.” From the preliminary examination of this lettering, it appears as though these letters were fastened on top of still other letters, suggesting that the ship may once have had another name. Two of the letters have fallen off the wreck and probably disappeared forever. Underneath these letters are the letters M and P, letters which could have helped to spell out “Olympic.” Unfortunately, the other letters are rather difficult to decipher and could be interpreted in any number of ways.
There are discrepancies between what we know of the ship on the bottom of the Atlantic and the Titanic. The former appears to have been painted twice, the first time in grey and the second time in black. We know that the Olympic was painted twice, but to the best of our knowledge, the Titanic was painted only once and in black. Also, the ship on the bottom of the Atlantic was outfitted with an elaborate system to facilitate the deployment of lifeboats. To the best of our knowledge, the Olympic had such a system but the Titanic never did.
As technology progresses, we may someday know the full story of the Titanic disaster. It goes without saying that if Gerhard Wisnewski’s suspicions turn out to be correct, the reputation of J.P. Morgan will be forever destroyed.

Black Asphalt lets its 25,000 users compile and share detailed data on private motorists—whether they’ve done anything wrong or not—including addresses, social security numbers, information from traffic stops or interrogations, searches, etc. Information is shared informally without official oversight, and many of the reports end up in federal fusion centers where they can be shared with law enforcement agencies at all levels.
Desert Snow encourages users to provide data about their traffic stops by offering rewards and incentives. The more data an officer enters, the more rewards he earns. Desert Snow also holds an annual competition to recognize officers who have seized the most contraband. Top earners (to borrow a term from The Sopranos) are honored at Desert Snow’s annual conference.
The system appears to work. According to The Washington Post, police officers affiliated with Desert Snow reported seizing $427 million from traffic stops over a five-year period. In fact, Desert Snow’s methods are so lucrative, company personnel have even gotten in on the act. Last year, the Caddo County, Oklahoma, district attorney’s office contracted with Desert Snow employees to conduct interdiction operations on state highways. Working with local police officers, Desert Snow employees seized more than $1 million over six months. The firm retained 25 percent of the haul under the contract terms. Fortunately, the scheme was shut down after a local judge got wind of it and threatened to jail the Desert Snow employees who were involved.

This seemed so natural from my early days at AT&T.
When I was being managed, my supervisors were evaluated on how well they “developed” me.
When I was promoted to “management”, a full 50% of my evaluation was on how “my” people were progressing towards THEIR stated goals. Note: Not my goals for them or even the company’s goals for them.
Then came Employee Retirement Income Security Act — ERISA!

As a young “fat old white guy injurer”, I was aware of the changing landscape when I was in ingineering skrule.
Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta Corporation were big Engineering firms. But, we were warned against going to work for them because they were rumored (later sued) for dumping engineers out the door every five years to hire younger and cheaper engineers.
Out of this came the ERISA and the “five year pension vesting” rule.
This set off the “turnstile effect”. Every five years, people would move on to better jobs regardless if they wanted to or not. Collect those pensions.
At the same time, corporations began to shift from “Personnel Departments” to “Human Resources”.
And people became as expendable as pencils and screw drivers.

Didn’t take very long for the “humans” being resourced to adopt an adversarial attitude towards their employers.
Took me a while to lose my AT&T trained behavior that I trusted my “leadership” to be my advocate.
That happened the first time I was “downsized” out of a job.
Luckily, I had the experience of taking a “golden handshake” from AT&T. So I dove right into the process. It didn’t hurt that they had to keep me on for six months to “transition” and “knowledge transfer”. (I learned from my exposure to the IEBW Union workers in NYC that one NEVER EVER tells anyone EVERYTHING that you know.)
After that experience, I never truly trusted a manager or a leader. Many of who were “good guys”, but one has to recognize that there are factors beyond their control. (Like the one job where the day I started, my new boss, his boss, and his boss’ boss were all nuked. For six weeks I was reporting to the CEO’s secretary with absolutely NOTHING to do.)
So, in my working career, “Corporate America” has morphed into “Crony Capitalism”, where politics, image, and political correctness have replaced results, honesty, and integrity.
It’s very sad,
I weep for the youngsters coming up behind us for the environment they are getting into.
Hence my constant preaching — save your money, don’t accumulate bad debt, be in your own business — which you are anyway — even if you’re a full time employee, and try to find 10 part-time jobs or 10 distinct income streams where the loss of any one doesn’t put you at risk of having to live in cardboard box.

This story isn’t to call attention to the many things Target did wrong, but rather to highlight the one thing they did right: They did not become victims of the Concorde Fallacy.
In 1956, the British and French governments, along with aircraft and engine manufacturers, began the process of building a supersonic airliner. From the start the Concorde was plagued by prohibitive budget overruns. In fact, long before the wheels came up on the first commercial flight in 1976, the partnership knew the venture would never sustain itself financially. And yet they couldn’t bring themselves to shut it down.
By the last Concorde flight in 2003, the Anglo/French misadventure had become so legendary that evolutionary biologists coined the term, “Concorde Fallacy,” as a metaphor for when sticking with a troubled project costs more than starting over with a new alternative.
Ego and sovereign pride by the Concorde partnership caused the willing suspension of economic reason. Plus they failed to apply the lesson of sunk costs, which is that, “Any decision to continue a financially unviable project shouldn’t be based on what has already been spent.” In a small business, it might sound like this, “We’ve got too much invested to stop,” or “We just need to work harder.”
Pride can be productive or it can be a problem. Consider this handy admonition a mentor once gave me that I have named the Concorde Question: “Do you have a fighting chance or just a chance to fight?”

What with its title, “The Tragic Decline of the American Military,” Atlantic Monthly’s January-February cover story at first blush appears to be a thoughtless pro-military screed. But in spite of that headline, and the cover asking “Why Does The Best Military in the World Keep Losing?” it isn’t a bad piece at all.
Author James Fallows isn’t making any edgy arguments here. He’s actually painfully pragmatic as he spells out the declining skills of military leadership due to politics. More interesting for readers of Antiwar.com, however, is Fallows mentioning the strange, thoughtless respect for the military that now permeates the American public.

The “young” easily buy into the nationalistic propaganda and “answer the nation’s call”.
Having done the oligarchy’s bidding and serving as “cannon fodder” for the military industrial complex that Ike warned us about, they return damaged.
(Remember the Prussian education system — that the USA imported hook, line, and sinker — had as its SOLE purpose was to create cannon fodder for the Army, willing morons for the factories, and useful idiots to vote for and be led by the elite!)
And, “the Nation” turns a collective “blind eye” to their situation.
Remember Heinlein’s Starship Troopers’ universe? One does not merely have the right to be a citizen and vote by virtue of what Heinlein called the mere accident of birth; rather, one has to earn this right through Federal Service that tested one’s ability and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good of the polity. Bet not a lot of vets would vote for all the undeclared wars the USA has been in since WW2?
That’s what “We, The Sheeple” have allowed the Gooferment’s politicians and bureaucrats to do in their name.
The response to this movie, and other of its ilk, is a recognition of exactly who the “bad guys” are in this morality play — the nation’s “leaders”.

That’s why deflate-gate and all the other petty “news” is created — to distract us.

Proposing more taxes and more spending is a loser. With the R’s in control of the House, I’d be ASTONISHED if any new or increase in taxes passes.
In actuality, the deficit and the debt as a percentage of GDP has improved slightly. No thanks to anything the Gooferment, politicians, or bureaucrats did.

The “unemployment rate” as pushed by the elite and the lapdog media is a joke. Look at the participation rate. Look at the disability rolls. Shadow Stats says that U6 is 23%. That’s one out of four territory. Black youth unemployment is 50%.

President Barack Obama will call on the new Republican-led Congress to raise taxes on investments and inherited property and to create or expand a range of tax breaks for middle-income families, laying out an opening position in a debate over taxation that both parties see as a potential area of compromise.

The U.S. Justice Department secretly kept a database of U.S. calls to and from foreign countries for more than a decade, according to a new court filing and officials familiar with the program.
The revelation of another secret government database storing records of Americans’ calls came in a filing in the case of a man accused of conspiring to unlawfully export electronic goods to Iran. As the short-term discouraged workers roll over into long-term discouraged status, they move into the ShadowStats measure, where they remain. Aside from attrition, they are not defined out of existence for political convenience, hence the longer-term divergence between the various unemployment rates. Further detail is discussed in the Reporting Detail section. The resulting difference here is between a headline December 2014 unemployment rates of 5.6% (U.3) and 23.0% (ShadowStats).
