POLITICAL: How to fix Obama / SCOTUS — care!

FROM WSJ

No Easy Cure
Congress has begun the work of replacing the Affordable Care Act, and that means lawmakers will soon face the thorny dilemma that confronts every effort to overhaul health insurance: Sick people are expensive to cover, and someone has to pay. The 2010 health law forced insurers to sell coverage to anyone, at the same price, regardless of their risk of incurring big claims. That provision was popular. Not so were rules requiring nearly everyone to have insurance, and higher premiums for healthy people to subsidize the costs of the sick. If policyholders don’t pick up the tab, who will? The available options all have downsides. Mr. Trump and GOP leaders on Capitol Hill pledged this week to move swiftly to not only repeal but also replace the Affordable Care Act, but it will be a difficult promise to keep.

*** begin quote ***

Proposal #1: Restore natural prices and make them visible to patients. This will enable consumer control, foster competition, increase supply, and reduce costs.
Proposal #2: Repeal Obamacare in its entirety before considering legislation to replace it.
Proposal #3: Politicians should make all sickness and wellness expenditures tax deductible, including insurance premiums and preventive measures, such as supplements and fitness clubs.
Proposal #4: Revive true health insurance (and make it affordable too) by removing all the expensive mandates imposed by Obamacare and the states.
Proposal #5: Outlaw monopolistic “certificates of need.”
Proposal #6: End punitive damages that enrich lawyers with no compensating health benefit.
Proposal #7: Make the FDA advisory, not dictatorial.
Proposal #8: Restrict the FDA to certifying safety only.
Proposal #9: End the FDA’s power to regulate generic drug factories.
Proposal #10: Limit pharmaceutical patent protection to the recovery of research costs.
Proposal #11: Remove redundant licensing requirements.
Proposal #12: Incentivize the frugal use of medical services by creating the equivalent of Medicaid and Medicare HSAs.
Proposal #13: Increase co-pays for Medicare and Medicaid patients.
Proposal #14: Reduce doctor visits by ending the need for prescriptions.
Proposal #15: The State should stop defining dietary guidelines.
Proposal #16: Create an exchange for pro-bono services and voluntary funding.
Proposal #17: Provide a 100% tax credit to anyone who pays for an indigent person’s healthcare expenses.
Proposal #18: Make Medicare a safety net rather than a dragnet.
Proposal #19: Make indigent access to the tax-funded safety net contingent on a history of personal responsibility.
Proposal #20: Create a schedule to devolve Medicare and Medicaid to the states or localities.

HEALTH: Smallpox And Columbian Exchange

Smallpox And Columbian Exchange

*** begin quote ***

Smallpox can be spread by bodily fluids or objects that have been contaminated. To date, it is the only disease that has been eradicated.

In the 1500s, during the Columbian Exchange between Europe and the New World, smallpox devastated Native inhabitants, killing up to 90 percent of the population. This disease was also used as a method for biological warfare by European explorers who were colonizing the Americas. Native populations had no built up immunity to the diseases that Europeans brought over and were torn apart by the virus. Entire civilizations were wiped out, taking with them cultures, forms of art, and languages that are now lost forever.

I focused on the “only disease that has been eradicated”.

That’s an interesting assertion.

What about polio?

Benefits of Nuts for Stroke Prevention
Written by: Michael Greger M.D. FACLM on January 10th, 2017

*** begin quote ***

In the PREDIMED study, from the Spanish “PREvencio ́n con DIeta MEDiterranea,” a whopping 7,447 patients were randomized into three groups. These were folks at high risk for a heart attack, about half were obese, diabetic and most had high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but they had not yet had their first heart attack or stroke. A third were told to eat a Mediterranean diet and given a free quart of extra virgin olive oil every week. The second group were told to eat a Mediterranean diet and given a half pound of free nuts every week, and the last third were told to follow the American Heart Association guidelines and reduce their fat intake. No portion control or exercise advice was given, and they were followed for about five years. The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

*** and ***

Same with dying from a heart attack or stroke or from any cause—but, those in the olive oil and especially the nut group had significantly fewer strokes. All three groups were eating stroke-promoting diets; some people in all three groups had  strokes after eating these diets for years, and so ideally we’d choose diets that can stop or reverse the disease process, but the diet with added extra virgin olive oil caused about a third fewer strokes, and adding nuts seemed to cut their stroke risk nearly in half. If this worked as well in the general population, in the U.S. alone that would mean preventing 89,000 strokes a year. That’s would be like ten strokes an hour around the clock prevented simply by adding half an ounce of nuts to one’s daily diet.

*** end quote ***

BOTTOM LINE: Eat 1 ounce of nuts every day.

Seems like a simple Rx.

Inside Mississippi’s Asset Forfeiture Extortion Racket
State narcotics police seized $4 million in cash—as well as couches, comics, and 18-wheelers—through asset forfeiture in 2015.
C.J. Ciaramella | Jan. 5, 2017 10:00 am

*** begin quote ***

“We’re completely in the dark on how pervasive the practice really is,” says Blake Feldman, an advocacy coordinator at the Mississippi ACLU. “Pretty much the default mindset is nobody should be overseeing any law enforcement. A big concern will be if the required tracking and reporting is going to be enforced, or if it will be a shallow gesture.”

In recent years, there has been bipartisan momentum in states across the U.S. to roll back civil asset forfeiture laws, which allow police to seize property without convicting or even charging the owner with a crime. Mississippi is no different. According to an April poll of Mississippi voters conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research, 88 percent of voters oppose civil forfeiture, including 89 percent of Republican voters.

Reason reached current Hinds County Attorney Claire Baker to ask about the couch seizure, as well as the debate in the state over asset forfeiture.

“There’s been a move to crack down on forfeitures, and I get that,” Baker says. “Mississippi law is wide open as far as forfeiture goes.”

*** end quote ***

There has to be reform.

If we eliminate the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs”, a lot of this non-sense will stop.

Even before that happens, the forfeiture law needs to change dramatically.

(1) Nothing is taken without a conviction.

(2) The Gooferment’s claim can’t be taken on face value.

(3) The actual owners, like parents, shouldn’t be penalized for something some one else does.

Argh!

It’s all about “revenue collection”; not solving or preventing “crimes” against real victims.

Obvious, the police and judicial complex are over-funded.

The Secret, Dangerous World of Venezuelan Bitcoin Mining
How cryptocurrency is turning socialism against itself
Jim Epstein from the January 2017 issue

*** begin quote ***

Four years ago, Alberto’s career prospects were bleak. The 23-year-old Venezuelan had just graduated from college with a degree in computer science, but his nation’s economy was already shredded by 13 years of socialism.

“There were job opportunities, but they paid like $20 a month, and we were used to traveling and buying things from abroad so we couldn’t settle for that,” his friend Luis recalls. Alberto and Luis—whose names have been changed for their own safety—teamed up to start a clothing business, but the venture floundered.

Then Alberto discovered bitcoin mining.

*** and ***

But the main factor driving Venezuelans to take up bitcoin mining is a price control put in place by the socialist government: Electricity is virtually free.

Bitcoin mining requires a lot of computer processing power, which in turn requires a lot of electricity. In most of the world, utility bills eat into the cost of mining. In places where energy prices are high, it can even be a losing proposition. But in Venezuela, the government has turned bitcoin mining into something akin to owning a home mint.

Guess the Gooferment there never figure this one out!

POLITICAL: The FDA is obsolete; make it optional

OPINION  REVIEW & OUTLOOK
The FDA’s Rigged Drug Committees
A case study in how the agency gets the advice it wants to hear.
Updated Dec. 30, 2016 7:15 p.m. ET

*** begin quote ***

Among the Republican priorities in 2017 should be dismantling a culture of bureaucratic control at the Food and Drug Administration that poisons innovation and costs lives. Here’s an idea: Update part of the approval process that was patient zero for distorting data on a drug for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

We’ve reported on the drama over eteplirsen, which FDA approved in September and is now marketed as Exondys 51 by Sarepta Therapeutics. Midlevel bureaucrats have since disparaged the therapy in public, and some insurers are denying coverage. Much of the confusion results from an April show trial known as an advisory committee meeting. A process that is supposed to provide independent advice to the FDA instead became a venue to mislead a panel of nonexperts—and the public—about the drug’s efficacy.

*** end quote ***

It’s been demonstrated that the FDA is a tool of Big Pharma. There’s that old revolving door between being a regulator and being regulated.

Why can’t the FDA be an optional player. Let the doctors counsel patients. It’s the patients that have to decide.

Argh!

One
additional feature of the flyover was the use of pink smoke forcancer awareness.

MY RESPONSE

K — I don’t use his name; he’s not worth learning to spell it — is merely exercising his rights and getting PR points with the illiterates. (imho) I’d prefer to ignore him and let him fade away into obscurity.

After we found that the Gooferment was paying the NFL to “honor the troops”, I became hostile to these displays. Not that I am anti-American or don’t want the troops home, but it’s pro-war propaganda worthy of Goebbels’ Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda!!!! (I feel strongly about that one.)

I have great respect for the voluntary flyover since that represents authentic American patriotism. Untainted by Big Gooferment propaganda.

Pink smoke to fight cancer just makes me think of the FDA and regulatory capture by Big Pharma. When the March of Dime focused on polio, the American public rallied and it was done. Voluntarily. Of course, all those high paid execs couldn’t be out of a job, so they moved on to an amorphous enemy — birth defects. And the gravy train continued.

Sorry to rain on your parade but I am Cynic in the tradition of Diogenes and I insist on looking behind the curtain. Or maybe a Stoic like Marcus Aurelius, who recognized that the problems always are inside of man.

Argh!

Thanks for great blog post fodder.

OK, I’m a sucker for apps, phones, and all technology gadgets and tchotchkes (NB: I’ve been criticized all to often for using big and or strange words so now I am linking to their meaning. OK?) (NB: A “gadget” becomes a “tchotchke” when it: (a) doesn’t work as advertised; (b) breaks; (c) gets purplanted by a better gadget; or (d) I lose a part of it — usually the power supply. I have an old digital video camera waiting for me to find the power cord to it.)

I read about the app somewhere — I’d have thought Google would let me know about it … … personally — and downloaded it BECAUSE I have a ton of old framed pictures that I was considering HOW to digitize. It’d be a lot work to take them out of the frame — if they’d survive that — scan them and put them back.

So this holiday, I tried it on two framed pictures.

“Forests aren’t simply collections of trees, they’re complex systems with hubs and networks that overlap and connect trees and allow them to communicate,” says Simard. While this can make forests resilient, it also makes them vulnerable.

“You can take out one or two mother trees, but there comes a tipping point where a massive disturbance can affect hydrological cycles, degrade wildlife habitat, and emit greenhouse gases back into the atmosphere, which creates more disturbance and more tree diebacks,” she explains.

Grandma Got Run Over by Obama: SSA Finalizes New Gun Prohibition Rule
On Monday, Barack Obama’s Social Security Administration (SSA) issued the final version of a rule that will doom tens of thousands of law-abiding (and vulnerable) disability insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients to a loss of Second Amendment rights under the guise of re-characterizing them as “mental defectives.” The SSA, for the first time in its history, will be coopted into the federal government’s gun control apparatus, effectively requiring Social Security applicants to weigh their need for benefits against their fundamental rights when applying for assistance based on mental health problems.

All the Body Parts You Can Donate to a Good Cause
Beth Skwarecki Tuesday 10:00am Filed to: BODY HACKS

*** begin quote ***

Bone Marrow

Who needs it? People with leukemias and lymphomas, bone marrow diseases, and immune system disorders like SCID may need a bone marrow transplant. They can’t just use any bone marrow, either: the donor’s tissue type has to match the recipient’s. Most patients who need a transplant can’t find a family member whose tissue type is a close enough match to allow them to donate. That’s why registries are so important—maybe you are someone’s match.

Who can donate? Guidelines for who can donate bone marrow are similar to those for donating blood. In addition, you have to be a good tissue match for the person who needs bone marrow. People are most likely to match with someone else from their racial or ethnic background, so registries especially need people whose heritage is African, Latino, Native American, Asian, or mixed race. Most doctors will request a donor who is under 45 years old, since younger people’s cells make for more successful transplants.

How to donate: Sign up for the National Marrow Donor Program. As part of the registration process, you will swab your cheek and send the swab for testing. This is how they know what tissue type you are. Once you are on the registry, there’s about a 1 in 500 chance that you will end up being somebody’s marrow donor.

There are two ways you might be asked to donate. The older method is a surgery where you get a giant needle in your hip. It’s great for medical TV, but not very common anymore. These days it’s more likely that you will get five daily injections of a medication called filgrastim that causes your bone marrow to release stem cells into your blood. When you donate, a machine will spend several hours filtering those cells out of your blood. In the meantime you can watch movies and chat with friends. If you’ve been put off of donating bone marrow because you were afraid it was a huge, painful needle, don’t be.

*** end quote ***

What better way to celebrate the Christmas season?

Helping your fellow human being.

Will it hurt? Maybe. But imagine how it would be to be on the other side of it. Needing but not having a donor.

Wish I was under 45.

Maybe because Our Girl Frau Reinke passed away from an unknown blood disease makes this more impact with me.

p.s., I’m a platelet and organ donor. (Platelet donations is a two hour process where, I swear, they remove them from your butt via a handy vein. I know it comes from one’s butt because that’s the only part of me that hurts. And, no, I am NOT supine on my wallet, funny people!)

Give life.
