SOFTWARE: Google’s PhotoScan app RECOMMENDED

“Get the photo scanner from the future”

# – # – # – # – #

OK, I’m a sucker for apps, phones, and all technology gadgets and tchotchkes (NB: I’ve been criticized all to often for using big and or strange words so now I am linking to their meaning. OK?) (NB: A “gadget” becomes a “tchotchke” when it: (a) doesn’t work as advertised; (b) breaks; (c) gets purplanted by a better gadget; or (d) I lose a part of it — usually the power supply. I have an old digital video camera waiting for me to find the power cord to it.)

I read about the app somewhere — I’d have thought Google would let me know about it … … personally — and downloaded it BECAUSE I have a ton of old framed pictures that I was considering HOW to digitize. It’d be a lot work to take them out of the frame — if they’d survive that — scan them and put them back.

So this holiday, I tried it on two framed pictures.

Judge for yourself the results.

RANT: Kvetch from long ago and far away

Friday, December 23, 2016

Sorry to say, I haven’t written this. It was of interest to me at the disinterest in my power problems by employees of the various companies to who I turned to for help. (I was paying and not asking for charity.) Special excoriation for Dell, Sams Club, WalMark, OfficeDepot, Staples, the two 24 hour laptop repair firms in Vegas, and the pawn shop (it advertised computers, but had none). The only bright spot was Brookstones. Their EWR employee sold me something he thought would work (it didn’t) but correctly told me of their return policy. Their LAS employee accepted the return with no problem and showed me what I should have been sold. She made an interesting observation that the if the EWR site didn’t have the CORRECT one, he could have checked with the LAS site and they would have had it for me when I arrived. I intended to compliment them on that idea. The young women in Vegas is a gem. Sigh, now I have to try to make the midnight deadline for Jasper Jottings.

It’s Time to Leave Yahoo: How to Quit and Move to Gmail Right Now
Ben Stegner  December 20, 2016

*** begin quote ***

For the second time in recent months, Yahoo has been hit with a security breach. This time, Yahoo announced that hackers stole details from a billion accounts in August 2013.

*** end quote ***

I’m not a fan of giving control of your email to anyone even GMAIL.

That being said you should leave Yahoo. It’s going the way of Blackberry.

May I suggest that you have your own domain? The common wisdom, or is that common whizdumb, is to own your own name as a domain name. I own “reinke.cc”. (I like saying “sea sea me at reinke.cc”! me@reinke.cc will actually work!) It gives one quite a bit of control. And, it’s very cheap.

I know three solutions at 15$/year using wordpressdotcom with gmail, 25$/year email only with 1and1, and 60$/year for domain+email+webspace also at 1and1. My point is not that you should use 1and1. http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=9113251 I could care less which one you use.

It’s that getting on to your own domain with email is cheap and easy. And, it’s not hotmail, yahoo, or gmail. It IS your own “personal brand”.

I use my own domain to receive mail and GMAIL to “handle it”.

Works very nicely.

YMMV. FWIW.

SOFTWARE: How useless is the IOS Wallet App?

Thursday, December 8, 2016

Apple Wallet (referred to as simply Wallet) is an application in Apple’s iOS (previously known as Passbook in iOS 6 to iOS 8) that allows users to store coupons, boarding passes, event tickets, store cards and, starting with iOS 8.1, credit cards, loyalty cards, and debit cards via Apple Pay.

TECHNOLOGY: Tom Woods reports that academia and old media is ignored

Saturday, November 12, 2016

*** begin quote ***

I’m just Mr. Good News lately.

This week I reported on falling profits at the New York Times, as well as my car giveaway (I’m giving away a 2017 Kia Soul, as you know from yesterday’s email).

And today it’s this:

American academics have zero impact on anything.

Five different people sent me an article on this today. It made me happy.

American academia is dominated by left-liberalism. Some good work is done. Lots of forgettable, insignificant, or insane work is done.

And most of it, thank heavens, is not read.

Some 82 percent of articles in professional humanities journals have not been cited even once, ever.

It’s estimated that the typical academic journal article is read by no more than 10 people. In some fields, that’s actually a vast overestimate.

As academia has become more and more isolated from the normal experiences of regular Americans, so too have professors begun to offer fewer and fewer policy recommendations.

In the 1930s and 1940s, 20 percent of articles in the American Political Science Review focused on policy recommendations. Now 0.3 percent do.

And that’s all to the good, if you ask me.

The New York Times is hemorrhaging ad revenue, and nobody is listening to the left-liberal academic echo chamber.

Now go celebrate.

Tom Woods

HARDWARE: My first night with a BPAP machine

Sunday, October 30, 2016

For those that know me, I don’t sleep well. And, evidently, I was getting worse.

I bought a FITBIT Surge for the “sleep stats” it would give me. Being an ingineer, I like “evidence based” decisions.

The initial results were troubling — 100+ steps in my sleep, terrible awake / restless numbers, and the “heart rate” was in the 80 to 120 range. The pattern continued.

FITBIT 1 1FITBIT 1

So off to the doc I went.

After an initial visit and screening, a sleep study was ordered.

(Giant PIA)

That reported that I had very bad sleep apnea where I was over “60”. That meant I was breathing 60+ times per hour. (That’s scary!)

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sleep-apnea/basics/definition/con-20020286

So a machine was ordered.

I was pretty skeptical until a friend related her relative’s experience — untreated, diagnosed later with a n enlarged heart due to the struggle to supply oxygenated blood to the body, he went on to heart problems with a long list of drugs, complications, and hospitalizations, leading to eventual death from a heart attack.

That got my attention.

So, what were my “results” from the first night?

2016 10Oct 27 FITBIT 12016 10Oct 27 FITBIT 2

I’d say that was a dramatic improvement.

I’d agree that having a “headset on your nose” is a “pain in the a double q”, but it seems worthwhile.

SO, for those that snore, here’s some anecdotal evidence that you should look into it further.

SOFTWARE: New release of Portable Software/USB for Windoze

Monday, October 3, 2016

https://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/editorial/?source=psp

Portable software for USB, portable, and cloud drives

Brought to you by: chriswombatcritternycmarkomlm

Editor’s ReviewRead User Reviews

PortableApps is an open source, application launcher that you install directly to your USB or cloud drive and use on any PC. You can download hundreds of portable applications from the PortableApps integrated directory, like Firefox, Skype, and more. This means you take your browser with your bookmarks and extensions, your office suite, your photo editor, your music collection, your games, your development tools, and more with you everywhere you go. And because everything stays on your drive, every PC becomes your PC. Additional features include integrated backup, interface themes, a search option, support for personal files, favorites and more.

PortableApps.com at a Glance

It took a few minutes to install the PortableApps Platform, and several more to install six apps including ClamWin, Firefox, GIMP, KeePass, Skype, and Stellarium. To start, we launched the heavyweight GIMP without a hitch, while each additional app opened just as quickly. The idea of carrying apps around on a USB seems plausible but the idea of loading the PortableApps Platform to Dropbox, or the like, seems like an even better idea. So, without further adieu, consider trying the PortableApps Platform, especially if you’ve been thinking about the best way to take your apps for a joy ride.

Product Details

Here is a detailed breakdown of PortableApps’ features:

  • Take your apps everywhere—PortableApps lets you carry all your favorite apps on a portable device or cloud drive and use them on any PC.
  • Use a portable device, cloud directory, or local drive—The PortableApps Platform comes with a smart installer that easily installs your environment to a portable device, a cloud drive (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), or a local PC, so you can safely back up data to the cloud.
  • Quickly find and install apps—PortableApps has a built-in app store that lists apps by category, title, or new and recently updated so you can install the apps you want with just a few clicks. And there’s no download limit.
  • Easily organize apps—Grow and organize your app collection with folders that group them automatically or as you see fit. Pick favorites and have the menu learn what to keep up front and center. Or use the search to find what you’re looking for.
  • Easily update apps—When a new security fix for your browser is released or a new feature in your favorite game is available, the PortableApps Updater automatically lets you know. Just click a button and the updates are downloaded and installed without messing up your settings and saved files.
  • Personalize your app menu—With a dozen bundled themes, each with a rainbow of color selections, the PortableApps Platform lets you pick a different look every day for months and never have the same menu twice.
  • Take your fonts along too—The PortableApps Platform supports the ability to carry fonts on your portable device and use them with your portable software without needing to install them on the local machine.
  • Advanced Features—The PortableApps Platform has the power and the options to work the way you want. And if there’s something we haven’t added that you’d like to see, just ask in the forums. We add new features every month!

TECHNOLOGY: Comcast service plans — worthless according to WA

Washington state sues Comcast, says it sold near-worthless service plans
Comcast defends $5-per-month service plans, will fight $100 million lawsuit.
JON BRODKIN – 8/1/2016, 1:42 PM

*** begin quote ***

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson today announced a $100 million consumer protection lawsuit against Comcast, alleging that the nation’s biggest cable company “engag[ed] in a pattern of deceptive practices constituting more than 1.8 million individual violations of the Washington Consumer Protection Act.” Comcast’s conduct affected about 500,000 customers who purchased service protection plans in Washington, Ferguson said.

*** end quote ***

It’s amazing that corporation would be so … … rapacious … …  as to sell basically worthless service plans.

Where’s the FCC and the other 49 states?

And Comcast can’t be the only one.

How about these “extended warranty” products? Where three years equals the cost of the product!

Makes me think that the product is so poorly built that it won’t last three years.

Argh!

That’s why I advocate for chromebook for the average User. Something goes wrong, buy a new one. It’s so cheap. Of the 8 that I am aware of the only failure was from a wine spill over it. My oldest is 4 years old (I think) and has only barfed  up the OS once requiring a reload. (So now all the chromebooks I support have the rescue USB velcroed to the power cord.)

That’s what technology and technology offerings should be like — how Western Electric used to make telephone handsets.

Sigh!

TECHNOLOGY: SSA goes to two factor authentication

Wednesday, August 3, 2016

BY EMAIL

Interesting that the industry is moving AWAY from cell phones as a form of two factor authentication.

Clearly, there is a spectrum of added risks that may NEGATE this additional control.

# – # – # – # – #

Starting in August 2016, Social Security is adding a new step to protect your privacy as a my Social Security user.  This new requirement is the result of an executive order for federal agencies to provide more secure authentication for their online services. Any agency that provides online access to a customer’s personal information must use multifactor authentication.

When you sign in at ssa.gov/myaccount with your username and password, we will ask you to add your text-enabled cell phone number.  The purpose of providing your cell phone number is that, each time you log in to your account with your username and password, we will send you a one-time security code you must also enter to log in successfully to your account.

Each time you sign into your account, you will complete two steps:

  • Step 1:  Enter your username and password.
  • Step 2:  Enter the security code we text to your cell phone (cell phone provider’s text message and data rates may apply).

The process of using a one-time security code in addition to a username and password is one form of “multifactor authentication,” which means we are using more than one method to make sure you are the actual owner of your account.

If you do not have a text-enabled cell phone or you do not wish to provide your cell phone number, you will not be able to access your my Social Security account.

If you are unable or choose not to use my Social Security, there are other ways you can contact us.  To learn more, please review the Frequently Asked Questions found here.

PUZZLING OUT AN 80S PUZZLE TOY
by: Gerrit Coetzee
June 29, 2016

*** begin quote ***

… looks back a time in the 80s when kids would learn by answering the questions to quizzes on their “TOMY Teacher,” or, “Sears Quiz-A-Tron”. There’s a bit of a conundrum with this toy. How did it know which answers were correct. Chip memory of any kind wasn’t the kind of thing you’d sweep into the dust bin if you had extras like it is now; it was expensive.

To use the toy, the child would place the notebook in the plastic frame on the device. They’d open the page with the quiz they would like to take. Printed in the upper left hand corner were three colored squares. There was a matching set of colored buttons on the device. They’d press the corresponding buttons in order from top to bottom and then the machine would magically know which answers on the quiz were correct.

*** end quote ***

If it looks too good to be true, then there is a hidden trick somewhere.

I found this entertaining!

Frequently Asked Questions

I just purchased an X2 card, why isn’t it supported?

Eye-Fi began phasing out sales of the X2 product line in 2012.  The last version produced by the company were sold through authorized channels in the United States in March, 2015.  Although Eye-Fi stopped shipments of these products via authorized channels, some units were still available from third party sellers and after-market resellers.  Eye-Fi’s warranty period for the affected products purchased through our authorized channels has expired.

Will I still be able to create an Eye-Fi Center account after September 16th?

No, you will not be able to create an Eye-Fi Center account or log in to an existing Eye-Fi Center account.

Can I still download and install Eye-Fi Center applications after September 16th?

The Eye-Fi Center applications can be installed, but since account creation and logging in will no longer work, these applications will not be functional.

Will I be able to use my Eye-Fi 1.0 card after September 16, 2016?

Certain functions, such as Direct Mode, may not be directly impacted by our end of life process. If you wish to try Direct Mode you will need to set it up  prior to the end of life date. You can find instructions on how to set up direct mode here for Android and here for iOS. Please note that while Direct Mode may not be directly affected, Eye-Fi applications will no longer be updated for operating system updates, and their functionality is not guaranteed – additionally, no support will be provided either for the setup or functionality of Direct Mode. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT DIRECT MODE CONFIGURATIONS WILL CONTINUE FUNCTIONING AFTER THE SEPTEMBER 16, 2016 SHUT DOWN.

For an extended FAQ, please see here.

TECHNOLOGY: Thinking about car technology?

Saturday, June 25, 2016

The other day, we were stopped behind a fairly new truck and my passenger noted that their right rear brake light was out. Because she was with me, and the conditions were fortuitous, we were able to pull up alongside and tell the woman driver her light was out.

That got me to thinking.

(1) If it was just the woman alone, would I have talked to her. (Not very likely. I don’t like people.)

(2) How can one check one’s own break lights? (It’s not a one person job. Well maybe one person and large mirror hung on your back garage wall.)

(3) The current trend is automating the car (i.e., parks itself; stops itself; blind spots itself). What about the lights. (We need an idiot light for the lights?)

(4) I’m not sure I like the idea of the car stopping automagically. (I envision a bad guy stopping a woman alone on a dark road and the car won’t the bastard over!)

Guess I won’t be buying a new car soon. (But I do like my Prius’ adaptive cruise control; sweet!)

Man accidentally ‘deletes his entire company’ with one line of bad code‘
I feel sorry to say that your company is now essentially dead,’ one person on a coding forum advised Marco Marsala
Andrew Griffin @_andrew_griffin 15 minutes  ago

A man appears to have deleted his entire company with one mistaken piece of code.

By accidentally telling his computer to delete everything in his servers, hosting provider Marco Marsala has seemingly removed all trace of his company and the websites that he looks after for his customers.

Mr Marsala wrote on a forum for server experts that he was now stuck after having accidentally run destructive code on his own computers. But far from advising them how to fix it, most experts informed him that he had just accidentally deleted the data of his company and its clients, and in so doing had probably destroyed his entire company with just one line of code.

So where are your backups?

I don’t care what type of User you are. I don’t care if you are a “corporate drone”. I don’t care if you just “play games”. I don’t care if you just use your computer or your phone for notes.

Where are your backups?

When the computer flames, the service provider goes bust, or the Gooferment shuts you down … …

… … … what will you do?

“Corporate drones” think they are protected by a corporate system. What happens if it just loses YOUR specific work? How’s your annual appraisal going to look?

“Gamers” can just rebut all their games and replay for hours to get where they are today.

“Note takers” can just “forget” every note they’ve taken.

Argh!

Wake up people.

Add emergency-contact info to your iPhone lock screen
A simple tweak to your existing wallpaper might just save your life — or at least help recover a lost phone.

The reason we password-protect our phones is simple: If it gets stolen, the thief can’t access all our data. But there’s a flipside: If your phone is lost, or you’ve been injured and someone is trying to call your family, there’s no way to access your ICE (In Case of Emergency) info.

LINKEDIN: “Save to Contacts” feature removed silently

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

Note: As part of our ongoing efforts to invest our resources in building a better LinkedIn, we’re retiring the Save to Contacts feature on February 25, 2016. You’ll still access all of the Contacts you’ve previously saved by going to your Connections list, choosing the Filter By Tag option, and selecting the Saved_Contacts tag.

*** end quote ***

I used this feature a lot.

It just disappeared.

Hence I’m dropping the premium feature of LinkedIn.

Sad, when these “services” go rogue.

Guess they don’t need my money!

Too bad. Argh!

HARDWARE: Maybe a fix for WiFi’s poor performance?

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

http://fortune.com/2016/02/23/eero-home-networking-review/

Struggle with Wi-Fi speeds and coverage in your home? Eero has the answer.

*** begin quote ***

A year ago, startup Eero surfaced with a bold claim: It had developed a product that would fix Wi-Fi in our homes. Using a series of small white boxes, Eero would create a smart network capable of providing a consistent connection to Wi-Fi hungry devices throughout your home.

Steep price for a better experience.

One thing is for sure the current crop of wireless routers provided by ISPs are all no bargain.

I have FIOS, Optimum, and TWC. Gal pal has another optimum setup.

Performance is AT BEST less than perfect; in Gal Pal’s case almost unusable.

She is much less demanding and much more tolerant of the flaws than I am.

My standard is I pay to use it; not work around it, debug it, and reset things.

Argh!

Maybe I should go back to IT leadership as a career. At least, I might be able to fix the Customer experience?

HARDWARE: iPhone Power Cord pet peeve

iPhone Power Cord Protection With Shrink Tubing

*** begin quote ***

The iPhone is a significant investment but the power cord is surprisingly vulnerable to kinks and tears. To protect against this I applied a two inch length of shrink tubing. This serves to reinforce the collar.

*** end quote ***

Pet peeve.

Every Apple cord has this type of damage.

(Except for the brand new one I have that I haven’t used yet. Argh!)

More than their resistance to break their security, how about they put another penny in to the cords?

Double Argh!
