Two ideas:
(1) there is usually a hole for “emergency open”. You mae need a magnifying glass and an unbent paper clip to insert.
(2) sometimes the CD doesn’t get flat on the “turntable”. I’ve found that inverting it and then back can sometimes free it. Also, a gentle washing machine agitation — 5 or 10 minutes — just put it on the machines when they cycle. :-) It sometimes will let the cd reset in the “tray”.
Just some things that I’ve done.
BTW the disk and the drive are probably toast. When it attempts to force the drawer open, it knocks the “heads” out of line.
Hope this helps,
fjohn

A Closer Look at Google Public DNS
Elise Ackerman, Contributor
*** begin quote ***
What role has Google played in the DNS ecosystem? Do you see them as a competitor or a partner?
Google has helped raise the importance of DNS above the network engineering community, which has been really good. They’ve also worked with us to advance the state of the art for DNS performance, something we’ve really enjoyed working with them to make happen. It’s not so much competition as it is choice in the market. If they started defaulting Chrome to use Google DNS, I think that’s something we would take issue with, but for now, we like the idea of people using a DNS other than their ISPs, that’s a good idea for a lot of reasons.
What are some of those reasons?
I like the idea of separation of services. ISPs provide a pipe. Other vendors provide security. Other vendors provide email. When one party controls all the services, it’s a “synergy” for the company, but rarely for the consumer. With DNS in particular, there are performance and security benefits that third party DNS providers offer that ISPs aren’t incentivized to do since DNS is a cost-center for them, and a profit-center for us.
*** and ***
I think anything which promotes heterogeneity on the Internet promotes stability. Diversity in services, service providers, and separating the layers of the networking stack are all important. Your ISP no longer provides you email because everyone either uses their own or has an account with Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo mail. The same way people unbundled their email from their ISP, I think they should do with their DNS. Separation of services has been a long-standing best practice in the security community, and it applies now more than ever. In that vein, I’ll reiterate my view that I think Google controlling search, the browser, and the network or DNS layer is a dangerous trifecta that the consumer will probably be best served avoiding. I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.
*** end quote ***
I’ve been a fan of separation of duties.
ISP EMAIL has always been a trap for their Customers. That “customer@isp.net” is the property of the ISP; not the Customer. Once you give that out to enough people you’re locked in.
Why not use a DNS service that has an incentive to be loyal to you?
Since finding OPENDNS, I have not had an DNS outages. I know that VERIZON, COMCAST, and GOOGLE have had outages.
Easy decision fmpov.

Dear DYMO Customer,
We emailed you a few weeks ago that we were finalizing a solution to replace CardScan At Your ServiceTM. We selected a powerful comprehensive solution provided by ScanBiz Mobile Solutions and consists of two parts: the ScanBizCards Web Sync web-based card management application and the ScanBizCards mobile app.
How Does It Work?
| Step 1: |
|
Sign up for a Web Sync account at www.scanbizcards.com/dymo. |
| Step 2: |
|
Access your new account at www.scanbizcards.com/websync from the desktop where you are running the CardScan application. |
| Step 3: |
|
Look under the Account tab for an “Upload CardScan File” link. Use this link to upload your latest CardScan Database (.CDB) file. |
| Step 4: |
|
Your CDB will be processed to create all required cards in your Web Sync account. Note: the process will start soon but may take several hours to complete. During that time you may access cards already uploaded. |
| Step 5: |
|
(optional) Download the ScanBizCards mobile app and sign in with your Web Sync account (more info below). |
Web-Based Features (Web Sync)
| • |
|
Full migration of all CardScan contact information including card images (both front and back), categories, notes and all data fields. |
| • |
|
Ability to continue using the CardScan desktop application to scan cards-just periodically re-upload the .CDB file to synchronize your Web Sync account with the latest changes. Note: faster and more integrated solutions will be provided in the future. |
| • |
|
Edit on the web: no matter where you are, you will have easy access to your entire library of contacts but also efficiently edit, organize, share, export to Outlook®-and much more-right from your web browser! |
| • |
|
Export cards to Microsoft® Excel, request human transcription of difficult-to-scan cards and view contacts organized geographically on a map. |
| • |
|
A demo Web Sync account is available at www.scanbizcards.com/webdemo. |
Mobile Apps You can choose to install the companion ScanBizCards mobile app for the iPhone®/iPad® or AndroidTM phones or tablets, or Windows® Phone. As soon as you sign into the mobile app with your Web Sync account, all cards will be downloaded into your mobile phone. The mobile app also provides a long list of features not yet available in the web interface such as:
| • |
|
Sending quick intro emails to new contacts |
| • |
|
Sending LinkedIn invites |
| • |
|
Setting follow-up reminders in the Calendar |
| • |
|
Exporting directly to Salesforce.com and Daylite CRM |
| • |
|
Export to Data.com (Jigsaw) and Evernote |
To learn more about the mobile app’s 27+ features visit www.scanbizcards.com or watch videos at www.scanbizcards.com/videos
Cost The Web Sync service is offered at $20 for the first year and includes the ability to upload any number of CDB files + access to desktop synchronization solutions as they become available. 2nd year renewal and later are only $10/year.
Please email ScanBiz Mobile Solutions with any questions 24/7 at info@scanbizcards.com.

On Saturday, I visited an old Jasper in the hospital. He was in for an emergency tune up. Hope he’s out by now. But, to the point, he was telling me his troubles with an unbacked up old Windoze box that was giving him fits. And, his family’s designated stuckee for tech support. Last time, he went through this, I pitched Mozy, Carbonite, or Pogoplug. Reprised that song.
On Sunday, I heard from a relative who’s old unbacked up Windoze box was circling the proverbial bowl. (Seems like “unbacked up” goes with “old Windoze box”.) Reprise my backup song.
Now I realize I’m crazed about it. Two belts and two suspenders.
My photos are on three live boxes, sugarsynced, carbonited, and pogopluged.
My data is on two live boxes, dropboxed, carbonited, and pogopluged.
Special projects are on one, two, or three live boxes, dropboxed, carbonited, and pogopluged. AND, boxneted.
I’ve lost work to Microsoft’s crappy solutions before.
Sure it’s messy, but if I lose something because I fat finger something, there’s always several places to recover from.
Argh!
It’s only common sense.

Raspberry Pi: How a $25 computer could spark a computing revolution
By Nick Heath
February 9, 2012, 6:08 AM PST
Takeaway: Ultra-cheap computers like the Raspberry Pi could usher in a new wave of pervasive computing
*** begin quote ***
One of the machines at the vanguard of the low-cost computing revolution is the Raspberry Pi, a $25 Linux box that will go on sale before the end of February. Despite its budget price the Raspberry Pi still packs a punch, with the multi-media capabilities of an original Xbox console, 1080p video playback, and general processing power of a Pentium II/III. Specs-wise the credit card-sized computer is powered by a 700MHz ARM chip inside a Broadcom BCM2835 has a single USB port and 128MB of memory, with an additional $10 buying a souped-up version with two USB ports, 10/100 ethernet and 256MB of memory.
*** end quote ***
At the very least, it’ll be back to the days of Byte Magazine and hardware hacking galore. At the very least, those kids with all the time in the world will be computing savants.
Hard to imagine what it will be capable of?
Kids will probably break into two camps — 90% being the ipad Users and the other 10% will be the next hacking generation.
I’m going to buy some just to play.
This is stuff that was a dream when I was in injineering school.
p.s., I still have my slide rules. In case I have to design a bridge in TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It)!

Resolutions with LastPass: #10 Strengthen Your Master Password
*** begin quote ***
For the last installment in our resolutions series, we wanted to touch upon an important aspect of using LastPass: the strength of your master password. At LastPass, we’ve always touted we’re “the last password you’ll ever need”. With only one strong password to remember and a host of customizable security options, you can let LastPass take care of the rest. So it goes without saying, then, that your LastPass master password should be strong and unique while still memorable.
*** end quote ***
Personally,
I never use (i.e., reuse) the same password anywhere. I used to use my SecureId token to generate random numeric passwords. When it died, I moved to a book code to generate passwords. Then, I generated pages of random noise with http://clsc.net/tools/random-string-generator.php as the tool.
(1) for websites that I won’t have to authenticate to manually, I let LASTPASS give me a random string that’s as long as the site allows.
(2) for websites that I will have type or tap in, I use four random words with a special characters as separators. And, I log in once from a real keyboard and let LASTPASS capture it.
(3) for bank accounts and other sites related to finances, I do the old fashioned random sentence like “wrong#sign#bridge#fall#down#nooo#partial#credit”. With a LASTPASS safe not with a reminder: “What did Doctor Zia say about a sign error? With #’s”.
I don’t trust anyone with my money. :-) Even myself.
Hope this helps?

Tried to watch my alma mater on ESPN3.
(Great idea!)
But on the computer, it’s unwatchable.
Poking around, I found it was available on the IPAD with its own free app.
Downloaded the APP and, same network, it looks perfect.
Watching both side by side!
The computer side is unwatchable; the IPAD is perfect.
It appears that there is a 10 second delay between what the computer is showing and what the IPAD is.
Also, the IPAD goes quiet during the commercials. (How kool is that!)
Argh!

We decided to download a free preview version of E.O. Wilson’s “Life on Earth” textbook to get a feel for the features (the preview comes with only two chapters). Navigating through chapters and sections of a textbook works great on the iPad. You swipe to switch chapters, or touch sections or pages to get right into the content. We think this will be useful for students who need to jump around through chapters. Once you’re looking at a page, you also have touch options, such as a pinch, which shrinks a page, and slide, which returns it to the navigation area on the bottom of the chapter screen.

Looks like Apple hit this one out of the park.
(I’ve got to upgrade my MACBOOKAIR to try the “AUTHOR” software.)
If it’s as easy and as free as they say, it might be another even bigger revolution. Figure education, from a technology pov, hasn’t changed since Plato taught Aristotle.
This is BOTH a paradigm and meme shift.
Wonder how to extract some of the value from such a shift?
And, how does it impact medicine, engineering, and Informaton Technology?
Free AUTHOR software and easy e-publishing throws the doors open even wider than LULU did.

Here’s the strike back against Apple’s IBOOKS2.
Apple had the opportunity to break the marketplace open and whiffed.
(1) It’s IOS only and doesn’t support EPUB. In fact Apple’s format is reportedly a broken form of EPUB. Like what Microsoft does, take an open format and break it by extension.
(2) It crony capitalism as Apple enlists the Big Textbooks in locking things up by DRM.
(3) The restrictions on IBOOKS2_AUTHOR are onerous and expensive for authors.
(4) I’m no fan of Gooferment diktats, but this sure looks like an illegal tie in and restraint of trade.
What it does do is to popularize the questioning of expensive text books!
With Open Courseware and Open Text Books?
Look at all the classics in the public domain. Despite bookstores, Apple, and Amazon trying to sell them. Project Guttenberg for me.
And, with the ability to “publish” ebooks and print books cheaply, it will encourage folks to “roll their own”. Lulu print volumes under 25$ a copy and the ebook versions are basically free with no restrictions. Amazon’s Create Space is cheap; although I just saw a hint they were “revising” their offering.
It’s going to collapse the market, imho.

Getting Started: MP3 Store and Cloud Player for Web on iPad
Frequently Asked Questions
The Amazon MP3 Store on iPad lets you shop one of the world’s largest DRM-free (digital rights management free) digital music stores and save your purchases for free to Amazon’s online storage service, Amazon Cloud Drive. Purchases stored in Amazon Cloud Drive are available for playback from any iPad, Mac, PC, or Android device and available for download from any Mac, PC, or Android device using the free web browser-based application Amazon Cloud Player.
# – # – #
OK, first time I’ve “found” a significant flaw in the AMAZON_CLOUD with the IPAD.
You can play your music, BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), you can’t copy it TO the IPAD.
That means you have to be connected to the INET and play YOUR music, that you’ve bought, with their application.
Argh!
The quest is now on for a work around.
# – # – # – # – #
No easy workaround.
(yet)
Why if I buy the song from APPLE_ITUNES does it get downloaded to the IPAD’s version, but if I buy it from AMAZON it can’t be?
Restraint of trade by technology?
# – # – # – # – #
Well it’s there. BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), you have to go thru ITUNES to get it to the IPAD. The downside is that it makes extra copies on the desktop in ITUNES.
Argh!

Dear DYMO Customer,
As you know, CardScan At Your Service was discontinued at the end of the December. At the request of current AYS users, we have begun working with a 3rd party software provider that may be able to offer you a similar service to store your contacts. With the new provider, you may able to synchronize your contacts from your local CardScan application with their cloud application.
Additional details about the new provider will be distributed in the coming weeks, however we wanted to make you aware of this offering as soon as administratively possible.
We would like to thank you again for being a valued CardScan user.
Sincerely,

How Identities Are Stolen
When it comes to identity theft, the first step in protecting yourself is learning what thieves are doing to steal your personal information.
# – # – #
Interesting that LIFELOCK doesn’t have their commercials on their websites. GODADDY, boo hisss sopa-lover, integrates their hyper-sex commercials with their website (i.e., the TV commercial points to the X-rated version and the website has both the TV version and the “X-rated one. I’d dispute the X rating. Yeah, they sucked the lecherous me to watch. I, of course, did it from a technology and moral arbiter pov. Just so you didn’t have to endure it.) LIFELOCK misses the opportunity to reinforce their message.
MORE interesting, is that LIFELOCK’s TV commercial points out the flaw in what I’ll call secondary authentication and what the banks call “easy password recovery”. Argh! Those “password reset” questions are really passwords controlling the reset function. Mother’s Maiden Name, Date of Birth, Pet’s Name.
ARGH!
Absolute stupidity.
I know why the banks and others do it. They don’t want the expense of fielding a telephone call for a password reset. (When I was at CSFB, I figured each one cost “me” 45$. I figured a clever way to “solve” that problem at ZERO cost. Hire me and I’ll share it.)
So, how does the average User defend themselves?
(1) Never ever use these resets for the named purpose? For examples, “Mother’s Maiden Name” for me might be “TAYLOR_SWIFT”; DOB for me is 10/19/62 (Cuban Missile Crisis); Pet’s name is “58#ae#MK#Es#82”. All carefully captured on paper.
(2) Use a tool like LASTPASS, KEYPASS, or 1PASSWORD for NON-FINANCIAL uses.
(3) Use real passwords that you memorize or write down in your calendar or note book for FINANCIAL sites.
(4) Always insist that FINANCIAL institutions or SERVICE PROVIDERS send you a paper bill. Upon receipt, take the statement and review it. Initial EVERY page.
(5) Never permit any one or any thing to have direct access to your financial accounts. (Made that mistake once.)

This is an important Google Health service announcement. You are receiving this email because you have an active Google Health account.
As we announced earlier this year, the Google Health service will be discontinued as of January 1, 2012. After that date, you will no longer be able to access Google Health, and 3rd-party services that you have linked to your Google Health profile(s) will no longer be able to send data to or receive data from those profile(s).
If you want to keep using the data you have stored in Google Health, we strongly recommend that you take action before the end of the year to download it or transfer it to another online health service. We’ve made this easy for you. All you have to do is:
– go to the Google Health site at https://health.google.com
– log in with your Google account

If you have not retrieved your Google Health data before January 1, 2012, it will remain available for download from https://health.google.com for an additional year, through January 1, 2013. Please note that during this period, functionality will be limited to downloading your data in ZIP format only and deleting your Google Health account; you will no longer be able to view, enter, edit, or print data. We may also find it necessary to limit or discontinue the ability to automatically transfer a copy of your profile to another health service, based on technical considerations.
For more details on the discontinuation of Google Health, see our blog post at http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/update-on-google-health-and-google.html, and see answers to frequently-asked questions at http://www.google.com/intl/en/health/faq.html.
Note: you will continue to receive periodic service announcements as long as you have an active Google Health account. If you do not wish to receive further announcements, simply go to https://health.google.com and follow the process to download your data (if desired) and delete your Health account.
Thank you for your support and use of Google Health.

http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/12/15/2013249/us-sentinel-drone-fooled-into-landing-with-gps-spoofing
McGruber writes “Following up on the earlier Slashdot story, the Christian Science Monitor now reports that GPS spoofing was used to get the RQ-170 Sentinel Drone to land in Iran. According to an Iranian engineer quoted in the article, ‘By putting noise [jamming] on the communications, you force the bird into autopilot. This is where the bird loses its brain.’ Apparently, once it loses its brain, the bird relies on GPS signals to get home. By spoofing GPS, Iranian engineers were able to get the drone to ‘land on its own where we wanted it to, without having to crack the remote-control signals and communications.'”

How did they know that?

AFTER USING DEEPWATCH’S NEW SEARCH OFFERING BIZNAR
http://biznar.com/biznar/search.html
Dear Ms. Toni:
Just an observation, …
… from a fat old white guy injineer who does IT consulting, and an alumni newsletter http://jasperjottings-daily.com/.
I look for news about Manhattan College and its alumni.
On Google, my search is <<“manhattan college” -marymount -“marymount manhattan college” -“borough of manhattan college” -marymount -manhattan.edu -bmcc.cuny.edu -msmnyc.edu -mancol.edu -gojaspers.com>>.
I always try all free search services for adherence to what I call the Google, or “Manhattan College”, standard. (Those that work get my continued “business”. Lucky them!)
What happens when I search using <<“manhattan college”>>?
Using Google, I get good results. (OK, sometimes false positives come out like <<manhattan. College>> or <<manhattan, college>>. And, I’ve “suggested” to Google that needs fixing. No response. It’s been a flaw for a while. Guess I should suggest again.)
Using your new engine, <<“manhattan college”>> returns results as if it was <<“manhattan”+”college”>>. (It took Legacy dot com a while to fix it and it’s broken it a few times.)
Any chance, this can be fixed?
Till it is, I can’t use it because it returns too many false positives.
Now I realize that I’m just a “free rider”. I have no budget for services. But maybe my “testing” is useful?
Thanks,
fjohn
