A few interesting points:

  1. The name gets screwed up; the dots don’t translate.
  2. There is an out of print entry created.
  3. The Amazon mark up; why not just buy it from Lulu?
  4. There’s no vanity URL; finding it is a chore.

If you are interested in buying it, save yourself the 30% markup going to Amazon and go buy it directly from Lulu.

Easiest way to get to the book on Amazon is by searching for “church 10?19?62”.

Are you happy with using the Kodak page as a way to send pics? I bought a new Kodak camera and the upload/set up a photo gallery the Kodak page looks pretty simple.

Kodak is a name brand. There is one hidden trap. It’s dead drop simple to put the pics in, print, and share. BUT to get hi rez out, you have to join their “premiere gallery” for 25$ year. (50$ if you want a discount on reprinting I don’t print that much.) Then, you can DOWNLOAD a high rez version of the pics you put in. Otherwise, you’re uploading say a 5meg version, but can only download a 5k version. And, they do promise to keep your pics archived for an annual purchase of some number of dollars (One print order of $10? I think)

So I think Kodak sums up: (1) cheap photo archive; (2) cheap prints (probably cheaper than doing it yourself); (3) a neat one button fix of pics; (4) a central place for all your pixing activities. On the theory that you should never depend upon any ONE point of failure. I suggest that one should upload photos, fix ’em, hirez download them, and then send them to a gmail account (i.e., one message per “album”) with the album name in the subject line.

Also, since scanners are so cheap, old pics should be “captured” in the same way.

I’m thinking of the NOLA flood and SanDigo fires. Bet those folks wish they had such.

Plus, Kodak handles ANY jpeg. So, any important docs can be put into a jpeg and put on the Kodak site. (Cute huh?)

I had some snaps from a party that were pretty good. And, as usual, I put them up here to order some prints. Just before I pressed the order button, I noticed a new (new? new to me) option by the edit button. (I was there to crop one pic.) So, hey, I tried it.

Wow.

It did a fantastic job. So I tried it on all the “roll”. It was a minor miracle. Shots that I had written off as too dark were magically transformed into better than the event in real life.

So, I’m punching this one with the RECOMMENDED button. Right after I blow the cobwebs off of it.

RECOMMENDED: TPIR show

If you are in Vegas, they have “The Price Is Right” show. (It’s NOT the TV program and tix ain’t cheap.) But it’s fun.

Tip: If you’re called as part of a foursome to bid on an item (win and you get up on stage), the THIRD player must bid UNDER the next higher bid. Else the Fourth (Last) Bidder will always go over you by a dollar. So for example, without this tip, when #1 bids $100 and #2 bids $200, you can’t bid $300. The fourth player will bid $301 and the only shot is if you hit it on the head. In the example, with this tip, you’d bid $150 and the fourth player would bid $201. You’d at least have a shot. If you want to be nasty, you could bid 101 and take the whole number space, but I believe The Universe would see that and make the right price exactly $100 to rub your nose in your immoral behavior. (But that’s just me.) For the second bidder, I’d always bid a dollar, and take the under. In the five showcases, I saw taking the under would have won at least one.

Tip: If you get to the final showcase, take care not to “overbid”. In my visit, both contestants overbid. My recommended strategy for the second contestant is to ALWAYS bid a dollar. They have the wrinkle that if you come within a dollar you win the showcase. If you are the correct bidder, you win a prize. Not the showcase.

Recommended: Best ‘Free’ Show in Vegas

For perspective, I am the ‘luddite’ friend that John refers to and makes fun of on his blog.  But what I wanted to tell you about was the best ‘free’ show in Las Vegas.  John and I, along with our ‘fraus’ (a Johnism), were vacationing in LV last week and we went to Bill’s Gambling Hall & Saloon (for LV old-timers this is the old Barbary Coast Casino, behind the Flamingo).  In the lounge area where there is a small stage they have an Elvis impersonator act that is the best I have seen (The Las Vegas Review and Vegas.com agrees with me as they voted him ‘Best of Vegas; and Elvis Impersonator of the year in 2006).  The guy sits in a huge specially built chair, since he is probably 450 lbs.  But the good news is that he has lost over 400 pounds in the past couple of years, all on his own without surgery.  So you can imagine how big he was when he started to diet.  But his size has nothing to do with the experience, this guy has a great show that runs for an hour, takes requests, involves the audience, and here is the best part….he sounds fantastic.  He has a superb voice with great range, and you come away feeling ‘entertained’….and all for free, or the price of a beer if you want one.

RECOMMENDED: Dinner at the EWR Marriott

On recent trip, Frau and I decided to stay at the EWR Marriott on the return trip.

We wanted to go to the city the next day to visit Mom. So rather than trek an hour down the turnpike to home at some late hour — with the potential for being really late if the gooferment FAA decided that weather was involved — and then back up the turnpike an hour the next morning, we bunked over at the airport hotel. It wasn’t cheap. But, having a accident is much more expensive. And, if the flight was ever delayed badly, we could have been going to the city REAL early. :-)

Anyway, it was basically a good decision. Not cheap. But good.

I was moderately wrankled that they charge 27$ to park to go to their hotel.

But, it was clean, neat, and comfortable.

The highpoint was that the restaurant was open for dinner until 11PM. So we had a very nice dinner that was modestly priced. I recommend the restaurant there and the staff that was also very good.

I’d rate it as an “I’d stay there again”! My highest rating.
