VA Suicide Prevention – source Associated Press

The Department of Veterans Affairs in Texas will conduct a

mortality study to track causes of death for veterans putting

together a model that could allow similar data to be gathered nationwide. The department’s decision came two

months after an Austin American-Statesman investigation

found that nearly as many Texas veterans died from prescription medicines as from suicide. The newspaper says it

used autopsy and toxicology reports, inquests and accident

reports from more than 50 state agencies to determine the

causes of death for 266 Texas veterans who had been receiving disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs when they died. The department says its study will

look at veterans who served in combat. The VA officials

declined to say how the study would be used nationally.

White House Sends Warning Letter to Photographer who Photographed Obama’s Daughters
via PINAC by Carlos Miller on 1/8/13

*** begin quote ***

A celebrity photographer who snapped photos of President Barack Obama’s daughters frolicking on a public beach in Hawaii received a warning from the White House that their privacy should be respected.

As official and intimidating it may be to receive such a letter from the White House, it carries no legal standing. It is merely part of an informal agreement Obama has with the media, which once used to pride itself in being the Fourth Estate.

The photographer was on the beach last week waiting to snap a photo of Jessica Simpson when he spotted Malia and Sasha Obama, age 14 and 11, so he naturally snapped their photos, thinking he could make a sale.

But he was quickly accosted by Secret Service agents, who demanded his identification. They did not delete his photos but told him not to take anymore photos.

The photographer then turned around and sold the existing images, which he had every right to do if he did not personally agree to the agreement with the White House.

*** and ***

While it is understandable that Obama would like to keep his daughters out of the public eye, it makes one wonder what other “unofficial agreements” he has made with the media not to report certain information.

*** end quote ***

I really don’t have a problem if the news people report only what they fell is news worthy.

I do have a problem when the Gooferment has “unofficial agreements”.

If at the beginning of every year, there was an explicit  public statement of what and was not acceptable about the children, I’d applaud.

But, then the politicians can’t trot them out as “props”. Same for the First Ladies, they are either “in politicos” and hence “fair game”. Or out as Laura Bush, and then out of bounds.

‘MORNING JOE’ CONFIRMS OBAMA WILL PAY NO PRICE FOR LIBYA COVER UP

by JOHN NOLTE 20 Nov 2012, 5:48 AM PDT

*** begin quote ***

Democrats defending Susan Rice makes sense, but we’re talking about the media here and a guy who claims to be a Republican. And the overall message is that they don’t care about the cover up. And they really don’t care that Rice was the tip of the spear of the cover up — the voice of the Administration that said in no uncertain terms that until the election’s over, we’re not going to have a discussion about a successful terror attack on Obama’s watch.

We knew then we were being lied to at the time, but after the testimony of David Petraeus last week, it’s not even arguable anymore. But the media has obviously decided that’s okay.

One of Scarborough’s defenses was, “This is what White House’s do.” He also said that no one called for Colin Powell to step down as Secretary of State after he gave incorrect testimony about WMDs during his tenure — which is a false equivalence.

Our intelligence community and their counterparts throughout the world believed Iraq had WMDs.

When Susan Rice did her talk show round robin with altered talking points, our intelligence infrastructure already known for three entire days that Libya had been a terror attack. For the sake of national security, Powell said what he and everyone else believed to be true. Rice said what she and everyone knew to be a lie, for the sake of Obama’s reelection.

Police say a wrong-way driver ended up going 18 miles on an interstate in northeastern Pennsylvania.

The Times-Leader of Wilkes-Barre reports (http://bit.ly/S4zLIf ) police say traffic was light when it happened around 5:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day, and no one was hurt. Police responded after getting calls about a vehicle going at high speeds the wrong direction on Interstate 81 north.

Troopers say they tried unsuccessfully to get the driver’s attention using emergency lights and a spot light. Authorities say she was eventually stopped using a roadblock in Laflin, about 18 miles from where she started in Dickson City.

Taylor Swift, Walgreens, and me

A marketing whore?

That’s a little “hard”.

Is that like a man is assertive and a woman is bitchy?

You have to admire that her net worth reportedly jump about 165M$ in the last year. And, that’s what they know about. Her merchandise sales and tie ins fly under the radar.

She’s really the successor to Reba who succeeded Dolly.

The only question is can she sustain it.

The stuff that I read says that there are 2 year transitions early in the “star career” early between 14 and 21. Then they begin to lengthen until they finally become decades. Cites of successful transitions are Betty White, Liz Taylor, Jodi Foster, and Madona. Cites of unsuccessful are Jenna Elfman, Lindsey, Pink, Barbara Striesand, Jane Fonda, and on and on.

It’s a tough business and the public is fickle.

I’d cite Lady Kazan, who technically had a better voice than her contemporary Babs, but lost out. Judy Collins succeeded over Jody Mitchell but couldn’t make the transition form Folk music to the Beetles.

I feel bad for people with a gift who’s gift for whatever reason can not make the leap. “Starving artist” is a cliche.

At the very least, someone like these people must “make hay while the sunshines” because at any minute the music can stop and they are left without a chair.

I think the thing that I admire most about a Taylor Swift is that she “knew” what she wanted to do so early in life and had the huevos to go for it. She sounded “sad” when she said she wanted to go to college but made a decision to forego it to pursue her career. Her “stones” came out when she passed on the record deal from RCA. (Wonder who, if anyone, got fired for that?) And, she had the chutzpah to sign with a start up record label as their Number One artist.

Amazing.

Shows me the nerve of a cat burglar. The savvy of a NYC three card mote dealer. And the Noblise Oblige of some one who’s living their dream.

Dear Usual:

The revolt begins. One person at a time realizing. BTW the “pledge” was invented by a guy who sold flags to schools and was a Nazi.

And, when you have time, think about what the “pledge” means.

Or, maybe the roles: “A citizen pledges alegience in exchange for protection”. Don’t know about you but I don’t feel very protected. I feel more like the English Saxon who needed a Robin Hood.

Maybe even the Dead Old White Guys, who objected to the King’s infringements. Substitute the Federal Government and the mob of drones that control it. The crony capitalism. And the increasing losses of freedom.

The “Gun Control” debate isn’t about “GUNS”; it is about “CONTROL”. “Victim disarmament is the view that it is somehow better to see a woman raped in an alley and strangled with her own pantyhose, than see her with a gun in her hand.” — T.D. Melrose And, we can’t allow the people any tool to resist the gooferment. “And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? . . .” — Alexander Solzhenitsyn

You really don’t think that the Civil War aka the War of Nothern Aggression was about slavery. You don’t get your history lessons from the movie LINCOLN — who was the absolute worst two-face President by far.

Then think about the fiscal cliff debate and how they feel that they can take HALF of what you earn without even some much as a “thank you”? Evne the Bible says 10% max to God.

I wonder what will bring the Clovers (a modern name for the Sheeple) to the streets.

Are you ready for the 5% tax increase on 1/1. And the Obamacare tax of 3.8% that kicks in. And the 1.2% increase in FICA. And, that doctors will be paid 17% less.

And, the Prez in in Hawaii enjoying a much need vacation.

Please.

I haven’t stood for the Pledge in a long time.

If they want to sing, I sing along with GOD BLESS AMERICA, or Woddie Guthrie’s THIS LAND IS YOU LAND, or any anti-war song.

Time for a change and it starts with you. I’ve already changed.

:-)

Merry Christmas. Enjoy it while you still can. Maybe the Myans were right; they just had the date wrong.

WHITE HOUSE PETITION CALLS FOR…DEPORTING PIERS MORGAN OVER ANTI-GUN VIEWS

Posted on December 22, 2012 at 3:54pm by Madeleine Morgenstern

*** begin quote ***

A new online White House petition is calling for CNN’s Piers Morgan to be deported for “attacking the Second Amendment” following the Connecticut elementary school massacre.

“British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment,” the petition states. “We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens.”

*** and ***

“Ironic U.S. gun rights campaign to deport me for ‘attacking 2nd Amendment rights’ – is my opinion not protected under 1st Amendment rights?” Morgan wrote.

*** end quote ***

Interesting, but true.

Does the Constitution limit the power of the Federal Government?

As old Lysander taught us: “It’s just GD peive of paper”. Oh no, that was one of the many “presidents”. Spooner pointed out how the Consititution is of “no effect”.

Now the American People can apply “market discipline” to the Brit. If he’s anathema to the American Public, (think Jane Fonda’s ability to take a lover at Vetran’s convention — not very likely if she was the last woman on Earth!), then maybe he’ll understand the role of being a guest in someone  else’s country. Didn’t the Brits forbid Michael Savage from goign to London to speak?

But we know the Constitution is powerless to reign the abuse of the Federal Gooferment, so maybe the abuse of this person’s First Amendment rights would be instructive.

Maybe the Sheeple would get the message?

Then they will ask what is the difference between one nut killing children in CT and the USA killing children aka “collateral damage” in AfPak?

Anyone wonder why we aren’t beloved?

Personally, I was astonished!

She is supposedly a “marketing maven”.

BUT!

She missed the boat — or someone did — with the Walgreen’s deal.

FIRST, She should have has a “display clause”. “Her” display was messy! Needed to be “straightened”.

SECOND, she should have INSISTED on a higher quality notebook.

(a) the paper used in her notebook was of flimsy quality; (not that I think it has to be great, but it was like tissue paper)

(b) it has no red margin line line normal loose leaf filler; (how much did that add to the bottom line!) AND

(c) I was expecting some “personalization”. (Since her audience is tweens, preteens, and at least one fat old white injineer I would suggest that the “notebooks” should have taken the opportunity to communicate something inspirational to all the young girls who hang on her every word and one fat old white guy injineer who wishes he was 50 years younger.)

If I was a “pop star”, then I hope I would try to “communicate” with my young girl fans?

Do I tell them to: (a) study hard? (b) close your knees and bring about world peace; or (c) figure out what you want to be when you grow up like I did and don’t let anyone distract you from your goal.

Their Proper Name

*** begin quote ***

To undo it, there must be a rebirth of what they called in cowboy flicks, straight-talking. Calls things by their proper name – and challenge those who don’t or won’t. Make them say what they mean – openly. If you fail to do so, you’ve accepted their terms.

*** and ***

Most people are innocent victims of verbal (and written) rights-rape. For example, public schools. Well, no – they’re not. Yes, they are “open” to the public – in the sense that the public is forced at gunpoint to send its children to them. Which gives us a clue as to the proper name that ought to be used in every instance of discussion: Government schools. It is what they are, in plain, direct – and thus, honest – language. Nothing less. Which of course is why honest language is not generally used to describe them. Because that might get people thinking along certain lines. “Public” sounds so much… friendlier. Free, almost – a vicious irony if ever there was. You’re not free to decline to pay for them (even if you don’t use them). And most kids are certainly not free to not attend them. Very much what you’d expect of a government school. Because the essential attribute of government is coercion – force. The thing that must never be openly stated – but always euphemized.

*** end quote ***

So don’t let it happen to you.

Insist on clear definitions and meaningful labels.

THIS CHART IMPLIES SOMETHING VERY TROUBLING ABOUT THE PRICE OF GAS

Posted on December 4, 2012 at 12:50pm by Becket Adams

*** begin quote ***

See that? Although the price of crude has fallen in recent months, as the above chart clearly indicates, the price of gasoline remains at a record high.

“Anecdotally, it feels like when oil prices rise, gas prices at the pump rise; but when turmoil pauses in global geo-politics – or some entity decides that high oil prices just will not do for the world’s economy – gas prices at the pump seem not to drop so quickly,” writers are Zero Hedge note.

“Yes there are pipeline, inventory (and even tax) issues but the following chart suggests ‘gouging’ on a national level,” they add.

It’s also worth noting that what we’re seeing today with the price of gasoline and crude is eerily similar to what we saw right before the economic collapse of 2008.

*** end quote ***

I think there maybe a big overhang on the markets due to increased costs (i.e., Obamacare) and increased taxes (i.e., the fiscal cliff).

Given the “gouging rules” passed after Sandy. Or used during Sandy. I wouldn’t lower my price un my competition forces me to.

It’s for your own good, kids: The “Isolation Box” at Longview, Washingon’s Mint Valley Elementary School

Warrantless “drug sweeps” in government-run schools have become routine in recent years. So have “lock-down” drills in which SWAT teams conduct training exercises involving hostage or terrorism scenarios. In some lock-down drills, students inmates have been kept in the dark about the fact that the incident is a training exercise, rather than a genuine crisis.

Vista Grande High School in Casa Grande, Arizona, held a lock-down drug sweep on October 31. Students Inmates were confined to their classrooms, then led in small groups to another room where they were forced to line up against a wall and be searched with the help of drug-sniffing dogs. This exercise introduced a new element: Among the four law enforcement agencies involved in the search was a group of prison guards employed by the Corrections Corporation of America, the nation’s largest for-profit prison contractor.

For decades, it has been obvious that there are irreconcilable differences between Americans who want to control the lives of others and those who wish to be left alone. Which is the more peaceful solution: Americans using the brute force of government to beat liberty-minded people into submission or simply parting company? In a marriage, where vows are ignored and broken, divorce is the most peaceful solution. Similarly, our constitutional and human rights have been increasingly violated by a government instituted to protect them. Americans who support constitutional abrogation have no intention of mending their ways.

Article – Why there are no Red Cross shelters in New York City
Posted on November 21, 2012

*** begin quote ***

But that shelter operation never came to pass, and volunteers were told that the Red Cross would not be needing shelter workers. In the meantime, images of New York City’s many devastated neighborhoods filled nightly newscasts; and the housing situation for many New Yorkers grew increasingly dire. The city has estimated that between 20,000 and 40,000 residents could be homeless or forced to live in unheated homes with no running water or power. The conditions are particularly deplorable in the high rises that dot the landscape near the waterfront in Brooklyn and Queens. About 5,200 Staten Islanders have applied for FEMA housing, but according to the New York Post only 24 or so have been placed.

Criticism has rained down on the Red Cross for not providing places for this mass of displaced people to live, but it seems that the aid organization is not permitted to set up shelters in the city due to a snarl of red tape.

*** and ***

Moral of the story is, even if there are groups predicated on disaster services, and they get to the scene, and local governemnt has plans as well, there’s no guarantee anything is going to get done. You’re far better off preparing on your own.

Which, really, brings me to something I’ve been curious about. Everyone is related to everyone in NYC. Big Catholic, Jewish, Italian, Irish families with relatives spread all over the place….why are these people not staying with relatives?

RANT: Voting doesn’t matter; Opting out, aka secession, does

Saturday, November 17, 2012

Jim Gearhardt
NJ 101.5

Jim:

I own several houses in NJ. (I’m in the process, as are many older retiring new jersey-ites, of transitioning from NJ to NH via VA. Personally I’m being driven out by the high taxes. Most notably the Inheritance Tax.) I knew when the Storms hit that the taxpayer would be paying.

Can I ask you to consider some points?

(1) Were these towns self-insuring? This may have been a decision to save money in the short-term. To spend on other priorities. Why is the taxpayer being punished for a decision that they had no input to?

(2) “No taxation without representation.” What a joke. I have a summer family property in Seaside Heights. How do I vote for lower taxes? Or about anything they decide?

(3) In the recent election, the “takers” won. People love “free” stuff. But what are they going to “take” when those that “make” stop “making”?

Sorry to sound like an old grump. I did HANJ. I did GRIP. I tea partied.

I know you say that “secession was settled by the Civil War and isn’t going to happen” is unthinkable. I would suggest individuals can secede by just not cooperating. Remember Martin Luther King and Gandhi.

“Yes. In the end, you will walk out. Because 100,000 Englishmen simply cannot control 350 million Indians, if those Indians refuse to cooperate.” — movie Gandhi (1983)

Peaceful. Non-violent. Non-cooperation.

Sound familiar?

I have enjoyed your morning rant for many years and now listen from VA via the inet. Thanks for the shore updates. Fight the good fight.

p.s., ½ the folks don’t vote and the ½ that did vote doesn’t make a mandate. And remember if voting made any difference, they would let us do it. “Democracy” is two wolves and a lamb deciding what’s for dinner. You have demonstrated to me that VOTING in NJ is meaningless.

RANT: Price “gouging” in a disaster; what nonsense

Two Newark Gas Stations Accused of Price Gouging – Newark, NJ Patch

http://newarknj.patch.com/articles/two-newark-gas-stations-accused-of-price-gouging

——–

What nonsense.

There’s no such thing as “gouging”.

The marketplace always clears willing buyers and sellers.

By allowing “gouging”, the marketplace to sort who really needs gas from who REALLY REALLY needs it.

Plus, the “marketplace” has a memory. If someone “screws” me, when times normalize, then I will NEVER patronize that place again.

Gas in North Jersey should be much more expensive than gas in South Jersey. To satisfy the “extra” demand from New Yorkers, who need it more!

Maybe gas up there would float to 20$/gallon. Then the north jersey people will drive down to Central Jersey. And the price in central Jersey floats up to $10 a gallon.

And Central Jersey ites drive south for their gas.

Also the “greedy” oil companies say “I want to sell my gas for 20$/gallon”. First thing you know there’s more gas in North Jersey than they can sell.

I’m an injineer; not an economist. Them ekkynomists have all sorts of fancy names for it. I call it “common sense”.

Of course, then we have no need for politicians and bureaucrats to “implement rationing”. Just the King’s “weights and measures” guy. We don’t even need him. The gas station that delivers a short gallon will be found out by the marketplace. Which will administer its own brand of “rough justice”.

(The buyer with his five gallon can sees that the pump says “five” but his can ain’t full. And maybe the buyer will administer some “rough justice”. Joined by everyone waiting behind him. Then, when the cops break up the fight, and non one saw anything, they can arrest the seller for fraud.)

Basically, if the gooferment prevents force or fraud, then it should allow the “invisible hand” of the marketplace to “set” the price. The marketplace will efficiently and relentlessly punish the “gougers”!

RANT: Motorcyclist faults drivers

Thursday, November 15, 2012

As the voice of the loyal opposition, traversing Route 95, I see some outrageous driving by moron-o-cycles. So, I think that we should feather back the soundbites. Remember NO politician who wants to be reelected will EVER mention “retesting”. As a little L libertarian, I think the Gooferment should leave driver “licensing” and auto “registration” to the evil insurance companies. And, “no victim; no crime”. If you have an accident, then it should be restitution. Speeding tickets and red light cameras are merely about revenue; not safety. If everything the State makes illegal (e.g., seatbelts), then my generation should have ended the human race. Argh!

News Alert
from The Wall Street Journal

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta Tuesday asked the Senate to put on hold the confirmation of the top commander in Afghanistan, Marine Gen. John Allen, as the new NATO supreme allied commander for Europe following the discovery of allegedly inappropriate communications between the general and a Tampa social planner.

The planner, Jill Kelley, is at the center of a scandal involving Gen. Allen’s predecessor as the top coalition commander in Kabul, Gen. David Petraeus, who resigned as CIA director last week after acknowledging an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

Isn’t amazing how these “big” smart powerful men can not control their urges?

Stunning!

Isn’t NATO an idea who’s time has passed any way?

And if Clinton’s affair was “OK”? Why are these any different?

Argh!
