RANT: The end of “football”?

Wednesday, August 2, 2017

Game Over?

It seems crazy to imagine the end of football. The game is so beloved, so profitable, and, frankly, such a cultural mirror that it feels like a permanent feature of American life. There are many franchises and schools with a deep interest in football’s continued prosperity. The game is a godsend for the entertainment industry. All of which is why if football ever vanishes, it will likely vanish from within—from the players and their parents. This past week a disturbing medical study was released showing brain damage in the brains of 110 of 111 deceased NFL players. Shortly afterward, a Ph.D.-candidate offensive lineman in Baltimore abruptly retired at age 26. Sports columnist Jason Gay explores what the report means for the future of the sport.

Certainly can’t ask men to risk their brains for a “game”. No matter how much money it makes!

RANT: And the airlines wonder why

Please Be Seated

If you buy an assigned seat at a theater, sports arena or concert venue, you get the seat you picked. But an assigned seat on an airline is radically different: Every so often, you don’t get it, even when you pay extra for it. Premium-seating fees guarantee nothing. It’s happened to families who see their children reassigned rows away from their parents. It’s happened to single travelers when airline computers automatically shuffle seats on full flights. It’s happened to political commentator Ann Coulter. But why? Airlines started placing price tags on particular seats in about 2010. But they didn’t really change their procedures at airport gates to match the marketing. We look at why passengers’ expectations often don’t match up with reality.

That Airline Seat You Paid for Isn’t Yours
Frustrated fliers discover that paying for a preferred seat on a flight guarantees them nothing

If you buy an assigned seat at a theater, sports or concert venue, you get the seat you picked.

And it famously happened to political commentator Ann Coulter, who erupted in a Twitter tirade earlier in July after Delta moved her from a preferred aisle seat to a window seat in the same extra-legroom row. Delta roared back, calling her out for attacking employees and the airline over what was at best a minor inconvenience.

Airlines started placing price tags on particular seats—letting fliers pay an ancillary fee for a preferred seat, often with extra legroom—in about 2010. But they didn’t really change their procedures at airport gates to match the marketing. That means passengers’ expectations often don’t match up with reality.

Nothing but pure “bait and switch”. Maybe if the Big Airlines weren’t “in bed” with Big Gooferment, the traveler would get a fair shake.

Sounds like an “unfair and unequal” contract. Doesn’t Judy Judy say that isn’t allowed. Much like the shrink-wrap, “license disclosure after purchase”, and “terms & conditions” in 3 point red font on red background in retail cars!

RANT: The road to hell — entitlements!

Thursday, July 6, 2017

FROM THE WSJ

*** begin quote ***

John P. Donchess of Ohio weighed in: “The Senate health-care bill will pass, be reconciled with the House bill and be signed into law by President Trump. Anything less is political suicide for the Republicans. This entitlement is here to stay, despite what conservatives (including myself) would prefer. This bill advances the ball in the right direction and allows for further improvements to be made in the future.”

*** end quote ***

Once an “entitlement” is “given”, it’s HARD to claw it back.

“Conservatives” should have fought harder to prevent it in the first place. Medicare, Medicaid, and “welfare” are classic examples.

The road to hell is paved with entitlements!

The USA is broke; its bankruptcy will be the ultimate “claw back”.

RANT: Giving away the USA to “immigrants” who don’t want to assimilate

Hi! This is a blog post I threw together in response to the recent increase in refugee numbers by Trump’s State Department, in order to convey what it is like living in an Islamizing area. I gave a talk at a luncheon a few months ago that was basically relating my story of how my hometown has been Islamized by refugee resettlement. So it makes sense to do a blog post.

I’m from the Utica, NY area. Utica is the city nicknamed by the UN “the city that loves refugees!” Soon every American city will be a city that loves refugees! Get ready! So I would like to tell you what it is like living in an area where the major city is about 25% (or more) refugee, mainly Muslim

I was born in Utica, a “faded industrial town” along the Mohawk River/Erie Canal corridor, and lived there until I was 8-years-old when my family moved to a nearby small college town. I loved living in Utica because there were lots of families on my block, big Catholic families with lots of kids. You could yard-hop, checking out who was available for play. You could bike around the neighborhood. There were block parties in the summer. My grandmother lived up the street. Life was good.

*** and ***

Want to know why my application was rejected several times even though we qualified? Want to know why it was so difficult to get food stamps? The Department of Social Services in my area is swamped because of the refugees. 25% of the city are refugees. Virtually all of the refugees are on welfare. And when they apply for welfare, they don’t do so as an independent entity, as I did. They go through their refugee resettlement agency who deals with the Department of Social Services for them. So basically Americans get the short shrift, and refugees get taken care of. And that’s America. This is why so many Democrats voted for Trump. Americans are getting squeezed out by non-Americans at multiple levels.

*** and ***

The nice lady who asked me to give a talk a couple months ago on my hometown asked me if there were any refugees who were an “asset to the community”. I replied that they do not consider themselves part of your community, so if they are going to be an asset to any community, it is not going to be yours.

*** end quote ***

This is so frustrating.

“We, The Sheeple” don’t seem to understand that the USA is broke beyond understanding.

We can’t afford the welfare / warfare state. And, immigrants on welfare only makes the situation much worse.

Sad to say, but welfare has to end for EVERYBODY. And, we have to bring the girls and boy home.

Look at Switzerland as the exemplar of a peaceful nation secure in its borders and in its civil society.

RANT: “We” need to rethink out antiterrorism strategies

Sunday, June 18, 2017

FROM THE WSJ

*** begin quote ***

The Jihadis Next Door

One of the three knife-wielding assailants who killed seven people in a terror attack in London was known to security services, authorities said Monday. Neighbors said Khuram Shazad Butt’s extremism was broadcast to the nation early last year in a television documentary called “The Jihadis Next Door,” but police said they had no intelligence suggesting the 27-year-old Pakistan-born British citizen was plotting violence. Police identified the second attacker as Rachid Redouane, 30, who they said had claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan, and the third as as Youssef Zaghba, a 22-year-old Italian of Moroccan descent. Meanwhile, with national elections set for Thursday, British Prime Minister Theresa May’s political opponents have gone after her on security issues. We look at British counterterrorism authorities’ soul-searching following the third terror attack since March, as well as the challenge online terrorist propaganda continues to represent for companies such as Google and Facebook, where videos and other content are still widely displayed.

*** end quote ***

Seems obvious that Humanity needs to rethink our strategies and memes.

(1) Clearly, “religion” is a meme that drives people to act. Sometimes for good (i.e., Mother Teresa) and sometimes for evil (i.e., Islamic terrorism; Child marriage; Child abuse).

(2) Our current responses to terrorism is reactive. “War” is often immoral, ineffective, and inefficient as a response to terrorism. Terrorism is a tactic; not a strategy or an “opponent”.

(3) So the “civilized world” needs some more effective tactics.

(4) I heard one tactic that struck at the heart of the religious beliefs of Islamic terrorists. And it responded me of the 1857 Sepoy Rebellion in India die to “greased cartridges”. The bodies of terrorists should become the property of the State and nothing further said. The corpses would not be released to the families or groups. It could be buried in a way that is inconsistent with their “religious beliefs”.

(5) The Swiss have a tougher standard to become a citizen. The potential citizen must demonstrate their actions to integrate into Swiss society. The USA needs to adopt that as does the world democracies.

(6) The Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy. When it turns a blind eye to ANY violation of law by immigrants or non-integrating minority. That means: ZERO no go zones like in Paris; no “religious accommodation” for “special spaces” in public building; and no exception to child education requirements.

(7) Revoke citizenship of those who go to fight for ISIS overseas and don’t readmit them. Strong prosecution of citizens / residents of those who communicate with or provide material support to terrorist organizations. DO something with those on the watch list — restrict their access to the country.

(8) END welfare for non-citizens now. (Really should be ended for everyone!) It appears that our society are funding these terrorists with welfare. No welfare for any immigrant.

(9) Bring back the sponsorship requirement for immigrants. Used to be required. Then the sponsors are held responsible for those they sponsor.

(10) Prosecute enablers of terrorists.

(11) Cut off Saudi Arabia funding of these terrorist mosques.

That might be a start?

Women have had to fight every step of the way. They still are fighting men who oppose their right to control their own bodies.

The wives of such political leaders should deny their husbands marital rights for a period each time they do some asinine anti-female thing.

The Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation announced the Utah Search and Rescue Assistance (USARA) card last week. With it, outdoor enthusiasts are exempt from non-medical costs associated with emergency rescue services, should the need arise.

The purpose of the subscription service is to protect both victims of unexpected worst-case scenarios, and the state and counties in which they occur. Both residents and tourists can purchase the card for single- or five-year coverage to defer fees for helicopter transport and emergency crews.

Meanwhile, proceeds from the USARA card will fund training for search-and-rescue (SAR) volunteers and maintenance costs for emergency vehicles and equipment.

RANT: The “opined addiction” suit is about a Gooferment cash grab; not about the victims

FROM BEHIND THE WSJ PAYWALL

Barry Rose of Nebraska said: “Painkillers are a necessary evil, and the doctors who prescribe them are well aware of their addictive nature. The doctor is responsible to warn their patient, to make sure the opioid isn’t abused and to carefully monitor their patient. If the states were really interested in opioid abuse, they would go back to the doctors and pharmacies that dispensed them, but they aren’t. The pharmaceutical companies are a better target, deep pockets for the cash-starved states to plunder. It’s always about the money. When I see the states paying out that money to victims, then I will think differently.”

*** end quote ***

The Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy.

Here’s a classic example. Sue the Big Drug Companies rather than legalize ALL drugs.

The first tactic puts more money the Gooferment coffers to spend while the second removes it while it “solves” the problem.

Close the excess prisons, courts, and probation and release the excess people to the free market. Transfer the money spent on “punishment” to “rehab”.

Which way would you like it to go?

Suit against Hillary Clinton over Benghazi deaths and emails is dismissed
By JOSH GERSTEIN 05/26/2017 10:58 PM EDT

*** begin quote ***

A federal judge in Washington has dismissed a lawsuit alleging that Hillary Clinton’s lax security surrounding her emails led to the deaths of two of the Americans killed in the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

In a ruling Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson tossed out the wrongful death claims as well as allegations that Clinton essentially slandered the parents of the deceased by contradicting accounts the parents gave of events related to their children’s deaths.

The suit was filed last August by Patricia Smith, the mother of State Department information officer Sean Smith, and Charles Woods, the father of CIA operative Tyrone Woods.

*** and ***

In the days following the September 11, 2012 assault in Benghazi, Clinton and other administration officials linked the attack to protests in various places in the Muslim world over an anti-Islam movie trailer released on the internet. However, U.S. intelligence officials ultimately concluded that the assault using mortars and other weapons was not a spontaneous outpouring of anger but an organized attack.

Hillary Clinton Is Furious. And Resigned. And Funny. And Worried.
The surreal post-election life of the woman who would have been president.
By Rebecca Traister

*** begin quote ***

When I walk into the Chappaqua dining room in which Hillary Clinton is spending her days working on her new book, I am greeted by a vision from the past. Wearing no makeup and giant Coke-bottle glasses, dressed in a gray mock-turtleneck and black zip sweatshirt, Hillary looks less Clinton and more Rodham than I have ever seen her outside of college photographs. It’s the glasses, probably, that work to make her face look rounder, or maybe just the bareness of her skin. She looks not like the woman who’s familiar from television, from newspapers, from America of the past 25 years, but like the 69-year-old version of the young woman who came to the national stage with a wackadoodle Wellesley commencement speech in 1969. With no more races to run and no more voters to woo with fancy hair, Clinton appears now as she might have if she’d aged in nature and not in the crucible of American politics. Still, this is not Hillary of the woods. She is reemerging, giving speeches and interviews. It’s clear that she is making an active choice to remain a public figure.

Sounds delusional.

Terror at the Concert

At least 22 people, including children, were killed and 59 wounded by a suicide bomber at a concert hall in Manchester, England, on Monday night. Just after American pop singer Ariana Grande finished a show at the 21,000-seat Manchester Arena, a loud explosion outside sent screaming fans, many of them young girls, fleeing. The blast took place near the box office, the Greater Manchester Police said, and on Tuesday authorities said they believed they knew the identify of the bomber and were seeking to determine whether he had acted alone or was part of a broader terror network. World leaders including President Trump issued condemnations, and national campaigning for Britain’s June 8 general election was suspended. It was the U.K.’s second terror attack this year and deadliest since 2005.

MileagePlus # XXXXX168

Dear Mr. Reinke,

Each flight you take with us represents an important promise we make to you, our customer. It’s not simply that we make sure you reach your destination safely and on time, but also that you will be treated with the highest level of service and the deepest sense of dignity and respect.

Earlier this month, we broke that trust when a passenger was forcibly removed from one of our planes. We can never say we are sorry enough for what occurred, but we also know meaningful actions will speak louder than words.
For the past several weeks, we have been urgently working to answer two questions: How did this happen, and how can we do our best to ensure this never happens again?
It happened because our corporate policies were placed ahead of our shared values. Our procedures got in the way of our employees doing what they know is right.
Fixing that problem starts now with changing how we fly, serve and respect our customers. This is a turning point for all of us here at United – and as CEO, it’s my responsibility to make sure that we learn from this experience and redouble our efforts to put our customers at the center of everything we do.
That’s why we announced that we will no longer ask law enforcement to remove customers from a flight and customers will not be required to give up their seat once on board – except in matters of safety or security.
We also know that despite our best efforts, when things don’t go the way they should, we need to be there for you to make things right. There are several new ways we’re going to do just that.
We will increase incentives for voluntary rebooking up to $10,000 and will be eliminating the red tape on permanently lost bags with a new “no-questions-asked” $1,500 reimbursement policy. We will also be rolling out a new app for our employees that will enable them to provide on-the-spot goodwill gestures in the form of miles, travel credit and other amenities when your experience with us misses the mark. You can learn more about these commitments and many other changes at hub.united.com.
While these actions are important, I have found myself reflecting more broadly on the role we play and the responsibilities we have to you and the communities we serve.
I believe we must go further in redefining what United’s corporate citizenship looks like in our society. You can and ought to expect more from us, and we intend to live up to those higher expectations in the way we embody social responsibility and civic leadership everywhere we operate. I hope you will see that pledge express itself in our actions going forward, of which these initial, though important, changes are merely a first step.
Our goal should be nothing less than to make you truly proud to say, “I fly United.”
Ultimately, the measure of our success is your satisfaction and the past several weeks have moved us to go further than ever before in elevating your experience with us. I know our 87,000 employees have taken this message to heart, and they are as energized as ever to fulfill our promise to serve you better with each flight and earn the trust you’ve given us.
We are working harder than ever for the privilege to serve you and I know we will be stronger, better and the customer-focused airline you expect and deserve.
With Great Gratitude,
Oscar Munoz

RANT: The heroin “epidemic” requires a change in our paradigms and memes

Shared from the Hopatcong-Sparta, NJ Patch | Police & Fire
Alert For Deadly Heroin That’s Caused At Least 12 ODs, 3 Deaths In New Jersey
An alert has been issued for a deadly batch of heroin that’s caused at least 12 overdoses and three deaths, according to authorities.
By Tom Davis (Patch Staff) – April 24, 2017 12:53 pm ET

*** begin quote ***

Other authorities in the state said they continue to see an upward trend in the number of ODs and deaths connected to heroin, and they largely blame fentanyl for that.

Fentanyl, the drug responsible for the death of music star Prince, is often laced with heroin to give users an even bigger high – at a potentially deadlier price.

*** end quote ***

For a long time, us little L libertarians have been begging for a change in our society’s paradigms and memes about drug addiction. I am not at all insensitive to the cost and grief this <synonym for excrement> is causing to good people. I am POSITIVE that the current Gooferment-led approach will do NOTHING to solve the problem.

Unfortunately our Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy. AND, it (the Gooferment) likes the situation just as it is.

Here’s one factoid that demonstrates that “prohibition” doesn’t work. “They” can’t keep drugs out of their prisons; what makes you think that it can be kept out of a free society. It didn’t work for alcohol “prohibition”; it won’t work for drug “prohibition” either.

Like they say in the textbooks, “it’s left as an exercise to the readers to” figure out why alcohol “prohibition” required a change to the Constitution BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), drug “prohibition” did not?

Now that we’ve disposed of that lie, fabrication, falsehood, or spin — pick your favorite weasel word — let’s move on to solutions.

“Drug addiction” is a MEDICAL PROBLEM; not a LEGAL one.

So let’s divert all the wealth being wasted on “prohibition” programs to medical program. That means a lot of politicians and bureaucrats will be out of jobs but so what. We want to solve this probem, don’t we?

Us little L libertarians want the Free Market to solve this problem of impure drugs. When was the last time you heard of an adulteration of a mainstream drug. Yup, Tylenol! And what happened? Within hours, the maker and all the retailers had it ALL off the shelves. Quickly it was replaced with safer packaging and better controls. ALL without the Gooferment. So, bottom line, I trust WalMArt, Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aide, and every Mom & Pop pharmacy to sell “safe” drugs to our children and adult addicts.

[For the humbly challenged, if Walmart won’t sell racy magazines to children, what makes you think they will dispense harmful drugs to those same children? And, I bet with every adult drug dispensed, they’ll include the 1-800 number to get help. Just a guess on my part, but I’d bet a paycheck on that.]

Permit me to digress for a moment on the accuracy of the media. See the part about “fentanyl responsible for Prince’s death”? Seems that Ms. Maria Puente of USA TODAY might quibble with this broad brush assertion.

But there are many questions left unanswered:

What killed him?

He died April 21, 2016, in an elevator in Paisley Park in Carver County, Minn. The one-page autopsy report released later said he died of an accidental overdose of the opioid fentanyl.

Famously clean-living Prince died of a painkiller OD at age 57? Unthinkable. Numerous friends, associates, relatives and former wives and girlfriends insisted they never saw him take drugs.

Was there some medical condition that contributed to his death? We may never know because, under Minnesota law, the full autopsy report can be kept secret for up to 30 years unless the next of kin agree to release it. So far, that has not happened.

Why was he taking fentanyl and for how long? Where did he get it? Was it prescribed by a doctor or acquired by illicit means? Did he know some of the pills containing fentanyl were falsely labeled something else? What was the relationship between his death and the episode of six days earlier when he suffered a medical emergency on a plane? (It landed, he was rushed to a hospital and received overdose-style treatment.)

“There is some indication that his addiction went fairly far back, to the mid-1980s and into the late 1990s, but the evidence is ambiguous,” Hahn says. “It’s an incredibly murky picture. He was a very controlled and focused figure, he kept his cards close to the vest so that’s why we don’t know.”

FROM THE READERS DIGEST

*** begin quote ***

SMOKE SIGNALS
by Dan Rolince, Golden, Colorado

On a cool night lit only by the orange glow of fire, we rushed to my grandfather’s home as his decades-old barn burned to the ground. The firemen let us stand nearby as they pumped water from the creek a quarter mile away. We watched the barn go up in flames, which stirred memories of jumping off foot-wide wooden beams into the hay below. The real sadness came as my elderly grandfather, who did not get out of bed, quietly asked if his cows were safe. He hadn’t had dairy cows in a dozen years.

RANT: The human civilization is dying out

Tuesday, March 28, 2017

https://twitter.com/dennisandjudi?lang=en

Coming back from the dentist, I was listening to Dennis Malloy about childlessness and millennials not marrying or having children.

Interesting.

I tweeted the show:

Ferdinand Reinke‏ @reinkefj:

@DennisandJudi Childness does cost society. Japan? Social Security? IA contra survival trait, eliminates the human race eventually.

By our “education system” and parental guidance / example, we are “eliminating” future generations. Never mind the impact of “free” and encouraged abortions, gay marriage, and heavy Gooferment taxation.

Look at Japan, where their posterity will depopulate the island in the next decades.

Look at Europe, where the “Muslim refugees” have a deliberate strategy of out reproducing the local indigenous population.

Look at the USA’s Social Security Ponzi scheme that absolutely REQUIRES new suckers, I mean taxpaying youngsters, to pay off the oldsters whose wealth has been stolen by the politicians and bureaucrats of the past and present.

So, in essence, it all comes down to humanity breaking the “be fruitful and multiply” commandment.

“If you’re green, you’re growing; brown, dying.”

The human civilization is dying out. Like the dodo, or any other extinct species.

So sad.

RANT: Gooferment cuts! “Effective Compassion” will emerge (imho)

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

<A real friend stated on Facebook>

*** begin quote ***

John, I would like to think the world is full of caring People. However, that is not the case. I choose to believe that we live in a nation, the United States, that has the capacity to care about the needs of all citizens. The evidence is that our corporate world, through Citizens United, is able to suppress our best human instincts.

*** end quote ***

OF COURSE, I REPLIED:

*** begin quote ***

Unfortunately, I think your paradigm or perception is wrong.

The USA is a very charitable nation. Even with the high taxation, Americans donate a lot to charity. (Not the politicians and bureaucrats, but real people.) Look at how they respond to international disasters or 911.

AND, if we stop Gooferment funding, then people will not think “oh the Gooferment is taking care of it”.

When real people and private charities get involved, charity is more efficient and effective. Example, the Salvation Army. Or the myriad of stories about individuals stepping up. The USA has a tradition of neighbors helping neighbors.

It’s only when Gooferment takes over “the problem” does it become a “real problem”.

Or course, I forgot to cite that “Effective Compassion” article. http://www.acton.org/public-policy/effective-compassion/seven-principles-century-ago

RANT: ACA is a national disaster

Tuesday, March 14, 2017
I disagree. The ACA is a national disaster. We were much better off under the old non-system. Hopefully, “We, The Sheeple” can convince you to extract us from the mess that originated in the WW2 wage and price controls (i.e., “benefits” are tax deductable to corporation but not to individuals). While I don’t care for the R’s solution, how about if you champion: (1) tax deductibility for ALL health care; (2) catastrophic health care for the uninsurable; and (3) remanding “health”, “health care”, “health care insurance”, or something else to the States for their programs. NOT EVERYTHING is a “federal” problem. I see nothing in the Constitution that gives Congress any power in this area!

Dear friend,

I’ve been reading the bill that House Republican leadership and President Trump released this week to repeal the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) and I’ve got to tell you, it’s a total disaster. Despite their many promises to the contrary, President Trump and House Republicans are pushing a bill that would severely undermine healthcare coverage for millions of Americans. It would also be a devastating blow to our efforts to combat the opioid epidemic. On top of taking health insurance away from millions of Americans, the House Republican plan decimates the Medicaid program, increases premiums for seniors and older Americans, forces the middle class to pay more for less, and defunds vital preventative and reproductive care for women.

Mind you, not everyone is hurt by this bill: Insurance company CEOs get a special tax break. That’s right, hidden in the Republican health care bill is a special tax break that allows Health Care companies to write off CEO pay over $500,000 a year. What’s more outrageous is that this tax break for CEOs is paid for by charging senior citizens an additional $7,000 a year for health care. This bill is a tax giveaway to the wealthy, masquerading as health care reform. It’s shameful.

In dozens of visits to New Hampshire during the campaign, President Trump promised to provide treatment to end the opioid crisis. So why is he pushing for healthcare repeal and many other policies that would take away substance misuse treatment and many other resources that New Hampshire desperately needs to fight the drug epidemic? That’s exactly the question I put to him in a
letter
last week. In it, I call on the President to keep his promise to communities across New Hampshire that are fighting this epidemic with everything they have. I’ll keep you updated and let you know if President Trump responds.

As I’ve said many times, the Affordable Care Act isn’t perfect, but it has undoubtedly made New Hampshire healthier and has helped expand substance misuse treatment coverage to those who desperately need it. In New Hampshire, the uninsured rate has dropped by 43%. A big part of that reduction comes from the coverage provided through Medicaid expansion. Instead of repealing this progress, House Republicans should be working across the aisle to improve the Affordable Care Act. In the last congress, I successfully improved the law to help small businesses. I’ve proven that bipartisan progress on healthcare is possible. This is the much better route for the health, well-being, and peace of mind of Granite Staters. I’m strongly against this reckless repeal bill and I’ll be urging my colleagues in the Senate to oppose it.

RANT: Some charity “leaders” are overpaid

Tuesday, March 7, 2017

FROM WSJ

The Rewards of Charity

Charities are becoming a lot more generous with pay at the top. The tax-exempt organizations, which include many hospitals and colleges as well as traditional charities, provided seven-figure compensation to roughly 2,700 employees in 2014, our analysis of newly available data shows. The total is higher by a third than in 2011. While many of the big earners ran large enterprises, others were leaders of small charities, such as a couple who run an online ministry. Researchers who study pay at charities say it has been increasing for decades as organizations have grown more professional and adopted pay strategies from the corporate world, where executive compensation has also been on the rise. High pay at charities has drawn scrutiny from some lawmakers because the organizations receive substantial tax breaks for committing to public service.

I use the Salvation Army as the exemplar.

And all Big Charity entities (i.e., Red Cross; anything connected with the UN or the Clinton Foundation) as the negative!

Sigh!

RANT: Gates would tax robots? Stupid!

Wednesday, February 22, 2017

https://qz.com/911968/bill-gates-the-robot-that-takes-your-job-should-pay-taxes/

DROID DUTIES
The robot that takes your job should pay taxes, says Bill Gates
Why Bill Gates would tax robots
WRITTEN BY Kevin J. Delaney
February 17, 2017

*** begin quote ***

Robots are taking human jobs. But Bill Gates believes that governments should tax companies’ use of them, as a way to at least temporarily slow the spread of automation and to fund other types of employment.

It’s a striking position from the world’s richest man and a self-described techno-optimist who co-founded Microsoft, one of the leading players in artificial-intelligence technology.

In a recent interview with Quartz, Gates said that a robot tax could finance jobs taking care of elderly people or working with kids in schools, for which needs are unmet and to which humans are particularly well suited. He argues that governments must oversee such programs rather than relying on businesses, in order to redirect the jobs to help people with lower incomes. The idea is not totally theoretical: EU lawmakers considered a proposal to tax robot owners to pay for training for workers who lose their jobs, though on Feb. 16 the legislators ultimately rejected it.

*** and ***

Question: And you’re more on the side that government should play an active role rather than rely on businesses to figure this out?

Well, business can’t. If you want to do [something about] inequity, a lot of the excess labor is going to need to go help the people who have lower incomes. And so it means that you can amp up social services for old people and handicapped people and you can take the education sector and put more labor in there. Yes, some of it will go to, “Hey, we’ll be richer and people will buy more things.” But the inequity-solving part, absolutely government’s got a big role to play there. The nice thing about taxation though, is that it really separates the issue: “OK, so that gives you the resources, now how do you want to deploy it?”

*** end quote ***

So there we have it. Bill Gates is a Big Gooferment socialist or worse.

Ignoring the fact that taxation is theft and there isn’t a SINGLE Gooferment program that meets its goals in an effective and / or efficient manner, how is giving the Leviathan more wealth a good thing?

Bill should stick to retirement and stop trying to save the world. He’s not very good at it.

I just shake my head at the colossal arrogance of left liberal pontificators.

“Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.” — Robert A. Heinlein

All can say is repeat a great movie line:

Kaffee: [interrupts with game-show buzzer sound] eeehhhhh! I’m sorry, your time’s run out! What do we have for the losers, judge? Well, for our defendants, it’s a life time at exotic Fort Leavenworth! And, for defense counsel Kaffee, that’s right, it’s a court martial! Yes, Johnny! After falsely accusing a highly decorated Marine officer of conspiracy and perjury, Lieutenant Kaffee will have a long and prosperous career teaching… typewriter maintenance at the Rocco Globbo School for Women! Thank you for playing “Should we or should we not follow the advice of the galactically stupid!” — Lt. Daniel Kaffee in A Few Good Men played by Tom Cruise
