Nor would there ever be any evidence.

Can’t rewind the VCR. No redos like Groundhog Day. No way to know.

I can empathize with the question.

The answer is “Of course not”. Because even if you wanted to, you can’t. So why waste your time, attention, and effort to make yourself even more unhappy.

My advice is: “Make a decision and hang on for the ride.”

Mine was a hell of a ride. Too short. But there are no guarantees when you buy your ticket to ride.

We need some “outside of the box” action!

Recently, I was surprised when someone close to me didn’t know that there were two kinds of Mass cards. I thought this was surprising. Blinding flash of the obvious. I figured I should post about the difference.

Catholics, and others, “buy” “Mass Cards” for the deceased. It’s an attempt to “buy the deceased’s way into heaven”.

You can decide if such exists, if it’s an appropriate strategy, and if it does any good.

There are, in fact, two types. One with a specific date for the Mass being offered for the name deceased and one without.

The date-specific ones cite a date, time, and location where that specific Mass will be offered.

The non-date-specific promise something else. Masses offered, prayers, “enrollment”, and all sorts of stuff.

Now the funds, given for “Mass Cards”, hopefully go towards good works. So in that sense, it always does good.

There’s a tradition in the American Irish, (I don’t know about other groups), that date specific events in memory of a loved one should be attended.

So, I received four of these. And, I attended one so far, and I plan to go to the other three.

It may or may not make a difference.

So, now, everyone knows that there are, what I will call, “Mass Cards” and “ersatz Mass Cards”.

Interesting the distinction.

It’s inspirational in that people will give away their wealth to try and make the family of the deceased feel better.

One of my now deceased Uncles, called these “White Elephants”, in that you’re being given something that requires actions on your part.

So imho be careful to GIVE “white elephants” they seem to be worth more.

The cost of running the Addis Hope program has now increased by 53% and when some long standing donor partners can no longer assist at the same funding level, I am extremely worried about the future of this much needed program. Your desperately needed financial support obviously continues to be our vital life line. As a little L libertarian, I’m against any form of Gooferment compulsion. Personally, I’m pro-life. I think abortion, euthanasia, and the “death penalty” are wrong for numerous reasons on so many levels.

By the same token, I would not use the force of law to imprison women who make difficult choices. Nor would I punish the doctors who help them in their time of need.

I’m pro-choice on everything.

When we can place all the orphans in decent homes, even if those are orphanages, (I cite Dave Thomas as an exemplar.), then we can become more “interested” in preserving “life”.

The Gooferment has an interest in protecting the lives of people. There is a valid question as to when does life begin? Conception, third trimester, birth, when they can take care of themselves, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, 13, 18, 21, or when they can fight for their rights.

Essentially, it’s when we all agree it does. And, take action to make it so.

Everyone should always follow their conscience. If the Gooferment’s diktat conflict, that’s immoral.

Moreover, providing nutrition through a feeding tube is not normally classified as “treatment,” but as fundamental “care” for a patient. The Vatican has indicated that the removal of nutrition and hydration, in order to hasten the advent of death, is never morally acceptable.

Having just had to make a similar hard decision, I can understand how difficult it is.

In my case it was easy since Frau Reinke and I had discussions about it as recent as the week before the inevitable happened.

That’s why it’s important to have all your papers in order.

Her wish was always to go home. If she couldn’t, she didn’t want absurd heroics. It never came to that. But, I was ready to execute her wishes.

To have someone’s ability to pay intrude on decisions is sad. To have it at a supposedly “catholic” institution is very sad.

A certain young lady I know called me to announce her engagement. I was so pleased to hear that. She’s great young lady and deserves every happiness in the world.

I was modestly embarrassed that she felt it necessary to tell me herself before I read it on Facebook. Folks don’t have to show me such respect.

So, I was honored by the call.

Today, I got a call from the Mother of the Bride. Of course, she’s tickled. And, we chatted about it.

Then she said something that really moved me. “When {Privacy Invoked} told me, she said: “He’s just like Uncle John but younger.”

I was stunned some one using me as a measuring stick. I’d say that is very small stick and should be easy to surpass.

I hope he’s much better than me. Because I know all my short comings and failures.

In a very bad year, this could be high point.

Government Violence: The Real Evil in the World

Not surprisingly, law professor Butler Shafer expressed my sentiments 100%. There is no need to dissect the events in Tucson, except to say, the killing of any human being is a horrific tragedy.

From the murderous street mugger to the violent carjacker and armed robber, killing another human being is the highest immoral act an individual can commit. However, the real evil in the world is the violence perpetrated by governments around the world, including our own.

As a son of Holocaust survivors whose parents were the only ones to have lived through the horror of government-sanctioned mass murder, we as a people should be more outraged about the thousands of innocent people in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan who have been killed by our military as “collateral damage” in the juiced up global war on terror. In addition, where is the outrage by our political leaders, the pundits and others about our government invading a country – Iraq – that made no hostile acts against the American people?

The violence of government is all around us, 24/7. From taxation to regulations to military adventurism, the federal government has become a role model for individuals prone to violence. If the government can use violence to achieve its goals, then violence becomes acceptable in the minds of the unstable. If the government can perpetuate Ponzi schemes, then some in the financial community will try to create their own fraudulent investment programs to enrich themselves at the expense of their fellow citizens.

The role model for violence is not heated political rhetoric, but the actions of government officials who assert they are doing “good” by taxing, spending, regulating, borrowing, debasing the currency and invading other nations. This is not to condone violence against any government official. On the contrary, we should criticize unequivocally their use of violence against the people, while we work toward reestablishing liberty as the highest social good.

Everyone seems to be doing this. Guess I’ll have to do one as well.

BEST

① Frau Reinke escapes the clutches on RWJUH and appears to be good enough to stay out. Barely!

② The genuine admiration of Frau Reinke for my completion of “CHURCH 10●19●62”

③ Blood and platelets were available every time she needed them.

④ My oldest friend calls to console me on Mom’s death and, reflect on my Aunt’s death a few weeks prior, tells me: “Things happen in threes”, not knowing that Ev’s just crashed and is in the Cardiac Cath lab with the Doctors disagreeing on what to do. I found it hard to tell him and his chagrin was funny. I laughed so hard … Well let’s just say that’s the type if thing I do. No wonder I love him.

⑤ A fun afternoon with an “older” friend who can’t stand hospitals. Great beer and wings. I gotta get back there.

⑥ She requalified for her “black label”; thanks to our “old” friends coming to visit her. That was all she was worried about. Not dying, but losing her “black label” status. That, and missing out on her pillows. ROFL!

⑦ The rapport she established with the Four North staff. She has a gift to connect with people that I just don’t have. She made them laugh. As she does me. Or used to before she got so sick. Now not so much is funny.

⑧ The rapport she established with the nurses of the SPUH Infusion Lab and other patients in the lab. She encourages others; I don’t have that skill.

⑨ The great prix fix dinner at Sea Blue when Frau Reinke was healthy enough to enjoy it and our old friends.

⑩ The few times when I’ve been able to help people with their problems, it’s been very satisfying. Like the worried old woman coming in to 4 North, and I told her she was coming to the “best floor in the hospital”. She relaxed and gave me a big smile. The nurses told me later that she was a different person after that comment. Made me feel good! Connecting folks on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Jottings.

WORST

❶ Frau Reinke hits an HG of 3 and rushed to the ICU. Several doctors give me “the talk”.

❷ Frau Reinke spends the better part of the summer and fall in RWJUH with no diagnosis. (It upsets me how the medical folks make her “my problem”. Threw her out the door, like a boomerang, and they act surprised when she comes back into them in critical, or near critical, condition.)

❸ The death of a baby, third grandchild of our “old friends”, of a blood abnormality at exactly the same time as Frau Reinke. To have potential life lost is sad. One wonders at “The Plan”?

❹ TV rental at RWJUH of almost 5 bucks a day. Parking 20$/day unil I got their Frequent Flier card. The ambulance bills from RWJUH; let them sue.

❺ The inability to get anyone to read my magnus opus “CHURCH 10●19●62”; I still cry when I read it. What could have been. That’s the story of my life. Like Rocky, “I coulda been a contender”.

❻ Continued inability to focus on much of anything but her. Writer’s block, paperwork block, diet block. Frustration!

❼ Realization that I am now unemployed / retired. I’m now a home health aide. It’s not how I expected to spend my retirement.

❽ Regret for lost opportunities! So many, makes me sad.

❾ Fender bender on the way to RWJUH!

❿ Realization of what life would be like without my soul mate. Realization of how much life has changed with her condition. Realization of how much she can’t do. Frustration with her insistence “to do it herself” and I have to clean up after.

Now it’s time to move on!

Just the other day, I was asked “Why are you a Scrooge?”

My quick one word answer was “Commercialization”.

The questioner agreed sadly.

I continued: “And, it the time of year when every parent LIES to their children. Children should KNOW that their parent is the ONE person in the world that always tells them the truth. Santa Claus exists as the famous editorial response tells us. Just that parents can’t EVER lie to their children. That’s the death of innocence and the beginning of cynicism. People wonder why youth rebel. THey’ve been lied to.
