GOVEROTRAGEOUS: SSN is your “national id”; your papers!

Drivers License And Social Security Number, Please
by eric • December 9, 2015 • 27 Comments

*** begin quote ***

Maybe you remember when Social Security numbers were “not to be used for purposes of identification.” It actually said so, right there on the card.

Well, it used to.

So much for that. As usual, per the frog in the ever-warming pot of water, we do not notice the change until it is too late to change anything.

Our SS number is now the de facto – and in a very real sense, the de jure – national ID. De facto, because it’s almost impossible to transact any business without one. De jure, because the law increasingly does require it for purposes of identification, even though the original law said it never would be used for such purposes.

*** and ***

In other words, the SSN is now officially being used for purposes of identification – just as they (the authors of Social Security, all those years ago) swore up and down it never would be. It was only going to be a government social insurance program, to keep old folks from shivering and starving in the winter. Never to be the basis for a nationwide cattle-cataloging system.

Surprise, surprise.

They lied.

*** end quote ***

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I think I have to add a new element to my mantra “Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient!”

It’s “untrustworthy”. The Gooferment, politicians, and bureaucrats all lie.

(The recent Tom Woods’ show on Hamilton demonstrated that the Federalist said what ever was needed to get the Constitution adopted and then did what the wanted any way.)

  1. My problem is “they”, the Gooferment, will use that id to march me to train destined for the “reeducation camp”.

    Dona Nobis Pacem.

    But “Molon Labe” too.

    (I am a little L libertarian; not a patsy!)

  2. I actually have no problem with having government IDs, though I might have a problem if they were required by the government for functions other than voting or taxes (well, maybe drivers’ licenses too, though that may just be my AntiDriving prejudice creeping in… :> )

We obviously have feelings around the whole concept of “Vee vant to zee your PAPERS!” stemming from Nazi and Communist area 1950s movies, and I like the idea that I can bicycle around without having to worry about having “my papers” with me at all times; but on the other hand there’s “reasonable reason” for government representatives (which would include ordinary police in this regard) being able to ask for “zee papers pleeze!” in terms of illegal immigration, terrorism, or even just the ignoring of bench warrant level problems.

Of course it could be argued that any criminal worth their salt would have a phony ID that could pass muster, but maybe the answer there is to correct that situation through better IDs. And I also recognize some conflict between my pseudo-anarchisty sentiment in my first paragraph and my desire for Big Brother protection in my second paragraph.

Dunno. If we were ever offered a real choice in the matter I’d have to think a bit more deeply about it all.

  3. BTW I just checked my recent replacement and that part is now gone! Argh!

  4. You’re correct. But the Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy.

    Laugh! Otherwise you’ll cry.

  5. Yes, for some odd reason, despite not physically having had one in my possession for at least 20 or 30 years, I clearly remember the little “Not to be used for purposes of identification” note at the bottom of my little cardboard SS card.
