Conversations
By William S. Lind
***Begin Quote***
Why does the American military so avoid informal conversations and require formal meetings and briefings? Because most of the time, the people who actually know the subject are of junior rank. Above them stands a vast pyramid of “managers,” who know little or nothing about the topic but want their “face time” as they buck for promotion. The only way they can get their time in the sun without egg on their faces is by hiding behind a formal, scripted briefing. At the end, they still have to drag up some captain or sergeant from the horse-holder ranks if questions are asked.

Guess that puts the nail in the “meeting” coffin!

ALUMNI: An idea for a real time Jasper news wire
Wednesday, March 14, 2007I woke up in the wee hours with my next great idea. A real time Jasper news wire. Born out of my computer troubles, it has always been my thought to have an easy way to assemble my weekly ezine more easily. So why not use a wordpress blog, and just “stitch” it together for the weekly readers. It would allow that fellow to only see the sections he was interested in. Have to noodle that about. But I like the idea. Real time Jasper feed.
GUNS: Only armed citizens can resist tyrannical government.

The DC Gun Ban
by Ron Paul
***Begin Quote***
Gun control historically serves as a gateway to tyranny. Tyrants from Hitler to Mao to Stalin have sought to disarm their own citizens, for the simple reason that unarmed people are easier to control. Our Founders, having just expelled the British army, knew that the right to bear arms serves as the guardian of every other right. This is the principle so often ignored by both sides in the gun control debate. Only armed citizens can resist tyrannical government.
***End Quote***
You have to like the fellow who understands the basic principle.
Governments kill unarmed citizens.
Look at Nazi Germany. Envision what would have happened when the Nazis came to collect the Jews. Even if at each apartment, the Nazis only lost ONE thug. You’d need a whole supply of new thugs. As an example look at what a handful of starving doomed people did with SIX guns and a lot of guts. The held off divisions for weeks. That’s a fifth generation war (i.e., the people against “their” government)! It’s not hard to imagine it today. Look at some of the Hollywood movies. It’ll be deadly, ugly, and bloody. But the people can never be defeated! Temporarily subjugated, maybe for decades, but never defeated.

In his second inaugural address only a few years ago, curious George asked this question: “Did our generation advance the cause of freedom? And did our character bring credit to that cause?” The jury is still out on the first question, if only because George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are inadvertently creating new libertarians at an unprecedented rate. However, the mainstream media’s breathless reporting from Washington and Houston confirms the answer to the second.
***End Quote***
One can only hope that this gives Ron Paul a fighting chance. If they are creating libertarians, that’s good for America. Not so good for all those who suckle at the government. I think there are two Americas. The American of the producers and the America of the takers. Sorry but the golden age of taking is coming to a close. The takers have killed the golden goose. This cow is tired of being milked. While I can’t go to New hampshire as part of the Free State project http://www.freestateproject.org/ … … yet. I can arrange my affairs such that I minimize the amount that can be taken. The TSA infringes rights at airports; I don’t fly. The keystone NYC cops search unreasonably; I drive in. The income tax is oppressive; I don’t strive to earn more. In sum and substance, I avoid interacting with the various criminal gangs masquerading under the guise of government. It’s a fifth generation war. The people against “their” own gooferment. It’s not mine. I do NOT consent.

Learn the secret lingo
The first phrase you need to commit to memory is “Social Security integration.” Yeah, it’s a doozy. Say it out loud several times so you don’t forget. The phrase signifies that your company uses a tricky formula to calculate your pension that in effect mingles projected Social Security earnings with your company benefit to make your future look rosier than it really is. “It can be completely devastating,” says Hotz. For example, if your pre-retirement company statement tells you you’re going to get, say, $1,000 a month as a pension, and Social Security tells you you’re going to get $1,000 a month, you may logically conclude that you’ll get $2,000 a month to live on. Instead, with Social Security integration, you could be looking at $1,500, since pension pay is reduced by up to 50 percent of the amount of Social Security you receive. About half of all companies use Social Security integration.

Wow! That’s a new one on me. Seems unfair to claim credit for social security, which one may never get, may be taxable, and could really make it harder to know where you stand.

It was the fellow’s widow and his kids calling me Evidently he had printed my high school home page and was planning to get in touch. Unfortunately the fates intervened. So they called to give me the sad news with details and I was able to express my sorrow. I promised to pass it along. That took about an hour. I was tired and made mistakes but I was able to push it before fogging out. It makes me sad. You just don’t think of it. Sigh!

Corex, the makers of a little card scanner device, evidently has seen Plaxo and decided to emulate them. It used to be that you needed to buy their scanner to get their service. Apparently that is no longer the case. You may want to avail yourself of the service.

WHEN THE government has violated the Constitution, who is entitled to complain? The Supreme Court will soon cast new light on this question in one of the most intriguing cases in recent years, a suit challenging President Bush’s “faith-based initiatives.” The legal issue may appear somewhat technical, but the outcome of the case could have broad implications for the power of the executive branch and for the relationship between government and religion.

So why do you think you should have a say in how your taxes are spent?

Shannon: Firearms will not be tolerated
By Jorge Milian
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

***Begin Quote***
CORAL GABLES — Randy Shannon has issued a straightforward warning to his University of Miami football players:
Get caught carrying a firearm and your days as a Hurricane are over.
***End Quote***
Interesting. UofM is a “state skool”. Maybe it’s not as much of one as a State University, but only Hillsdale College isn’t beholding to the gooferment.
As such, this brings up so many many issues Like separation of Government and Education? Like the proper role of “non-profit” in a civil society? Like why don’t they pay “taxes”? Like why not treat every corporation equally? Like why we permit the illusion of student athlete? Like why we allow the “skool” to make grazillions off their efforts and treat them like serfs?
But today’s issue is that wonderful tool … Sam Colt’s equalizer … the gun.
I’d say that Shannon’s statement is just flat out wrong.
What he has done is paint a bullseye on his player. Bad people will know they can’t defend themselves. He’s equated the possession of a tool with a bad intention.
If UofM is a government entity, (and it’s hard to argue that it isn’t), then he is an agent of the gooferment, and he has infringed on these player’s rights.
Regardless if they push back or not, that infringes all our rights.
The fact that the liberal media gets all gushy about this “enlightened” policy just proves how shallow they are.

We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.

The coming economic collapse of the United States

In summary, the welfare state that the socialists built here from the 1930s (after they destroyed the money supply and created an artificial depression) is going to do the same thing it did when they built it in the Soviet Union. And if their example is any guide, it won’t take until 2040 for the nation’s economy to collapse utterly. It will be sudden and unexpected. It will be horrific. Millions of Americans will die, never knowing what happened. But if you’ve read this far, you will know why: In a word, socialism.
***End Quote***
As a nation, we are heading down the road to a financial disaster. As a people, we have forgotten what made this country great. As an economy, we’ve allowed the political class to sell us down the river.
It would seem that a sound money strategy is the only way to prepare for the rocky road ahead.
We should study the prelude to the Great Depression and the German Hyperinflation as clues to what we will face.

JOBSEARCH: Don’t discount age in search time
Saturday, March 10, 2007I guess I was 40 when it first slapped me in the face. A Wall Street HR type, bluntly, unprofessionally, and oblivious to the fact I might be wired, told me to my face that I was “too old” for Wall Street.
Actually the bozo did my a favor.
I immediately updated my emergency fund formula with a factor for age. I put a multiplier in the calculation that guesstimated weeks to find a paycheck that was age specific.
(It’s currently still set at 30=1/40=1.5/45=2/50=3/55=4/60=5/65=6! I have no idea if that is the right setting, but you should see the newly minted turkeys eyes bug out when they catch a glimpse of that.)
In actuality, I am coming to the realization that at 65, all you’ll get is my career aspiration — to be the old fogy that’s the WalMart greeter. Seriously, maybe then I’ll get over being an introvert.
Point of emphasis, I think at these advanced ages, you ARE after all just one step from the nursing home and another step away from the grave, only likely to succeed in your own business.
As Amerika grays, I think those that can grasp the prejudice, like a nettle, will succeed. The rest will be eating dogfood and playing mahjong at some retirement village in lower slobbobia.
Depressing. “I coulda been a contenda!”

D.C. Gun Ban Ruled Unconstitutional, Violates Individual Right To Own A Gun
Friday, March 09, 2007
***Begin Quote***
This week, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Second Amendment is an individual right and concluded that the District of Columbia’s ban on guns in the home is unconstitutional. According to the majority opinion, “[T]he phrase ‘the right of the people’…leads us to conclude that the right in question is individual.”
***End Quote***
In a victory for all the little people of the District, our right was affirmed.
Now let’s see what roadblocks the “state uber alles” throws in everyone’s way.
I find it hard to believe that it was 2-1. Send that judge back to private life. I bet she has an armed security detail everywhere she goes. Taxpayer funded of course. If I was a citizen of the District, then I’ve have demanded her recall. (Yes, it’s a she. Appointed by Regan!)
Of course, if I was a citizen of DC, I’d have moved eons ago.
Let’s face facts. Most of DC’s violence is caused by the “War on Drugs”. End drug prohibition and you’d end the violence. End the various wars on nonsense (drugs, gambling, prostitution, and all “victimless” crimes) and it would be a peace in minutes.
What does an out of work drug dealer do?
End welfare, absurd taxation, and ridiculous regulation as well.
You’d have a city that would rival Singapore in a matter of “minutes”. People would be moving to DC as opposed to fleeing from it.
And, maybe bribing politicians wouldn’t be its only industry.
With a tax, regulatory, and legal environment like that maybe we could make something useful there.
One can only dream!
JOBSEARCH: Handicapping jobsearch / networking tools. Everything has value.
Friday, March 9, 2007In alpha order:
* ACT is a true CRM, does email, but doesn’t sync like Plaxo, and doesn’t interface with LinkedIn. No support.
* JibberJobber is an up and comer. It is a true Web20 application, allows you to get your data in and out, doesn’t do email, but is more like a CRM for jobsearch. And, the support is responsive. (This is my current front runner.)
* LICM is not CRM, has a harder interface, and is tough to get into. It depends upon LinkedIn. Has support.
* LinkedIn (MySpace for Business) enforces its model of networking, doesn’t allow you to input stuff, and doesn’t make it easy to keep your data. It doesn’t talk to anything else. Support unresponsive for the most part.
* Outlook is ugly, but it does email. (I’ve tried the BCM addon and it was terrible.) Microsoft and support in the same sentence; that’s a joke.
* Plaxo syncs but not much else. (But its vendor never claimed it was a CRM.) Has good support.
* ZIGGS20 is really slow, brain dead, ugly, doesn’t sync, and appears to be a dead end. Data in but it doesn’t come out. No support.
