House Shutdown Vote

The House reconvenes today and is expected to vote on a Senate bill to reopen the government. The vote comes on the 43rd day of the US’ longest shutdown.

Seven Democrats and one independent joined 52 Republicans to pass the Senate bill, which would fund much of the government through January. The Agriculture Department—which facilitates SNAP food benefits to 42 million Americans—would be funded through September 2026. The bill does not extend COVID-era healthcare subsidies for 24 million people who purchase plans under the Affordable Care Act. Democratic leaders had sought to make reopening the government conditional on extending those subsidies, due to expire Dec. 31. ACA marketplace premiums are projected to rise up to 30%, from 18%, without an extension. Federal health subsidies cost an estimated $1.8T in 2023, roughly 7% of the US gross domestic product.

Separately, airlines canceled an estimated 6% of flights at 40 of the US’ busiest airports yesterday amid ongoing air traffic controller shortages.

Why is the Gooferment regulating and operating “Aviation”?

It should ONLY be regulating as necessary. Clearly a consortium of commercial airlines could do a better job and cheaper. Surely a private entity would not be running on 1950’s hardware and software. Additionally, the Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. As well as untrustworthy. So, there would be efficiencies and cost reductions.

This goes for Air Traffic Control and Airports.

Now there would have to be some role for “private aviation” and “military aviation” in this consortium. But those details can be worked out between the parties involved.

Airports would be just like any other corporate establishment regulated by the state or local Gooferment.

I can see a much better future once we #privatizetheFAA!

Back Pay Uncertainty

President Donald Trump signaled yesterday that furloughed federal workers may not be guaranteed retroactive compensation when the government reopens, a potential shift from previous policy that covered roughly 750,000 employees.

I remember that Gooferment employees would tell me that they’re 100% secure in their Gooferment GS13 position.  Wonder how they would evaluate that now with DOGE chainsawing whole departments and agencies.  I used have heated discussions with those poor confused souls that “Nothing is 100% risk free”.  I pointed to my and my mother’s experiences at AT&T.  We both had “gold watch” syndrome (i.e., the good corporation would care for its valued people from cradle to grave).  I took the buyout and she didn’t.  And she never realized that the “rules” had changed.

Seems like a past prediction is coming back to haunt Gooferment bureaucrats.

No matter what you want to believe, reality intrudes.

Sad to say, “told you so”, but as a recovering “gold watch” syndrome victim myself, you can’t trust your future to anyone but yourself.

MONEY: The Federal Reserve has been unable to “provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system”

Federal Reserve Cuts Rates

The Federal Reserve announced a quarter-percentage-point cut in benchmark rates yesterday, bringing the range to between 4% and 4.25%—the lowest level in almost three years. The bank signaled the possibility of two additional cuts this year.

The decision saw the Federal Reserve prioritizing a hiring slowdown over inflation. A sluggish 22,000 jobs were added last month; weekly jobless claims reached their highest level in four years last week. The US has also downwardly revised job growth by 911,000 for the one-year period ending in March. Those concerns trumped sticky inflation, with consumer prices rising 2.9% annually last month.

The bank voted 11-1 in yesterday’s decision, with the only dissenter being newly appointed Fed Governor Stephen Miran, who preferred a half-point cut. Governor Lisa Cook participated in the meeting after an appeals court ruled the White House lacked authority to fire her. The White House plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.

“Only government can take perfectly good paper, cover it with perfectly good ink and make the combination worthless.” — Milton Friedman

"Paper money eventually returns to it's intrinsic value, zero ...

Why do we have a “Federal Reserve Bank”?

The Federal Reserve Bank is a misnomer. IT ain’t “federal”. It reserves nothing. And, it ain’t a “bank”. It is a private cartel of the elite banks run for their benefit and that of the entrenched politicians.

Why do we need them to “set” interest rates?

We don’t,  In essence, they are “price fixers”.  And, as we know, no one can know the correct “price” of anything.  The free market allows buyers and sellers to set a price where they are both “satisfied”.  Otherwise, it “win-win” or “no deal”.

Why is there one “prime rate” of interest?

Because that allows the Gooferment to manipulate the market.  By hiding the “true cost” of money (i.e., the interest rate), buyers and sellers are making decision based on a fiction.  Everyone loses.

Why do we have “inflation”?

Milton Friedman: ‘Inflation is taxation without legislation.’  The FED “prints” money and the market reacts to the change in “the supply of dollars”.  It’s a silent thief that steals wealth from everyone who has an “old dollar” especially the poor, those on fixed incomes, and savers.

# – # – # – # – #

As gun-owning pro-life pro-choice little L libertarian, the market for money should be free from Gooferment.  The Federal Reserve has been unable to “provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system” which is its intended purpose.  So let’s follow Andrew Jackson’s lead and end the Federal Reserve Bank.

FYI, he was the last President to have zero debt.

Argh!

HEALTHCARE: Here’s proof that postpartum depression has a physical manifestation

Postpartum Neurology

Women with postpartum depression symptoms exhibited corresponding shifts in the size of certain brain regions, according to a study this week. The study provides the first neurological evidence of the condition’s impact, which affects as much as one in seven pregnant women worldwide.

Researchers analyzed a series of brain scans of 88 first-time mothers without a history of depression. They then compared the images to answers given in standard questionnaires used to diagnose postpartum depression. Nearly 30 women who showed moderate to severe symptoms of the condition saw enlargement of the amygdala and hippocampus, key regions of the brain that regulate emotion. Whether the enlarged anatomy causes the depression or vice versa remains unclear.

The condition has been studied for centuries, though data has stemmed from reported experiences rather than anatomical observations. Severe postpartum depression typically manifests as extreme mood swings, extended periods of sadness, and loss of sleep, and its severity distinguishes it from milder, more common “baby blues.”

So this is another finding that it’s “not in your head” psychosomatic craziness.  It’s a real demonstrable physical symptom.

Do we have to revisit all the baby killings by moms with baby blues?

VETERANS: 11 souls finally found — the terrible price of war

World War II Veteran Recovered

The remains of a missing World War II veteran have been recovered and identified at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The expedition—213 feet below the surface—is the US government’s deepest underwater recovery operation to date.

On March 11, 1944, a B-24 bomber known as “Heaven Can Wait” was shot down over Papua New Guinea. The aircraft—carrying 11 US service members—was en route to bomb Japanese anti-aircraft weapons on the island’s northeast coast. Early last year, Navy divers recovered the dog tags and remains of 2nd Lt. Thomas V. Kelly Jr.—a 21-year-old aviator from California. The remains of two other veterans—radio operator Eugene J. Darrigan, 26, and navigator 2nd Lt. Donald W. Sheppick, 26—were identified earlier this year.

The mission came about after Kelly’s family members conducted an extensive research project from 2013 to 2017, gathering historical documents and eyewitness accounts to narrow the wreckage search.

It’s important that every effort be made to find and bring out vets home.

One thing that is drilled into our military is “Never leave a comrade behind”.  I learned it when I was in training and I hope it’s still taught.

I watch for these stories as a fulfillment of that ethic.  Unfortunately, the politicians and bureaucrats, some who are “perfumed princes” in the Pentagon, fail in this duty.

In the movies, it was best expressed by “We Were Soldiers” Hero, Hal Moore.

“I can’t promise you that I will bring you all home alive. But this I swear, before you and before Almighty God, that when we go into battle, I will be the first to set foot on the field, and I will be the last to step off, and I will leave no one behind. Dead or alive, we will all come home together. So help me, God.”  — Mel Gibson playing Lt. Col. Hal Moore in “We Were Soldiers”.

I know the Conspiracy Theories that we left living POWs in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam.  I hope that they are not true.  And, I hope we are busting heads to confirm or deny.

The way we, the USA, treat our veterans is a national disgrace.

Shame on us.

“Some had families waiting. For others, their only family would be the men they bled beside. There were no bands, no flags, no Honor Guards to welcome them home. They went to war because their country ordered them to. But in the end, they fought not for their country or their flag, they fought for each other.”  — Barry Pepper as Joe Galloway in “We Were Soldiers”

RANT: Russian missile barrage hit a children’s hospital? Could it have been a false flag?

Tuesday, July 9, 2024

FROM 1440 NEWS

Good headline but text “Russian missile barrage” was bad. Could it have been a false flag? Remember Ukraine shot a missile into Poland and blamed Russia. The timing is too convenient and the Russians have been extremely careful about what they hit and very circumspect about firing back.

I’d say the facts are not yet fully known to assign blame.

IMHO

Missiles Strike Ukraine

At least 36 civilians were killed and more than 100 wounded across Ukraine after a Russian missile barrage hit multiple targets yesterday, including the country’s largest children’s hospital in the capital of Kyiv. The daytime attack is considered the heaviest single-day bombardment in the last four months of the Russia-Ukraine war, which is now in its 29th month (see updates).

Ukraine’s air defenses shot down 30 of the 38 missiles, with officials saying the weapons consisted of aerial, ballistic, and cruise missiles (see the difference). At least 50 civilian buildings were damaged across central and eastern Ukraine by Russia’s airstrikes. The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting today to address the strikes.

Russia’s latest attack comes as Western leaders will meet in Washington, DC, today to kick off a three-day NATO summit. The agenda includes discussions over Ukraine’s potential membership in the military alliance and a new support package.

Ukraine Bombs Its Own Children’s Hospital and British Journal Says Palestinian Death Toll is Astronomical
8 July 2024 by Larry Johnson

This is a ten on both the hypocrisy and propaganda scales. Check it for yourself. Do an internet search on the following — “Ukraine strikes Sevastopol.” Only cursory coverage. No blaring headlines in the NY Times or Financial Times or any other major paper. Ignore it. But this? Intense coverage.

Only one problem with the story — it is BULLSHIT. The children’s hospital was hit by an errant air defense missile fired by Ukraine. Whoops! What is really telling is that there was ZERO news coverage of the other sites hit by Russian missiles in Kiev. You know why? Because they were military targets and there were probably Western casualties. Russia delivered this blow in daylight during working hours in order to inflict maximum casualties on those engaged in producing or repairing weapons.

Ukrainian authorities also lied about the number of Russian missiles shot down. The Ukie Air Force claimed it downed 30 of 38 Russian missiles. Check out the following videos. You can see at least five successful Russian missile strikes in Kiev, including some secondary explosions, which normally are associated with a weapons storage facility. (We’ll see how long YouTube allows the first video to stay online. I will also post on BitChute.)

Description:

Agriculture and reforestation: Bioinspired seed carrier improves on nature.

Aerial seeding is a crucial way to cover large and otherwise inaccessible areas, and can facilitate post-fire reforestation or wildland restoration. However, when a seed lies on the surface, it can be damaged by weather conditions or eaten by wildlife, resulting in low germination rates. Seeds of various grass species can self-bury, an ability that would be advantageous if applied to different seed types.

A new biodegradable seed carrier design inspired by the self-drilling behaviour of Erodium seeds is described in a paper in Nature. The seed carrier has a higher implantation success rate than that of Erodium seeds. This technology may improve the effectiveness of aerial seeding to address agricultural and environmental stresses in degraded regions.

Wow, what feat of engineering.  Very impressive.  A six minute video is worth watching.

How little we know and how little we exploit what is from of our eye.

Trees on Mars is a little farfetched, but for reforestation it seems unbelievable.

I see the list of Gooferment grants funding this and unlike most of the ridiculed one (like why do fish mate), this one seems like a real winner.

Guess that excuses at least 100 boondoggles.
