How “cell tower dumps” caught the High Country Bandits—and why it matters
Fishing expeditions can pay dividends—but do they need a warrant?
by Nate Anderson – Aug 29 2013, 8:00am EDT

*** begin quote ***

Cell tower dumps don’t provide the precision of GPS tracking, of course, but they can in some cases provide directional and range information from a specific tower at a specific time—close enough to pin people within a few hundred yards. Because warrant applications often remain sealed, however, even judges rarely know how other judges have ruled on them; Owsley was reduced to asking judges he met at conferences whether they had encountered the issue, which is becoming increasingly common.

In the end, Owsley supports the use of tower dumps, so long as agents seek a warrant first and so long as they explain their plan to purge all numbers not germane to the current case. In addition, he argues that those whose records are swept up should be notified after the fact—especially because the records have a bad habit of ending up as evidence in court cases.

*** end quote ***

A civil libertarian, like this little L libertarian, is always concerned when the Gooferment starts “fishing”.

In this particular case, I find no fault with what was done or the process.

Maybe they could work on doing it “faster”.

I have little sympathy for criminals. In this case with the facts given, the police seem to have done it “right”.

I’m not sure I understand the need to notify all the “discarded” numbers. Maybe some one can explain?

CLOUD: Google’s new “Remind Me”

Check out Google’s new “Remind Me” feature for TV shows, authors, and more
Easily follow your favorite media properties in Google Now.
by Ron Amadeo – Aug 30 2013, 5:51pm EDT

*** begin quote ***

The “Remind Me” button works in search results on mobile and desktop, and the cards will show up in the Google search app for Android or iOS. You can view and remove your current reminder subscriptions from the “My Reminders” setting in Google Now or by searching for it again.

A reminders app is always useful, but a cloud-powered reminders app has more potential. Here’s hoping Google adds a bunch more supported categories (like sports teams). App integration would be great, too. Just scan my Play Music library for all favorite artists and add them as reminders. This should be live for everyone by now, so try searching!

*** end quote ***

After the Google Reader fiasco, I am reluctant to get excited about ANY Google “service”.

Plus TV is dependent upon which market and service you’re in at any given time.

And, a “reminder” to watch TV is counter to the whole “turn of the boob tube” meme.

Now a better way to stalk … err, I mean, track Taylor Swift’s << @twsift13 #tswift13 #tswift >> activities. That could be useful to this fat old Swiftie.

Cold call victim forces telemarketers to pay him by using premium number
“I want cold calls,” says man previously annoyed by telemarketers.
by Jon Brodkin – Aug 29 2013, 11:29am EDT

*** begin quote ***

A British man fed up with cold calls from telemarketers set up a premium phone number in November 2011 and has made £300 by accepting calls and keeping the annoying marketers on the line as long as possible.
Lee Beaumont, who works at home in Leeds, UK, was getting calls at all times of the day. “I thought there must be a way to make money off these phone calls,” he told the BBC. He searched on Google and found a small company that charged him £10 (about $15.50) to set up an 0871 line (equivalent to a 900 line in the US), which forces people who call him to pay 10p per minute. Of that, he receives 7p (about 10.9¢).

RANT: No military action in Syria

Saturday, August 31, 2013

Subject: Defend America only. Do not manipulate or police the world.

http://www.downsizedc.org/etp/world-police/

Dear Politician:

Defend America only. Do not manipulate or police the world.

Take immediate action to prevent President Obama from launching any military action in Syria.

The President is trying to fix something that cannot be solved by outsiders dropping bombs. This will not protect innocent people. It will kill innocents. Their blood will be on the President’s hands, and on your hands, unless you use your powers to resist.

Take Sarah Pallin’s counsel: “Let Allah sort it out.”

Is it tragic? Yes. But to quote some way: “There are many problems in this world, and some of them are mine.”

Be like the Swiss: MYOB! Blessed are the peacemakers. Peacemakers don’t start wars.

NH: The Free State Project

Friday, August 30, 2013

http://futuremoneytrends.com/blog/?p=5808

At Freedom Fest in July 2013, NH State Representative, Mark Warden, who is a Free State Project participant, small business owner and Realtor, was interviewed for the Future Money Trends blog. Says Warden: “The Free State Project is an amazing idea and concept that is just now coming to life.” You can read the transcript and watch the full interview

# – # – #

“Yeah, thanks for asking. The Free State Project is an amazing idea and concept that is just now coming to life. It’s a geopolitical movement with liberty-minded people, we could call them “small l” libertarians, some anarchists, people who really truly believe in less government, lower taxes, and more individual freedom, are moving to the state of New Hampshire. The original concept would say, “Okay let’s choose a small state that’s relatively low population,” and the original people who that committed to make this move chose New Hampshire as the destination. So eventually we’ll get 20,000 people to move. Once we have 20,000 people who have signed up, then that triggers the move, and people will start moving. However, some of us didn’t want to wait that long and we just went. So I moved from Las Vegas, Nevada six years ago, and 1,200 others have moved from all over the country and other parts of the world to New Hampshire to bring about liberty in our lifetime.”

If you’d told me that the tree fruit I’d have the most success growing in Central New Hampshire was peaches, I would have called you crazy – but you’d have been right.

While my apple trees that I planted a few years ago are looking terrible, my pear trees got destroyed by an unknown assailant, and my apricot tree went from looking-like-it-was-thriving to I-think-it’s-totally-dead in a span of 3 rainy weeks this spring, my 2 peach trees have been steady producers for the second year in a row.

*** end quote ***

Since I am going to New Hampshire soon — as soon as I can or no later than after the Free State Project gets the last of its 20k movers — and I’ve been thinking I’d like to “buy the farm”.

In a literal sense; not the military sense.

But in some respects, this will be my LAST move.

Teach, politics, and / or maybe farm.

My model will be George Washington. (Now all I need is a rich widow!)

I found this instructive since I was figuring fruit was “easy”.

Maybe pineapples?

RANT: Death Penalty is cruel, unusual, immoral, ineffective, and inefficient

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Hasan Sentenced to Death in Fort Hood Shooting
A jury of U.S. Army officers sentenced Nidal Hasan to death for a mass shooting at Fort Hood in 2009 that ranks among the most worst soldier-on-soldier killings in the history of the nation’s military.

The sentence brings to a close a court martial in which the 42-year-old Army major offered essentially no defense to the Nov. 5, 2009, attack, in which 13 people were killed and 31 others injured. Maj. Hasan was convicted Friday of multiple counts of premeditated murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting.

How to Get Inspiring Ideas for Starting a Part-time Business
http://investorjunkie.com/30651/ideas-starting-parttime-business/

*** begin quote ***

But before getting started, any part-time business venture should work within the following parameters:

It should not conflict with your full-time job (i.e., it won’t cause you to be fired)

It shouldn’t require a lot of capital to get started

It should be within the realm of your skills, abilities and interests

You should have at least some knowledge of the profession or industry (if not, get some before you start)

It needs to be doable on a part-time basis — not all businesses are

*** end quote ***

Jason Alba of JibberJobber has the idea that the future belongs to those who can have ten part-time jobs.

Each consisting of 4 hours each on average and that generate 10% of your desired income.

He’s not ruthless about any of the numbers; just the concept.

I’ve tried that when I was consulting and it was pretty effective as long as you could keep the sales funnel full.

The hard part was doing just that.

Still, I think he is correct. Especially as I see the may employers treat employees.

MEMORIES: Saturday’s shopping adventure

Monday, August 26, 2013

One of Frau Reinke’s favorite days was “back to school” shopping day. It’s was her chance to spoil children and share their simple joy in new duds.

(As a fat old white guy injineer, I could care less about clothes. Shopping is just torture. And “skrule” was cruel and unusual punishment by some Yack in the Box!)

She directed me to carry on and gave me my instructions. I promised. So last Saturday, I did it again for her.

Funny! Nothing like a dirty old man wandering around young girls clothing stores. At least, when I was carrying a bag or two, I didn’t feel so self-conscious.

Any way, I write this post to share two serendipitous moments.

The first store we hit had music and the tune that played after our arrival was Taylor Swift’s @tswift13 “You Belong With Me”. I took that as an omen to encourage me to relax and enjoy the moment.

The day went on to its eventual conclusion when even a tween gets tired of “shopping”.

So I rewarded myself with some time at the AL410 for a Met’s loss, a Yank’s loss, and a few adult beverages.

Closing the joint, I headed home to “do” Jasper Jottings. I was strangely hungry. So I ducked into McD’s. (Yeah, I know non-primal carbs after 7PM.) Gotta Big Mac.

Home, ate, Jottings, sack!

This morning I looked at the McD receipt. It’s number 247.

That was Our Girl’s favorite-est number.

Was that a message from the Universe?

Like well done, well pleased.

Or just coincidence?

You decide. I know what I’d like to believe.

(2) I didn’t make it big!

(3) I didn’t strangle the docs that “practiced” on Our Girl.

My regrets are even more for my Mom:

(1) She didn’t get Aunt Marion’s farm. (Maybe I can get my own.)

(2) She didn’t realize the risks of a war time romance.

(3) She didn’t see my Dad’s vision of life as better?

Regrets are dumb.

(1) Life is not a VCR with a rewind function.

(2) We make our own choices; looking back is like driving by looking in the rear view mirror.

(3) All you do is make yourself unhappy.

RANT: Free Competition in Currency Act of 2013

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Letterhead
August 23, 2013
Mr. Ferdinand Reinke
1641 International Dr Unit 414
McLean, VA 22102-4831

Dear Mr. Reinke:

Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 77. I appreciate hearing from you.

H.R. 77, the Free Competition in Currency Act of 2013, was introduced by Representative Paul Broun on January 3, 2013 and was referred to the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law. This legislation would allow any metal coins issued by a government or individual to be legally accepted currency.

The Federal Reserve System was established in 1913 to provide stability in the banking system through the regulation of bank reserves. It is the central bank of the United States and formulates the nation’s monetary policy, with a dual mandate of fostering maximum employment and price stability. It is also the “lender of last resort” in our nation’s financial system. Its record reflects its commitment to promoting low levels of inflation and unemployment, as well as maintaining economic stability.

The Fed is purchasing $85 billion in assets each month in an effort to stimulate spending and spur investment in businesses and homes. These asset purchases are known as quantitative easing (QE). There is uncertainty about the Fed’s ability to unwind from QE without some financial or economic disruption, including inflation. However, currently inflation and inflation expectations remain low; consumer prices rose 2% in July 2013, compared to a year earlier.

Since August 2012, the Fed has released quarterly financial statements in addition to its annual reports, in response to demands for accountability and openness. I think this is an important step and believe we will continue to see such measures from the Fed in the future.

Thank you again for contacting me with your views.

Sincerely,

Signature

Tim Kaine

TINFOILHAT: JFK Assassination; End of the American Republic?

The JFK Assassination Marked the End of the American Republic
Interview with Martin Broeckers, author of JFK: Coup d’Etat in America“
By Lars Schall
Global Research
August 21, 2013

*** begin quote ***

On occasion of the publication of his latest book, German author Mathias Broeckers talks about the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963, which he sees as a coup d’etat that was never rolled back.

Mathias Broeckers, born 1954, is a German investigative journalist and the author of more than ten books, most of them related to the topics of drugs, terrorism and deep politics. He works for the daily German newspaper TAZ and the webzine Telepolis. His latest book, “JFK: Staatsstreich in Amerika” (“JFK: Coup d’Etat in America“), was published this August at Westend Verlag in Frankfurt, Germany.

*** and ***

LS: If one looks at the crime from the perspective of “motive, means, opportunity,” which groups are the most likely culprits? Some of the usual suspects may have had a motive, but neither the means nor the opportunity, right?

MB: Yes. This is a crucial point with many JFK theories. A lot of people had motives, be it the hardcore commies in Russia, China, Cuba, be it the Israelis because of JFKs dismissal of nukes in Israel, be it the Federal Reserve because of his idea for a new US dollar backed by silver, the mob because of his dismissal to invade Cuba to get their casinos and brothels back, the racist Southerners because of his engagement for civil rights… but no one of them had the means and opportunity for the murder and above all the means to cover it up over the years.

*** and ***

LS: Why does the death of JFK still matter?

MB: It’s the most important crime in the second half of the 20th century, it is still unsolved and it marked in a way the end of the American Republic. Since then the financial-military-industrial complex rules and no president after JFK had the balls to challenge that. There is, in the words of Gore Vidal, “a one-party-system with two right-wings”; there are corporate media brainwashing the population 24/7 and propagating wars for global imperial dominance; there are covert operations all over the world to ensure this dominance – and this will go on and on as long the truth about the covert operation, the coup d’ état, against JFKs presidency is kept hidden.

*** end quote ***

I never heard that JFK was advocating for a “silver dollar”.

I never bought into the Warren Commission’s “magic bullet”.

I know that Marines can shoot, but not with that weapon and all those variables.

So what is someone to do?

I think one becomes very cynical about anything anything politicians and bureaucrats say, advocate, or propose.

The answer to them should always be “No”!

Read The Bill, One Subject at Time, and the other proposals will never be accepted because the “two parties” are really just one!

Secession.

Hard money.

And, prepare for the collapse and crash.

Then, be prepared to rebuild.

5 Surprising Health Benefits of Hemp
Brandi, selected from Diets in Review
August 17, 2013

*** begin quote ***

Hemp has always had trouble stepping out of the shadow of its dirty cousin marijuana. While it is closely related to whacky tobaccy, hemp has microscopic amounts of THC — the chemical in marijuana that gets you high — and eating hemp foods won’t jeopardize your next drug test. The health benefits of hemp are so vast that people are beginning to abandon the antiquated stereotypes of the versatile plant.

Sharon Palmer, author of The Plant Powered Diet, wasn’t wasting her breath when she said, “I think hemp is the next ‘it’ food — it has been for a while.” The hemp seed is bursting with Omega-6 and Omega-3, essential fatty acids that have heart health and anti inflammatory benefits. Hemp seeds are nutty in flavor and breathe life into salads, desserts, yogurts, cereals, and breads. Hemp seeds can be turned into butter, milk, protein powder, finishing oil, and soap.

Unfortunately, Uncle Sam outlawed hemp farming in 1958, a shame when you consider how amazing a crop it is. The plant thrives without pesticides, purifies the soil around it, and kills weeds. The U.S. is the only country that bans industrial hemp farming, quelling what could be an agricultural and financial boon for our indebted country.

*** end quote ***

How about we get the Gooferment out of farming?

Why do we have a “Department of Agriculture” any way?

Oh yeah, that’s right we need to reward “crony farmers” who make contributions to politicians.

Why can’t we feed the world with our exports?

Argh!

The Lesson Of India’s Gold Saga
Gold Silver Worlds | August 20, 2013 | Category: Physical Market

*** begin quote ***

The Indian rupee hit a record low yesterday. The Indian government’s efforts did not succeed to stop its decline. What’s more, bond yields surged to five-year highs driven by market forces. Reuters writes:

Efforts to prop up the currency, which has tumbled nearly 13 percent against the dollar this year, have thus far proved ineffective, making it the worst performer in emerging Asia and threatening to drive the region’s third-largest economy towards a full-blown crisis.

The long term chart of the Indian rupee says it all. Pay special attention to the evolution since the end of 2011 and particularly the last months of this year

*** and ***

Linked to their currency debasement is the growing current account deficit. In an attempt to solve this, the country issued several sanctions to discourage their currency flowing into gold. We described for instance in Indian Government Desperately Tries To Discourage Gold Demand several import taxes. More recently, Indian officials increased the gold import duty to 10%. Needless to say that gold imports have almost frozen in the past couple of weeks.

Vancouver, British Columbia — Michael Hallatt has spent more than $350,000 at Trader Joe’s in less than two years. But the popular grocery chain doesn’t ever want to see him again.

*** and ***

“I don’t think Trader Joe’s really has a chance, suing here in the U.S.,” said lawyer Greg Owen, a trademark, copyright and unfair competition expert with Owen, Wickersham & Erickson, an intellectual property firm in San Francisco.

If Trader Joe’s had sued in Canada, or if Pirate Joe’s were operating in the United States, the claim might be more viable, said Owen, who reviewed the lawsuit and motion to dismiss. He added, however, that the first-sale doctrine, which Hallatt is fond of citing and which lets people resell what they’ve bought, is more nebulous when perishable items are involved.

Interesting. Maybe Trader Joes will go to “licensing” their products. Like all the software companies want to do!

I had thought they’d hire the guy to be in charge of their Canadian roll out.

I, personally, don’t like Trader Joes. It’s like a yuppie 7-11 with prices to match.

Here’s is another reason to ignore them.

“This is the part of the show where I dispense a little of what I call rough justice!” … attributed to Judge Marilyn Milian, but may have an earlier history.

I’d urge everyone to give Trader Joes a little “rough justice”. Just skip the place and you’ll save yourself some money too.
