IDAHO
Federal cyanide trap injures eastern Idaho boy, kills dog
Published March 17, 2017  Associated Press

*** begin quote ***

POCATELLO, Idaho –  An eastern Idaho sheriff says he’s investigating after a cyanide trap placed by federal authorities to kill coyotes injured a 14-year-old boy and killed his dog.

*** end quote ***

While there are a lot of questions still outstanding:

  • was it an accident
  • was the boy tresspassing on private land
  • was it posted
  • were there warning signs

The point remains!

Where in the Constitution does the Federal Gooferment have any authorization to kill anything outside of a declared war?

At best, coyotes are a state level problem. At worst, this is the Federal over-reach and even maybe </tin foil hat> an ‘experiment’ (Yeah, like you never heard of  the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male<tin foil hat/>.

GOLD: Return to the gold standard to discipline Gooferment spending

President Trump: Replace The Dollar With Gold As The Global Currency To Make America Great Again
Ralph Benko,   CONTRIBUTOR

*** begin quote ***

As Paul-Martin Foss of the Menger Center astutely points out the Federal Reserve Board currently has three vacancies. If Trump were to fill those vacancies with three sophisticated gold standard advocates from the short list of Lewis E. Lehrman (whose eponymous Institute I formerly served), Dr. Judy Shelton (who served as an advisor on his presidential economic transition team), former presidential candidate Steve Forbes, and John Allison, former CEO of BB&T (preferably as vice chairman for regulation) the president would create a super “beachhead team” at the Fed to seriously restore equitable prosperity.

These appointments would be the safe and sure first steps out of economic stagnation for America. Couple these with a White House “Team B” to plan the enactment of the Jack Kemp Gold Standard Act and removal of the regulatory and tax barriers to using gold as currency. Then watch an American economic miracle take place.

Mr. President: “No such thing as a global currency?” The dollar is the global currency. Want prosperity? Heed Chairman Greenspan and do not just view but restore “gold as the primary global currency.” President Trump: replace the dollar with gold as the global currency to make America great again. We have the gold.

*** end quote ***

Politicians are addicted to fiat money — they print as much as they can spend.

The USA will NEVER return to prosperity without fiscal discipline.

Argh!

And the current 18T+ national debt and the guesstimated 200T+ in unfunded liabilities that our posterity will have to deal with will certainly sink this “Titanic”.

Argh!

WSJ: Thinking about celebrities making political statements

Monday, February 27, 2017

TODAY’S QUESTION
Going back to our story above, what do you think about celebrities making political statements at award shows? Send your comments, which we may edit before publication, to 10point@wsj.com. Please include your name and location.

I don’t think much about “celebrity” opinions. They are just that “opinions” and like analsphincters, everyone has one.

These “court jesters” mistake there financial success at entertaining with the “fatal conceit” that they know it all.

When Princess Di was out digging up land mines or showcasing children’s charities, she was a “celebrity” whose opinion carried weight and I’d listen to it. Ditto the Dali Lama, Mother Theresa, and a few select others.

When Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio jet around and lecture us on “global warming”, “climate change”, or “carbon footprint”, I pay those hypocrites no mind at all.

When the “celebrities” go anti-Trump, I just tune them out.

They’re just noisy losers who can’t remember who pays their salaries.

Argh!

WSJ: Noticed an increase in drivers using their smartphones?

TODAY’S QUESTION

Have you noticed an increase in drivers using their smartphones? Send your comments, which we may edit before publication, to 10point@wsj.com. Please include your name and location.

*** end quote ***

Yes I see it. Sometimes I don’t believe it. Like on an interstate at 80 mphs. Other times, who cares like at a red light. Hopefully, the auto will catch up and allow more of us to interact with the phone like we do with the radio — eyes on the road. Personally, I put the phone on the passenger side floor so that even if tempted I can’t peek. I do enjoy listening to Tom Woods or Jason Stapleton podcasts and those keep me focused on the road. And not be lulled into boredom.

INTERESTING: The “fog of war”?

Monday, February 6, 2017

Last night, I was at the American Legion #401 watching Super Bowl #51. Large amounts of adult refreshments were consumed by various individuals in vary amounts. There was food; lots of it. Otherwise, the alcohol would have taken over. O, of course, as sober as a judge, watched the game with interest.

Now bear in mind, this was mostly an anti-Brady anti-Pats pro-ATL crowd. But I in my cool injineeering logical mind reasoned that: (1) Brady was up to that game playing like a man possessed; (2) most of the talking heads were picking the Pats; and (3) for most of the week, the “line” never moved.

So I “predicted” to any all who would listen that this would be a good game with lots of scoring and that the ball was going to get frequent flier miles from being tossed around so much.

I was even so bold as to predict the score 35-32 Pats — total 67 points over the Vegas 59½.

I admit when I heard about the 1M$ bet on ATL, my courage was shaken. I blissfully stuck to my prediction.

ANYWAY to the “fog of war” point, when at the end of the 4th Quarter with a tied score, confusion reigned. I heard at least SIX different explanations of the overtime rules from “knowledgeable” patron, who completely drowned out the TV. (Although, I thought I heard the ref and the talking heads gobbledy gook and thought it was wrong. Only ONE of the SIX explanations I KNEW was wrong — game would not end in a tie. I just admitted I did NOT know the Super Bowl rules.

So we all watched Brady lead the Pats to a touchdown and the game ended.

Every one was stunned.

I learned another valuable lesson — in addition to my rule of never bet on anything that talks — in the “fog of war”, no one knows what they are talking about. Probably even me.

Laugh!

POLITICAL: Go to Mars, but keep the Gooferment out of it

Saturday, February 4, 2017

PUT PEOPLE ON MARS BY 2033—FOR THE GOOD OF THE NATION

*** begin quote ***

And exploring Mars is achievable under reasonably expected future budget allocations for NASA. During the space race under President Kennedy and then President Johnson’s leadership, NASA claimed 4 percent of the overall federal budget. Today, NASA’s budget is 0.5 percent of the federal budget; the agency receives about $19 billion per year, of which about $8 billion is spent on human space flight. With the right approach and planning, including a potential handoff of the International Space Station to a commercial entity, these funds could be redirected for a successful human mission to Mars. Our leaders in Washington could speed up the timeline for a successful mission, and national victory, with additional investments.

*** end quote ***

I don’t see NASA as a spectacular success story.

Having read all the Heinlein books in my youth, I keep wondering where we went wrong.

I grew up “believing” and still no nuclear power, no folks in space, and a debauched fiat currency that has lost most of its value in my lifetime.

Argh!

I conclude it’s ALL Gooferment’s fault. The politicians and bureaucrats have robbed the people blind. The Crony Capitalists have feathered their nest and left the ordinary people in tatters.

So let entrepreneurs lead us to space. Let them risk their capital and lives for the benefit of mankind.

I firmly believe that is the only way we will get there.

LESSONS LEARNED: Sending stuff by priority mail

Friday, December 23, 2016
  • Since at crunch times, like Christmas, the mailers “disappear” no matter how hard the Postal Workers try to keep them stocked. So keep a few of those mailers in your car for when they are needed.
  • You can use the PO kiosk with a credit card. Sometimes these are available when the windows are closed.
  • After seeing some PO disasters, I have been putting my contents inside a zip lock bag with the addressing information where I hope it’s supposed to wind up.

  • The PO uses automatic scanning  the zip code. If you are going to put phone numbers in the address, which I’ve been told is a good idea, then you need to put it under the name, but before the address.

    For example:

        John Q. Public
        (212) 555-1212
        123 Anystreet Place
        Anywhere XX 01010-1234

  • When you get the receipt, confirm the tracking number asap. Then, alert the recipient with the link. Ask for them to confirm they received it. But you’ll still have to check. (I had to tell one person to look outside their front door!)
  • Check the “to” and “from”. (I’ve more that once reversed that. DUH!) Might also help to verify the addresses, I’ve sent stuff to the old address by accident and by my own stupidity.

  • It’s also useful to print the from/to info then put it on the Priority Address label covering it with clear tape. Then all you have to do is put the self-adhesive Priority Address label on the envelope or box. Works nicely.

Feel free to add your own observations.

VETERANS: Why can’t a vet start his own waiting list site?

The VA’s Secret Hospital Rankings
Thursday December 15th, 2016   •   Posted by Craig Eyermann at 7:28am PST

*** begin quote ***

The most disturbing part of the story, however, was a revelation about the VA hospitals most closely associated with its secret waitlist scandal. (Bear in mind that veterans seeking medical treatment at those facilities were placed on secret lists that hid how long they were waiting to receive treatment, while VA administrators and supervisors used the VA’s official waiting lists to claim bonuses for meeting the VA’s goals for providing speedy service.)

*** and ***

After more than two years of President Obama’s feckless and ineffective management of the veterans health care rationing scandal and his failure to see through needed reforms, the VA is in desperate need of real reform and a management turnaround, starting with major changes in the VA’s leadership throughout its bureaucracy.

*** end quote ***

It would seem easy for a vet to start a blog and their comrades can report their actual waiting times?

That would create a counter weight to falsified stats!
