TECH HARDWARE: next generation of USB flash drives: the U3 smart drive

Next generation of USB flash drives: the U3 smart drive

***Begin Quote***

Meet the next generation of USB flash drives: the U3 smart drive. It’s what’s inside that makes them smart.

* Carry and access your files easily
* Keep your data safe and secure
* Comes with pre-loaded software
* Hundreds of software titles available!

Storage+Software=Smart

Imagine carrying your software on the same flash drive that carries your files. That’s what you can do with a U3 smart drive. You can plug it into any PC and work, play a game, message friends, send email, edit photos and more. A U3 smart drive makes any PC your own PC. And when you unplug it, it leaves no personal data behind.

***End Quote***

Neat idea. No wonder the stores are dumping the old usb drives at fire sale prices. Before this paradigm shift gets out and they are stuck with the unsold and unsellable inventory.

Already inside the U3 paradigm there’s a Vista incompatibility. If you want to “Vista”, then you need version 1.4 or higher. And, yes, there’s no guarantee that you can move from your version to that version. And, you have to get it from your drive manufacturer.

Nice idea BUT doesn’t wow me.

(1) Locks you into the windows genre.

(2) Limited hardware competition (less than 10 vendors)

(3) Limited software selection. Applications developers need to do a rewrite.

No, not for me. Maybe you, but not me.

RANT: LinkedIn toolbar and LookOut

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

>Does anyone have a quick fix to help me completely remove this malware

I have had to (several times) use the Outlook repair function on the “notsoHELPful” menu tab.

Some caveats. Backup. You may want the old crud after you see the new crud you’re left with.

(1) Make sure you have your distribution media and serial number handy — you may muck things up worse if you don’t (I did);

(2) Nuke all the “extra” crud installed Options>Other>Advanced and nuke all in “add in”, “reminder”, and “com add in”.

(3) Uninstall everything Plaxo, LinkedIn, and any other Outlook add ins from ADD/REMOVE program entry;

(4) from the start>run>msconfig ensure that you don’t have anything automatically helping you that you don’t really understand.

Wish everything good bye. You did backup didn’t you?

(I had one acquaintance who blamed LookOut, and it was a disguised corrupt registry and, when the hard disk burped at the wrong time, his data went to data heaven welcomed by 72 disk drives that ever had an data! My acquaintance had NOT backed up in a while either. He changed jobs soon after that. Probably got promoted with more money.)

THEN run repair from OUTLOOK HELP.

Reboot cold TWICE. (Once is not necessarily enough!?!)

Then sacrifice a chicken, examine the entrails, and send the remains to Bill Gates or Vincent.

It’s ugly.

One thing I have found that repeated COLD REBOOTS (power down and wait 5 full excruciating minutes) allows WINDOZE and LOOKOUT to clear queues and caches and who knows what else allowing the stupid thing to run correctly).

Argh! I’m in pain just thinking about what you’re going thru.

Act 2007 Premium for Workgroups is reliant on SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. It turns out that the very installation of Act breaks all of our other SQL instances. That includes Sharepoint, Backup Exec and other critical apps. It’s a one-way upgrade too. So there is no ‘uninstall.’ The cure? Uninstall SBS2003 and reinstall. Oh, and yes, the files that Backup Exec has recorded — unusable.

XPfails – luggable – Recovery?

Sunday, April 15, 2007

Well, dodged a bullet today. (Maybe?)

The registry was reported corrupt and the pig won’t boot. Repair didn’t.

Argh!

I had tried the rescue disk that came with the platform from Dell. It didn’t do anything good for me.

So I dusted off one of my XP installation disks and ran “repair” using that. It threw the box up into checkdisk, which ran. Didn’t report any errors. May or may not have fixed anything. But it did then allow the box to boot into WXP. (Yeah!)

On the theory that this might be my last chance to visit with my data. I pulled out my WDDRIVE with WDSYNC on it and took a back up. (I usually do my weekly backups on Monday!)

Now, I fearlessly did a cold restart.

That worked but it wasn’t not connecting to the home lan. I tried using WXP, the Intel ProSet Wireless utility, and the VWBBIE (Verizon Wireless Broadband utility also manages the WiFi). Nothing worked.

Argh! Squared!

So I power cycled everything in sight. Ran the Intel Wireless debugger.

Couldn’t think of anything else to do, so on a hunch, I changed the WiFi SSID. Shouldn’t have made any difference. Changed the password as well. (Big deal. Any script kiddie can bust this “security”!)

Disabled PGP. Disabled ZoneAlarm.

Power cycle everything.

Argh! Tripled!

Verified that the BackRoom DELLDESK could connect thru the wifi router to the net. Verified that the OLDDELL notebook could get to the net via the wireless.

So it made me focus on the LUGGABLE as the problem.

Deleted all the Intel configurations. Went to the DELLDESK, changed the SSID and password again. Rebooted the router. Power cycled everything in sight again. And then readded the Intel configurations.

And, voila, the pig put on its roller skates and took off!

So, that wasted a Sunday. Sigh.

XPFAILS – LUGGABLE: Catastrophic error

vs: Still the same. Wanna try sacrificing some chickens next? ;-) Like I hadn’t tried that or seen at a different computer. Why does every PC support person insist on a cold reboot? BTW, since last night was my night to do “microsoft maintenance”, I was forced to do a cold restart. So, perhaps there’s some crud in a table somewhere on your side of the wire?

***End Quote***

If I have learned one thing in testing software (which I think is “fun”), it is don’t annoy users with obvious stuff that has no hope of solving the problem. Or, at least ask it, or propose it in a way that is “softer”. Remember I am unpaid help, or worse I’ve paid for this mistake. At least with “free software”, you haven’t paid to debug someone else’s code.

It’s like that nameless isp that always wants you to power cycle your setup when it’s obvious to the world that they have a dns problem.

About the only thing worse is having paid no support at all. Buying a product and getting no support like IBM, Nuance, Microsoft, and that ilk! (There’s special circle in hell for them.)

Sometimes it would be better to have no support than long phone queues, “dumb” people (Yeah, I know they are working from scripts!), or autobots that just fire back meaningless canned answers.

At least with the new web20s services, you can usually get to SOMEONE.

Argh!

The next round of email I included a screen shot where I MSPAINTed three big orange circles about the problem. (I’m getting pretty handy with that tactic!) That exchange ended with “we have a bug”! Yeah, DUH, you do! I think I said that. Double Argh.

I deliberately didn’t name the SERVICE since they are trying. Let’s give them some time to work before we award them a negative review. Fair is fair.

6.1 A Free Utility That Stops Programs From Hogging Your PC

It was driving me mad. My laptop would sporadically run at 100% CPU utilization and lock up. It defied all attempts at analysis as the PC was seized and I couldn’t do anything. Only a hard reboot was possible, but on rebooting the problem was gone.

Eventually I solved it with a superb little utility called Process Tamer, written by “Mouser” over at Donation Coder. Process Tamer is a monitor that watches the CPU utilization of all running processes. Once the usage of a single process gets above a certain level (by default 70%) Process Tamer reduces the usage by lowering the process priority.

It’s a simple idea and Process Tamer implements it immaculately. With Process Tamer installed, the next time the problem occurred on my laptop it didn’t totally lock up but rather just ran very slowly. This allowed me to do a quick diagnosis. The problem turned out to be simple but non-obvious. Two programs, Diskeeper and X1, had been accidentally scheduled to start at the same time and were getting into an embrace of death. It was unexpected, as these two normally peacefully co-exist. Simply re-scheduling the programs to start at different times solved the problem.

I couldn’t have solved the problem as easily without Process Tamer. However Process Tamer has much broader application than just this kind of problem.

It’s a great tool for preventing any one program from hogging your processor. Every user has experienced the situation where their PC has been slowed down to the point of being unusable, by a background program such as a desktop search program, that starts and takes all the resources. Process Tamer will stop that from ever happening again.

For the same reason it can also help speed up your Windows Startup. Make sure though, that you enable Process Tamer to start automatically with Windows. By default it does not, but it’s easily changed from within the program’s options.

Yet another use for Process Tamer is intra-server load balancing. It’s near ideal for this task.
If you actually want a program to able to use all available resources, such as a digital editing program, you can set the program to be excluded from Process Tamer’s watchful eye.

I was so impressed with Process Tamer that I’ve permanently installed it on my laptop. It takes only around 6MB of memory space and its own CPU usage is so low I could barely measure it.

Process Tamer is available for free from the Donation Coder site. They use a novel licensing system: you have to register to get a free license key which allows you to download any number of programs on the site. This key lasts six months after which you must return to the site to download another free license key. After a year you are given a permanent license. Alternatively, you can make a once-up donation of any size and get a permanent key straight away. It’s a clever and ethical way to encourage users to recognize the work done by freeware authors and I support it fully. I donated generously and I hope you do too.

At Jott, we’re simply trying to give you more access: to your ideas, to people, and more.

We do it using things you trust that are already in your life: an ordinary cell phone and your voice.

To Jott, just make a phone call.

The way we figure it, if Jott gives you time back, let’s you connect or get more done, we’ve done our job.

I heard about this. Tried it. And thought that it might be very useful to have sometime. While it probably will switch to some non-free mode, it might be “handy” to have in reserve. Especially if it is cheap.

From using real dictation to a steno and things like ViaVoice, I know one can dictate much faster than type. And, in some circumstances all you might have access to is a quick phone call. Given that the input is the basic voice phone call, it could be a real “saving shot at the buzzer” sometime.

I guess I’ll say I don’t understand. Sorry, maybe I’m being a little dense. (1) What do I want to “control” that I can’t do on the free blog at WordPress? (2) I’ve been doing the “free thing” for over a year now and have a substantial amount of content on the free WordPress blog site. If you convinced me to move to a paid WordPress account somewhere, what would be the benefits, challenges, and migration activities? Maybe I’m just being more than a little dense, but I have not seen anything “bad” at the free WordPress offering. And, I think I’m pretty critical. Thanks for the education, fjohn

Ferdinand,

I definitely don’t think WordPress.com is “bad.” In fact, for many bloggers, it’s a great option. It just wasn’t right for me, mostly because I didn’t have ultimate control over my blog. Here are some thoughts on limitations of a free blog:

With a free blog, you don’t actually own the domain or the blog. You’re just using someone else’s space. I like having the keys to my blog, and knowing that I can do anything I want; I’m not at someone else’s mercy.

Free blogs are inherently limited when it comes to customization. You’re usually stuck with a number of preset themes. WordPress has tons of plugins, but only certain widgets are allowed on WordPress.com.

You also can’t do some things on free platforms, due to the Terms of Service. One example is PayPerPost. We can debate the paid posting model, but the fact is that WordPress.com won’t allow you to do it. I like flexibility.

Migrating to your own custom WordPress installation shouldn’t be too hard. I did it last year. I copied each and every post from WordPress.com to my new installation. There’s probably a way to automate this, but I’m not sure. The biggest issue of migrating is that you’ll lose some referral and search traffic, if you’re not careful. You can put redirects on each old page, but this is time consuming. Once again, maybe there’s an automatic way for this to work.

Best of luck in whatever you decide,
Andrew

PS: I’m happy to help with a specific issue or question. I hope this answers some general questions.

Now, I know about the widget restriction. Javascript is basically verboten on the free site. And, I doubt I’d ever attract the readership to make any money out of this. So up to now, the idea of moving off the free site, never interested me. But, like bozos who use a hotmail email address for their jobsearch, maybe I am being “dense”. I started to look at WordPress’ preferred hosting vendors. One has some gripes about their availability and others are focused on webhosting with barely a mention of WordPress.

Have to think if that effort is worth the cost in dollars and attention.

One item of note: I found Legal Andrew as a result of a blog carnival hosted by Jason Alba of JibberJobber http://www.jibberjobber.com. So, one truly has to keep your eyes open and connect the dots to learn all the “tricks of the trade”. Blogging trade that is.

I was exchanging email with G. Lane Cavalier of “Connecting the World One Beverage at a Time” http://glcavalier.wordpress.com/ about my thoughts on this topic. I referred him to the blog and he came back and asked where I had blogged about it. Of course, being lost in the subject, I had forgotten to hang it out here. Duh. That’s for the reminder Lane. P.S.: Listening to my favorite podcast http://www.freetalklive.com I’ve been know to drive by my exit in the morning too.

Bottom line: I’m not sure that moving off the free WordPress is a good idea or easily done. Still thinking about that/

So We Say

***Begin Quote***

SoWeSay, a company created by two Yahoo alumni, launched the first symbiotic social networking site (www.sowesay.com) that allows users the freedom to create profiles, rate and review anyone they know or encounter online and offline. SoWeSay also gives users a powerful social networking tool “SayWhat?” to gain candid feedback from anyone. SoWeSay is the fun destination to find, share and learn about new individuals directly from the people who know them best.

Now using my amazing power of negative thinking, I would think this would be a good place to place the “LEAD WEIGHTS” in one’s life. I think their methodology is flawed unless one wants to be incredibly negative about someone. All a bozo will see is negativity.

Correct me if I am wrong?

I don’t think our brains are wired this way. IMHO it only works by pair-wise comparison. For example, even if we accept their dimensions of “Generosity, Intelligence, Likeability, Sense of Humor, and Trustworthiness” — I’d have my own as would you –, how can you rate “likeability” on a sliding scale. I can say that I like X more than Y, or I like X, or I dislike Y, but to slide the “likeability” bar. Nah, I’m no psysicy-ologist just an old injineer who can’t spell them bug wurds. My brain doesn’t work that way

And, to put someone on this site, you really have to know a lot about them.

So imho it’s a good page for the lead weights in your life.

Hi

I read your comment on the Linkedin power forum on ostracism which gave me a chuckle. I thought you might have been an Aussie ;-)

Your profile is entertaining. Are you finding that LinkedIn and Ryze are worthwhile?

G’day Mate, No, not an awesie, but I watched Crock-a-dile dundee a few times. Does that count? Glad you were amused. I think that inet’s “hidden nature” allows people to be butt heads and think there are no consequences. Putting bozos on the virtual iceberg and giving them a healthy shove out to the proverbial sea will send a quick chilling message. Glad to be entertaining. I had an injineering prof say “if you can’t get the answer right, at least be entertaining”.

OK, seriously now, I think the jury is still out on the whole social networking genre. I really don’t have time to master multiple sites in the niche. I chose LinkedIn over Ryze for my efforts because Ryze was overrun with MLMers and “kiddies”. I have yet to say “wow, that was because of LinkedIn that I made that $5”. OTOH I have connected with lots of people, earned a little following on my blog, and did publish a “vanity” of my blog in 2006. I’d say that was all driven from LinkedIn. I’m not sure that I say it was “worthwhile” yet. But, I haven’t written it off yet. It’s still a “work in progress”. The genre is still “silo-ed” imho. That is that tools don’t interoperate yet. If ever. I still have a lot of “hand operated” stuff. If I could logically add Act – Outlook – Plaxo – LinkedIn – Skype – Corex Cardscan – AOLIM – MySql – Gmail – Greader – Gpage all into one black box that synced flawlessly, then I’d say “worthwhile”.

Thanks for a great question that allowed me to summarize my thoughts. I’ll blog it when I get time.

So what do you think? Are they “worthwhile”?

[Note: An interesting idea. Instead of email, blog posts as a “conversation”. I have to get a patent and some VC money. And a slide deck … absolutely have to have slide deck! I can call it “eavesdropping”.]
