MYCELIA + SAWDUST = HOUSE?

Take a guess. What is the featured picture for this article? If you’re channeling your inner Google image recognition, you might say: “Best guess for this image: rock.” But, like Google, you’d be wrong. Instead, what you see are bricks made out of fungi obtained from tissues of mycelia.

By taking fungi obtained from tissues of mycelia and storing them in a jar filled with a growth medium (usually sawdust), MycoWorks is creating all sorts of materials with exciting properties. In just three to seven days, the fungi and sawdust mixture expands and forms into clumps of material, which are then used to create products like handbags, purses, bricks, you name it. According to co-founder Phil Ross, “production of this material is similar to making ravioli from scratch, and the final product is more resilient than concrete.”

Let’s talk crap. Seriously.
By Dan Dennett

*** begin quote ***

Sometimes mentioning the unmentionable is a major step forward. Rose George’s witty, fact-filled talk about the problems we can solve if only we start taking shit seriously is just such a step. Human excrement is not just a major source of disease; it also can be a source of remarkably effective medical treatments, and of energy. Putting poop where it can do good rather than harm is surprisingly easy and inexpensive once we clear away the myths and taboos.

It’s often said that water will be in the 21st century what oil was in the 20th century, and among the most effective ways of preserving and enlarging freshwater supplies worldwide are revolutions in how we dispose of our excrement. It’s mainly social attitudes that stand in the way of adoption of these practices and systems. So here’s a great opportunity for social activists to participate in the meme-spreading that could wipe out the shit-spreading that’s fouling the environment. Don’t preach, don’t teach; reach out, in the ways Rose suggests.

When I was a young fat old white guy injineer, there were a lot of jokes about “sanitary engineering”, but we learned how essential it is to human survival.

  • Depoliticize
  • Eliminate the psuedo patriotism
  • Lower the prices
  • Shorten the games
  • Start night games earlier (I have a bedtime)
  • Innovate the challenge system (Need them to get the calls right.)
  • Not every stoppage in play is not a time for 2 minutes of commericals
  • Prohibit “repetitious” commercials. (Same product or service ok; just need a different commercial for it. Repetition leads to “tune out”)
  • Less talking heads; more action.
  • Less pre-game and post-game
  • Fewer meaning less games
  • A “mercy rule” for the fans — down 40-3 in the last quarter; games over. (maybe first to 50 points)
  • Overtime needs to go until there’s a win. (Ties are like kissing your sister.)

A New Playbook
The NFL is searching for new ways to tighten its grip on the public’s attention. Ahead of Sunday’s championship matchup between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday plans to use his annual state-of-the-game press conference to stress that the league is serious about making changes amid steep ratings declines and other problems. The NFL has begun experimenting with shuffling the way ads appear in game broadcasts, and is considering making the weekly lineup of games easier to find on television as well as tweaking the pace of the sport itself. The move to shake things up comes after a season in which average viewership per game fell 8% overall and some teams played before ugly patches of empty seats in stadiums as sold tickets went unused.

from the Wall Street Journal

A Sorry Mess
Samsung is on an apology tour for the blunder that led to the costly and embarrassing recall of 2.5 million smartphones. After four months of testing more than 200,000 phones, Samsung concluded that its flagship Galaxy Note 7 caught fire because of bad batteries—two separate sets of bad batteries made by two different companies, in fact, a conclusion also reached by independent certification firm UL. Our technology columnists, Geoffrey A. Fowler and Joanna Stern, compare it to “a meteor striking your house—twice.” Samsung said it would implement new safety measures, including an eight-step battery-safety check, for future devices. Fowler and Stern give Samsung’s response thus far a C grade, stating that it is still unclear whether the new tests raise the bar on safety or merely match what other premium smartphone makers are doing.

INTERESTING: Am I being to “Law & Order” paranoid?

Wednesday, January 25, 2017

An interesting thing happened to me the other day when I was driving up to The Free State of New Hampshire https://freestateproject.org/ from the Pepuls Republik of Nu Jerzee!

I stopped for dinner at a local diner along the way. After parking, this driver starts choking the horn at me. WTH. So I walk over, and this old biddie is yelling “Directions. I need directions.” and starts to ask me local geography questions — what road is this, where is deerfield, is this route something or other. I thought I was on Jeopardy finally but she was no Alex Trebeck.

So, I said “OK. First calm down. Close your door. Lock it. And roll down the window.”

It took her at least two minutes to do that. I said: “OK, I’ll help you but never open your door around strangers. What is the problem?”

She was still agitated. But I got the story she was lost, she got off at the wrong exit, and didn’t know how to get home.

Wow, that’s easy.

I told her to wait in her car while I got my phone. Which I did. I had the WAZE app up like I always do for traffic and police alerts.

So, I asked her address. She gave it to me and it was about two miles away.

I showed her the map, and then I went over the turn by turn. She was still confused.

I could see that this was not going to end well if I just sent her off into the night. So I said, “OK, just follow me. I’ll lead you home.”

Got in my car, turned around, and led her home.

10 minutes away. (She obviously turned the wrong way off I91 and got confused.)

Led her to her house. Without getting out of my car — window to window — confirmed she knew where she lived. Waited while she pulled in and went into the house.

Went back to the diner and had some very dry “bad” meatloaf. And thought about the incident.

LESSONS LEARNED (Maybe I watch to much Law & Order)

  • She trusted fate. I could have been a “bad guy”.
  • I trusted fate. She could have been a “bad guy”. (Pretty random chance.)
  • There could have been Unintended Consequences of my good deed.

NEXT TIME

  • Alert one of my “shadows” that I am deviating from plan.
  • Photo and share her plate number.
  • Notify the police about what’s happening. Have them schedule a “welfare check”. I probably need to give them my plate number if I knew it.
  • Confirm with my “shadows” that I am back on plan.

Does that sound reasonable or am I being to “Law & Order” paranoid?

By all appearances, we’re in a golden age of innovation. Every month sees new advances in artificial intelligence, gene therapy, robotics and software apps. Research and development as a share of gross domestic product is near an all-time high. But none of this has translated into meaningful advances in Americans’ standard of living. Our “Innovation Paradox” series explores the forces at play, from increased regulatory hurdles to greater risk-aversion. We examine why Silicon Valley giants often stumble in the world beyond software and how Big Pharma has had to re-engineer how it finds treatments. IF “we” have become “risk adverse”, THEN I believe it’s due to Gooferment Skrules, the Gooferment, “Secular Progressives”, and the “Everyone gets a trophy” meme.

Why swing for the stars if your accused of hateful behavior? I read and hear stories of smart Americans, who happen to be black, and who achieve, are accused of “betraying their race”, “acting white”, or being an “oreo”. Nerds, other than on “The Big Bang Theory” #TBBT, are ridiculed.

On a personal note, as a Catholic school boy, the Good Nuns and Brothers always DEMANDED nothing less than our best. Sometimes with regrettable physical consequences. (I felt that was a way too much. Guess because I was “encouraged” to often for my tastes.

How Did Native Americans Keep Time Without A Watch (Or Calendar)?
Written by: Tammy Robinso

*** begin quote ***

In today’s modern world, it is easy to tell time. There are clocks on buildings, billboards, cell phones and microwave ovens. Then there’s the old-fashioned grandfather clock in the hallway.

But what if you didn’t have a watch? What would you do then?

And if you didn’t have a calendar, would you know when winter was coming? When it was the appropriate “time” to plant? To harvest? How old you are? How long would it take for you to “forget” to mark down a day or several days, or several weeks, thus obscuring even your age?

Native people had certain signs that they relied on and they actually had a very good sense of “time” — even though it differs from what we would consider time today.

White Man’s Time Clock

For many tribes, the clock – the one the Europeans used and brought to America — was a strange thing that was not easily understood. Some tribes thought that since the clock moved on its own and that it sometimes made sounds, it was a living thing.

*** end quote ***

It really is an insightful question. People work themselves to death by the clock.

Perhaps it’s better to ignore “time” and focus on “life”?

I often rant about Time Zones and Daylight Savings Time. Is this the meme that illustrates how crazy our species is?

Do we needlessly complicate “life” by our paradigms and memes on “time”?

Imagine the simplicity of a “universal time zone” like GMT. It just means that a nine to five job in New York would be a “Two to 10”. Each of the current time zones would just adjust their labels. And no more confusion as to what time is the there!

Laugh!

And DST is just stupid and kills people.

Not likely to change but it does give us an interesting insight.

I bet you the rent money that their parents — or any other parents they knew when they were growing up — would not have accepted the grossly disrespectful behavior seen today among many black youngsters, using foul language and racial epithets. Older blacks will tell you that had they behaved that way, they would have felt serious pain in their hind parts. I found this a compelling read.

One of the most quoted excerpts from Scottish poetry is derived from Canto VI, XVII: Oh, what a tangled web we weave. When first we practise to deceive! Felicia Hemans used two lines from Marmion as an epigraph for her poem of 1827, The Homes of England.

Wow, he really “stepped in it”, and the Post reporter dug his grave with the lies.

Reporter should get a Pullitzer.

As a computer security guru, I doubt the cellphone evidence. Chain of custody was non-existent. The NCIS should have seized all the evidence at time of investigation. It doesn’t say what Stadler’s specialty was but for a USNA graduate there had to be some computer courses there. Fabricating message might not be that hard.

But Thompson was less than 100% truthful so that makes it look bad for him.

What a mess.

INTERESTING: Fifty percent of what we just taught you were wrong

Salt Restriction Increases Heart Disease Deaths and Hospitalizations

Since graduating from medical school in 1989, I have come to the conclusion that much of what I was taught was wrong.  In fact, at my medical school graduation, the dean said, “Fifty percent of what we just taught you were wrong, your job is to figure out which part was correct and which was incorrect.” When medical students come to my office, I always encourage them to question everything I tell them and, furthermore, to question what they have been taught.

Wow, this does nothing to inspire confidence in “medicine”.

It wasn’t that way in injineering skrule!

And, add the Gooferment’s gigantic interference in the medical marketplace and my confidence drops even further.

So, I guess we do need IBM’s Watson to “help” doctors like the TV commercial says.

Argh!

INTERESTING: 2010 case resolved

UTAH
Eagle Scout finds state park gunman’s remains in Utah cave 5 years later
Published December 25, 2015  Associated Press

*** begin quote ***

Shumway, a 23-year-old Utah Valley University student, told The Associated Press than he and his 15-year-old brother had decided to spend two weeks over winter break searching for Arellano — a mission their police officer father helped with five years earlier. An outstanding $30,000 reward for Arellano was part of the draw, Shumway said.

“For a poor college student, that’s pretty appealing,” he said.

Shumway added that resolving the case was a big thing for the Moab community. “There’s lots of closure that would come with finding this guy because no one really knew if he was dead or alive,” he explained.

Shumway, an Eagle Scout who grew up exploring caves and canyons in the area, said he was confident he could find Arellano’s body after studying the case and discussing the search area with his father.

I find this interesting.

One, the original “manhunt” was obviously useless.

Two, imagine dying alone in the back of a dark cave?

Three, how much other “reward money” is just waiting to be found?

Four, it all started from a “no camping zone” violation. Argh!
