LIBERTY: Expecting the Gooferment judge to rule against Gooferment bureaucrats?

US judge dismisses challenge to border laptop searches

The searches are rare and don’t require reasonable suspicion, a federal judge said
by Stephen Lawson

U.S. Customs and Border Protection can search travelers’ laptops and other electronic devices without a show of reasonable suspicion, according to a federal judge’s dismissal of a 2010 lawsuit on Tuesday.

In its suit, the American Civil Liberties Union had argued that having border officials search the contents of a laptop violated the U.S Constitution unless the officials had a reasonable suspicion that the contents related to a crime. Judge Edward Korman of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, in Brooklyn, disagreed and threw out the suit. The ACLU said an appeal is being considered.

“We’re disappointed in today’s decision, which allows the government to conduct intrusive searches of Americans’ laptops and other electronics at the border without any suspicion that those devices contain evidence of wrongdoing,” ACLU attorney Catherine Crump said in a press release from the organization. Crump argued the case in 2011.

Sorry, but expecting the Gooferment judge to rule against Gooferment bureaucrats, is foolish.

It’s all about power and control!

How do you change this tyranny?

JOBSEARCH: Your career may end at 40!

50 Is the New 65: Older Americans Are Getting Booted from Their Jobs — and Denied New Opportunities
Age discrimination could be headed for you, sooner than you think.

*** begin quote ***

In every corner of America, millions of people are terrified of losing their jobs and falling into financial ruin. Men and women with impressive professional achievements and credentials are being let go, nudged out and pushed aside. They are pounding the pavement and scouring the job sites, but find themselves turned away even for the most basic retail jobs. Not because they aren’t competent. Not because they lack skills. But simply because they have a gray hair or two.

This is not just a story of people in their 60s or 70s. Workers as young as 50 are shocked to find themselves suddenly tossed onto the employment rubbish heap, just when they felt on top of their game. They’re feeling stressed, angry and betrayed by a society which has benefited greatly from their contributions.

As the global population grows older, age discrimination is on the rise. It could be headed for you, much sooner than you think.

*** end quote ***

“I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!” Captain Renault in Casablanca

Age-discrimination?

Stunning.

So what does society do about it?

Unfortunately, there is nothing to be “done”.

Folks have to:

* Realize that they must form their own businesses.

* Create “streams of earnings”. (Think 10 ½ day part time jobs!)

* Develop powerful personal networks. (Not just numbers people on Linkedin, Twitter, or Facebook!)

* Invest in themselves.

* Formulate their Plan B, Plan C, D, E, … Z.

* Refine their Unique Value Equations and the corresponding Unique Sales Propositions.

* And, about establish a ruthless financial discipline, that recognizes the expected delay in finding another paycheck, by increasing dramatically increasing “rainy day” savings. (Over 40, one must recognize that you may never find another job like the one you have at the money you are currently making.)

Now that last sentence is very scary.

You MUST know your BURN rate. You MUST become a MISER (Unless you never need to work again.) You MUST invest wisely and avoid stupid money mistakes.

And, most of all, you MUST have COURAGE!

Target Corp is crying foul on insiders who recently told the media that encrypted PINs were stolen along with more than 40 million credit and debit card numbers in the retail behemoth’s catastrophic data breach.

The hackers who attacked Target Corp and compromised more than 40 million credit cards and debit cards also managed to steal encrypted personal identification numbers, according to a senior payments executive familiar with the situation told Reuters.

The “card” companies are too cheap to put in a better level of security on the cards.

They could “chip” them or at least put photos on them.

The industry has many ways to tighten up the controls, but that translates into money.

As long as fraud stays low, they are happy to eat it.

Unless the cost equation changes, not much will happen.

You have to laff at the politicians and bureaucrats who are on TV pontificating.

They are the ones who created this mess.

Without Social Security Number, no of this nonsense would be possible.

So like Harry Browne said: “Government is good at one thing: It knows how to break your legs, hand you a crutch, and say, ‘See, if it weren’t for the government, you wouldn’t be able to walk.'”

Argh!

I’ve heard it argued that A&E is a private company and fully entitled to hire and fire as they wish. But this is not the case. A&E is not private property at all, but a corporation, a mere appendage of the government, and obliged thereby to respect the Constitutional niceties.

*** end quote ***

Now there is a take on it that I have not heard.

A corporation is an extension of the Gooferment!

Hence bound by the Constitution.

Interesting to think of the ramifications of that?

GUNS: Armed Response Halted School Rampage

Stopped in 80 Seconds: Armed Response, Not Gun Control, Halted School Rampage
Posted on December 20, 2013

*** begin quote ***

Last week’s tragic shooting at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, left one student in critical condition.  The perpetrator, a senior at the school, was reported to have randomly shot 17-year-old Claire Davis as she sat innocently in the hallway.  As bad as that was, things could have been much worse.

Information released this week indicates that the perpetrator was planning a much larger attack and was armed with a shotgun, about 125 rounds of ammunition, three Molotov cocktails and a machete.

According to a CNN story, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said of the shooter, “His intent was evil, and his evil intent was to harm multiple individuals.”

On his arm, the perpetrator had written in indelible ink five classroom numbers and a phrase in Latin that translates to “the die has been cast,” according to the sheriff’s office.

But as reported in the Washington Times, the attacker’s mission was stopped short by the quick response of an armed deputy sheriff who was working as a resource officer at the school.  Upon learning of the threat, the deputy ran from the cafeteria to the library, yelling for people to get down and identifying himself as a deputy sheriff.  The horrific incident lasted only a total of 80 seconds and ended with the shooter turning his gun on himself in the library as the deputy was closing in on him.

POLITICAL: Rush Holt touts Endangered Species Act

Friday, December 27, 2013

Dear Mr. Reinke,

Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of one of our nation’s strongest and most successful environmental laws: the Endangered Species Act. Passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and signed by President Richard Nixon, the Act was the first comprehensive law to address the global extinction crisis.

The Endangered Species Act took a zero-tolerance approach to achieving its goals: no new extinctions, no exceptions. As a result, 99 percent of listed species have been saved from extinction and are on the path to recovery. Some iconic American species, such as the bald eagle, the American alligator, and the Pacific gray whale, have recovered from the brink of extinction and are now thriving in their natural habitats. Beyond the preservation of individual species, the Endangered Species Act helps to keep the interdependent web of live strong.

Today, conservation efforts under the Endangered Species Act are a model for preserving biodiversity around the world. Unfortunately, some in Congress have suggested that weakening provisions of the Act would somehow yield greater benefits for the species it was designed to protect. As a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Endangered Species Act, I am committed to protecting our nation’s strongest and most successful environmental law.

Keeping America Safe, On and Off the Battlefield

Congress has taken another step in the ongoing and urgent effort to prevent suicide among members of our armed forces. A new defense bill that passed earlier this month included a provision I wrote to increase suicide prevention and outreach services for key segments of our Guard and Reserve.

These are specific pools of reservists who, when not assigned to active duty units, live and work among us in our communities in their civilian occupations. As such, they lack the ready access to mental health resources available to their active duty counterparts. My provision enables the Adjutant General of any state to request from the Pentagon address data for reservists in his or her state for the purpose of conducting suicide prevention and outreach activities.

The provision is an outgrowth of the Sergeant Coleman S. Bean Individual Ready Reserve Suicide Prevention Act, which I introduced in 2010 following the death by suicide of Sgt. Bean, an East Brunswick reservist about whom I have written previously.

The defense bill also included a provision I wrote to authorize a top-to-bottom review of programs in the Department of Defense to recruit and retain scientists, technology experts, mathematicians, and engineers. This amendment is a direct outgrowth of my work on the National Commission on Research and Development in the U.S. Intelligence Community, which published our final report this summer. It is imperative that American find, train, and retain world-class talent in these fields. The security of our nation quite literally depends on it.

Working For You

Recently, I was contacted by a Plainsboro veteran who is working hard to put himself through graduate school. Due to his past military service, he is eligible to receive federal tuition support – but although he had submitted a claim to the VA months earlier, his school still hadn’t received any payment. I reached out to the VA to resolve the problem, and the tuition payment was quickly made.

Have you encountered a similar problem with the VA, Social Security, Medicare, a passport center, or any other federal agency? If so, please call me at 1-87-RUSH-HOLT or by sending an e-mail. I’ll do all I can to address your problem.

Sincerely,

Rush Holt
Member of Congress

P.S. Just a reminder: I always want to hear from you, but to ensure a prompt response, please don’t reply to this e-mail. Instead, please visit holt.house.gov/contact or call 1-87-RUSH-HOLT (1-877-874-4658).

Sorry but how about the dead eagles at the California wind turbines?

Guess that “The Dear Leader” can do whatever he wants.

And I wonder if the Northwest Loggers who lost their jobs to save the spotted tree owl, which is being wiped out by other owls, would agree.

Snail darter, etc. etc.

Sorry, but the Gooferment doesn’t do anything — morally, effectively, or efficiently!

And, just because it was “bipartisan” doesn’t mean anything other than everyone got paid off!

And, no mention of Obamacare?
