A Not-So-Modest Proposal, by L. Neil Smith

Basically, it will be a felony for any Congressional candidate (for example) to accept campaign contributions money from outside his or her Congressional district. Similarly Senatorial candidates may not accept money from outside their state. And, possibly most important, Presidential candidates may not accept money from outside the United States.

Report: Food Freedom Flourishes in Three States with Government Regulators Out of the Way | | Tenth Amendment Center

Sunday, June 30, 2019

Food freedom flourishes in states where government regulators simply get out of the way. The proof is in the pudding – the and cakes and the bread and the raw milk.

According to a recent Forbes article, hundreds of local business have sprouted up across three states that have passed food freedom laws in recent years without a single report of foodborne illness.

Food freedom laws exempt small food producing businesses from onerous regulations and licensing requirements. These businesses can sell directly to the consumer from a home, farm or ranch, as well as at farmers’ markets and roadside stands.

Wyoming enacted the first such law in 2015. The expansive law even allows poultry farmers with fewer than 1,000 birds to sell chicken and turkey, along with products made from their birds. It also authorizes the sale of raw milk, rabbit meat and most farm-raised fish.

How a Native American reservation got ensnared in border crisis

Saturday, June 29, 2019

When President Trump proposed a barrier along the southern border with Mexico, a Tohono O’odham elder famously declared that the tribe did not understand the concept, having no word for “wall” in their native language.

Sorry, I feel bad what happened to your people, but you lost. Yes the “great white father lied”; but he’s lied to us “white folk” too. Reference social security . Unfortunately “might makes right”.

“Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedoms”
― Robert A. Heinlein, Starship Troopers

The issue us settled. Sad as it is, it’s over.

Teen leaps out Chick-fil-A drive-thru window to save boy who is choking on a seat belt inside a car | Daily Mail Online

Despite his nonchalance immediately after the fact, Simmons admitted that ‘I do feel like a hero’ and said he’s ‘still kind of shocked right now myself that all this has happened.’

Chick-fil-A stories always disprove the narrative that these are hate-filled people.

The Nonprofit Hospital That Makes Millions, Owns a Collection Agency and Relentlessly Sues the Poor — ProPublica

Saturday, June 29, 2019

Nonprofit hospitals pay virtually no local, state or federal income tax. In return, they provide community benefits, including charity care to low-income patients. In Memphis, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare has brought 8,300 lawsuits for unpaid medical bills in just five years.

There should be no such thing as a “non-profit”.  Profits are the “traffic signals” of the “invisible hand” of a truly free market.

NO MARGIN = NO MISSION.

RANT: The “Delphic Oracle” problem — Predict but can’t change

Friday, June 28, 2019

2019-Jun-28

Anyone else find that they can “predict” the future, but are powerless to change it.

I call it the “Delphic Oracle” problem.

*** begin quote ***

The Delphic Oracle was the most influential religious site in the ancient Greek world.  Speaking from a tripod in a crypt under the temple of Apollo at Delphi, the priestess called the Pythia acted as a medium for the god, and spoke the divine prophecies while in a state of trance or possession.

*** end quote ***

When people ask the Oracle a question, they got a cryptic answer and the heard what the wanted.

Sometimes when people pose a “problem” to me, I give them my best answer. And then they go off and do what they want.

Often, I can foresee the consequences of choices — no great skill to “foresee” a disaster from an “obviously” bad choice — but it’s frustrating that you can’t prevent the disaster.

Argh!

Maybe the solution is to just stop “advising” or “predicting” and  just say “no opinion” or some other weasel words or platitudes.

Argh!

“Hmmm, that’s an interesting question, or situation, what do you think is the best course of action?”
