I believe “Heroes” is a word reserved for those who do something “heroic”.
- Run into a burning building to save a stranger’s little child.
- Stand up for a minority at risk of your own safety like that black man protecting the innocent trucker during the Rodney King riots.
- Or the whistle blower who stands up for what’s right at risk of their personal career and paycheck.
While some folks are “exemplars” of the behavior that we all want to exhibit, I rarely believe the word “heroes” is warranted.
And, I’d be very embarrassed if it ever was applied to me and I didn’t “earn it”.
Just my humble opinion for what it is worth.
I think there are many folks out there who are positive and negative examples.
But “heroes” are few and far between.
At the end of the day, “Doing” and “Accomplishing” is more important than “Acting” and inflated “Labels”.
And there is such a thing as “Stolen Valor”.
My next rants should be about “public servants” and “first responders” as misused terms.
