Sergeant Nicholas Ranstad was twenty minutes into a nap when his spotter woke him up.

Four Taliban fighters were 1.28 miles away from the hut where the Army specialist sniper was living in Kunar Province in northeastern Afghanistan.

If the insurgents had looked more carefully, they would have seen white marks on boulders beside them. Randstad, a 28-year-old Florida native, had been using them for target practice for weeks.

*** and ***

But what happened to Ranstad in the years that followed has become all too common among veterans from the War on Terror.

That story is one the Pentagon doesn’t want you to hear.

Eleven years after killing the Taliban fighter with a once-in-a-lifetime shot, he walked into the home of a friend, Marine veteran Sean Miller.

Like Ranstad, Miller was a fellow veteran who struggled with PTSD.

He had shot himself in the head.

Ranstad called 911 to report a suicide, but ended up being arrested and taken into custody because of the flurry of emotion he felt in the seconds that followed.

When he saw his friend’s body he was so upset he fired four rounds into the floor of the house.

He then ripped down the Marine flag outside Sean’s home and draped it over his body.

The responding officers read him his Miranda rights and he ended up in jail for several days before being released on a $10,000 bond.

He was charged with reckless use of a firearm and firing it inside a dwelling, and it took 13 months to clear his name.

Ranstad admits his reaction in that moment of rage wasn’t right, but the situation showed signs of a crisis that runs far deeper.

Now 45 years old, married for 18 years and with a child, he has been out of the military for six years.

He was honorably discharged because of his own battle with PTSD and the ongoing effects of a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Thousands of veterans suffer from TBIs during their service, but trying to get an official diagnosis for them is a struggle.

It means veterans cannot get full benefits – even if they suffer symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, confusion, frayed memory, bad balance, racing hearts, paranoia, depression and random eruptions of rage or tears.

Ranstad’s story and his interactions with Sean before his tragic death are a painful reminder of the shortfalls of veteran care across the United States.

Maybe the young boys and girls, who don’t make it home, are the “lucky ones”.

Instead of help, they get politicians and bureaucrats and “stolen valor”.

Sorry, but vets should be standing tall for their fellow vets and not tolerate this abuse.

VETERANS: Gastonia, NC mistreat a homeless vet and his dog is killed; for NOTHING?

Veteran Attacked, His Service Dog Tasered After Angry Woman Wrongly Accused Him of Panhandling
Matt Agorist October 20, 2021

*** begin quote ***

Gastonia, NC — Joshua Rohrer is an honorably discharged Army veteran who, like tens of thousands of other veterans, is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after serving in Afghanistan. As a result of his illness, Rohrer hasn’t been able to hold down a job and is homeless. As panhandling is illegal in the city, Rohrer simply sits on the street and waves to folks as they walk by — which ended last week in a violent encounter with police.

Huffman explained that after she was tasered, Sunshine took off running and hid in a nearby store.

“[Rohrer] said, ‘My dog! My dog!’” Huffman said. “They took him to the back of the police car and slammed him on the pavement.”

That’s when Conley began filming as more officers arrived on the scene.

“It was really traumatizing,” Conley said. “I’ve never seen anything like that.”

When Rohrer bonded out, he told local media that he wasn’t begging for money, despite what the caller said. He was simply sitting there, which is not illegal at all.

“They proceeded to attack me and rough me up and use excessive force what I would consider police brutality,” he said. “I wish that they would have been calm and listen to what I had to say instead of attacking me.”

According to Rohrer’s family, after finding out his dog had been killed, he is not doing well.

SO I RESPONDED:

Properly used, I’d be as big a flag waver as the next guy. BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), since at least WW2, the politicians have USED the military as a prop. We’re getting a lot of good girls and boys killed and maimed so that “We, The Sheeple” can feel good and sing patriotic songs and pat themselves on the back. I watched the video and looked at the faces. How many of them are dead, wounded, or destroyed by PTSD now? Vets have to tin cup on TV for Wounded Warrior to try and put the pieces back together.

Argh!

I guess I’ve finally grow up and like Dorthy keep looking behind the curtain. I keep seeing a crass manipulation of the booboisie.
Maybe I’m over reacting, but there’s now a big push to go to war with Iran. Ron Paul is painted as a crazy old coot because of his anti-war, anti-military adventurism, anti-foreign agression. And, we have chicken hawks running for office and pontificating on the boob tube advocating for war, who have never served a day in their lives. And whose children will never serve a day in their lives.
This video really put a knot in my shorts. I was at the AmLeg last night chatting with an 81 year old Korean War vet, and with both agreed that the politicians should be on the front line for this nonsense. And, they want women to have equal rights to come home in body bags.

We may not have the draft to scare kids, and the wars may look like video games, but they are just as deadly. And, like I say to old people about nursing homes, dying may not be the worst fate that can come about.

Argh!

I feel I’m a patriot because I support the troops. I want them all home today. OK that’s not practical, tomorrow. Spike the guns and, as Ron Paul says, “catch the first thing smoking heading this way”. Or something like that.

Argh! squared!!
