Judge Tells Marine to Choose Between 2A Rights And Fostering Grandson
Posted at 9:51 am on July 19, 2017 by Beth Baumann

*** begin quote ***

The Johnsons were going to take custody of their grandson to keep him from going into foster care. When they went to pick up their grandson, William, a retired, disabled Marine with a Concealed Pistol License (CPL), was searched for a firearm. He was not carrying a firearm at the time. At that point, agency officials told the Johnsons that they would be required to provide all firearms’ serial numbers to the agency as part of a registry. When Johnson questioned agency workers, he was given a surprising response.

“If you want to care for your grandson you will have to give up some of your constitutional rights,” a MDHHS worker retorted.

When the Johnsons appeared before a Gogebic County Court judge, the judge reiterated the agency worker’s statement.

“We know we are violating numerous constitutional rights here, but if you do not comply, we will remove the boy from your home,” the judge said.

I would hope that every Michigan patriot will demand that this judge be immediately impeached.

This is unconscionable.

FUN: Stick pens — love them or leave them?

THE BIC STOPS HERE: IN PRAISE OF THE HUMBLE STICK PEN

*** begin quote ***

Since then, very little about the pen has changed—not even the faded blue plastic casing. “When people see this pen, they know exactly what it is,” says Brad Dowdy of The Pen Addict. “That Paper Mate keeps making it is a testament to it being a good enough pen.” Good enough, it turns out, to sell 90 million of these pens last year. Most of them are bought in bulk by schools and businesses who think they’re getting something cheap and semi-reliable. What they don’t realize is that they’re actually getting a classic pen, for the price of a few pennies.

*** end quote ***

I like the line: “I love my stick pens, but I don’t exactly value them.”

TDBANK gives pens away so freely that I see them at competing banks. Something humorous about that!

If a competing bank uses TD pens, I wonder how good a bank they are. In the case of Wells Fargo, there is no doubt.

Guess where I bank?

POLITICAL: Was the DJT JR meeting illegal?

625: Trump in Trouble. A smoking gun has appeared.

*** begin quote ***

Naturally, he’s going to come out clean. That’s what presidents do. But it proves the claims that some Trump campaign officials DID seek to sway the election with the help of the Russians.

*** end quote ***

More interestingly, Jason asks the question, that no one in the media is answering, “Was this illegal?”. If so, what law was broken?

Just as you don’t want to see sausage being made, “politics” is a dirty business. If the media was doing its “job” (i.e., muckraking), then the American People would be a lot better informed.

The Golden Triangle: Faster, Cheaper, and Better

In general, terrestrial short haul may be as fast or slightly slower than airlines, today. Nevertheless, it’s likely to be much more consistent on both price and time to the destination.

It’s hard to believe that the experience wouldn’t be more comfortable door to door and it will, likely, be much more affordable, especially for business group travel.

*** and ***

According to some estimates, the price of cabs sans driver could come down as much as three-quarters. If the journey between LA and SF with one passenger may be twice the cost of the best price and with more passengers, autonomous travel would become the cheaper option.

Interesting is the cost savings. ¾ price advantage, no security, and a comfortable ride — sounds like the poor man’s “private jet”.

GOLD: Why should gold be money? No bureaucrats required!

Sunday, July 16, 2017

2017-Jul-16

From (the brilliant) Alasdair Macleod: “Understanding Money and Prices”

“Gold matters, because, excepting silver, it is the only form of money that has survived since individuals discovered the convenience of money over barter. It is beyond the control of governments, as they cannot issue it without acquiring it first. It is subject to the constraints of its quality, so that as a medium of credit it cannot be debauched, only defaulted upon. Its relative inflexibility and its soundness are the primary reason governments do not like monetary gold, and force their preferred alternative on their citizenry. The vested interest of government is therefore to discourage, or even ban the use of gold as competing money.”

# – # – # – # – #

Imagine the world without any “central banks”?

Imagine the world without bureaucrats “setting” interest rates?

Imagine the world without politicians borrowing “money” to spend to buy votes?

Sounds like a pretty good world to me.

You could save for your retirement and know that Gooferment “inflation” couldn’t steal your wealth from you.

If a politician wants to start a war, then they have to pay for it.

If a bureaucrat wants to increase his staff, then they have to pay for it.

If the “community organizer” wants to get “free” stuff, then they have to pay for it.

Go ahead “raise taxes” and see how that worshippers out for you.

LOCAL: SBTWP bills for school

Franklin Dad Must Pay $35K For Sending Kids To South Brunswick SchoolsThe South Brunswick school system actually did surveillance, observing his Monmouth Junction rental property 27 times and finding it vacant.
By Carly Baldwin (Patch Staff) – Updated July 11, 2017 8:45 pm ET

*** begin quote ***

It was actually South Brunswick school system that launched the investigation. The district conducted surveillance at his Monmouth Junction rental. For 27 visits, there was no activity at the apartment, the district said. But on 28 occasions, the investigator saw the man’s cars parked outside his Franklin home. Those same cars would then drop his kids off at school the next day.

*** end quote ***

So why is the Gooferment in the “school business”?

We don’t care where the man buys his food or his gas. Why should it matter where his children get their education?

In 1984, I proposed to Hands Across New Jersey a forty year plan to privatize the school system. The first twenty were about giving parents free choice with vouchers; the second twenty were about reducing the amount of the vouchers by 5% every year.

If anyone was really interest in SOLVING the problem then, it’d been SOLVED three years ago. Argh!

If anyone was really interest in SOLVING the problem NOW, they could have it done by 2057.

It took the USA about 100 years to get into this mess and “ride” it to its breaking point.

The Hornet’s Nest (2014)

The Hornet’s Nest is a groundbreaking and immersive feature film, using unprecedented real footage to tell the story of an elite group of U. S. troops sent on a dangerous mission deep inside one of Afghanistan’s most hostile valleys. What was planned as a single day strike turned into nine intense days of combat against an invisible, hostile enemy in terrain where troops had never dared go before.

Starring: Mike Boettcher, Carlos Boettcher

Let’s bring all the girls, boys, women, and men home now! We have so many politicians and bureaucrats to send in their place if it’s really needed!

INTERESTING: The = sign

SCIENCE HISTORY —
How the equals sign changed the world
500 years ago, tragic Welsh genius Robert Recorde wanted to teach math to ordinary people.
ESTHER INGLIS-ARKELL – 7/9/2017, 9:00 AM

*** begin quote ***

Recorde found it irritating to have to state over and over that one side of an equation was equal to the other side. He wrote, with obvious annoyance and whimsical spelling, “And to avoide the tedious repetition of these woordes, is equalle to, I will sette as I doe often in woorke use, a paire of paralleles.” Instead of using a phrase to convey meaning, he would convey the same meaning with a symbol. What symbol could be more appropriate than a pair of equal-length lines? Nothing, Recorde explained, “noe 2 thyngs, can be moare equalle.”

Recorde’s symbol didn’t catch on at first. The language of Latin still held sway during the 16th century. Latin had a word for the concept, “aequalis,” and if more concision was necessary, people could shorten it to “ae” or “oe.” But aiding the popularity of the equals sign was Recorde’s introduction, to English-speakers, of the German symbols “+” and “-“. In combination, these signs allowed people to express, quickly and with a minimum of wasted ink, a mathematical equation in symbols. Instead of writing, “A factore added to a quantitie of thryeye is equalle to a dyffyrynte factore frome whyche is takene awaye a quantitie of foure,” a mathematician could write: “x + 3 = y – 4”.

*** and ***

Sadly, Recorde wasn’t lauded as a hero of rationality and math education in his lifetime. Brilliant as he was, he forgot one of the basic rules of his day: the aristocracy always wins.

*** end quote ***

I particularly like the observation that he brought “quantification” to the general population.

Sad that he wound up being “unequal”.

Argh!

Imagine if the human race cherished genius instead of celebrity, status, or “royalty”.

LIBERTARIAN: Elections suck

Commentary on US Election Security
Bruce Schneier

*** begin quote ***

Good commentaries from Ed Felten and Matt Blaze.

Both make a point that I have also been saying: hacks can undermine the legitimacy of an election, even if there is no actual voter or vote manipulation.

*** end quote ***

I’ve always been of the opinion that “we” have too many elections and elected offices.

It would seem the logic of Dead Old White Guys was to keep elections as local as possible (i.e., the House of Representatives; the Senate selected but the State Legislatures).

My suggestion is that each residence (i.e., house or apartment) would get one “vote” per person. Then, each street or apartment house would vote for their representative. That rep would vote for a neighborhood rep casting the number of proxies they hold. And so forth and so on, until we eventually got mayors. Mayors would vote for county execs. County execs for governor. All based on those underlying proxies. The Fifty governors would then elect a President.

Fraud would be virtually impossible. Yes it’d take some effort , but look at the results.

Mad at any politician? Take it up with the “elected rep” closest to you. Real easy!

Totally responsive to the electorate.

Go ahead and try and  hack that!

INTERESTING: I got pulled over?

Tuesday, July 11, 2017

2017-Jul-11 1055

Interesting morning.

I was driving the Caddie and pulled out of 7-11 when there was big gap in the traffic. Someone jumped into my gap and I was forced to stay on the shoulder for three or four cars. Finally a cop let me in. I waved thanks and toodled along.

Two lights later, he lit me up and pulled me over. Argh!

So I sat quietly until he walked up to the car. On his way to the driver’s side window, he touched the driver’s side rear light. That struck me as strange.

“Registration and insurance card”. I responded: “It’s in the glove box.” “Ok, you can get it now and thanks for telling me.” I got them out and the contents of the box rolled out. I took them out of the evelope and passed them to him.

“License.” “In my wallet”. “OK”. So extracted the wallet and pulled it out and handed it to him.

He said: “I pulled you over because your license came back as suspended. Did you turn your NJ license when you got a NH one?” “yes. The car is based in NJ so it’s registered and insursed here.” “OK.”

He went back to the police car. And spent a few minutes. On the way back, he touched the taillight again. Struck me as strange.

“Do you still have the address in Kendall Park?” “Yes.” “OK. No problem.”

And I went on my way.

I’m still wondering why he touched the car?

HEALTHCARE: Did Obamacare Really Save Lives? NO!

Did Obamacare Really Save Lives?
By Robert P. Murphy
Mises.org
July 1, 2017

*** begin quote ***

Conclusion

Although I personally do not yet have a theory on the specific mechanism that may be responsible, I am confident in saying that the actual data do not support the breathless claims that rolling back ObamaCare will literally kill many thousands of Americans. Fans of the Austrian school should not be shocked, though, to discover that having the federal government get more heavily involved in the health sector has apparently made things worse.

*** end quote ***

I put this in the class of “District of Corruption speak” — like Brave New World’s Newspeak. You know where: “draconian cuts” don’t reduce the baseline spending, “The Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick”, and “Does that mean that someone’s 13-year old daughter could walk into a sex clinic, have a pregnancy test done, be taken away to the local Planned Parenthood abortion clinic, have their abortion, be back, and go home on the school bus that night? Mom and dad are never the wiser.”

So overtime any of the politicians and bureaucrats — or their flunkies in the media — make ANY claim, I dismiss it out of hand. If they were to claim “the sun will come up tomorrow”, I’d wait and confirm it.

That goes for their predictions on everything.

When listening to “pitches”, ask who’s getting paid off and what’s the pitcher’s track record.

Why believe any to them?

Mystery of Bermuda Triangle deepens as ‘dangerous’ mile-long island suddenly forms in middle of Atlantic Ocean
Experts have warned visitors to stay away as the rip tide is ‘incredibly strong’ and the waters are infested with 5ft long sharks

A mystery island that has been branded ‘dangerous’ has suddenly formed in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle.

The crescent-shaped mile-long island off the tip of Cape Point in Buxton, North Carolina, began rising from the sea in Spring.

Surrounding the waters of the so-called Devil’s Triangle, the sandbank has been dubbed Shelly Island by locals because of the vast quantities of shells which litter the shore, Virginian Pilot reported .

The new island measures around one-mile long and more than 400 feet wide.

Not sure what the definition of an “island” is, but this is “something”.

The “triangle” is an interesting phenomenon that we don’t seem to understand?

VOCABULARY: Fiancé vs. Fiancée?

Fiancé vs. Fiancée
June 24, 2015 by: Dictionary.com

Much debate and change surrounds the terms fiancé and fiancée in the recent past. English speakers borrowed these gendered terms from the French in the mid-19th century, importing both the masculine (fiancé) and feminine (fiancée). This term ultimately derives from Latin, fidare literally meaning “to trust,” combined with the suffix -ance, which is used to form nouns from existing verbs.

I became aware of this “controversy” when I tried to put “fiancée” in the “accented words” folder of my TextExpander utility. It wouldn’t even let me make my own. Hence I investigate this “error”.

So I am a “fiancé” and AMH is my “fiancée”.

Laugh!

VOCABULARY: “doublethink”

Friday, July 7, 2017

Dictionary.com Word of the Day  JUNE 25, 2017

doublethink [duhb-uh l-thingk] 1. the acceptance of two contradictory ideas or beliefs at the same time.

QUOTES

Doublethink lies at the very heart of Ingsoc, since the essential act of the Party is to use conscious deception while retaining the firmness of purpose that goes with complete honesty. To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies …

— George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-four, 1949

ORIGIN

Doublesthink comes from George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-four (also 1984), published in 1949. It appears alongside Orwell’s other neologisms thoughtcrime and duckspeak. Doublethink, has a more sinister meaning than the relatively innocuous doubletalk, which appeared in the late 1930s and referred at first to the kind of speech that Casey Stengel (1891–1975) was famous for, and later to jargon or pompous language. Doublethink entered English in the second half of the 20th century.

Hard to imagine that this is possible but we see it today in both “politics” and the “media”.

Current example is the D’s complaining to the TV about the R’s “secret healthcare plan”, while “conveniently forgetting” that they did the same thing to pass Obamacare!

RANT: The road to hell — entitlements!

Thursday, July 6, 2017

FROM THE WSJ

*** begin quote ***

John P. Donchess of Ohio weighed in: “The Senate health-care bill will pass, be reconciled with the House bill and be signed into law by President Trump. Anything less is political suicide for the Republicans. This entitlement is here to stay, despite what conservatives (including myself) would prefer. This bill advances the ball in the right direction and allows for further improvements to be made in the future.”

*** end quote ***

Once an “entitlement” is “given”, it’s HARD to claw it back.

“Conservatives” should have fought harder to prevent it in the first place. Medicare, Medicaid, and “welfare” are classic examples.

The road to hell is paved with entitlements!

The USA is broke; its bankruptcy will be the ultimate “claw back”.

LIBERTy: Independence Day + local self-government, secession, and strict construction

Tuesday, July 4, 2017

2017-Jul-04

FROM TOM WOODS’ EMAIL

https://www.libertyclassroom.com/

*** begin quote ***

Independence Day is coming up, and I wonder how many people really get why it matters.

In school, we were told this: “No taxation without representation.”

Zzzzzzzz.

The real principles were more like the following.

(1) No legislation without representation.
The colonists insisted that they could be governed only by the colonial legislatures. This is the principle of self-government.

This is why a Supreme Court ordering localities around is anti-American in the truest sense. It operates according to the opposite principle from the one the American colonists stood for.

(2) Contrary to the modern Western view of the state that it must be considered one and indivisible, the colonists believed that a smaller unit may withdraw from a larger one.

(3) The colonists’ view of the (unwritten) British constitution was that Parliament could legislate only in those areas that had traditionally been within the purview of the British government. Customary practice was the test of constitutionality. The Parliament’s view, on the other hand, was in effect that the will and act of Parliament sufficed to make its measures constitutional.

So the colonists insisted on strict construction, if you will, while the British held to more of a “living, breathing” view of the Constitution. Sound familiar?

So let’s recap: local self-government, secession, and strict construction. Not exactly the themes you learned in school.

VOCABULARY: “Stray Dog Attacks”

Monday, July 3, 2017

FROM THE WSJ

*** begin quote ***

The Lone Wolf and the Stray Dog

Two botched attacks in Europe in recent days signal that Islamist terror has entered a new phase, security officials say, one that is more disorganized and less sophisticated but risks spawning more attackers determined to kill using any means at their disposal. Because of a lack of direct training and know-how, many of this new breed of assailant fail. Still, the absence of a connection to terror networks makes it difficult for intelligence services to track these individuals, and their often unsophisticated weapons—such as knives or cars—are easy to obtain. So authorities fear the attacks will increase. “We may be entering an era not of lone wolf, but stray dog attacks,” said one Western security official. The changing nature of the attacks also reflects improved security in Europe, but officials warn it would be reckless to underestimate the continuing threat of extremist groups.

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: Why not make it a “standard treatment”?

Does Intravenous Vitamin C Help Terminal Cancer Patients?
By: Dr. Michael GregerJune 23, 2017

*** begin quote ***

Critics understandably attacked the study for using after-the-fact controls. One can see how this could introduce bias. If researchers consciously or unconsciously chose control group patients who were sicker than the treatment group patients, the control group patients would die sooner than the treatment group patients, but it would have nothing to do with the treatment; the control group folks may have just started out in a worse place. Indeed, there is evidence that is what happened: A full 20 percent of the control group died within a few days after being declared terminal compared to none in the treatment group, which really does seem fishy.

Nevertheless, the trial was successful in finally convincing the National Cancer Institute to fund randomized controlled trials—performed by the prestigious Mayo Clinic, no less. What did they find? Stay tuned.

*** end quote ***

Why can’t this just be immediately administered? Vitamin C has to be cheap. (Maybe that’s why there’s no impetus to use. No big profits to be made.)

If me or mine has cancer, I’d insist on this treatment.

How bad could it be?

ECONOMICS: Lessons Leaned from Kansas

ECONOMICS
The Kansas Supply-Side Experiment Unravels
Tax cuts were supposed to spur growth, boost revenue and create jobs. The results were the exact opposite.
By Barry Ritholtz
June 19, 2017, 11:19 AM EDT

*** begin quote ***

When a governor announces an economic theory as a solution to a state’s fiscal problems, while challenging all comers to observe the results, that’s something I want to pay attention to. And so for the past five years, I have been watching the public-policy experiment in Kansas with great fascination.

With the state legislature now rejecting the governor’s experiment, we can move onto to the next phase: Not recrimination and blame, though there is lots of that going around. Instead, I want to look at how the experiment played out, and what lessons there are to be learned from it.

*** and ***

By just about every measure, Kansas’ economic laboratory experiment is now over, and the results are in. Supply-side tax cuts as executed in Kansas don’t generate more economic growth or create more jobs. They reduce tax revenue and forced the government to cut spending on essential goods and services like roads and schools.

*** end quote ***

I don’t think Ritholtz’s analysis goes quite far enough.

He doesn’t consider that “time” in his lessons learned.

It takes more than a generation to get folks to change. So a quick tax slashing with a large deficit spend is not how to spur the growth promised in the Laffer curve. It takes time to adapt.

Hence, the tax rate needs to be gently reduced over time with cutting waste and abuse. Then, strategic complete cuts to programs that are ineffective, and inefficient. With those savings either “banked for a rainy day” or returned to the taxpayer.

A one trick pony shot is not going to “fix” the decades of “training” that “We, The Sheeple” have in what Gooferment will do for them.

Rigorous fiscal discipline, while not showy, will bring prosperity.

IMHO this is needed at all layers of Gooferment.

Sad to say, but at one time, it could be found in both parties. Not any more in either.

Argh!

WSJ: Need to cut Mammoths down to size

Trump Team Proposes Broad Rethink of Financial Rulebook

The Trump administration proposed a wide-ranging rethink of the rules governing the U.S. financial sector in a report that makes scores of recommendations that have been on the banking industry’s wish list for years.

The report, described in a summary provided by the Treasury Department on Monday, gives the most detailed roadmap yet for President Donald Trump’s promise to revisit a wave of regulations put in place after the last financial crisis, affecting activities from mortgage lending to Wall Street trading.

If Mr. Trump’s regulatory appointees eventually implement them, the recommendations would neuter or pare back restrictions from the Obama administration, which argued the rules were necessary to guard against excessive risk taking and a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis.

Personally I’d like to see a rule that limits a “corporation” to a maximum size. THe only way I can think of it is that balance sheets should be limited to some number of digits. Maybe $999,999,999?

Over that size and it has to divide into smaller units with no interlocking parts.

The Gooferment did it to the Bell System. Why not Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netfix, and Google?

Seems like a good idea to me?

GOVERNACIDE: The FDA and the AMA are killing us with bad advice

Tuesday, June 27, 2017

https://nutritionfacts.org/2017/06/13/should-cancer-patients-avoid-raw-fruits-and-vegetables/

Should Cancer Patients Avoid Raw Fruits and Vegetables?
Written By Michael Greger M.D. FACLM on June 13th, 2017

*** begin quote ***

Three randomized controlled trials were published, and not one supported the neutropenic diet. In the biggest study, an all-cooked diet was compared to one that allowed raw fruits and veggies, and there was no difference in infection and death rates. As a result of the study, the principal investigator at the MD Anderson Cancer Center described how their practice has changed and now everyone is allowed to eat their vegetables—a far cry from “please don’t eat the salads” 31 years earlier.

Today, neither the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nor the American Cancer Society support the neutropenic diet. The real danger comes from pathogenic food-poisoning bacteria like Campylobacter, Salmonella, and E. coli. So we still have to keep patients away from risky foods like undercooked eggs, meat, dairy, and sprouts. At this point, though, there really shouldn’t be a debate about whether cancer patients should be on a neutropenic diet. Nevertheless, many institutions still tell cancer patients they shouldn’t eat fresh fruits and veggies. According to the latest survey, more than half of pediatric cancer doctors continue to prescribe these diets, though it’s quite variable even among those at the same institution.

*** end quote ***

Doesn’t anyone else see the problem?

The FDA, Big Medicine, Big Pharma, and the AMA are all in bed together.

“Evidenced based medicine” is fine as long as it prescribes more expensive drugs to be dispense according to Gooferment diktats.

You really have to wonder how stupid we are not to revolt against them killing us. They are worse than the “witch doctor in the jungle”. At least, he’s not being paid off to mislead us.

And, I’m sure that many doctors are faithfully trying save us. BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), they have a disadvantage in that they are getting a biased message.

Of course, there’s no “profit” in telling people that meat is probably as bad as cigarettes for your health.

Now, it hard to teach “old dogs” new tricks. Again, but, it can be done.

Argh!
