HEALTH: 31 Pics Of People Not Avoiding Contact In South Carolina Illustrate The First Stage Of A Tragedy

Friday, April 3, 2020

People and politicians in the US are reacting very differently to the coronavirus pandemic—it all depends on the state you’re living in. South Carolina has recently come under fire after some people on Twitter shared photos of Americans who aren’t staying at home and are ignoring the social distancing advice.

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: Managing a Disaster, by Walter E.Williams

Friday, April 3, 2020

in a disaster, we want people to economize their use of goods and services and we want suppliers of these goods and services to produce more. Rising prices encourage these actions. Anti-price gouging laws stymy those incentives and create the pretense that a disaster does not exist.

Source: Managing a Disaster, by Walter E.Williams | Creators Syndicate

# – # – # – # – #

Once again, the various levels of Gooferment can’t “manage a disaster” by eliminating “price gouging”!

The higher prices force economical acquisition and encourage increase supply.  The more the “gouging” the greater the incentives.

I was at the grocery store today and there was no paper towels available at the $1.79 price as tagged on the shelf.  Now if the store had raised its price to $17.99, then I’d bet there would have been “plenty” there.

I read somewhere that Walmart was selling canned corn on a special sale for 50¢ per can and couldn’t keep the shelves stocked.  When they went back to the “normal” price of 79¢ per can, there was no problem.  Such was the price sensitivity. A 60% rise eliminated “hoarding”!

When will the politicians and bureaucrats ever learn?

HEALTH: Urgent Questions About The Diamond Princess

Thursday, April 2, 2020

This post appeared first on Daily Reckoning . “Failure to comply with this order will result in a $5,000 fine and up to one year in prison…” We woke this morning to this menacing threat. It came issuing from the loudspeaker of a prowling police cruiser.

Source: Urgent Questions

*** begin quote ***

The Case of the Diamond Princess

Dr. Ioannidis cites the case of the cruise ship Diamond Princess:

Projecting the Diamond Princess mortality rate onto the age structure of the U.S. population, the death rate among people infected with COVID-19 would be 0.125%. But since this estimate is based on extremely thin data — there were just seven deaths among the 700 infected passengers and crew — the real death rate could stretch from five times lower (0.025%) to five times higher (0.625%). It is also possible that some of the passengers who were infected might die later, and that tourists may have different frequencies of chronic diseases — a risk factor for worse outcomes with SARS-CoV-2 infection — than the general population. Adding these extra sources of uncertainty, reasonable estimates for the case fatality ratio in the general U.S. population vary from 0.05–1%.

That huge range markedly affects how severe the pandemic is and what should be done. A populationwide case fatality rate of 0.05% is lower than seasonal influenza. If that is the true rate, locking down the world with potentially tremendous social and financial consequences may be totally irrational. It’s like an elephant being attacked by a house cat. Frustrated and trying to avoid the cat, the elephant accidentally jumps off a cliff and dies…

If we assume that case fatality rate among individuals infected by SARS-CoV-2 is 0.3% in the general population — a mid-range guess from my Diamond Princess analysis — and that 1% of the U.S. population gets infected (about 3.3 million people), this would translate to about 10,000 deaths. This sounds like a huge number, but it is buried within the noise of the estimate of deaths from “influenza-like illness.” If we had not known about a new virus out there and had not checked individuals with PCR tests, the number of total deaths due to “influenza-like illness” would not seem unusual this year.

I’m pleased that everything was restored and I was able to turn off “screen time”.

But why didn’t it work the first four time?

Clint Phillips, the CEO of telehealth company Medici, told Breitbart News Saturday that President Donald Trump’s telehealth reform has given 100 million Americans access to virtual care.

The Trump administration expanded Medicare telehealth coverage that will enable beneficiaries to receive a broader range of healthcare services from their doctors. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved a waiver that temporarily pays clinicians to provide telehealth services for beneficiaries. Medicaid recipients could receive access to the plan if a state government would approve the reform.

GOVERNACIDE: Vin Suprynowicz » Who stood to gain by panicking the nation & shutting down our entire economy, over an epidemic that will likely kill fewer Americans than the ‘regular old flu’?

Monday, March 23, 2020

I believe we saw something highly significant today: The Let’s-Trash-Trump-and-His-Economy press are reporting today’s incident as though TRUMP did something wrong. When Trump announced Chloroquine works both to prevent and to ameliorate the symptoms of coronavirus, Dr. Anthony Fauci of the massively commercially compromised National Institutes of Health promptly responded that it “hasn’t been clinically tested,” at which point Trump backed down and said it was “just his opinion.”

https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-undercuts-fauci-on-whether-chloroquine-can-treat-coronavirus-2020-3?op=1

But guess what? The expert wasn’t right. It’s Trump who was right. Fauci is part of the conflicted, sold-out mob that moves endlessly through the revolving door between the NIH/CDC and Big Pharma, all anxious to create big profits by peddling a new vaccine (even “free” vaccines can be billed to and paid for by the gubbimint – including the ones that are only 40 percent efficacious and can cause more harm than good, which is a lot of them.)

LIBERTARIAN: The State Is Not Your Friend – LewRockwell

The State isn’t a magical entity; it’s a parasite on society. Anything useful the State does could be, and would be, provided by entrepreneurs seeking a profit. And would be better and cheaper by virtue of that.

More important, the State represents institutionalized coercion. It has a monopoly of force, and that’s always extremely dangerous. As Mao Tse-tung, lately one of the world’s leading experts on government, said: “The power of the State comes out of a barrel of a gun.” The State is not your friend.

TINFOILHAT: Don’t believe conspiracy theories; coronavirus wasn’t created in a lab

Saturday, March 21, 2020

Anderson and her collaborators found evidence in the virus’ spike-like proteins, which help the infection grab and penetrate animal cells, to determine that they “evolved to effectively target a molecular feature” specific to human cells. The function is so effective, in fact, that they believe only natural selection could have produced such an efficient virus.

The Scripps teams also note that anyone attempting to generate a new coronavirus on their own — in a lab, for instance — would have used a prior coronavirus as a template. But the structure of SARS-CoV-2, they found, was unlike any they had previously encountered in humans, and instead resembled those found in bats and pangolins. Scientists believe the virus may have originated in a bat.

Dr. Josie Golding, epidemics lead at UK-based Wellcome Trust, also told Scripps that their findings are “crucially important to bring an evidence-based view to the rumors that have been circulating about the origins of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) causing COVID-19.”

Maybe you shouldn’t blindly believe everything you read? Even if the source has a pretty solid reputation?

*** and ***

Below is a takedown of that article, and the good news is a much more nuanced and honest look at the origins of COVID-19, the Wuhan Strain of coronavirus is just a click away.

Thus, the high-affinity binding of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to human ACE2 is most likely the result of natural selection on a human or human-like ACE2 that permits another optimal binding solution to arise. This is strong evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is not the product of purposeful manipulation.

As our report mentions right at the start, scientists passed the H5N1 Bird Flu through a series of ferret hosts until it gained ACE2 affinity and then became incredibly virulent, which is what’s seen with COVID-19 since its affinity to ACE2 is orders of magnitude higher than SARS. That process would leave a genome that appears “natural” and not purposeful as well since it wouldn’t leave a genomic smoking gun and would simply appear to be the result of “natural” selection. However the addition of artificial generations produced by this process of passing through ferrets in the lab would create a lot of genetic distance from any possible relatives – precisely what is seen in COVID-19: it forms its own clade and appears very distant from all other bat coronaviruses. So this is lazy research, they’re either unaware of the Bird Flu study or are willfully ignoring it.

*** end quote ***

So I, your faithful blogger and resident curmudgeon don’t believe ANYTHING.  Even that sun will rise tomorrow morning.  (Best I can say is: “It appears to rise every morning”!)

As far as the Wuhan virus is concerned, it’s an ideal Conspiracy Theory.  Because whatever is advanced as “proof” or “evidence” is probably tempered by politics, politicians, and bureaucrats.

HEALTH: Coronavirus crisis Deciding how to prioritize hospital patients

Friday, March 20, 2020

Happily, New York state put together a protocol back in 2008 titled “Allocation of Ventilators in a Public Health Disaster” (largely reaffirmed in 2015) designed for a moment like ours. Wisely, our state insists that age and health problems or disabilities unrelated to what is causing the epidemic shouldn’t serve as the basis for rationing. Prognosis for recovery is what matters.

A New York hospital could choose to give its last ventilator to the 72-year-old marathon runner rather than to the 57-year-old pack-a-day smoker. Again, based only on prognosis for recovery. The objectivity of the standard removes much of the physician’s subjective ideology from the picture.

Source: Coronavirus crisis: Deciding how to prioritize hospital patients

# – # – # – # – #

Seems like a good way to ration if it has to be done.

Like the organ donor controversy, the Gooferment makes rules (i.e., you can sell a kidney but you can starve to death; you can’t sell a dead relative’s organs even if you’re dead broke; some rules don’t apply to the elite) and then says “there’s a shortage”.

When ever I hear that there is a “shortage” or “surplus”, I just know deep in my heart that the Gooferment has screwed something up.

Why did we ever put the Gooferment “in charge of health care”?  I can’t conceive of what “healthcare” would look like in a Libertarian USA but I’m sure it would be better that what a mess we have now.

The meaning of “health”, “health care”, “health care insurance”, or something else is so muddled we can’t possible extract the Gooferment from it.  It’s like “who would build the roads”?  Do you think that WalMart, UPS, FedEx, and all the other carriers couldn’t figure it out without, as Tom Woods calls it, a guy with a bullhorn shouting out orders.  The truly Free Market would allow an efficient solution to evolve.

If health care was a “free market”, I am sure that Insurance Companies would have hospitals for their insured that would serve their Customers spectacularly.  By way of proof, i offer: health insurance, car insurance, and life insurance.  Notice the decreasing level of Gooferment “regulation”.  Notice, also, the decreasing level of cost and the increasing level of service.  Health insurance is a nightmare; life insurance is walk in the park.  Could there be a message in this example?  Ya think!

So now that the “China / Wuhan / Covid19 / whatever you want to call it” virus has drastically altered our society, let’s use it to create solutions with more freedom and liberty.

REMEMBER: “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” — Rahm Emanuel

So let’s use this opportunity to, for example, enshrine “distance learning” and close Gooferment Skrules.  Let’s create a national free market in “health”, “health care”, “health care insurance”, or something else.  Let’s get the Gooferment out of “health rules & regulations” that prevented “telemedicine”, free exchange of medical records between doctors, terminate the CDC & FDA replacing them with a version of the Consumer Reports.  Let’s take the monopoly privileges from Big Insurance, Big Pharma, and the medical cartel forcing them to stand up for their failures — no bailouts or limitations of liability for mistakes.

We’ll all be better off.

In a moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing to do, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing. — Theodore Roosevelt

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: Pentagon Warns They Aren't Set Up to Fight Coronavirus – News From Antiwar.com

Thursday, March 19, 2020

With many politicians long seeing the military as an all-purpose problem solver with a bottomless budget, it is unsurprising that the outbreak of coronavirus has many, particularly high-ranking Democrats, angling for a declaration of war and an outright militarization of the domestic issue.

“I would call out the military now,” Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden said on Sunday. He said it’s an emergency and the US needs to treat it like a war. He suggested that the military could provide a “surge” for US hospitals, building more beds and tents that are secure. “We’re at war with the virus,” Biden added.

It seems to be ludicrous to expect the military (mission = kill people and destroy things) to be able to do humanitarian tasks.

They maybe able to do some tasks (i.e., deploy a MASH unit; bury bodies in a mass grave; physically secure a perimeter — people may get shot), but that is NOT their area of expertise or operation.  Not that they wouldn’t want to help.  They are just not trained for that.

It seems that politicians and bureaucrats are delusional to thing that you can “drive screws with a hammer or pound nails with a screwdriver”.  But that shouldn’t surprise anyone.

In a moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing to do, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

GOVERNACIDE: The Coronavirus Hoax – LewRockwell

Wednesday, March 18, 2020

Governments love crises because when the people are fearful they are more willing to give up freedoms for promises that the government will take care of them. After 9/11, for example, Americans accepted the near-total destruction of their civil liberties in the PATRIOT Act’s hollow promises of security. It is ironic to see the same Democrats who tried to impeach President Trump last month for abuse of power demanding that the Administration grab more power and authority in the name of fighting a virus that thus far has killed less than 100 Americans. That is not to say the disease is harmless. Without question people will die from coronavirus. Those in vulnerable categories should take precautions to limit their risk of exposure.
