Giraffes can do math in their heads

Technically speaking, it’s a miracle of evolution that a giraffe can get its blood pumping 14 to 19 feet up to its brain to do much high-quality thinking at all.

But to the surprise of researchers at the Barcelona Zoo, the tall, hooved creatures are actually capable of doing complex mental math, engaging in statistical inference to assess probabilities and make predictions.

The study, conducted with four of the zoo’s giraffe’s by animal behaviorists as Barcelona University, two male and two female giraffes were shown two clear boxes filled with vegetable sticks.

Each had a mix of carrot and courgette sticks (zucchini), with carrots being the preferred option. But soon, the researchers started putting up barriers to the boxes, hiding visual cues and eliminating scent information.

In a stunning game of intellect, the giraffes managed to select which container was more likely to produce their preferred carrot sticks in 17 out of 20 experiments.

This was based on the relative frequencies of food in the containers, and not on other information such as their sense of smell, the researchers said.

I would assume that we, as humans, could learn a lot more if we were a little more humble in our position as the apex predator.

Aside from being beautiful, seems like giraffes have some “intelligence”.  I wonder if they will ever exceed or replace us?

‘Everybody Doesn’t Deserve the Same’: ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith Promotes ‘Equality of Opportunity’ over Outcome

Paul Bois  —  28 Mar 2024

*** begin quote ***

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith recently promoted the idea of “equality of opportunity” over the more egalitarian “Equality of Outcome” that left-leaning theorists extoll.

Smith made his somewhat surprising position on the subject known during an interview on the PBD Podcast hosted by Patrick Bet-David, in which he said that “people who produce more ultimately end up more successful than those who don’t.”

“One of the things that I have a problem with when I look at things that are transpiring in this country, you can’t in the same breath talk about capitalism, talk about how it’s equal opportunity that we want, but everybody doesn’t deserve the same, it’s about your level of production,” he said.

“Some people are high-end earners, some people are high-level producers and stuff. And you know, they’re getting treated, they might earn more than somebody that just don’t have that skill set. That’s the world we’re living in,” he added.

*** end quote ***

I was pleased that someone repeats Doctor King’s wish about “content of character” rather than color.

The NBA is a classic example of the best rise to the top.  Is the system perfect?  No.  But it does demonstrate what is possible when we have “equal opportunity”.

Now if we could just have equality in the law, then we ca get back to doing productive work.

But call an Easter egg a “Gesture Egg,” and I am done. Ten kinds of done.

In the 1500s, Tycho Brahe produced one of the greatest libraries of astronomical observations ever. Based on his work, Johannes Kepler formulated his Three Laws of Planetary Motion, in 1609 and 1619. He found that all orbits are ellipses, that bodies accelerate as they move toward the Sun and decelerate as they move away, The third law stated that the square of a body’s period was proportional to the cube of its semi-major axis (average distance from the Sun). Kepler also found a harmonious relationship between the orbits of the planets, such that we discovered new planets from the orbital positions given by Kepler. From these laws, Newton derived his laws of Universal Gravitation.

*** and ***

Besides the asteroid belt, there are Centaurs, TNOs, Damocloids, and Trojans which may be part of the Planet V debris cloud. Some of them have ephemera that clearly resonate with the asteroid belt, and a couple of them may be lost moons of Planet V, as well.

So do we have any evidence that any of this scenario is even approaching reality?

Why, yes, we do.

“The successful predictions include: (1) satellites of asteroids; (2) satellites of comets; (3) salt water in meteorites; (4) ‘roll marks’ leading to boulders on asteroids; (5) the time and peak rate of the 1999 Leonid meteor storm; (6) explosion signatures for asteroids; (7) the strongly spiked energy parameter for new comets; (8) the distribution of black material on slowly rotating airless bodies; (9) splitting velocities of comets; (10) the asteroid-like nature of Deep Impact target Comet Tempel 1; and (11) the presence of high-formation-temperature minerals in the Stardust comet dust sample return.”

The two most stunning confirmations have been the presence of asteroid moonlets and that comets appear to be the same as asteroids.

While this may TL;DR for most readers, I found this to be most persuasive.

Could an advanced alien civilization have existed on Planet V?

The footage shows the cargo ship never got in the approach lane in the channel. You have to be in the channel before you get into that turn. They chose a full moon so they would have maximum tidal shift – rise and fall. Brisk flow in that river on a normal day & have had a lot of rain recently so water was already moving along at a good pace.

Hit it with enough kinetic energy to knock the load-bearing pylon out from under the highway – which fatally weakens the span and then 50 percent of the bridge fell into the water.

I’m not convinced yet that it was NOT an accident!

But she does bring up some interesting “factoids”.

I am skeptical about how quickly the Gooferment responded to rule out “terrorism” or a “cyber attack”.  How could anyone have enough time or data to make such a judgement.

“Move along, people. Nothing to see here. Go home, you looky-loos.” Officer Barbrady’s Catch Phrase South Park

At the very least, the Gooferment has not done a very good risk assessment on the nation’s infrastructure if one “bridge / boat” collision can have such an impact.  Where are the risk mitigation efforts planned if this should happen.

Once again, like so many times before, the Gooferment is asleep at the switch/

The day after certification in 2022, the Ohio statewide voter roll database showed:

  •     58,209 resided in an apartment or in a mobile home lot but had no unit number as required on their voter registration application to ensure proper delivery of mail, including mail-in ballot material.
  •     4,143 were older than the oldest person in the U.S. at the time or were too young to legally register.
  •     6,348 had a date of birth that was different in 2022 than it was in 2020.
  •     253,486 voters supposedly registered on January 1st, 84,221 voters registered on another Federal holiday and 201,693 voters registered on Sunday — all times when Ohio boards of elections and state offices are closed.
  •     120,094 had registration dates in the 2022 state voter file that were earlier than their registration date in the 2020 file. 59,025 people were listed as registering to vote before they were born.
  •     243,583 had state identification numbers that had changed since 2020, even though federal laws require each voter be issued “a unique state identifier.” 34,233 had 2 to 5 registration records with different state identification numbers, making it possible for them to vote more than once.

Seems there is ALWAYS evidence of voter fraud.  What is everyone looking at?  They say “justice is blind”; maybe that is what is meant.

It’s also just stupid because the simple use of a VPN can bypass any “location check”.

Caulfield: Your Overly Brief Social Media Posts Are Sometimes Dangerous

*** begin quote ***

Wow, I have responded to some public requests to address questions about social media posts made by Canadian ‘misinformation’ ‘expert’ Timothy Caulfield, and now I find myself flooded with more requests. And I can’t help but respond to yet another one because the amount of potential harm to the public is too great.

*** and ***

These many nuances place the overtly short and simple comments in the X post into a much more appropriate context, don’t they?

The most important message to all readers: do not take the study that was indirectly referred to in Caulfield’s post, nor the post itself as evidence of safety or effectiveness of COVID-19 shots.

*** end quote ***

This expert really puts Timothy Caulfield in his place as a  “misinformation expert” in a long precision point but point critique.

When I read the reporting on the 217 vaxer, I dismissed it as a “mentally ill” individual.

And, when the media tried to use it as an exemplar of anything but mental illness, I thought “agenda driven reporting”.

But, when I read point by point critique Dr. Byram W. Bridle, I was impressed that there was a fellow who no only knew his stuff but could write it in a way that even a fat old white guy retired injineer could understand it.

In short, as Michael Malice says: ““… factual but not truthful.” — Michael Malice @michaelmalice.

There a lot of factoids pitched in the tweet and follow up stories, but the truth is in the critique.

In short, don’t get your medical facts from Social Media.

Unless you too are “mentally ill” with a death wish.

INTERESTING: NLRB has begun to end the amateur model of college sports

Wednesday, March 20, 2024

FROM 1440 https://join1440.com/

Dartmouth Athletes Unionize

The Dartmouth men’s basketball team voted to unionize yesterday, the latest step in challenging the long-standing amateur model of college sports. The 13-2 vote means the players will be allowed to negotiate on issues like compensation and working conditions, including practice hours. Dartmouth has until March 12 to file an objection to the union.

Last month, the National Labor Relations Board ruled the players are employees of the university after the varsity players submitted a petition in September to the NLRB requesting to unionize. Dartmouth filed motions last week to ask the NLRB office to reconsider its ruling.

The union vote comes amid a broader effort to cut back restrictions on compensation for student-athletes. The NCAA has historically barred college athletes from receiving compensation beyond scholarships (athletic scholarships are banned in the Ivy League) and some related costs of education. The NCAA proposed in December a new subdivision that would allow some schools to enter into name, image, and likeness deals directly with their students.

Well, it’s about time to end the farce of “amateur student athletes”.  Everyone in this charade is make a lot of money except the athletes.  It’s slavery.

Stay focused on the one thing.

The live newscast chopper footage of Plane #2 purportedly hitting Tower #2.

Can you do it?

Can you focus on that one thing?

I’m gonna break this down a bit more in the next post. Standing on the shoulders of giants, sure…and adding a few more insights.

::raises hand slowly:: is the shibboleth here.

Off the top of my head.

You are a photojournalist in a chopper documenting a historic “accident.”

Flying around the Twin Towers.

Trained and professional news gathering photojournalists do not zoom in to avoid an approaching plane flying directly at the Twin Towers.

This plane would have been visible incoming on the horizon.

Sure. Maybe it was Dolts Botching Shit.

Made it all the way to the big leagues in the Big Apple. Market #1. NYC.

Whooops.

Trained and professional Gleaming Talking Heads do not mistakenly say that noses of planes fly through buildings as we will hear Peter Jennings saying in the next video.

When I ran some of this last year, I asked if the anchor head voiceovers themselves may have been faked.

When I ran the Day Tapes, I asked if anyone could debunk them.

I want to know what is real. Exactly what happened.

And how it got done.

I’m still not sure I believe anything any one says about this tragic event?

There are so many discrepancies.

For me the one that causes me the most consternation is the undamaged passport of one of the terrorits?

That and WTC7’s convenient collapse with all the evidence of Pentagon missing money.

Just all doesn’t add up to me.

Reminds me of the River Road Tavern in Piscataway off Centennial Avenue to have a few quick ones before I had to jump on 287 and race for injinnering skrule up in the Bronx.

Laugh!  I miss those easy old days.  And the overtime paychecks!

Sigh!

Sadly so many wasted hours and brain cells.  If I knew then what I know now, what different world it would be.

The work of Quebec filmmaker Denis Villeneuve was shown in a room at a palliative care centre to fulfil the end-of-life wish of a long-time film fan in a special world premiere, well ahead of the official launch.

A man from Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Que., had an almost impossible final wish when he knew he was at the end of his life. The movie buff said he would like to see the film Dune: Part Two, which was set to be released on March 1, before he died.

He expressed this wish to Josée Gagnon, whose job is to accompany people at the end of life through her company L’Avant.

Sébastien Pilote, a director from the Saguenay region, put Gagnon in touch with Villeneuve, the renowned filmmaker, after she put a call-out on Facebook with the man’s last wish.

Noblesse oblige

Nice to see Hollywood doing something positive.

It’s a mitzvah.  (Nine out of ten Jews will tell you that mitzvah means doing a good deed.)  “A mitzvah is not just a good deed” — Rabbi Zushe Greenberg

In this case, satisfying a being fan’s wish, connects us all with the beauty of the act.  A connection with the Devine, the Universe, or whatever you call God.

So maybe there are some redeeming qualities in Hollywood.

NEWJERSEY: Don’t we “license” teachers?

Teachers With Sex Abuse History Still Get Hired In NJ, Report Says

  • Teachers with a substantiated history of sexual misconduct are still able to find work in other schools, according to a new state report.

NEW JERSEY – A 2018 law created to stop teachers with sexual misconduct and child abuse histories from being hired by other school districts is “rife with weaknesses and deficiencies,” a new state investigation found, and still allows problem educators to hide their past misconduct from their employer schools.

The report, published Tuesday by the State Commission of Investigation, found that problem educators have too much leeway in deciding what information about their past to report to a prospective employer and school officials can misinterpret rules or simply cover up allegations and findings of sexual misconduct after an educator leaves their district. There also isn’t a state agency tasked with ensuring schools and educators are in compliance, nor is there a standardized process for reporting and verifying information about educators with histories of abuse.

*** and ***

New Jersey’s so-called “Pass The Trash” law was signed in April 2018 and mandates school officials notify other school districts about teachers with documented sexual misconduct and other abuse cases. Under the law, schools are required to determine if a candidate was under any past investigations for sexual misconduct or child abuse; schools where the incidents took place must also respond truthfully to districts seeking to employ the same teacher.

*** and ***

“For years, teachers and school employees in New Jersey who engaged in sexually inappropriate conduct with a student were able to move to other school districts by quietly entering into confidential settlements with their employers that kept their past misdeeds secret.” the report adds. “Numerous reforms are necessary to make the law more effective and less prone to abuse.”

It would seem that the local BoE’s politicians and bureaucrats are failing to have the police investigate ALL complaints.  If warranted, criminal charges should be filed and the teacher’s license suspended.  If convicted, revoked … … permanently.

We see how ineffective drivers’ license revocation is in stopping serial DUI offenders, but, with teachers’ license, it’d be easy to keep them out of classrooms.

Argh!

Thanks to the Patch and Nicole Rosenthal for bringing this to the attention of NJ Taxpayers.  I’ll be asking my various “representatives” for an explanation.  It can be my deciding issue when it comes time to vote.

I also plan to ask them what they have done to pressure the Federal Gooferment politicians and bureaucrats to end the Gaza humanitarian disaster.  Can’t push enough buttons.  Maybe the Election Day pain will get the message across?

Sigh!
