LibreOffice 3.3.3 is ready for download

The Document Foundation announces the availability of LibreOffice 3.3.3, a new release of the most stable version of the free office suite for personal productivity, targetingcorporate users. LibreOffice 3.3.3 is already available for download at the following address: http://www.libreoffice.org/download.

According to Thorsten Behrens, a developer and member of the TDF Steering Committee, “LibreOffice 3.3.3 fixes several bugs and improves the security of the suite, to specifically address the needs of corporate deployments, where stability is more important than new features. This branch will be maintained until the end of the year, to allow a smooth and safe transition to LibreOffice 3.4.x.”

LibreOffice 3.3.3 is available for Windows, MacOS X and Linux (DEB and RPM), in over 100 different languages (more than twice the language coverage of comparable proprietary products). Users of LibreOffice 3.3.2 are invited to update their software.

Gay judge’s same-sex marriage ruling upheld
By LISA LEFF Associated Press

*** begin quote ***

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge has a message for those trying to salvage California’s gay marriage ban: Sure, the judge who threw out the measure last year is in a long-term relationship with a man, but he could still be fair to them.

Chief U.S. District Court Judge James Ware’s ruling Tuesday rejected arguments that former Chief Judge Vaughn Walker would potentially benefit from declaring the ban unconstitutional.

*** end quote ***

Sure, and you expected “justice” from a Gooferment court.

Then why was the judge’s home life kept secret?

You know that if it had been “out”, it would have been all over the press.

I “don’t have a dog in this fight” because as a little L libertarian I tout that the Goofermentshould have NO role in marriage.

Ann Coulter was on O’Reilly last night blathering about how “marriage has thousands of legal consequences” as if that justifies Gooferment intrusion into marriage.

Circular reasoning!

Gooferment “gives” marriage financial benefits, therefore it must “regulate” marriage.

The only reason we are in this problem is the racist “marriage license” laws in the first place.

Prior to the Welfare / Warfare state, when taxes were low and government didn’t intrude, there was no need for a Gooferment “license”!

Ron Paul said it in the Tuesday night Republican Presidential debate, leave marriage to the Churches and the People.

Unless it’s about control and plunder.

Argh!

If the Gooferment wants, let it treat the “family” as a Subchapter S corporation. Them’s that want to be a Gooferment corporation and get tax benefits of such “incorporation”, let them volunteer.

Of course, that would highlight the Gooferment trying to pick winners and losers by bribing them with taxpayer money.

And why do we allow that and let them pander to the electorate that they are “pro-famiiy”?

BAGHDAD (AP) – The U.S. military says two American soldiers have been killed while conducting operations in southern Iraq.

Tuesday’s statement didn’t give details on the operations, saying only the two were killed Monday. They were not identified pending notification of next of kin.

The new deaths bring to 4,462 the number of American service members who have died in Iraq since the war began in 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

And it brings to eight the number of U.S. troops killed in June so far.

VETERANS: WASPS were trailblazers

Overdue Recognition for Woman AF Pilot

*** begin quote ***

WII Women Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) 1st Lt. Elaine Harmon didn’t join the military for recognition but she certainly earned it. Harmon was one of the 1,074 women pilots who flew non-combat missions in the U.S. in order to free their male counterparts for overseas combat missions.

She knew the WASPS were trailblazers. “It was a man’s world, but we were doing what was needed for the war effort,” Harmon said. “My mother was dead set against it.”

*** end quote ***

I had the interesting experience of meeting a WASPS when I was a child. OK, a tween. But as most people, I was oblivious. I didn’t listen. Nor ask questions. And, no, I didn’t even take notes. I was OBLIVIOUS. Argh!

And, the way she minimized it, I didn’t think it was important. If a man was telling the story, you’d have thought he won the war single handedly.

That’s why I, a fat old white guy injineer, am a “feminist”. Woman need to be free to do what ever THEY think is important. And, while nothing is as fragile as a male ego, “we”, “We, The People”, need to allow them to do it.

Just like in WW2, we can’t afford the luxury of binding the hands of half our population. Just like we can’t afford racial discrimination!

Aside from the fact that such discrimination is immoral, it’s also ineffective and inefficient.

We need EVERYONE working towards the Common Good.

It’s just pure selfishness. I want everyone making life better for everyone.

Argh!

Why do women allow such foolishness to go on?

Sure, they made their mistakes — giving women the right to vote brought us Prohibition and Organized Crime — but they fixed that one. They still haven’t fixed “war” yet, but men haven’t been doing so well on that one yet either.

We need their “contributions”!

(I’d expect women to hold Congressman Anthony Weiner accountable for the cover up, lying, and some disgusting pics. We’ll see!)

TINFOILHAT: BHO44’s “Dreams”

4 curious errors in Obama’s ‘Dreams’

*** begin quote ***

Obama does not, however, make an unusual number of errors in regards to general knowledge. Let me cite the four such errors I found and explain why they deserve our attention.

Obama misquotes the Carl Sandburg poem “Chicago.” Instead of writing “Hog Butcher for the World,” he writes, “hog butcher to the world.”

In discussing radical anti-colonialist Frantz Fanon, Obama misspells his first name as “Franz.”

Obama refers to the South African city of Sharpeville, the site of a notorious massacre, as “Sharpsville.”

On another occasion, Obama misspells the name of rebel slave leader Denmark Vesey as “Denmark Vescey.”

*** end quote ***

While a pretty small TFH, it is important in my view.

We know that JFK didn’t write Profiles. And, it’s pretty obvious, that BHO44 didn’t write Dreams.

It’s interesting to peer into the souls of the plagiarizer and plagiarizee.

Why would you trust anyone who does that or cooperates in such?

Social Media’s Dark Side: Phishing and Scams

*** begin quote ***

Here’s what employees can do to avoid becoming the prey of phishing attacks:

1. Never click on a link or a bookmark which is associated with financial transactions or asks for any sensitive information; instead always manually type the URL in the address bar.

2. Don’t click on links which ask to download ActiveX or software on your system. These could be Trojan/malware which later becomes the control center to remotely control your system and others in the network.

3. Ensure that the site is authentic and using secure layer (https) before providing any sensitive information about yourself or your organization.

*** end quote ***

Good advice for real people as opposed to “employees”.

I’d add “Switch to Open DNS”. It’s free and will prevent you from being “speared” by a “phisher”.

(On a technical note, it does that by preventing your browser from resolving known bad names into ip addresses. Thus, you’ll see the Open DNS “warning screen” with the option “Get me out of here”. It’s not perfect, but another compensating control.)

TECHNOLOGY: A new language service

NEW POLICE LANGUAGE SERVICE SAVES PERSON

*** begin quote ***

On Tuesday South Brunswick Police used a new language service to help locate a victim suffering a heart attack. At around 10am a woman called 911 from a cellphone seeking help. The dispatcher was unable to determine where the victim was or the problem. The dispatcher connected to a translator through a new program used by South Brunswick Police called Interpretalk. The translator was able to assist the dispatcher with identifying the location of the victim within two minutes of being on the call. When police officers and EMS arrived they found the 49-year-old victim was suffering a heart attack. The victim was taken to a local area hospital and is listed in good condition.

The new translation service – Interpretalk allows dispatchers and police officers to be able to communicate in 157 languages, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The service which has been available to the department since March of 2011 has been used 7 times. Chief Raymond Hayducka said, “Our community is diverse and we want to be able to assist anyone in need. This new tool gives officers and dispatchers another way to get help to people in need in an emergency.” He added, “This case clearly demonstrates the importance of being able to reach out to all aspects of our community.”

The service is used once a dispatcher or officer believes there is a language barrier. The dispatcher contacts Language Sevice Associates who provide the translation. Communication Center Supervisor James Deery said, “We could not understand where the victim was and her being on a cellphone made it more difficult. The service Interpretalk provided was quick and provided the lifesaving measures she needed.”

*** end quote ***

Neat use of technology. From a network perspective, it’s really just a fancy three way calling option. Getting it all set up, agreed to, and paid for that was the heavy lifting. That’s effective use of technology.

New Zealand Court: Unborn Children Have No Right to Life
by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 6/1/11 6:00 PM

*** begin quote ***

The New Zealand Court of Appeal has issued a legal decision saying unborn children have no legal rights under the laws in the Pacific island nation. It also ruled on whether the Abortion Supervisory Committee was improperly approving abortions on mental health grounds.

*** end quote ***

“Rights”?

When do you get “your rights”?

The NZ Court seems to feel that when they say you can have them.

There’s another school of thought that says when you can pick up a gun and defend them.

It’s when one of two sides of a conflict have enough power to hurt the other side badly enough, then we have a concession. Enough of those and we have a general acceptance of mutually agree rights.

So, when do you get yours?

And, when do the politicians and bureaucrats agreed to leave you alone?

… when there are enough people in the streets willing to kill and die for the issue.

So what IS that issue that will reverse the Gooferment as the new uncrowned King of all life?

TINFOILHAT: The girl wearing a polka-dotted dress

The Robert Kennedy Assassination

*** begin quote ***

THE POLKA-DOTTED DRESS GIRL

Sirhan was seen in the hotel – including in the pantry itself – in the company of a girl wearing a polka-dotted dress. The girl and another male companion were seen running from the pantry after the shooting. RFK campaign worker Sandy Serrano, taking a break out on a balcony, saw them run from the hotel, the woman gleefully shouting “We shot him. We shot him.” When Serrano asked who they meant, the girl replied “Senator Kennedy.”

Unbelievable as this sounds, their behavior was corroborated by LAPD officer Paul Sharaga, who was told the same thing by an elderly couple in the parking lot behind the hotel. Sharaga was the source of an All Points Bulletin (APB) on the suspects. The girl was described consistently by most of the witnesses: dirty blond hair, well-built, with a crooked or “funny” nose, wearing a white dress with blue or black polka-dots.

There were many other witnesses to the polka-dotted dress girl, in the hotel and in the company of Sirhan in the weeks prior to the assassination.

MONEY: Pensions — an idea who’s time has past

Thursday, June 9, 2011

http://www.governing.com/columns/smart-mgmt/Whats-a-Pension-Perk-Worth.html

SMART MANAGEMENT
What’s a Pension Perk Worth?
Employers can’t pinpoint what the real value of retiree benefits is to them.
BY: KATHERINE BARRETT & RICHARD GREENE | JUNE 2011

*** begin quote ***

It’s conventional wisdom that there’s an awful lot of cash being spent to keep pension promises made to employees during the course of their work life. But what benefits — aside from the obvious humanitarian desire to provide a good quality of life for retirees — are these pensions buying for the entities that offer them?

One argument has been that higher pension benefits make for lower turnover and more qualified applicants. There have been a small handful of studies over the past two decades that support the very broad idea that employees of governments that offer pensions are often more loyal than those working for entities that don’t offer pensions. But even if we accept those assumptions without question, there doesn’t seem to be anyone who can tell us what the marginal value each additional dollar of post-retirement benefits buys — and what we give up if we cut benefits by any given amount.

*** and ***

Flying blind like this means governments that have been pushing for steep cuts in retiree benefits are risking a long-term negative change in their workforce that will make services costlier and less effective. By the same token, if cuts at a certain level could be shown to have minimal impact on workforce considerations, then there are a whole passel of states and cities that should consider making cuts without delay.

We don’t know the answer. But we sure believe somebody should.

*** end quote ***

If managers are trying to figure out the value of the “pension”, or any “benefit”, then “employees” aka “wage slaves” should be figuring it out as well.

Argh!

Remember that the “rules” for “Success in Your Generation” have shifted away from “pensions”. (As well as imho 401ks and IRAs!)

(To explain that parenthetical remark. First, 401ks are a captive of the employer. Abuses like Enron were the very tip of the iceberg. The current crop of 401ks are full of abuses. And, the mutual fund choices inside of them are also abusive. Read Ric Edelman’s writings bout mutual funds. Second, there continues to be rumors of taking “tax deferred accounts” in exchange for “enhanced social security”. Third, tax rates in the future and the value of the dollar cast doubt on the value of a pension. Especially when that supposed pension is decades down the road. Fourth, a pool of savings might provide the capital for a business venture. That might be a good bet. Or at least a better bet.)

You can create your OWN pension. It’s nothing more than a very very expensive annuity.

Read the blog post about a 5 year quarterly cd ladder.

You can do it yourself … cheaper.

And, gold, silver, and junk silver coins may be the best bet over all.

I’ve apologized to my wife and she has generously forgiven me. I’ve apologized to the young lady, her response is hers. Now, I’m apologizing to my constituents, I hope they will too. I expect to be the butt of a lot of jokes. And, I deserve it. Thanks.”

MONEY: The gallon of gasoline standard

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

*** begin quote ***

I’ve been preaching silver to my friends. It’s shocking that people don’t recognize how devalued the dollar really is. A hockey team moved to Canada from Atlanta today and the radio guy said a few years ago that was unthinkable because the dollar vs canadian dollar was so lopsided Canadian businessmen couldn’t compete. The NFL wants a franchise is Toronto and again the writer referenced that the dollar being so weak allows Canadians to compete in signing players. I’ve also been following the disaster better know and the Federal Reserve- Bernake may be a smart guy and a depression era expert but he can’t get out of his own way and talks himself into trouble.

And, I remember gas at 20 with trading stamps and an ugly glass and the fellow cleaned the windshield, checked the oil, and spoke english. Argh!
