Park rangers and more than 100 volunteers worked together to find a missing eight-year-old Maryland boy who got separated from his family while visiting a cave in Arizona.

Tzion Maron, of Baltimore, went missing near the opening of the Lava River Caves near Flagstaff on Wednesday after his family was unable to locate him in the immediate area, prompting search and rescue crews to be called around 6:15pm.

No details about how he got lost or what he did  — right or wrong.  Would be good for an “after action  —  lessons learned”.

Watching children over the years, I’ve learned (the hard way) to never ever take your eyes off them.  They seem to be able to “disappear” in a heart beat.

Now there are things like Apple air tags and Angel Sense to help.

If you’re not holding their hand, then you better have your eyes on them.

Glad for the good result.  Great help from various groups.  And a lesson to all of us to watch “our” kids.  Even if they are not “ours”.

I keep reading about people getting ripped off by home improvement people.

1) If you aren’t given a detailed quote on letterhead with a physical address you are taking a chance.

2) If you hire a tradesperson without a license, you are taking a chance. A licensed individual is accountable for his/her license and usually will not risk getting board complaints.

3) If you hire a person who has no insurance, you are taking a big chance. Ask for proof of insurance. If a contractor shows up at your house with a crew of day laborers and has no workers comp. insurance you can be held liable if they get hurt on your property.

4) A contractor should have the business name, location, license # on their trucks. That’s a law.

There is a reason some contractors charge more money, it’s called overhead. Licensed workers and insurance are for your protection.

Years ago, a friend of mine hired a guy “on the side” to put in an oil burner. The guy did a lousy job with the connections. A day later, a line leaked. His entire 500 gallon oil tank sprayed out onto the basement floor. It went into the sump pump and it got discharged into his backyard which had a stream. 500 gallons of heating oil into the stream and the inexpensive guy was nowhere to be found.

Get Help in an Emergency with a Medical ID on iPhone

While a medical alert bracelet or a medical ID card in your wallet may help in an emergency, there’s one more tool you can use to ensure you receive the prompt care you need—your iPhone! Even if you keep your iPhone locked with a passcode or Face ID, it’s still possible to have your Medical ID visible on your smartphone so that bystanders and emergency personnel can assist you in a medical emergency. Let’s get started learning how to set up the Medical ID on iPhone.

# – # – # – # – #

Not every “survival” situation happens in Death Valley, on the ski slopes, or in a national park.

BUT, wherever they occur, first responders need to know who and what they are dealing with.

I have this “medical id” set up on my iphone. Suggest you should too. And, recommend it to anyone you know.

During my time on the First Aid squad, there were many times when this would have save time and prevented confusion. Often, people couldn’t communicate key info and we were stuck. Just had to scoop ‘n’ dash and let the ER sort stuff out.

I think this feature, along with what3words location pinpointing app, are two of the things that EVERYONE should have on their phones. I’m sure Android has a similar feature.

RANT: Civil forfeiture needs to be abolished; only if people are convicted of a crime can their assets be taken

Law enforcement was able to take the money through a controversial practice called civil asset forfeiture. Advocates against the practice say it amounts to legalized government theft, at times from ordinary, innocent Americans.

*** and ***

Civil forfeiture has been effectively eliminated in only North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico and Maine, according to the Institute for Justice. But dozens of other states have tried reforming their laws. Some have elevated the standard for burden of proof that law enforcement has to have to seize property. Others have improved the transparency of their procedures, Rulli said.

A federal loophole makes it easier for law enforcement agencies across the country to evade state reforms. The federal government isn’t beholden to state laws, Rulli said, so law enforcement agencies can call federal authorities in, which will seize property and split the profits with the local agencies.

“I want to take a moment to recognize my cousin Andrew Henry and here’s why. My neighbor Gregory who is elderly, retired, and disabled recently had a sewer line break in our shared front lawn. The sewage was backing into the houses. After speaking with Greg a few times about the issue It became clear that he didn’t have the insurance needed to repair the sewer or have sufficient funds, actually none. As you can imagine it was an unpleasant situation and was not something that should be left unattended. Andrew spoke with Gregory and also found out that he is a retired Air Force veteran. After a few rounds of conversation back and forth, Andrew decided he wanted to help Gregory in a time of need. This Saturday, on his day off, and with a $1000 donation (cost of material), he gathered some help and put a new sewer line in for him. Thank you Andrew for giving back to your community and for helping Gregory and my family. The world could definitely use more people like you. If anyone in Prospect Park, PA or surrounding towns needs the services of an excellent plumber please consider reaching out to Andrew.”

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: Kei cars are the antithesis of the big American SUV — but let the Free Market decide

A cute, cheap death trap? Japanese Kei cars banned by yet another US state
Limited in size and power, Kei cars are like fishes out of water on US roads.
Jonathan M. Gitlin – 8/15/2024, 3:36 PM

*** begin quote ***

Kei cars are the antithesis of the big American SUV. Where EPA regulations effectively penalize automakers for building smaller, more efficient cars, Japan’s Kei car regulations cap size, weight, and power to just fractions. Kei cars aren’t just small, they’re also pretty cheap, a fact that has made them a sales success in Japan and highly desirable as a gray-market import, particularly by people who think new cars have gotten too large, too complicated, and too expensive. A few years ago, Ars even wrote a guide on how to go about importing one from Japan.

But not everyone is a fan of the diminutive Kei import. As far as the federal government is concerned, as long as it’s more than 25 years old, an imported car does not have to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards or fuel economy standards; just makes sure you pay all your import duties.

That’s because the federal government doesn’t license vehicles to operate on public roads. That task belongs to the individual states, and increasingly, they are giving Kei cars the thumbs down—sometimes even in cases where previously those cars posed no problem.

*** and ***

<<< a comment on the story >>>

Mungus the Unhyphenated

The root of the problem stems from an organization called AAMVA — the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. It’s an organization that’s part non-governmental regulatory organization (managing the Commercial Driver License system), part advisory organization, and part lobbying organization. They create more or less ready-to-deploy rules and legislative proposals.

AAMVA has had it in for “mini trucks” (Kei trucks) for years, and has expanded their efforts to all Kei vehicles now.

Do we really want an organization like this — which isn’t answerable to the public at all — effectively dictating to states’ motor vehicle departments? My thought is “no”, but how many average people even know of its existence, let alone agendas, to speak up about it?

GOLD: Pot of Gold found; testament to its eternal value

Archaeologists Find Literal Pot of Gold, but it’s Not in Ireland
By Andy Corbley – Aug 8, 202

*** begin quote ***

It’s one of the best things an archaeologist can hope to find: a hoard of gold coins. One was dug up recently in a terracotta pot, meaning that, if one sustains the pun, they found a pot of gold.

They didn’t find it at the end of a rainbow, however, but it was at the ‘end’ of something—Asia—as the Ancient Greeks would have considered it.

Excavations among the ruins of Notion, an ancient city-state in modern-day Turkey, turned up the foundations of a house dating to the Achaemenid Persian Empire buried under another house built from the Hellenistic Period, or about 180 years later.

“The coins were buried in a corner of the older building,” Dr. Christopher Ratté, lead archaeologist on the project, told the New York Times. “We weren’t actually looking for a pot of gold.”

The coins are known as darics, which stems from the name of the Emperor Darius I, or from ‘dari-‘ the root word for gold in the Persian language. Dating to the 5th century BCE, it was a time of great upheaval as Greek city-states fought against each other, against Persia, and sometimes on behalf of Persia against other Greeks, when mercenary soldiers made up key components of many major armies in Asia Minor.

The running hypothesis as to the coins’ provenance is that they were buried with the full intention of recovering them later. They probably represented savings, as each daric would be around one month’s pay. However, the fact that they were never dug up from their little hole in the corner of the house suggests the worst.

*** end quote ***

For a number of reasons, I loved this story.  Sad for the original owner who never was able to retrieve his stash.  Wondering about any reward for the discoverers.  Curious how much they are worth.

Mine aren’t buried, but could be if need arises.

There is something practical about having stashes and caches in turbulent times.

As usual, the politicians and bureaucrats of the Gooferment want everything they can steal so stash and cache are two prudent strategies for dealing with the modern day equivalent of pirates.

RALEIGH, North Carolina — Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday unveiled the economic policies she would enact in her first 100 days in office — and it comes with a whopping estimated $1.7 trillion in handouts, as well as government price controls on groceries amid ravaging Biden-Harris administration inflation.

Her economic plan includes measures to dole out $25,000 to help first-time homeowners with their down payments and give up to a $6,000 tax breaks for lower and middle-income families who have a child in their first year of life. Harris did not say what incomes qualify as “lower” and “middle.”

The housing subsidies alone are “absolutely inflationary” and would “push a $2 trillion dollar deficit even higher,” Brian Riedl, a senior economic fellow at the Manhattan Institute, told The Post, referring to the already projected budget shortfall for 2024. Those subsidies make up just $200 billion of the total $1.7 trillion handouts pledged to voters.

The “grocery price gouging” had me in a coffee thru my nose moment.  I fired off a blog post  —  along with a slew of other people, academics, libertarians, and real economists  —  from across the political spectrum.

I was so distracted and enraged I “overlooked” the $1.7 trillion in handouts.

Disney is trying to have a widower’s wrongful death lawsuit dismissed and sent to arbitration because the man had signed up for a Disney+ account several years ago.

Jeffrey J. Piccolo sued Disney Parks and Resorts in February, months after his wife, Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan, died after she consumed food containing allergens at a restaurant in Disney World.

Piccolo said in his complaint that he, his wife and his mother went to dinner at Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant at the resort in Orlando, Florida, on Oct. 5. They asked several times whether Tangsuan’s allergies could be accommodated, according to the complaint. Despite the server’s having assured them, Tangsuan had a severe allergic reaction and died at a local hospital, the complaint said.

“Let’s kill all the lawyers” is a line from William Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part 2, Act IV, Scene 2. The full quote is: “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”. It is among Shakespeare’s most famous lines.

First, the suit is only for 50k.  If I was on the jury, I’d question the number of zeros.  Some one made a clerical error. She’s a doctor.

Second, the Disney lawyer is trying to use an obscure factoid to absolve the restaurant of liability.

Third, the couple, knowing that she was at risk, should have been more careful.  To the point, eating out should not be a “game” of Russian roulette.  A substantive penalty should alert all restaurant operators to the risk; their insurance companies should price the risk accordingly,

POLITICAL: Kamala Harris is a communist at heart and economically illiterate!

Kamala Harris’ plan to lower food prices is ripped to shreds by Republicans, economists: ‘Economic lunacy’
By Victor Nava

Updated Aug. 15, 2024, 9:50 p.m. ET

*** begin quote ***

Vice President Kamala Harris’ plan to grant the federal government expansive new authority to control food and grocery prices was roundly criticized Thursday by several Republicans and economists, who argued that it was “big government on steroids” and “economic lunacy.”

The 59-year-old Democratic presidential nominee’s economic agenda calls for the “first-ever federal ban on price gouging on food and groceries” to be implemented within her first 100 days as president in order to “bring down Americans’ grocery costs and keep inflation in check,” according to the Harris campaign, which released details of the plan ahead of Friday’s official unveiling.

*** and ***

Jared Walczak, a researcher and vice president at the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, pointed out the slim profit margins companies selling groceries are making even as prices on food skyrocketed under President Biden.

“When Kamala Harris cites price gouging by grocers, these are the industry profit margins she’s railing against,” Walczak wrote on X, including a graph showing the 1.2% profit margins grocers made last year compared to 8.5% profit margins across all industries.

*** and ***

“Price controls are a SERIOUSLY bad idea,” he wrote on X. “They lead to shortages, severe misallocations of capital, and distort the ability to prices to signal the information we all need to make choices.”

‘They didn’t work when tried by a Republican (Nixon) and they won’t work under a Democrat, however strong the ‘vibes,’” Gregg noted in a separate post. “They only cause shortages and misery.”

“Will no fiscally responsible Democrat call out this irresponsibility?”

 *** end quote ***

I remember Nixon’s gas lines.  (Even Odd plates in the Pepuls Republik of Nu Jerzee.  We had one car and access to her brother’s with one even and one odd.  So when I went to work in the “bad plated car”, she would go sit on a gas line with the “good plated car”.  Sometimes for hours.  What a total waste of attention, time, and resources across all of society.)

I remember, that when I started driving in the sixties, three silver dimes would buy a gallon of regular gas.  Today those same three silver dimes, sold to a coin dealer would get you 6$, which would buy a little less that 2 gallons of regular gas.  And, today the gas is better and goes further.  Even after food (cord) is turned into “fake gas” and adulterated into regular gas. Argh!

SO what happened between the 1960’s and the 2020’s?

The FED “printed” a shit load of dollars which the politicians spent like drunken sailors (at least sailors spend their own money).  More dollars change the same amount of goods leads to inflation.

“Inflation is theft, you’re stealing value from people who save money.”-Ron Paul

William Rusher, the editor of the conservative National Review, quoted economist Milton Friedman as saying that “if the government were to take over the Sahara Desert, there would be a shortage of sand in five years.”

So only a socialist / communist would seek price controls.  What to curb inflation, #endthefed and restore fiscal discipline to the nation.

I’ve often thought the USA’s downfall has been at the hands of the Progressive Left.  Some changes like ending slavery were excellent; although done very badly.  Others, like the 14th, 16th, and 17th Amendments were disastrous.  The opponents of the Constitution were stunningly accurate in their predictions of what could go wrong,  And did!

“Would you tell me please, Mr. Howard, why should I trade one tyrant three thousand miles away for three thousand tyrants one mile away? An elected legislature can trample a man’s rights as easily as a king can.” Mel Gibson as the character Benjamin Martin in the movie The Patriot http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187393/quotes

I hope that “We, The Sheeple” recognizes that Harris is a whore that climbed the political ladder in the most disgusting way.  And, if she’s elected, then the USA is finished as a democratic federal republic.  Just like all the other empires crashed on a mountain of debt, so too will the USA.

Argh!

  • 🔴 Parents get pre-trial intervention program agreement
  • 🔴 Baby girl dies from skull fractures and brain bleed
  • 🔴 Judge suppressed evidence from text messages

A former police officer and teacher charged in the death of their infant daughter have reached an agreement with Mercer County prosecutors that avoids any time in prison.

*** and ***

Prosecutors said that Daniel Bannister, a police officer in Ewing at the time, hurt his daughter. Catherine Bannister was accused of knowing about the abuse, covering it up, and not getting her daughter help until it was too late.

Judge suppressed evidence from text messages

I hope someone explains WHY the text messages were suppressed.  Seems like very relevant information.

If there is not a great explanation, then the deal should be revoked and the Judge “retired”.

Argh!  Very sad.  How little human life is regarded in our society.

RANT: Punish the bureaucrats who screwed this up — both tactically and strategically

Family of Brian Terry reacts after 9th Circuit overturns murder conviction
By Sharyl Attkisson | August 12, 2024

The following is from the Brian Terry Foundation.

More than 13 years after the murder of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, Terry’s family is still seeking justice, and the U.S.-Mexico border remains in crisis.

Late Friday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the conviction and life sentence of a man found guilty of killing Brian Terry in 2010. Terry’s death exposed a botched federal gun operation known as “Fast and Furious,” and brought into focus the national border crisis.

Brian Terry’s uncle Ralph Terry said, “In more than a decade so little has changed. Our fight to seek justice for Brian is ongoing, at the same time our border security has worsened. This toxic combination led to the death of my nephew and sadly lessons have not been learned. As our current political leaders have turn a blind eye to the situation, they have empowered smugglers and drug cartels more than ever.”

The court in vacating the convictions of Heraclio Osorio-Arellanes August 9th, claimed his constitutional due process rights had been violated, sending the case back to the U.S. District Court in Arizona

Sorry, but the politicians and bureaucrats responsible for this got off scott free.

And, the bureaucrats, who screwed up the conviction, get no punishment?

We, the Taxpayers, get to keep on paying!

Argh!

POLITICAL: It’s about America’s Future, Not Trump or Harris … … end the fed and cut the Federal budget back 50%

The Election Is Not about Trump or Harris

The Harris campaign has raised upwards of $200 million and is garnering enthusiasm from the left wing of the Democrat party. If every one of 38.8 million registered Republicans sends the Republican National Committee ten dollars, we will have $388 million. Independents and centrist Democrats who value the future of our country can contribute as well, but don’t count on somebody else to do it. Do your part to help win in November.

Civis Americanus is the pen name of an American Thinker contributor who remembers the lessons of history and wants to ensure that our country never needs to learn those lessons again the hard way.

I’m not sure about sending $10 to the RNC.  Too many RINOs for my tastes.  But, I am sending $10 to my local candidate.

If we are to survive, then we need to #ENDTHEFED, cut the budget, and reduce the national debt.

The Gallery Place building in Washington, D.C. was visited by a cell phone linked to the home and work addresses of Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was identified as a potential assassin.

The visit was reported by the Heritage Oversight Project on July 22. Following the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump at a fairground in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, the Oversight Project, which is part of the Heritage Foundation, initiated a geo-location investigation.

In taking the “temperature” of this particular Conspiracy Theory, I judge it to be “3. More likely than not” that the Deep State was once again “involved”.

NEWJERSEY: Count on Gooferment to screw up big time

Officials spar over mistakes made regarding street repaving project

  • A street repaving project in Hoboken caused some controversy this week between local and county officials.

*** begin quote ***

There is a lot of finger-pointing over a paving project in the city of Hoboken.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla says that the county paved over drainage pipes and impacted some sidewalks – but there is more to the story.

Hoboken resident David Radlin says there was never a time when he wasn’t concerned with flooding at his home on the 100 block of Park Avenue.

“It’s notorious for flooding, so obviously anything that goes on in the street I pay attention to,” Radlin says.

And he was paying extra attention when he noticed a construction company pave over his sump pump drain.

Where was the on-site supervision?  Doesn’t take a PhD to recognize that something is just plain wrong.  And the home owner should have been screaming bloody blue murder until someone recognized the stupidity.

This should get the line painter, who painted over the dead squirrel, out of the Incompetence Hall of Fame replace by these folks.  At least the paint is temporary.

Argh!

GUNS: The AR-15 is the most popular model of rifle in the United States

AOC Accidentally Gives Gun Rights Advocates a Gift
By Tom Knighton | 12:30 PM | August 04, 2024

*** begin quote ***

Yet the courts have held that and many anti-gunners have even tried to approach the AR-15 as being a particularly unusual weapon. Despite it being the most popular model of rifle in the United States, some have even tried to argue that it’s not commonly owned.

AOC, however, in acknowledging that these are one of the most popular semi-automatic weapons in the nation, is also acknowledging that they are, in fact, commonly owned.

Whether you think “commonly owned” should matter or not, the reality is that many people do accept that as the standard, and for AR-15s, that hurdle has been cleared. If there should be a hurdle or not is a different topic entirely.

*** end quote ***

This “commonly owned” should not matter since we couldn’t own an automatic weapon for decades.  Not that a wise gun owner would want one unless you were facing a mob rushing you.  Then, you’d want to put as much as you could down range and wouldn’t worry about aiming.  Only in the movies, does the hero fire without aiming.

The Marines teach fire discipline.  “One bullet; one kill”.

AOC should be thanked for the rhetorical “gift”.
