Our Entire Society Is Becoming Addicted to Sports Gambling

Athletes are being caught in scandals, yes, but the bigger scandal is that the ease and prevalence of betting is driving a huge rise in addiction—and neither the leagues nor our politicians care.

*** and ***

Whenever I watch professional sports on TV, I’m always dumbfounded when I see online gambling sites as sponsors of the NFL, NBA, and MLB. If I remember my sports history correctly, we used to keep a significant distance between sports leagues and gambling to avoid scandals like the 1919 “Black Sox.” In this article, Alex Shephard argues that a partnership between professional sports and gambling has given rise to an even bigger scandal than thrown games: a huge rise in gambling addiction, particularly among young men. We’re already seeing an increase in bankruptcy and relationship problems due to online gambling. I suspect we’ll be reading more about the problems of online sports betting in the coming years.

I too see all the ads and know that someone is paying for the advertisements.  And they are not cheap.  And not run by someone with innocent motivations.

That’s all you need to know to see where this is going!

ECONOMICS: Big deffered contract takes a big risk?

Thursday, December 14, 2023

Baseball fans SLAM Shohei Ohtani’s ‘league-killing deal’ after it was revealed he will defer $680m of his eye-watering $700m contract… as rival supporters blast MLB’s ‘downright laughable’ decision to give green light | Daily Mail Online

  •     Ohtani’s deal will see the bulk of the contract paid out after it ends in 10 years
  •     Baseball fans were irate at the structure and that it was allowed to happen

The Dodgers must have channeled their inner Bill Belichick.  This will get everyone’s shorts in a knot.  Especially the politicians and bureaucrats in the Pepuls Republik of Kaliforkneeah.  That’s a lot of money they can’t steal.  And it’s a big risk to take on the financial stability of the Dodgers and the future value of the USD.  Wonder what kind of Futures Contract he’s buying to protect it.

While I understand the motivations behind “stretching the rules”, it’s NOT without some significant risks IMHO.

It violates my favorite heuristic (rule of thumb; “common sense”; pov) that one should always “take the money and run”.

It’s not beyond the imagination to conceive of the politicians and bureaucrats of the Pepuls Republik of Kaliforkneeah creating a special income tax rule for “deferred compensation”.  Watch for it!

AND, inflation AKA dollar depreciation is for SURE to erode that deferred wealth.

IDEA: Boycott MLB by supporting Little League!

You can start by choosing to attend a Minor League Baseball game… preferably a team not affiliated with an MLB franchise. Or, perhaps, a college baseball game. Even better, go rediscover the love of the game by patronizing your local Little League. And take the money you would have spent on tickets, parking, food, beer, and souvenirs and donate it all to the kids who still understand the game is about joy and love and competition and working together as a team.

Even better, those kids stand for the national anthem before the game, they don’t have agents and they’re thrilled to play for the rich reward of a snack bag handed out by alternating parents after every game. It’s in their contract.

Talk is cheap; especially when the action requested is so easy and fun!

See you at Little League.

POLITICAL: Too much politics is killing everything!

Major League Baseball Risks Losing The Last of Its Politics-Weary Viewers After Moving Game Over Georgia’s Election Law

Sports fans like me are simply exhausted by the endless hyper-politicization of everything in our culture, and we look to sports to escape, not to be politically assaulted. MLB would be very wise to avoid playing politics any further and instead focus on fixing their ailing game and playing decent ball.

*** end quote ***

It’s killing any patience I have with the “theater”.

The NFL pseudo patriotism was a “big straw” in breaking “this camel’s back”.

Argh!

SAD: Jose Altuve tattoo conspiracy should heighten MLB’s hunt

Monday, February 17, 2020

Really, in light of the high emotions surrounding this matter, shouldn’t Altuve proactively display his alleged tattoo, which Correa first mentioned to The Athletic? The shortstop said that his double-play partner wanted to hide the ugly, unfinished artwork on his collarbone, which on the surface sounds just as ludicrous as the other given explanation, that Altuve’s wife didn’t like it when he disrobed up top. Adding to the intrigue, social-media detective Jomboy pointed out that Altuve put on an undershirt late in the notorious American League Championship Series Game 6, then removed it prior to stepping to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.

RANT: AROD’s “death sentence”

Monday, August 5, 2013

Sorry, but I think AROD is getting the short end of the stick.

Where has MLB been for the last eon?

It’s not like this is something new. So why NOW?

It’s always about money. So I guess that there is a financial incentive to screw him.

If the Yankees were in first place, I doubt we’d hear a chrip.

And, from his age pov, he’ll be over 40 when he can play again.

It’s rumored to be 100M$ at risk! FOr that amount, it’s easy to see how this becomes a MLB priority.

Sorry, while i can’t stand a cheat, drug diktats make no sense to me. If he wants to trade health for dollars, why should we care.

Millionaires playing for billionaires.
