Hiker suffers hypothermia during trek on New England’s highest peak amid East Coast heat wave

In a striking contrast to the sweltering heat gripping much of the East Coast, a 55-year-old hiker from Texas was rescued in frigid and treacherous conditions Friday evening from the high peaks of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Caroline Wilson, 55, of Austin, Texas, was found hypothermic and unresponsive on the Gulfside Trail, approximately one mile north of the Cog Railway tracks, while hiking Mount Washington, New England’s highest peak, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said in a release.

The department said Wilson became incapacitated during the hike, prompting her husband to call 911 at 5 p.m. He told authorities that she could no longer move or communicate.

The White Mountains can be pretty unforgiving,” she said. “Weather changes here in a flash.” Photos from the scene of the rescue captured the misty environment and steep rocky terrain.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Department conservation officers, along with volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue, Pemigewassett Valley Search and Rescue, Mountain Rescue Service and personnel from the Mount Washington Cog Railway, mounted a complex response in severe alpine conditions to rescue Wilson.

Again, another unprepared hiker not ready for “severe hypothermia” in the middle of a heat wave.  Gets cold and wet in the mountains.

And, from personal experience, I saw those conditions twice.

First, in USAF Survival School, at ground level somewhere in the Idaho Montana forrest, we had hiked a few miles (maybe five) on a hot fall afternoon.  We camped out (think of a bunch of city boys playing Boy Scouts) and it start to rain.  The temperature dropped like a rock (Say 30 degrees) and everyone was cold, wet, and hungry.  Oh what fun!  At the debriefing from the “exercise”, the Senior Chief asked what we learned.  After eliminating the profanity, his message was “be prepared for the weather to change on a dime, Mother Nature ain’t your Mom”.  A lesson I soon forgot.

Second, a decade later, in Switzerland, as a tourist, we took ride to a (short) mountain by tram for five bucks a head and when we got out at a few thousand feet up, it was <synonym for the act of procreation> COLD.  I got the pleasure of buying a (one size too small) sweater at the Gift Shop at a premium price (which I donated before we left).  I remember that Senior Chief saying “I told you so!”.

Due to that unprepared hiker’s age, she would not be qualified for a Darwin Award.  But Mother Nature is not very strict about the award rules when handing out death sentences.  Again, look at all the resources used to save her.  Who pays?

ECONOMICS: 108 Economists were wrong because they saw Milei’s Results through their politics as opposed to their science

How Did 108 Economists Predict Milei’s Results Exactly Wrong?

  • Leading lights on the left said Milei’s free market reforms would be disastrous. Instead, they’ve been hailed as a miracle.

“Their understanding of how markets work and of how governments work is superficial,” writes Henderson. “I wonder if any of them, seeing the apparent success of Milei’s policies, are questioning their prior views. We can always hope.”

Indeed we can. But for now, it’s not unfair to assume from their silence that they’ve learned little from Argentina’s economic progress.

As President Donald Trump begins his own second term as president, there’s much he can learn from Milei’s first year in office.

This includes ignoring economists who claim that cutting government spending, regulations, and bureaucracy will result in economic devastation. And perhaps most importantly, the danger of using government printing presses to avoid making difficult budget decisions.

All the little L libertarians knew that, if allowed, Milei’s free market reforms would radically change the incentive structure in that socialist economy.  Just like that, freeing people’s competitive skills and ability from the chains of a Welfare State would stun all the pessimists.  And it did.

Inflation from 300% to 2.4%. GDP of 5%.

I guess that the people of any country would want stats like that.  Now it’s time to get the leadership that will give it to them.

SURVIVAL: Even the “best hikers” can need help and learn a lesson

Hikers on tallest mountain in Northeast rescued from whiteout snowstorm at 5,000 feet

Mount Washington in New Hampshire known for extreme weather conditions

Two experienced hikers were rescued from the tallest mountain in the Northeast after a whiteout snowstorm stranded them at about 5,000 feet on Sunday, authorities said.

Kathyrn McKee, 51, of Southborough, Massachusetts, and Beata LeLacheur, 54, of Westborough, Massachusetts, were trekking through a challenging Mount Washington trail in New Hampshire when the weather turned severe, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department (NHFG) said.

Temperatures dropped and winds kicked up, blowing snow so that the trail the friends were following was completely erased. The pair pushed through chest-deep snow, lost on the mountain.

*** and ***

Temperatures at the summit fell to -2 degrees and sustained winds blasted at 50-60 mph, often with gusts significantly higher, by the time the agency began a rescue operation at 8:30 p.m., Holmes said.

*** and ***

A half hour later, the rescuers found the two hikers alive and coherent, though both were suffering from cold weather injuries. The rescue crew set up emergency shelters and began to warm both hikers, who were able to move on their own after about an hour, officials said.

Experienced hikers with advanced training still got in trouble.  Imagine being in their situation.

When I was in USAF survival school in “good weather” during October in (I think) Idaho, I was cold, wet, and befuddled.  And, we had “instructors” nearby to make sure we didn’t kill ourselves.  And, it sure seems in retrospect we were trying: “camping in a dry stream bed that became wet at night”, blundering around a night to find “firewood”, making a fire with wet tinder, etc. etc. … And they in the “after action session”, we found out that we weren’t “the worst”.  One group tried to make a tea out of hemlock and another tried to take down an adult female deer with a Swiss army knife.  The instructor kicked over the tea and the deer was last see scampering out into the night with a Swiss army knife in her butt about a quarter inch.

Seriously, I think that the various parks should have rescue insurance so the taxpayer doesn’t have to bear the costs.

When I think how much calling an ambulance in the city costs, calling for rescue should be expensive enough to be “instructive” to avoid it in the future.

I asked Uncle Bing one time, ‘What was the single most difficult thing you ever had to do in your career?’ We were out playing golf one day, and I didn’t know what he was going to say,” Howard told Fox News Digital. “I didn’t know if he was going to say, ‘Well, it was, you know, learning lines for the movies or working with a difficult director.’”

He continued, “He didn’t have to think about it at all. He said, ‘Well, 1944, we were over with the USO troupe.’ And he said, ‘We gave an open-air concert for 15,000 GIs and British Tommies in an open-air field in France.’”

His uncle told him Dinah Shore and the Andrews Sisters were at the show “‘and we had a lot of laughs and the boys were having a wonderful time, great fun.’ But he said at the end of the show, ‘I had to sing “White Christmas.” And I had to get through the song with 15,000 guys in tears and not break up myself.’”

“And a lot of those boys died the next week in the Battle of the Bulge,” Howard added.

But he said, ‘If I’m entertaining troops, I’m not going to wear anything phony like a toupee. Forget it.’ So he went onstage without a toupee for the troops, but he also insisted that the front rows at those shows were reserved for the enlisted men. No officers or higher-ups sitting in the front rows. Those were all for the guys on the front lines.”

Noblesse oblige

And, why war is terrible on everyone.

A blind hiker and his guide dog are safe after being rescued by a US Coast Guard helicopter crew when they became stranded for days in the heat on an Oregon hiking trail.

The US Coast Guard Pacific Northwest announced an aircrew had rescued a 55-year-old man and his dog from the Rogue River Trail in southwest Oregon.

The hiker, who officials said is legally blind, began hiking the trail with a friend and his guide dog July 3 and began to show symptoms of heat exhaustion July 6.

Officials said that, due to lack of cellphone service, the friend left the unidentified man and his dog with food and water and headed toward Gold Beach to call 911.

Small businesses accuse Missouri city of forcing them out with baseless blight label to score lucrative deal
Small businesses file lawsuit against St. Louis suburb in eminent domain case

Three small businesses are suing a St. Louis suburb, accusing the local government of sneakily steamrolling them to make a hefty profit through a deal that could financially cripple longtime mom-and-pop shops.

“All the politicians say every day on the news how great we are, but when we’re in their way, we’re not so great,” Feather-Craft Fly Fishing President Bob Story said about small businesses. “You can be a part of a community for 30-plus years and be treated like you’re worthless.”

The city of Brentwood, Missouri, is threatening to use eminent domain to force out businesses on a major road for a multi-million dollar redevelopment plan. A few longtime business owners accused the city of making a groundless claim that the area has been “blighted” to justify the lucrative project on Manchester Road, leading them to file their lawsuit.

*** and ***

Property owners could either sell willingly or be forced out by eminent domain.

In 2005, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of cities using eminent domain to seize property for economic development in the Kelo vs. New London case. Certain states, including Missouri, have since taken steps to protect property owners, but loopholes have allowed cities to take advantage of vulnerable areas like Manchester Road, the business owners said.

In Missouri, state law allows the government to seize private property that has been deemed blighted, broadly defined as having “insanitary or unsafe conditions, deterioration of site improvements” or other factors that present “economic or social liability.”

*** end quote ***

In Kelo, a neighborhood was seized and flattened for a Pfizer Headquarters that was never built.

Wonder whose nests got feathered by that “deal”?  Wasn’t the home owners.

Sounds like the same type of “deal” here.

A group of good Samaritans saved a driver in Minnesota after he crashed and became trapped inside his car as the vehicle burst into flames along I-94 on Thursday.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. near Snelling Avenue in St. Paul, when a Honda SUV went off the road and hit a light pole before catching fire, the Minnesota Highway Patrol said.

Kadir Tolla, one of the good Samaritans who ran toward the spurting flames to help, told FOX9 Minneapolis that he was on his way to meet clients when he passed the burning wreck.

“… … and this is a weaker argument that is stronger than it appears. Chinese Obligation. The Chinese have a saying that saving a life incurs a two way debt. The one saved owes their life to their savior; doing less would be ungrateful. The one saving owes the saved their continued help lest the save be in vain; doing less would be wasteful of the original act.” — brainy character “Brian” in CHURCH 10●19●62 Volume 1 Page 223

I always admire those that can disregard their own safety to save a fellow human being,

I don’t understand why every driver doesn’t have a window punch on their keyring.  For a couple of bucks it enables you to punch out a window and cut a seat belt.  Seems a life saving essential.

I hope that the Karmic wheel rewards these brave people.

Utah mom fights for her daughter’s access to discontinued diabetes medication: ‘Life-saving’

  • Family found the ‘ideal’ drug for managing diabetes — then it was abruptly discontinued

Smart has now made it her mission to convince Novo Nordisk to continue making Levemir — or to find a pharmaceutical company to create a biosimilar (generic) alternative.

Levemir is a long-acting basal insulin that’s injected once or twice a day to control high blood sugar in adults and children with diabetes, according to Novo Nordisk’s website.

For Smart’s daughter, an active athlete who plays on the tennis team at Woods Cross High School, Levemir has enabled her to continue with her regular activities while controlling her diabetes.

While there are a couple of other types of basal insulin on the market, Smart said Levemir is best suited to her daughter’s needs.

“Levemir is unique in that it is a relatively shorter-acting basal insulin, making it ideal for those with fluctuating basal insulin needs, including teenagers, menstruating women, pregnant women and athletes,” she said.

*** end quote ***

Doesn’t Novo Nordisk’s decision make Levemir an “orphan drug”?

If it’s not worthy of the Federal Gooferment’s support, then at least it should become unpatentable and free to generic makers.

I don’t understand how patent and copyright holder can hold things “hostage” and still get “protection”?

Sorry, society’s grant of these privileges is subject to them being made reasonably available.

IMHO

Argh!

Gooferment is always at the root of problems.

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: Let’s install “wrong way” prevention devices on major highways

North Carolina trooper uses his own car to stop suspected drunk driver
By Lorraine Taylor, Fox News

*** begin quote ***

A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper is being credited for saving lives by putting his own life on the line to stop a suspected drunk driver from entering an interstate going the wrong way.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Trooper Cody Thao used his own patrol car as a barrier to stop the driver who was speeding up an exit ramp the wrong way. The dramatic crash was caught on dashcam video.

Police said Trooper Thao was called in to help with a pursuit in the early morning hours of April 8. Just as the trooper arrived, the pursuit arrived onto the I-40 eastbound ramp to Rock Quarry Road in Wake County. The suspect started driving the wrong way on the ramp.

The video shows Trooper Thao intentionally drive his own car into the path of the suspected drunk driver to stop him from entering the interstate going the wrong way. Amazingly, the trooper was not injured.

“I could not be prouder of Trp. Thao and his quick decision to stop the wrong way driver, his actions most undoubtedly saved lives,” Colonel Freddy L. Johnson, Jr., commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, said in a statement. “His willingness to put himself in harm’s way is representative of the lifesaving work our members do each day. Placing others before ourselves is not just a saying amongst the law enforcement profession, it’s a reality of what we do for the betterment of the communities we serve.”

*** end quote ***

This inspires three points:

FIRST, kudos to the trooper who risked his life to save others.  No doubt not doing this pretty much would ensure a potential catastrophic accident.

SECOND, my continued harping on why we down engineer roads to prevent this from happening.  Parking lot owners have devices that will shred tires if you back up over them or exit the wrong way.  Why can’t we deploy these on interstates?

THIRD, DUIs that are not “Micky Mouse” — over a numerical limit at a checkpoint, please — but damage property, hurt some one, or (Heaven Forbid) kill some one need to be SEVERELY punished.  No “first time” discount for that type of DUI,

Argh!

Don “Munch” Gardner, a Marine Corps veteran, was secretly taped honoring the flag by Huntingdon, Utah resident Brooke Cowley, according to Fox 13.

“I was a complete idiot! I was cleaning our porch while the kids did an Easter egg hunt. I threw away our flag and pole because it had broken and ripped,” Cowley wrote on Facebook. “Then I witnessed our ‘garbage man’ stop get out of the truck, unhook the flag and take the time to fold it!”

GOVEROTRAGEOUS: Biden administration’s covert effort to relocate thousands of illegal border-crossers

Friday, February 4, 2022

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/the-border-gets-worse-and-worse

The border gets worse and worse
by Byron York, Chief Political Correspondent | January 31, 2022 10:25 AM

*** begin quote ***

THE BORDER GETS WORSE AND WORSE. These days, the Biden White House talks a lot about the border. At press briefings, there are many questions about the border. But it’s the Russia-Ukraine border. Meanwhile, the situation on the U.S.-Mexico border is deteriorating daily.

Two new developments. One, we are learning more about the administration’s covert effort to relocate thousands of illegal border-crossers — single, adult males, not families — into the nation’s interior. We’ll talk about that today. And tomorrow, the second development — new information about the changing makeup of the thousands of people crossing the border illegally each month.

First, the relocation effort. Last week, Fox News broadcast body camera footage from security officers at New York’s Westchester County Airport, about 30 miles outside Manhattan. It was the middle of the night. An unmarked passenger jet had just landed, and a steady stream of single, adult men came down the plane’s steps. They were accompanied by federal contractors.

*** and ***

The public knows very little about this process. How many illegal immigrants have been relocated? Where have they been sent? How many have been charged or convicted of crimes? How many have complied with the requirement to check in with immigration authorities? What nongovernmental organizations are assisting them? How much is the federal government paying for this? Is there a limit on how many will be relocated? And more.

The bottom line: Yes, the news is filled with reports on Ukraine, or COVID, or the latest twists and turns of the Biden agenda on Capitol Hill. But what’s happening on the border — the U.S.-Mexico border — is important news, and you need to know more about it.

*** end quote ***

What can we do to get the Biden administration to follow the law?

They are just trying to upset the voting balance of the country and penalize the “red states” for their political votes by loading them with social costs (i.e., crime, welfare, homeless).

Argh!
