Text Messages: Digital Lipstick on the Collar
By LAURA M. HOLSON
Published: December 8, 2009
*** begin quote ***
Robert Stephan Cohen, the lawyer who represented Christie Brinkley in her divorce from Peter Cook, said a spouse’s finding out about a cheating partner by reading their personal text messages would have a profound effect on how such cases were played out, both in court and among friends and family. Mr. Cohen predicted that the battles in even the most routine divorces would become uglier with more text messages as evidence.

People really don’t understand the technology they are using. Nor, do they understand the implications of an “eternal love letter”.
And, in a corporate setting, it’s even worse. Why aren’t they REQUIRED to preserve email forever.
The “digital dirt”, created voluntarily, CAN come back to haunt you.

For Japanese couples forbidden to marry, leaping from Mount Fuji used to be a common place to end their lives, but when the government erected a sign about the pain it was causing survivors, the suicide rate plummeted. Posting on Facebook could have a similar effect.

I had a boss who committed suicide. It was said that the technology changing scared him. I hope that’s not right. He could have asked for help. THere were a lot of people who liked him for his caring and could have helped ease the transition worries. Maybe life would have been different if he had. Or if we’d known. We’ll never know.

Save the Greenback, Mr. President

All this massive spending and borrowing is killing us. We need to be slashing tax rates on large and small businesses. There’s just no better place to begin job creation. And leave the Bush tax cuts in place for heaven’s sake. This supply-side shock therapy would save the dollar. And it would put real long-term torque into the recovery.
*** end quote ***
Unfortunately, the President is not going to defend the dollar. The Fed ain’t either. And, the congress critters are going to spend like those proverbial drunken sailors. (At least the sailor spent their OWN money.)
So what are the little folks to do. Get ready for a lost decade or two. Study Zimbabwe for how tough life is going to be as the world passes us by.
But some bullion to preserve wealth. Just don’t get ripped off by overpaying.

On Larken Rose, Libertarian Organizations, and the Means to Achieving Liberty
Posted by Karen De Coster on September 8, 2009 09:17 AM
*** begin quote ***
I think, at this point, that nothing can be fixed via the political process. No ballots, no politicians, and no libertarian-lite legislation is going to restore liberty, because the political process has become so corrupt and its agents are immensely wealthy and empowered. We don’t have the political power to defeat them outright, but we do have the individual power – working in concert with one another – to resist them, impede them, protest them, deny them, and ally with others who wish to do the same.

Four Ways to Be Happier – About Your Past
from The Coach Approach by Lora Banks
*** begin quote ***
Rewrite Your Personal History. You can actually sit down and write a version of your personal history simply highlighting all of the great events of your past. Try to stick to some semblance of fact. If you embellish too much or try to put a positive spin on say a traumatic experience, you will find your mind busy judging and debating the details rather than relishing the positivity of the past. And you don’t have to actually write it down. We tell our personal stories all the time and they reinforce how we think and feel about our past. Choose the stories that reflect the the gems rather than the rocks and you will in effect, rewrite history – your history that is.
*** end quote ***
ROFL, I kinda did that when I wrote “CHURCH 10●19●62”. I wrote what I thought when I was a child. Carried the story for decades. And, was tickled when it was in print. No one should leave the “universe” with their song unsung. Why leave it to other to write?

Boy, 9, killed rescuing duck from the road
By Joel Currier
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

*** begin quote ***
ST. CHARLES COUNTY — Danny Bampton’s compassion for animals cost him his life.
Investigators say the 9-year-old St. Charles County boy was riding with his mother on Highway P near a relative’s house Wednesday afternoon when he saw an injured duck in the road and asked her whether he could save it. After she pulled the car over, Danny hopped out and put the duck in a roadside culvert on the south side of the highway.
But when he tried to cross back over the rural, two-lane road to his family’s car, Danny was struck by a westbound Subaru Legacy driven by Alayna R. Hitz, 18, of Wentzville.

Wow, what a tragedy for ALL involved.
I bet Mom is going to rethink that decision for a long time.
Accidents happen.
But, someone always wins the lotto.
Maybe, there’s a lesson there. But I’m having a hard time seeing it.

Pink Slip Nation
by Gary North
*** begin quote ***
The re-sets will not be re-set. The lenders will face walkaways. Not that many home owners have enough savvy to keep paying on the mortgages, on the assumption that the lenders will not foreclose.
*** end quote ***
There’s a pearl of wisdom in here.
In an ARM (adjustable rate mortgage), there are times when the interest rate “resets”. Goes higher from the “teaser rate”.
Here’s the gem.
Just ignore the reset.
The bank can’t afford to foreclose. It can’t afford to renegotiate. It’s “hung”.
Payers should just keep paying based on their old schedule. There may be idle threats from the bank. (The smaller your bank the better.)
When does the chicken come home to roost?
I’m not so sure. When this trouble works itself out, interest rates may be lower and the ARM resets back down? When the bank eventually gets shut down and acquired by a bigger bank? When the Ponzi scheme runs out?
When it does go to foreclosure, the homeowner will have a valid argument: precedent. The bank kept cashing my checks, didn’t foreclose, so it — remember my law degree is from the Judge Judy school of law — has accepted a modification!
Very cute! No?
Just ignore the big bad wolf cause he can’t blow very hard!
This may be wrong, but I’m not so sure. I think it’s a very very savvy move. And, costs the homeowner nothing to try.

EMI Only Selling CDs To Mega-Chains From Now On
from Slashdot by samzenpus
*** begin quote ***
farrellj writes “According to Zero Paid, record company EMI has been notifying small music stores that they will no longer be able to buy EMI CDs from EMI, and will have to buy product from Mega-Chains like Walmart. Independent Record store customers are some of the most loyal music buyers around. You are not going to find the back catalog, what used to be the staple of the music business, at your local Walmart. One wonders when the Music Business is going to run out of feet to shoot?”

I like clever formulations.
“… when the Music Business is going to run out of feet to shoot?”
That seems so descriptive of some of my best disasters.
Argh!
