Any surprise that I rated it “unsatisfactory”.
I don’t want two clicks. I want one after I sign in.
Repeating how to do it is just torture.
And, I suspect a “canned” bot.
No wonder they are going broke.

Lots of techie problems this week and it shows. Took almost 5 hours to do what normally takes 45 minutes.
Biggest problem is that GOOGLE READER changed. Silently, no notice. Now I can NOT cut ‘n’ paste an expanded series of stories.
No way; no how.
Chrome, Firefox, and Opera — all act the same.

Subject: Google Wave Sunsetting in 2012
Dear Wavers,
More than a year ago, we announced that Google Wave would no longer be developed as a separate product. At the time, we committed to maintaining the site at least through to the end of 2010. Today, we are sharing the specific dates for ending this maintenance period and shutting down Wave. As of January 31, 2012, all waves will be read-only, and the Wave service will be turned off on April 30, 2012. You will be able to continue exporting individual waves using the existing PDF export feature until the Google Wave service is turned off. We encourage you to export any important data before April 30, 2012.
If you would like to continue using Wave, there are a number of open source projects, including Apache Wave. There is also an open source project called Walkaround that includes an experimental feature that lets you import all your Waves from Google. This feature will also work until the Wave service is turned off on April 30, 2012.
For more details, please see our help center.
Yours sincerely,
The Wave Team

This should make anyone wary of depending upon any “free” services. “Cloud” translates to “Could disapear at the providers’ whim”. Yeah, this could never happen to “GMail” or “Yahoo” or … or … — time to wake up folks. If you ain’t paying for it, you may not have it. And, even that’s no guarantee. ?????
And how or why would you try to copyright an email like this? A lawyer’s wet dream!

Destined to Be Crossed Out…
*** begin quote ***
Slightly off-topic—but nonetheless inspired by my perusing this physical phone and address book—I cast my eyes to the future and ponder what, for instance, people’s Facebook friends list might look like in ten, twenty, and thirty years. Of course, I conduct this speculative endeavor of mine in a metaphorical laboratory. Foremost, I assume that all things remain equal—i.e., pretty much as they are now on the Facebook frontier in, say, 2020, 2030, and 2040—which is highly unlikely. I also presume an unfathomable reservoir of long-term patience for inappropriate behavior, the bane of countless people’s Facebook walls, and not a bountiful human trait.
Okay, it’s the year 2035, and that guy with 1,263 friends in 2011 is down to 347. He hasn’t heard a peep from at least 163 of his remaining friends for more than a few years, and 42 of them have only recently disappeared from sight and sound, seemingly vanishing from both the virtual ether and face of the earth. And since Facebook doesn’t comb through obituaries and the Social Security Death Index, nor readily delete accounts, many of these missing in action friends are very possibly deceased, and more than a few are living in assisted living homes or—worse still—in nursing homes sans any access to Wi-Fi. Who would have thought that a Facebook page enduring long after one’s death might be an individual’s best chance at immortality? Life is full of surprises…and so is death…especially now in the Information Age…

AOL To Discontinue LISTSERV
by Soulskill
alphadogg writes “On December 1, AOL will shut down its free LISTSERV-based mailing-list hosting operations, the company has told mailing list administrators. ‘If your list is still actively used, please make arrangements to find another service prior to the shutdown date and notify your list members of the transition details,’ an email notice sent out by AOL stated. At the peak of the service’s popularity in the late 1990s, AOL was the third-largest provider of mailing lists, serving more than a million users.”

Read a fellow alum’s blog. It was too personal to link to. but she used an interesting turn of a phrase … “mouse to spouse”. Referring to the various dating sites. Having just attended a wedding that started with an internet chat, maybe she needs to rethink that disgust with such services.
Now I’m not shopping for a “spouse”, but a “mouse” might not be a bad way to go. As an ITSJ (sic), it fits my predilection.

Doing It Right: Google Docs Apologizes for Yesterday’s Outage
By Jon Mitchell / September 9, 2011 10:50 AM
*** begin quote ***
Downtime is the bugaboo, the monster under our bed at the dawn of the cloud era. No service is 100% reliable, but cloud services are becoming more and more vital to keep our businesses running and our sites up. A cloud service provider’s handling of an outage is absolutely crucial to keeping its customers happy and earning their forgiveness. But since outages usually require detailed technical explanations, they are often left to engineers whose tone might not be as gentle or apologetic as can be. When Amazon’s EBS hosting services went down in April, bringing some of the Web’s most important sites with them, the explanation was long-winded and dense, and the fallout was not handled well. Warren’s post today couldn’t be more different.
*** end quote ***
That’s more than a “bugaboo”.
If you’re getting the service for free, you get what you pay for.
No gripes allowed.
But if you’re betting your life or livelihood on the “cloud”, then you better have some contingency plans.
A current back up, with Open Office or another such capability.
Might make the diff between paycheck and unemployment?

“I was awoken by a loud bang,” said Hislop. “I could feel the boat tipping over. I just went into survival mode; I was the last out of the boat. There were four of us sleeping below deck with minimal protective clothing.“The hull fell fast. There was no chance of even cutting the life rafts free.
*** end quote ***
Lot of lessons in this story:
(1) What will you have on you when you’re tossed into a survival situation?
(2) Experienced sailors caught short. Preparedness mindset? Could be fatal.
(3) In a group willing to help, but can’t be seen. Flare pens in an always worn suvival vest.
(4) Rescued by Gooferment forces standing by. Who pays for that, and all the other, rescues?
(5) What happens when those forces are not standing around waiting?
(6) What happens when you are where those forces are?
(7) I don’t boat, but this convinces me to get one of those seat belt cutting window smashing tool for each of my cars. Maybe I’ll give them as Christmas gifts.
miss any lessons?

Well, it turns out a company doesn’t even have to fail for you to suddenly lose everything you entrusted to it. This week ZDNet blogger Ed Bott tweeted the URL to the story of a former enthusiastic Google advocate and evangelist who, for reasons unknown to him, one day woke up to find his Google account shut down. The post is a long one, but the gist of it was that he had gone “all in” with Google because he considered it a trustworthy company: he consolidated all his mail to one Gmail account, had all his photos, voice mail, Google Reader articles, contacts, docs and calendar on Google services. He lost saved maps, travel history, medical records and a blogger account. You can read the whole sad tale here:

The “cloud” can leave one high and dry.
I’ll be going back over my SOPs for exposure.
I’m not a cloud fan already because one can NOT always have access to the inet. Even if you’ve bought and paid for it. The ISP have no duty to supply service. Forget what they say in the ads. If you have it great; if not, too bad.
This just reinforces the concern over the availability issues.

If you subscribed to Verizon Wireless’s America’s Choice II calling plans, you could receive benefits from a class action settlement.
Para ver este aviso en español, visita http://www.cowitsettlement.com
A proposed settlement has been reached with Verizon Wireless (“Verizon Wireless”) in a class action, Cowit, et al., v. Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless, No. A0505869 (Ct. of Common Pleas,Hamilton County, Ohio), related to a lawsuit about whether Verizon Wireless failed to provide roaming service without any roaming charges under the America’s Choice II Calling Plan. Verizon Wirelessdenies all of the claims.
WHO IS INCLUDED? The Settlement Class includes all current and former customers of Verizon Wireless who, since February 21, 2005, subscribed to its America’s Choice II Calling Plan. If you are a member of the Settlement Class, you have certain rights and options, such as submitting a claim for benefits, requesting exclusion from the settlement, or objecting to the settlement.
SETTLEMENT BENEFITS. In summary, current Verizon Wireless customers whose calling plan provides for a specific allowance of minutes as part of their monthly access fee automatically will receive 25 additional wireless calling minutes, which they can use for a period of one year, or, in the alternative, if these class members submit a Claim Form they can receive a transferable PIN for 40 calling units, which will be valid for 24 months, that can be used to make domestic or international long distance calls. Current Verizon Wireless customers whose calling plan provides for an unlimited number of minutes as part of the monthly access fee will automatically, without filing a Claim Form, receive a transferable PIN for 40 calling units, which will be valid for 24 months, that can be used to make domestic or international calls. Former Verizon Wireless customers must submit a Claim Form to receive a transferable PIN for 40 calling units, which will be valid for 24 months, that can be used to make domestic or international calls. You can submit your claim online at http://www.cowitsettlement.com or by mail. The claim deadline is November 8, 2011.
As part of the settlement, Class Counsel will submit a request for attorneys’ fees, expenses, and incentive awards for the Class Representatives as more fully set forth in the Full Notice described below which will be paid by Verizon Wireless and will not affect the benefits to the class under the Settlement.
OTHER OPTIONS. If you do not want to be legally bound by the settlement, you must exclude yourself by September 27, 2011. If you stay in the Settlement Class, you may object to the settlement, the attorneys’ fees or the incentive payments by September 27, 2011. The Full Notice includes complete information on how to request exclusion or object to the settlement. The Court will hold a hearing on October 28, 2011, to consider whether to approve the settlement and the request by Class Counsel for attorneys’ fees and incentive payments.
THIS IS ONLY A SUMMARY NOTICE. A more complete description of this class action and proposed settlement, including how to exclude yourself from the class, claim benefits, or object to the settlement, is contained in the Full Notice. Argh, a network blip and now it’s screwed up.
My gripe is the message “contact support”.
Any idea how?
# # # # #
GOOGLE+, Google’s version of FACEBOOK, is off to a slow start.
Somehow, not really sure how, I scored an invite.
Initial setup was trivial.
Added about forty folks whom I thought could benefit and enjoy this new “facebook”.
The big attraction to me was the ability to update, like “tweet”, to a specific subset of identities. My highschool mates versus my favorite headhunters versus my relatives.
Rumor hath it that adding someone to a circle triggered an invite.
So I loaded a dummy email (i.e., one of the many I have for various purposes) and about 12 hours later, it received an email update but no invite. So much for that myth.
It’s not very useful without participation. I could effect the same result with a big CC list.
Also, it appears that I can’t control the display name of the identity in my circle.
Also, it appears that there is a weak linkage to GMAIL’s contacts. With no “update”. I went to GMAIL’s contacts and I can’t figure out where the “name” for an identity is coming from. I loaded an email into GOOGLE+ and put in the name in the format I like. Poof, it gave it a different name that is not related to anything I have for it. Weird? And, I can’t fix it.
Finally, putting a post in the Google group for support, generates an email summary of a hundred or so messages, at semi random intervals.
Interesting?

Making financial comparisons easy with Google Advisor
Posted: 19 May 2011 12:13 PM PDT
*** begin quote ***
Financial decisions may be some of the most difficult decisions we face—whether it’s finding the right credit card or understanding the impact of paying an extra point on a mortgage. And these days, it seems like we have more financial options than ever.
To help solve these problems, we began testing a mortgage comparison tool in 2009 and have added other financial products such as credit cards, CDs, checking, and savings accounts. Today, we’re rolling these tools into one place: Google Advisor, a site designed to help you quickly find relevant financial products from many providers and compare them side-by-side. Google Advisor is currently only available in the U.S.
