Apparently now the blog option gives you a hosted WORDPRESS implementation.
Remember when they first came out with a blog option, it was for a free one. I tried it and blew out my website. If I had used my blog’s domain name http://www.reinkefaceslife.com who knows what would have happened.
In any event it’s “interesting”. I’m playing with it. And, will give it my usual “tire kicking”.

I definitely don’t think WordPress.com is “bad.” In fact, for many bloggers, it’s a great option. It just wasn’t right for me, mostly because I didn’t have ultimate control over my blog. Here are some thoughts on limitations of a free blog:
With a free blog, you don’t actually own the domain or the blog. You’re just using someone else’s space. I like having the keys to my blog, and knowing that I can do anything I want; I’m not at someone else’s mercy.
Free blogs are inherently limited when it comes to customization. You’re usually stuck with a number of preset themes. WordPress has tons of plugins, but only certain widgets are allowed on WordPress.com.
You also can’t do some things on free platforms, due to the Terms of Service. One example is PayPerPost. We can debate the paid posting model, but the fact is that WordPress.com won’t allow you to do it. I like flexibility.
Migrating to your own custom WordPress installation shouldn’t be too hard. I did it last year. I copied each and every post from WordPress.com to my new installation. There’s probably a way to automate this, but I’m not sure. The biggest issue of migrating is that you’ll lose some referral and search traffic, if you’re not careful. You can put redirects on each old page, but this is time consuming. Once again, maybe there’s an automatic way for this to work.

Now, I know about the widget restriction. Javascript is basically verboten on the free site. And, I doubt I’d ever attract the readership to make any money out of this. So up to now, the idea of moving off the free site, never interested me. But, like bozos who use a hotmail email address for their jobsearch, maybe I am being “dense”. I started to look at WordPress’ preferred hosting vendors. One has some gripes about their availability and others are focused on webhosting with barely a mention of WordPress.
Have to think if that effort is worth the cost in dollars and attention.
One item of note: I found Legal Andrew as a result of a blog carnival hosted by Jason Alba of JibberJobber http://www.jibberjobber.com. So, one truly has to keep your eyes open and connect the dots to learn all the “tricks of the trade”. Blogging trade that is.
I was exchanging email with G. Lane Cavalier of “Connecting the World One Beverage at a Time” http://glcavalier.wordpress.com/ about my thoughts on this topic. I referred him to the blog and he came back and asked where I had blogged about it. Of course, being lost in the subject, I had forgotten to hang it out here. Duh. That’s for the reminder Lane. Bottom line: I’m not sure that moving off the free WordPress is a good idea or easily done. Still thinking about that/

Now using my amazing power of negative thinking, I would think this would be a good place to place the “LEAD WEIGHTS” in one’s life. I think their methodology is flawed unless one wants to be incredibly negative about someone. All a bozo will see is negativity.

I don’t think our brains are wired this way. IMHO it only works by pair-wise comparison. For example, even if we accept their dimensions of “Generosity, Intelligence, Likeability, Sense of Humor, and Trustworthiness” — I’d have my own as would you –, how can you rate “likeability” on a sliding scale. I can say that I like X more than Y, or I like X, or I dislike Y, but to slide the “likeability” bar. Nah, I’m no psysicy-ologist just an old injineer who can’t spell them bug wurds. My brain doesn’t work that way
And, to put someone on this site, you really have to know a lot about them.
So imho it’s a good page for the lead weights in your life.

G’day Mate, No, not an awesie, but I watched Crock-a-dile dundee a few times. Does that count? Glad you were amused. I think that inet’s “hidden nature” allows people to be butt heads and think there are no consequences. Putting bozos on the virtual iceberg and giving them a healthy shove out to the proverbial sea will send a quick chilling message. Glad to be entertaining. I had an injineering prof say “if you can’t get the answer right, at least be entertaining”.
OK, seriously now, I think the jury is still out on the whole social networking genre. I really don’t have time to master multiple sites in the niche. I chose LinkedIn over Ryze for my efforts because Ryze was overrun with MLMers and “kiddies”. I have yet to say “wow, that was because of LinkedIn that I made that $5”. OTOH I have connected with lots of people, earned a little following on my blog, and did publish a “vanity” of my blog in 2006. I’d say that was all driven from LinkedIn. I’m not sure that I say it was “worthwhile” yet. But, I haven’t written it off yet. It’s still a “work in progress”. The genre is still “silo-ed” imho. That is that tools don’t interoperate yet. If ever. I still have a lot of “hand operated” stuff. If I could logically add Act – Outlook – Plaxo – LinkedIn – Skype – Corex Cardscan – AOLIM – MySql – Gmail – Greader – Gpage all into one black box that synced flawlessly, then I’d say “worthwhile”.
Thanks for a great question that allowed me to summarize my thoughts. I’ll blog it when I get time.
So what do you think? Are they “worthwhile”?

You’ll be happy to know that I have taken my own advice. All passwords, that were previously saved in ROBOFORM on my platform, have been moved off to a fob.
I recommend this as one of the things you should spend money on. (Hey forty bucks ain’t gonna break you.) And, should the notebook get stolen, the thieves can’t steal your identity.
Should they get loveable LUGGABLE, it’s not like I’m not going to notice. While it will take some time to change over a thousand passwords, it’s just a pia.
Should they get the fob, it’s the same problem. BUT, they first have to crack ROBOFORM’s encryption, before I change all the passwords.

I’m gradually bringing LUGGABLE back from “hunka junk” to “functioning”. My plan to reformat was significantly delayed by DELL. In the interim, I’ve been trying to solve the problems. WORD2003 was locking up on startup. I repaired twice. Did everything else I could think of. Sacrificed a chicken. And, finally hit on the idea of nuking all the printers defined to XP. When PUBLISHER2003 locked up in the same way, that’s what clued me in. Nuking all the printers brought it back to life.
