A missing 70-year-old hiker who was miraculously been found alive after getting lost for five days in the blistering heat of the Sierra Nevada mountains has revealed how he managed to survive.

Warren Elliott disappeared last week after setting out on a stroll from his campsite in Rubicon Springs.

The experienced hiker made a wrong turn at around 3pm on Friday and ended up getting lost as the mercury soared to 90F, drinking from the nearby river and snacking on berries to survive.

​Of course, the article doesn’t reveal the “mistake” or the “trick”.

(I don’t consider “making a wrong turn”, that might kill you, as a mere “mistake”.  It’s a “mistake” when you put ketchup on your hot dog instead of mustard.  Nor do I consider “drinking from a river and snacking on berries ” as a “trick”.)

He was lucky to survive.

Where was his daypack and at least his EDC (Every Day Carry)?  When you’re lost, it’s drilled into stop moving and stay put, so you can be found.  Nine crow miles away is obviously not staying put.  At least, when you “found” the river, make camp and build a smoky fire.  That’s a “trick” to get found. 

And, with all of these “rescues”, I always ask “who pays”? We know it’s the Taxpayer.

Argh!

A group of fishermen lost at sea for nearly three days managed to survive by keeping themselves in high spirits aboard their life-raft, before they used a flare gun to attract rescuers.

The seven crew members were forced to abandon their ship, the Elite Navigator, on Wednesday after a small fire on the vessel quickly turned into an inferno.

With little time to spare, the men piled into a life-raft and abandoned the burning boat.

No inventory of what they had, should have had, or an obviously needed transponder.

No one seems to care about “preps” until it’s too late.

The concept of EDC (Every Day Carry) is to have what you’d need in an emergency.  When you go out on the water or into the forest, then your needs change and so to you EDC.

A blind hiker and his guide dog are safe after being rescued by a US Coast Guard helicopter crew when they became stranded for days in the heat on an Oregon hiking trail.

The US Coast Guard Pacific Northwest announced an aircrew had rescued a 55-year-old man and his dog from the Rogue River Trail in southwest Oregon.

The hiker, who officials said is legally blind, began hiking the trail with a friend and his guide dog July 3 and began to show symptoms of heat exhaustion July 6.

Officials said that, due to lack of cellphone service, the friend left the unidentified man and his dog with food and water and headed toward Gold Beach to call 911.

Didn’t they have an Apple phone with satellite capability or a satellite phone?   Guess not.  Who pays for the rescue?

Sigh!  The taxpayer.

Maybe a lucky fool who overestimated his skills.  Going on a hike without telling anyone where and no supplies?
 
</sarcasm> … Hell, I won’t go to the local McDonalds without telling someone where I’m going. .. <sarcasm/>
 
Seriously, I really wonder about people’s intelligence level and sanity.When I was in USAF survival school, we were taught to “plan to be lost”.  And we were in a national forest in Idaho.  And, you can really feel “lost” in a forest and disoriented very quickly.  A proper compass, topological map, and proper “survival” kit is essential for a good outcome.
 
Never mind that he was unarmed in cougar country.  
 
And, btw, who pays for his rescue?  It would seem that the Big Basin Redwoods State Park would see “rescue insurance” to everyone to defray the cost of reducing the unprepared.

We need answers to why so many died in the Buffalo storm

The death toll from the blizzard in Buffalo keeps rising and is now at least 33 — begging the question of how a city known for its fierce winters couldn’t protect its residents.

Part of the issue is that exact fact: Buffalo natives are accustomed to the weather. Far too many took to the roads even after being warned, likely thinking it was just another winter storm.

As Erie County Sheriff John Garcia said Tuesday, “when we heard terms such as bomb cyclone, this is something that we’re used to in Western New York.”

“But,” he added, “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

It’s obvious that officials, from Gov. Hochul down, should have been more forceful with their warnings. While businesses were urged to close, a travel ban wasn’t announced until shortly before 9 a.m. Friday, a mere 41 minutes before it took effect and as the storm was beginning to bear down on the region.

And though more equipment was called up, zero visibility meant it was difficult for responders to reach people trapped in their cars, leaving some to die.

Anyone, who expects the Gooferment to save them from their own mistakes, will soon find out that they are often on their own.

The blizzard is a known hazard in Buffalo.  So when one is predicted, it would seem obvious that one prepares and takes shelter at home or where ever necessary.  

If you have to drive, and that list of reasons should be extremely short  — medical emergency is the only thing I can imagine, then you should have a “winter survival” kit in the car’s back seat.  Sleeping bag, candles, water, and food are essential. 

Seems like some people feel immune to the cold cruel world that we live in.

It’s unclear if the juveniles will face charges for the beatdown.

“juveniles” my tush.  They are “adults” and should be charged as such.

I thought Texas was Red State tough on crime jurisdiction.

This is an example of society on the road to perdition.  There should be public outrage.

And, I notice that no one is mentioning the race of all involved.  Could it be a “hate crime” too?

Also, teachers SHOULD be armed!

The article cites German switch from nuclear and gas to renewable electric with all new construction being required to use electric heat pumps.

Since every bad idea in Europe seems to flow to the USA, it would behoove folks to examine how they are going to stay warm in the​ coming DECADE.  Even in non-SHTF planning, higher “energy” costs may mean that alternatives might be critical  — in terms of budget, availability, or outages. 

At the very least, some insulation and other energy saving investments might cost less now before “everyone wants them” and give a great ROI.

First, he suggested they build a stretcher by using two lengths of wood and stringing their t-shirts across it—a technique David had learned from his eagle scout older brother.

“It was his idea to make the stretcher,” said Christine. “We didn’t think it would work because we didn’t think the dog would get onto the stretcher. Smokey was just happy to, and we just carried him out.”

Someone (presumably David) knew the way back to the parking lot as well, and so they all worked together, sometimes in twos, sometimes in fours, to get Smokey to safety, who despite his injuries occasionally hopped off to give some relief to the exhausted hikers.

David would later take the opportunity to tell KHON2 News when you’re off on a hike, a good way to be prepared is to imagine what could go wrong, and plan for that.
